It makes sense... to try to make sense out of what makes sense. But if something is senseless, trying to make sense out of it is... (drumroll, please) senseless

Such is the mystery of life. Such is the mystery of the cosmos. Such is the mystery of ourselves. To be wondered, not made sense of. 

Jack Haas is a guy who loves wonder, mystery, senselessness. So do I. I've blogged about Haas and his stimulating books here and here. And... here I go again. 

Recently I got Haas' book, The Dream of Being -- aphorisms, ideograms, and aislings. (An aisling is a vision poem; who knew?) Here's some aislings that struck me as well worth sharing. Enjoy. I've added some paragraph breaks in this one to make the writing stream easier to flow with.

the fledgling 

You were trying to complete a puzzle without having first collected all the pieces. You wanted to make sense of what is senseless. You wanted to finish what you forgot you had not started. You sought to reduce yourself towards an irreducibility, to be conscious of vacant ecstasies. You strove to dissipate and to occur, to hope without needing, and to run without fear.

You imagined you were living in two worlds, when actually you were dying in both. You wanted to return to where you never had been. You sought freedom from seeking. You were earnest to be still. You wanted to be. You wanted to not-be. You wanted to detach from detachment, to cling to not-clinging, and to heroically surrender.

You were trying to fall down gracefully. You thought you could be full of emptiness. You wanted to unknow the known and to know the unknown. You sought an intelligent, lucid ignorance. You wanted the reconciliation of the inner with the outer to be a comfortable, sane madness. You were trying to tread water, while still standing on the shore. 

You wanted to die in life, and to live in death. You wanted to attend your own absence. You wanted old answers, not new questions. You wanted nothingness to have context, but then it would be something, would it not? You wanted the spirit to contort into a recognizable form, but then it would not be spirit.

You wanted separateness to be uncategorizable. You wanted directions to the hidden treasure, but then it would not be hidden. You wanted only petty, swallowable, meaningless understandings, so you could continue in the world despite your inability to continue in it.

And a bird, with both feet held fast to a branch, flaps and flaps, curses and screams, and then forever assumes it can't fly.

Great stuff. Haas knows what's been inside my own head. And still is, to an extent I'm unaware of, along with so much else. Here's another sharing...

mirrors

There are naught but mirrors. And a mirror facing a mirror sees the nothing that everything is; sees itself not seeing itself. A reflection reflecting reflection: 'what isn't' facing 'what isn't'. Reflections are reflections.

Just as the individual is not divided, but is only a specific point of reflection to all else. A mirror mirrors that which it is not; it becomes by not being. In order to be it must not be. If it was something it would not be itself. It it was, it would not be.

Life is a stand-off between two men who have guns but not bullets, though neither knows of the other's true poverty. Bluff versus bluff is the battle. No one dies, and everyone's a killer.

A demon is the debelief in itself; you need only accept that it 'is'... and it ceases to be.

A dog unwillingly chases its tail. The tail, however, sees only a great, ferocious beast frantically pursuing it. And even if the tail was informed of the continuum -- that the beast is itself, confused -- still it could not help but be terrified.

We need god because we do not need god.

That is, because of the terror of the internal mystery, we authorize an enigmatic omnipotence to alleviate our own debilitating occurrence; god is the invention of our denials; we deny the incomprehensible within ourselves, forcing the mystery away, onto another, for 'to be' and to be a mystery to ourselves, that is too much for us; we transfer our unknowing, contriving an unknowable omniscience so as to conclude ourselves known; we invent a grandiose not-known to avoid the discomfort of our own ignorance; we point away from ourselves and comfortably gape, until mystery points back at us, and we realize that, all along, we have been captivated and looking at mirrors.

The Dukan Food plan VS The Atkins Weight-reduction plan

For the Dukan diet, here is the start of the maintenance period of the dieter's "true weight" which was attained in phase 2. Where as only at that phase the Atkins diet performs the preparations required by the Pre- maintenance period. The carbohydrate intake is reduced again to achieve the goal weight.Phase 4:In this last phase, "Stabilization" for Dukan and "Lifetime Maintenance" for Atkins, it's about showing everyone else around you that "Yes! I could stay with it! " During this period both of the weight loss programs will make you climb onto exactly the same platform. You will have to live the remainder you will ever have in phase 4 within your food diets, done well!Eating is part of life and really should be neither regimented nor sacrificed. The Dukan diet promises those on a diet to drop weight by consuming as much as they really want with one hundred accepted foods. The Atkins diet 's been around for 40 years and contains been supported with over sixty studies during this time period.

