Spiritual Books, New Age Parapsychology, Metaphysical And Mind Body Spirit Books

Posted: 13 Jun 2012 12:00 PM PDT

Article by David Gau-ghan

Many people believe that new age books are different from spiritual books, even though there are so many books available that are described as new age spiritual books. If we look at the terms new age and spiritual, we find similarities, where spiritual refers to soul or spirit and new age has been described as 'of or relating to spiritual and consciousness raising movements'. New age books encompass health, medicine, philosophy, religion and the occult. And yet, the term new age was only coined in recent decades, mainly from the 1970's. So that begs the question - is there such a thing as a New Age?

Many so-called new age books (and spiritual books) that have been written over these past few decades are emphatic that we are indeed in a new age spiritual era that is NEW in every aspect to what has come before. However, researching older spiritual books and philosophy books shows that humankind has passed through eras of high enlightenment before - inspirational times of metaphysical and spiritual awareness that equals or surpasses our current times. So is this perhaps not a new age as such, but simply a remembering of metaphysical, esoteric, inspirational parapsychology and spiritual powers that all of us possess but have temporarily forgotten. If this be the case, then perhaps a more apt term would be Mind Body Spirit.

Which brings us to another so-called new age term... parapsychology. New age parapsychology is the study of paranormal phenomena and the term parapsychology comes from the Greek para 'beside, beyond' and psychology, derived from the Greek psyche 'soul, mind'. So, here we are back to the spiritual again or, as mentioned above, Mind Body Spirit. And yet, some people still insist that spiritual books, new age books and new age parapsychology are totally separate themes. Perhaps that's why more and more people are coining the phrase Mind Body Spirit in an attempt to mold these various terms into a more unified category.

If we look more closely at the core messages in t! he vario us spiritual books, new age books, metaphysical, esoteric, parapsychology, philosophy and even self improvement books, we often find similarities that are sometimes veiled in different terms that could all be better described as Mind Body Spirit. Yes, even philosophy books, which are essentially the belief or system of beliefs accepted as an authoritative account by a group or philosophy school, have similarities to each other and also to the more recent spiritual new age parapsychology and metaphysical esoteric books. The various philosophy books available today, which are scriptures handed down over many centuries that are the core beliefs of the world's many religions, also have strong similarities in the original message, although the interpretation of these books over the ages has led to contrasting viewpoints.

Considering the strife that such opposing views of philosophy books over the ages has caused, perhaps this new age of parapsychology, with its metaphysical, esoteric and spiritual messages and books will help break down these old belief systems that have divided humanity for so long, particularly when unified under the more acceptable catch-phrase of Mind Body Spirit. The proliferation of self improvement books alone has brought a spiritual awareness to thousands, if not millions, who seek to grow through better knowing themselves. Old philosophy books are being rewritten in more spiritual new age terminology and marketed under various terms, not only new age and spiritual, but also metaphysical books, esoteric books, new age parapsychology, inspirational books, self improvement and even philosophy books. An increasing number of these books are being grouped, on websites and also in physical bookstores, under the Mind Body Spirit label.

The overriding influence of these books is inspirational, encouraging readers to delve deeper into themselves to discover their true spiritual nature and it is encouraging to see so many spiritual new age parapsychology (Mind Body Spirit) books com! ing out in increasing numbers each year.

Two such books are listed on www.1-inspirational-quote-book.com/ although many readers place them into various categories. They are a mixture of metaphysical, spiritual, esoteric and self improvement books, even though they are based in a sci-fi theme. Above all, they are inspirational, told from the viewpoint of an extra-terrestrial race of Beings who are concerned about the direction we are taking. Regardless of the various viewpoints, they will easily fall into the more generalized Mind Body Spirit category and, overall, the feedback from readers has been fantastic, many of them describing the books as 'inspirational and thought provoking'. As one reader wrote ''The story slowly engulfed me, drew me in until I was on my own journey. It opened my mind, enticing me to read more. I ask, is this just a novel or a key to our future...?'

My Husband Refuses To Change His Mind About Staying Married To Me. What Now?