Missing a night's sleep has the same effect on the immune system as experiencing physical stress, a new study from the Netherlands finds.

In the study, men who were kept continuously awake for 29 hours showed an increase in levels of white blood cells called granulocytes. And while levels of these white blood cells usually go through vary throughout a normal day, this rhythm was lost during sleep deprivation, the researchers said.

Sleep deprivation is known to be associated with the development of obesity, and with chronic diseases, such as diabetes and breast cancer. Further research is needed to understand how changes in the immune system may influence the development of these diseases, the researchers said.

Because the study was small, future research is needed to confirm the results.

The researchers compared the white blood cell counts of 15 healthy young men under normal and severely sleep-deprived conditions. During the study, blood samples were collected every three hours for a 48-hour period.

The study is published today (June 30) in the journal Sleep.

There are many religions and many teachers and many spiritual disciplines to inspire, guide and inform our spiritual journey - all are vehicles able to carry a process of developing the awareness that leads to Wisdom.

"Awareness of what?" we might ask. Although we have a longing to understand the meaning of human experience, we may not be able to name this longing. Usually when this need has not formed in our consciousness, we will find ourselves confused and feeling misdirected, trying to fill a void, looking for an un-named something.

At other times we seek out life lessons found in books, religions, teachers, literature, art. Sometimes we choose a specific belief system within a religion to guide us. Sometimes we rely upon a philosophy. Sometimes, in surprising and unexpected ways, our insights lead us into deep personal experiences and we draw upon their meaning for guidance.

But whatever the path chosen for our journey toward Wisdom, we must create a place within ourselves for Wisdom to emerge. To seek the inner truth of human experience we must accept our life and ourselves such as they are. We must be willing take responsibility for what we believe, how we think about and relate to others, how we act upon our feelings and what the consequences of our reality are. Without this attitude of open self-examination, we find ourselves serving the needs of our self-protecting ego instead of feeding our spiritual hunger. Honest self-acceptance and personal inquiry open up the space for inner Wisdom to develop and nourish the process of spiritual formation.

Having made a commitment to self-disclosure and humility and by examining our pride and admitting our imperfect choices, we have invited discernment and are prepared for our journey. The wisdom of spiritual awareness will develop over time as meaning builds upon previous meaning, deepening insight builds upon previous insight. Now we will find ourselves on a life-long path that seeks truth and meaning.

This path may b! e follow ed within a spiritual practice such as prayer or meditation or worship, or the expansion of meaning may be carried within a promise to live in the present moment as we take our guidance from that moment. All intentions may be at work. But in order for spiritual consciousness to evolve, for Wisdom to deepen, we must make every effort to clear away personal attitudes that obstruct its process.

Meditation: Why Bother?

One of the first things I ask my clients to do is to create a habit of regular meditation. If they're already practicing, I ask them to extend the duration of their meditation, or to let go of techniques they may be using and try something that feels more natural.

Very few clients ask me why I make this request. Sometimes I explain anyway, but I suspect that most people instinctively know that meditation is good for them. Just as the body craves water when it's thirsty, so the spirit craves silence and stillness.

Nonetheless, it's powerful to know why you're meditating. And although there are many benefits that have been described in many places - the popular press, medical journals, websites, books - and although those benefits are certainly pleasant and useful side effects that I'm happy my clients will enjoy, that's not why I recommend it.

The way you experience the world affects how you feel about yourself and your life.

Are you an optimist, or a pessimist? The relative fullness of your life's glass has gone beyond being a cute way of asking that question to become an annoying cliche. No one really wants to say they're a half-empty person. Instead, you're more likely to call yourself a realist, no matter which camp you're in.

When it comes down to it, though, no matter how you view your place in the world, as long as you're swept from moment to moment on the currents of your thoughts and feelings, you're stuck.

You're stuck, because who you believe you are is entwined with what you think and how you feel. You're at the mercy of the current, and if it suddenly dives into whitewater, you're going with it whether you want to or not.

Instead, you can learn to stand on the shore and observe your thoughts and feelings, observe how your body reacts to those thoughts and feelings. From that vantage point, you can see the beauty of the whitewater without getting drowned in it. You can enjoy the slower, more peaceful currents without worrying about where they'! re going - or not going. You can watch the crashing waterfall without getting wrapped up in the drama.

Meditation, sitting in silence and stillness, is the opportunity for your consciousness to learn to observe your thoughts and feelings from the shore instead of swimming in the rapids. As you gain confidence in meditation, as you cultivate your observer, you will find it becoming part of your life, allowing you to be increasingly more objective about your experience. You'll stop getting caught up in the drama.

From the shore, from the place of quiet objective observation, you'll see things about yourself and about the situations of your life that will surprise, intrigue, and delight you. From this place of quiet, you'll find intelligence, wisdom, and possibly even awakening.

It starts with meditation. It's a powerfully effective way to find the silence, to develop the observing consciousness. And that's why I practice meditation, and have for 35 years, and why I ask my clients to practice.

Here are a few guidelines for you. If you're already meditating, keep it up! and if these ideas are a little different from your current approach, I invite you to give them a try.

Let Go of TechniqueThere are a lot of techniques being taught by a lot of people. (I cringe at the ads I see in magazines and online to "Learn Instant Deep Meditation!" There are no end runs in meditation or in life.)

Techniques are like training wheels on a bicycle. They can be useful in the beginning, but in the end if you never let go, you're limited in where you can ride. If you're using techniques (for example, following the breath, focusing on a particular area of your body, or chanting a mantra), try letting go of the technique after the first few moments of your meditation. Just let go and see what happens. Meditation is not about doing it "well" or entering some higher, so-called altered state; it's about being with your experience in the moment.

Resistance is FutileInstead of expect! ing a sp ecific experience or result, simply recognize that wherever your experience goes, it's ok. If your mind wanders, that's ok. If you fall asleep, obviously your body needed rest more than your spirit needed stillness. If your nose itches, scratch it.

Be curious; don't resist; just listen. Whatever happens, notice it and leave it alone. Don't get involved, don't judge, don't push away. Allow everything to be exactly as it is, without fighting it or thinking it's "wrong" or "should" be different. This is the awakening of your observer. Allow your consciousness to notice what's happening without becoming involved in it. (And if it does get involved - guess what? It's ok!)

Meditate LongerWhatever your current meditation time is, see what it would be like if you meditated longer. Unless you're already meditating for an hour or more, the potential for expanding your ongoing sense of spaciousness and presence will exponentially increase with longer meditations. I know it's hard to find time to "sit and do nothing," and I wouldn't suggest it if I didn't know how profoundly it can change your life.

So try to find more time, even if it's just another five minutes. Take extra time when you can; nothing says your meditation has to be consistent from day to day.

Meditation is a vacation for your heart, spirit, Self. Enjoy it!

Gangtok is the capital of the second smallest state in India, Sikkim, situated in the north eastern part of India. Gangtok remained unknown to the rest of the world but was opened to the world after the construction of the Enchey Monastery, a Buddhist pilgrimage centre, in 1840. Being on the trade route between Lhasa in Tibet and India, Gangtok became a major stopover during the British Raj. When India got independence, Sikkim chose to remain as an independent monarchy. In 1975, Sikkim was made part of India.

During the Indo-China war, the Nathu La Pass, one of the three open trading posts with China, was closed, temporarily terminating the trade relations with China. In 2006, Nathu La Pass was reopened.The Namgyal Institute of Tibetology was constructed in 1958, in traditional Tibetan architecture, to promote and learn about Mahayana Buddhism and the language and tradition of Tibet. The complex houses a rare collection of Tibetan, Sanskrit and Lepcha manuscripts, Buddhist statues, masks, Thangkas and rare artefacts.