Posted: 13 Jun 2012 11:00 AM PDT

Article by Leslie Cane

Knowing the couple I'm about to describe as I already do, I can pretty much picture the scene in my mind. And since I myself went through the same scene in what seems like another life time ago, I've felt what I know that the wife is feeling right now. I can literally not only see what probably went down in my mind's eye but I can almost experience the feelings that go along with it. Here's how it plays out in my head and also in my own memories.

Seemingly out of the blue, the husband announces that he doesn't want "this" anymore.

"This?" The wife asks. "What do you mean you don't want 'this' anymore?"

"The marriage." He finally replied. "I don't want the marriage anymore. I don't think I'm the type of guy who is meant to be married. Being responsible for someone else just isn't in my make up. I'm not happy. I don't want to hurt you by saying that, but I haven't been happy in far too long."

The wife feels her pulse quicken. Her mouth goes dry. She can't believe she's hearing this. Just last week, they'd vacationed on the site of their honeymoon. Just two days ago, he proclaimed his love for her. "You're just under a lot of stress," she rationalizes. We'll go to counseling. We'll sort this out. We love each other and we can get through anything as long as we work together."

The husband sighs and shakes his head with a silent 'no.' "I don't think so," he insists. "I'm not going to change my mind. I feel like I'm not really living my life. I can't put myself on hold any longer. I'm very sorry but I just don't want this for even one more day. I'll do everything in my power to make sure this is amicable, but I'm done."

Admittedly, maybe I took some creative license here. But scenes like this one play out each and every day. And yes, I wrote it pretty heavy on the dramatics. But the reason that I expressed it in the way that I did is because I know that it literally feels every bit as dramatic as it reads to the wife who is standing there hearing those words. And I kn! ow that the wife who has found this article wants some answers and is looking for any hope that she can find that she can change his mind and save the marriage. While I can't tell you if your husband is ever going to change his mind or exactly how you are going to make this happen, I can offer some suggestions to you as to what I have found works the best for all involved. I will do that below.

Much Of The Time, Trying To Change The Mind Of A Husband Who Insists That He's Not Going To Change It Is An Exercise In Futility: Those of us who have had our husbands tell us that he's not going to change his mind about wanting us or the marriage often hear the "change my mind" part as almost a challenge. Because we know that this is precisely what we most do in order to save our marriage.

But here's the thing. He's pretty much told you that you're going to be wasting your time if you try to make him see that he is wrong. So often, when you attempt to do just that, he's going to be especially invested in making sure that you do not succeed. He wants to be right every bit as much as you do. And sometimes, even if he's beginning to have conflicting thoughts, he'd rather hide or deny this than admit that you were right and he was wrong. And what will he do in response? He will cling even more tightly to his assertions, even if they are wavering. And unfortunately, this just brings you closer to the end of your marriage.

So you are better off (at least in my opinion,) making it appear that changing his mind is the last thing on yours. If he thinks that you accept his position, than he has no reason to cling to it like a life raft. He may even lessen his drip just a little bit, which can be a good thing for you.

Consider Giving Him A Bit Of What He Thinks He Needs In Order To Be Happy So That He Can Come To His Own Conclusions: You and I both know that it's likely not your marriage that is making your husband unhappy. He may not realize the same right now, but if you give him enough space! to expl ore this, there is a chance that he will soon find out what you already know.

This husband (like many) felt that his marriage and his responsibilities were keeping him from truly experiencing the life and the freedom that he felt he ought to enjoy. Well, then, by all means, consider lowering the marital gate. Perhaps you tell him that you don't want him to feel so trapped as it was never your intention to make him unhappy. Perhaps you offer to stay with friends or family so that he can experience what life is like when he doesn't have a wife and marital life to come home to.

I know that this might not sound all that appealing to you right now. But, if he is never allowed to discover that this carefree lifestyle is perhaps lonely and isolating rather than freeing, then, even if he does end up staying with you and the marriage, he's always going to wonder what might have been. And he's always going to look at his "freedom" as something that you tried to keep him from. Therefore all of those frustrating feelings of being "stuck" are still probably going to be associated with you and your marriage.