Other than the Enchey Monastery, Rumtek Monastery and Do-drul Chorten also attract a lot of Buddhist pilgrims and tourists to view the huge prayer wheels and white pagodas.The T! hakurbar i Temple is one of the oldest Hindu Temples in Gangtok. Ganesh Tok and Hanuman Tok are two temples that are also known for the views. Tashi view point is the best view point of Kanchenjunga.

Tsomgo Lake, 40 km way from Gangtok is located at an altitude of 3780 m and is supposed to be sacred. After the independence of India, Kalimpong became part of the state of West Bengal. When China annexed Tibet in 1959, many Buddhist monks fled from Tibet and established monasteries in Kalimpong. These monks also brought many rare Buddhist scriptures with them. In 1976, the Dalai Lama who visited the Zong Dong Palri Fo Brang monastery, consecrated the scriptures in it. Kalimpong has thus got great religious importance among the Buddhists. Unlike Darjeeling, which is a crowded tourist destination, Kalimpong is a peaceful one and is loved by many tourists because of this.Kalimpong is the major ginger growing area in India. Kalimpong also exports traditional handicrafts, wood carvings, embroidered items, copper wares, bags, purses, scrolls, Tibetan jewellery and artifacts.

Tourism is the main source of income for the residents of Kalimpong. The main tourist spots of Kalimpong are Deolo hill, which is the highest point in Kalimpong from where the Kanchenjunga massif is visible. The Gowripur House, which was the home of the great Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore, the Zong Dong Palri Fo Brang monastery, the Mangal Dham temple, The Cactus Nursery and the golf course are the other main tourist spots of Kalimpong.

9 Snack Foods: Healthy or Not?

Healthy eating is often a challenge, particularly when we're surrounded by so many foods that seem to disguise themselves as good for us. We know some fats are necessary, whole grains are good, and getting adequate amounts of fruits and veggies is paramount, but sometimes the grocery store can still feel like a nutritional maze. <br><br> The problem with assessing the health-value of many foods is that consumers are "led by the advertisement on the front of the package, and that becomes a selling point," said Constance Brown, a registered dietitian and spokesperson for the National Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. <br><br> The best thing to do is to pick up a package and turn it around. For example, healthy snacks should be no more than 200 calories, and should have plenty of fiber, little sugar and almost no fat, Brown said. Reading the list of ingredients, along with the nutrition label, is a good way to understand what you're really eating, she said. <br><br> "Snacks absolutely can be included in a healthy meal plan, it just requires a little bit of thought and planning," Brown said. <br><br> Here are some commonly advertised "healthy" snack choices, and where they fall on the health-o-meter.

American cheese

With its high protein and calcium content, cheese is often assumed to be a healthy part of diet, in moderation. But according to Brown, American cheese is "processed — it's not cheese." <br><br> Not only can it have a lot of fat, American cheese also contains sugar and carbohydrates — which most cheeses do not have. Low-fat cheddar cheese not only has less <a href="http://www.myhealthnewsdaily.com/2715-saturated-fats-diet-gut-diseases.html">saturated fat </a> than American cheese, it has twice the protein of the processed product. <br><br> For a healthier snack, opt for low-fat cheddar or other unprocessed cheese, and remember that a healthy diet should be based around whole foods, not processed foods.

Yogurt parfaits

Exactly how healthy a yogurt parfait is really depends on what's in it. A parfait made of fat-free yogurt and fresh fruit is a great snack that can easily be prepared at home. <br><br> But prepackaged parfaits often have added <a href="http://www.myhealthnewsdaily.com/2323-sugar-bad.html">sugar </a>, fat and calories in the form of fruit compotes or added granola, not to mention that the yogurt i often the full-fat type. There are sweets that are marketed as healthier because they include important vitamins and minerals, for example, the aptly named "Who Nu Cookies." But such claims of healthiness are nothing more an advertising gimmick, Brown said. <br><br> "People don't eat cookies for these nutritional benefits," she said. Indulging in a cookie "should be reserved for that occasional sweet treat, not as a means for getting essential vitamins and minerals." <br><br> In fact, it's often better to not even indulge in these kinds of a cookie and snacks, because they send such a mixed message about their health value that people use it justify a bad snacking habit. <br><br> Instead, Brown said, by indulging in a couple of your favorite treats every once in a while, you can leave your sweet tooth feeling satiated and under control.

Whole grain corn chips

The most important thing to do with a bag of corn chips advertised as "whole grain" is to make sure the first ingredient listed in the ingredient list on the back is also whole grain, Brown said. <br><br> While you're back there, check to make sure the chips also have a bit of <a href="http://www.myhealthnewsdaily.com/950-fiber-decrease-risk-of-death-110214.html">fiber </a>, and make sure the sodium level, which can range from 5 milligrams (mg) per serving to 150 mg per serving, is at the lower end of that range. <br><br> If the chips meet all these criteria, they could actually be a somewhat healthy snack — or at least, a healthy alternative to a standard potato chip, Brown said.

Fruit leather

"There is no redeeming quality to fruit leather," Brown said. Even if it the product is labeled as organic and <a href="http://www.myhealthnewsdaily.com/2038-vitamin-colds.html">full of vitamin C</a>, the added sugar and lack of fiber makes it a tough sell to a nutritionist. <br><br> Instead of processed fruit leather, a piece of fresh fruit, with natural vitamins and plenty of fiber, will yield "much more satisfaction," Brown said. For people attracted to the convenience factor of the leather, try prunes or small boxes of raisins, Brown suggested. They're both sweet options that are much more healthful than processed products, and still carry the fun factor associated with one-serving items.

Beef jerky

High protein content is generally a good thing in a snack choice, but there are many better options besides beef jerky, which is highly processed and loaded with <a href="http://www.myhealthnewsdaily.com/2209-americans-eat-salt-cdc-finds.html">sodium</a> and sugar, Brown said. <br><br> Instead of going for the jerky, try a high-protein snack such as tuna, which now comes in portable pouches, or a handful of mixed nuts or almonds. Even string cheese is a better option than beef jerky, and tends to be just as convenient, Brown said, but watch out for the fat content of such cheeses.

Cheese-flavored crackers

While these tasty snacks are perhaps lower in fat than potato chips, they still contain unhealthy amounts of sodium and fat. Additionally, they tend not to be whole grain, instead using enriched flour, which doesn't carry the same benefits, Brown said. <br><br> It's important to not limit your snacks to only foods labeled as snack foods, Brown said. In fact, it's better to think about snacks as the "healthy foods that you decide to eat between meals." <br><br> <a href="http://www.myhealthnewsdaily.com/2567-grains-carbohydrates-sugar-diet-fiber.html">Whole grain</a> crackers are a much better choice than cheese-flavored crackers, she said. Even topping a whole grain cracker with a slice of low-fat cheese is a better option than indulging in this snack food.

Vitamin-C enriched fruit snacks

These little morsels can seem like a good way to get kids to consume their <a href="http://www.myhealthnewsdaily.com/2624-eat-vitaminc-diet-nutrition.html">daily dose of vitamin C</a>, and they often tout fruit juice as an ingredient, but this is just a selling point, according to Brown. <br><br> The second ingredient in the ingredient list is almost invariably sugar or corn syrup, making them nothing more than a sweet with a little bit of vitamin C. <br><br> "If you want to get vitamin C, get it from an orange," Brown said.

Popsicles made from "real fruit" or "real fruit juice"

Even popsicles that are made with actual fruit juice probably contain added sugars, Brown said. Zen Driving Meditation Technique

Unfortunately for many of us, work, family, education and more work seems to be consuming our lives. The worst part of this hectic life-style is that the one aspect which should not suffer, does. Our spiritual growth. In this article I will present you with a terrific meditation technique that you can do while driving or while in transit. This should, hopefully, help you in getting your spiritual work back on track and enjoying the marvelous benefits that such work bestows.

In America we drive a lot, and even those who don't drive a lot, often take trains and buses as part of their daily life. This "idle" time presents us with a great opportunity to get in some meditation work and there are many meditations that can conveniently be done during this time.

An obvious warning of course is that please DO NOT practice this meditation if it distracts you in any way from your driving.