Quite honestly, a good deal of husbands in this situation eventually end up figuring out that the trade off for that freedom they want is a bitter loneliness and sense of loss for pushing away the one person who truly loves and knows them. I can't guarantee you that this will always happen. But, if you look at it rationally, you already have a husband who is determined to shed what he thinks is holding him back. How is that going to change if he's not allowed a glimpse of exactly what he is risking for a chance at perceived happiness?

At the very least, I think (and know from experience) that it makes sense to at least play along for a little while and see where that leads you. Because I can tell you that very few husbands who insist that they aren't going to change their minds about not wanting the marriage actually end up changing it without a little intervention first.

I know all o! f this b ecause it was my reality. And like you are probably tempted to do, I made every effort to change my husband's mind about our marriage. And he made every effort to stop me. It wasn't until I pretended to play along (and loosened my grip) that I began to make some progress. I was eventually able to build on this progress (a little at a time) and save our marriage. If it helps, you can read more about how I was able to do this on my blog at http://isavedmymarriage.com

A 21-Day Challenge Can Lead to Better Health

nutrition tips, deborah enos, certified nutritionist,

I spent last Sunday afternoon the same way I spend most Sundays: Thumbing through the latest nutrition journals. (Try not to be too jealous.) I actually enjoy the process because I usually find a study or two that surprises me. This past Sunday, I didn't encounter any surprises, but I did find one study that inspired me.

The 2012 Northwestern University study found that people were able to make lasting changes to their diet and lifestyle after a 21-day commitment to follow a few rules. Participants were given specific instructions on how to eat, and how much exercise to get for each day of the three-week period. They were tasked with changing just two bad habits: lounging on the couch and eating junk food.

They were paid for their participation, but only if they followed the rules. After the three-week period ended, participants continued to report on their diet and exercise regimen, but they had no rules to follow.

Guess what happened? Well, their choices weren't quite as healthy as they were during the rule-following period, but they were much healthier than before the program started.

This got me to thinking: If they can do it, why can't the rest of us?

Here are some tips for creating a 21-day challenge of your own:

  • Set rules – and stick to them. Cut your lounging time to no more than three hours each week. Commit to eating a certain amount of fruits and vegetables each day. It's only three weeks. You can do this.
  • If you mess up, start over. If you don't follow the rules for one day, the next day becomes day one again. How's that for incentive?
  • Tell someone about your challenge. You're more likely to stick to your guns if someone else is holding you accountable. Better yet, invite them to join you.
  • Keep a daily log and mark each successful day on the calendar as it passes. You'll feel a sense of accomplishment that will keep you motivated to continue.

Back Pain Free with Driving Yoga Part 4

Back Pain Free with Driving Yoga Part 4

When getting out of bed, don't even dare trying quick movements. Instead, you should slowly edge your way to the side of the bed and then push yourself up with your arms. That way you don't use your back muscles as much.

Yoga exercises will help you improve your lung capacity, deepen your connection with gravity, and lengthen your spine. You will learn to harness gravity as a positive contributor to functional movement.

You will open the breathing apparatus and give the nervous system and adrenal glands that contribute to stress and the fight or flight response a break and access the parasympathetic nervous system, so that important tasks such as digestion and improved immune function can take place.

By lengthening the spine you will improve your posture and alignment throughout the body for greater ease and less muscular tension.

"Regular exposure to whole-body vibration over many months or years can lead to damage and back pain. The longer you are exposed and the higher the level of whole-body vibration, the greater the chances of you suffering a back injury," HSE writes. "Once you begin to suffer back pain, continued exposure to vibration is likely to make the pain worse."

Once a herniation, always a herniation. Intervertebral discs function to cushion the spine and absorb shock. A herniated disc is essentially a disc with a hole in it. In a herniation, the annulus fibrosis (the tough outer membrane of the disc) is breached, and the softer, inner membrane (the nucleus pulposis) extrudes. P! ain occu rs when the extrusion comes into contact with a nerve.

Obviously taught and prepared by somebody that has never experienced lower back pain. Yes, yoga in general is good for spinal health.