Zen meditation techniques all have their roots in mindfulness or being in the moment. This meditation technique is no different and is also designed to help you come into the "here and now" as much as possible. Below is a step by step guide of how to practice this meditation. It is given assuming you are driving, but can easily be extrapolated to other modes of transportation.

Meditation Tip: Driving Zen Meditation Technique

- Start the meditation by taking 5 long deep slow breaths. This will relax you.

- Now, bring your attention to your breathing and just observe its flow without manipulating it in any way. Meditate on it's physical characteristic as closely as you can. Feeling it's temperature, texture, depth etc. Continue this meditation for 1-5 minutes. This will settle your mind down.

- Now begins the heart of this meditation. Begin to watch the scenery go by as you drive with an unfocused, h! olistic gaze. In other words, let your vision relax, incorporate the periphery and without any point of focus just observe the world as you journey through it. Just observe the trees, sky, clouds, houses, cars as they pass by. Just be empty within and allow the world to pass through you. That's it.

- To add another component to this meditation technique, whenever you come to a stop return your attention to your breath and then when moving, meditate once more on the scenery.

- If at any time driving requires your focused attention please stop the meditation and pay attention to your driving.

Commentary on Driving Zen Meditation Technique

This meditation technique has the ability to reveal to you the True Nature of Reality. Etched in my mind are occasions where the absolute perfection of life and the moment, were fully realized while practicing this technique. This meditation was one that just came to me naturally and I am happy to share it with all of you.

1 in 4 Couples Share HPV Strains

The human papillomavirus (HPV) spreads surprisingly quickly between two people in a new relationship, a new study finds.

In fact, couples in the study were actually more likely to be infected with the same strain or strains of HPV if they had been together less than one year, as opposed to a longer period, the researchers said.

"HPV is very infectious," said study researcher Alan Nyitray, of the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute at the University of South Florida. "When a couple comes together...they're going to share their HPV microbiota very, very quickly."

But people clear the virus at different rates, and so couples who have been together longer are less likely to "match" in terms of their HPV status, Nyitray said.

The study also found that in general, it's common for couples to be infected with the same strain of HPV, or to both be free of infection. About one fourth of heterosexual couples in committed relationships in the study shared at least one strain of HPV, the researchers found. And in more than a third of couples, both people were HPV free.

Nyitray emphasized that for most people, HPV infections are transient, and are not something to worry about.

But because the virus is known to cause cervical cancer, women should undergo regular screening for this cancer, Nyitray said. In addition, those eligible for HPV vaccination should receive it, Nyitray said.

Sharing HPV

Nyitray and colleagues tested 88 couples ages 18 to 70 for HPV infection. Seventy-five percent had been in a monogamous relationship for at least the last six months. None of the participants had a disease associated with HPV.

Overall, about 55 percent of men and 45 percent of women were infected with any strain of HPV.

In 31 couples (35 percent), neither partner had an HPV infection, while 21 couples (24 percent) shared at least one strain of HPV.

In 11 couples (12 percent) both people were infected with HPV, but did not share strains, and 25 couples had only one partner with an HPV infection (28 percent.)

Couples were more likely to share HPV strains if both people were of similar age, a finding that may be related to the strength of the immune response to HPV in older versus younger people. Couples with one young person, who may be exposed to the virus for the first time and take longer to clear it, and one older person, who may clear the infection more quickly, may be less likely to have "matching" strains, the researchers said.

Pairs were more likely to be HPV free if, together, the sum of their total lifetime sexual partners was low, Nyitray said.

Better immunity in women?

Among the couples in which one partner had HPV and the other did not, in 17 cases it was the woman who was HPV free, while in 8 couples it was the man. This finding suggests women have a stronger immune response to HPV, the researchers said.

Couples who were monogamous were no more likely to be infected with the same HPV strains than couples who were not monogamous.

Because the study was small, and monogamy was defined as sex with one partner for at least 6 months, more research is needed to confirm the results, and to see what happens in couples that are monogamous for longer periods, the researchers said.

Nyitray and colleagues are now analyzing information from a second study that followed the participants for two years. Nyitray said he hopes future research will reveal other ways to prevent spread of HPV between sex partners besides vaccination, which currently, most people do not receive.

The study will be published July 15 in the Journal of Infectious Diseases.