Research in just the last ten years, based on new imaging techniques has shown, revealing a new model of spinal health that is not straight or rigid, but flexible, plastic and curved. Additionally, modern sedentary lifestyles, long hours driving or in front of the computer, severely compromise posture, the source of pain and discomfort.

Lack of Vitamin D May Explain Black Americans' Cancer Deaths

Posted: 13 Jun 2012 10:00 AM PDT

African-Americans are 25 percent more likely to die from cancer than white Americans are, and the reasons are numerous, including lower socio-economic status, poorer access to health care, and the cancer diagnosis coming at later, more deadly stages.

Still, health experts say these factors cannot fully explain the extent of disparities in survival for the most common cancers, such as breast, lung, colon and prostate cancers.

A paper published in the current issue of the journal Dermato-Endocrinology points the finger at a seemingly obvious but overlooked culprit: the sun.

The researchers' theory is that, in northern latitudes, the dark skin of African-Americans cannot absorb enough sunlight to generate adequate amounts of vitamin D, which is often called the "sunshine vitamin." The body uses ultraviolet rays from the sun to manufacture vitamin D in the inner layers of the skin.

Vitamin D is needed for strong bones; doctors nearly 100 years ago associated a lack of adequate sun exposure with rickets among child laborers, exemplified by bowed legs. Recent studies also have shown that low levels of vitamin D in the blood seem to contribute to a weak immune system and a host of diseases, such as cancer and multiple sclerosis. [Infographic: The Power of Vitamin D]

This lack of vitamin D could completely fill in the health disparity gap for cancer survival between white and black Americans, the researchers said.

Previous work by geneticist Rick Kittles at the University of Chicago suggests that upwards of 75 percent of African-Americans are deficient in vitamin D. Kittles says that African-Americans living north of the 37th parallel — just about anyplace north of central California, Texas, Tennessee or North Carolina — will have difficulty through most of the year absorbing enough sunlight to make vitamin D, because of the low angle of the rays reaching the Earth's surface.

Given this largely established fact, researchers Alan Peiris of East Tennessee State University and William Grant of the Sunlight, Nutrition and Health Research Center in San Francisco set out to look for a correlation between vitamin D and cancer death disparities. (In past research, Grant and a colleague suggested low levels of ultraviolet-B rays in Austria, paired with Mozart's nocturnal habits, may have led to vitamin D deficiency in the composer, who died at the age of 35.)

What they found in the new study is preliminary but warrants further investigation, they said. Relying solely on a scientific literature review, the researchers found that low vitamin D is independently associated with each of the cancer types for which an unexplained health disparity exists between African-Americans and white Americans.

Specifically, they found lingering disparities for 13 types of cancer after accounting for socioeconomic status, stage at diagnosis, and treatment: bladder, breast, colon, endometrial, lung, ovarian, pancreatic, prostate, rectal, testicular, and vaginal cancer; Hodgkin's lymphoma; and melanoma. For each one, there is a vitamin-D connection.

Few scientific studies have directly explored the link between cancer deaths and low vitamin D levels in African-Americans, though. One study published in the journal Cancer in 2011 indeed found that vitamin D deficiency contributes to excess African-American mortality from colon cancer. A Harvard study published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention in 2006 found that African-Americans who are at risk for low vitamin D also had a higher risk for cancer death, particularly for digestive-system cancers.

The paucity of studies makes this a ripe topic for exploration, said Grant. If low vitamin D is the cause of this disparity in cancer deaths, thousands of lives could be saved annually by encouraging African-Americans to take a daily vitamin D supplement in the range of 1,000 to 4,000 IUs, he said. [9 Good Sources of Vitamin D]

Peiris added that monitoring vitamin D levels should be routine. The issue becomes critical given that passive exposure from the sun simply is not enough for millions of African-Americans living in northern cities such as Washington, New York and Detroit. Air pollution filters sunlight, too; and many African-American children stay indoor for long hours, sometime over concerns of neighborhood safety.

Obtaining enough vitamin D through food, regardless of one's skin tone, can be difficult. Sources include fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel and wild catfish. At least the sources, aside from cod liver oil, tend to be tasty.

Making Use of Meditation Retreats

Posted: 13 Jun 2012 09:00 AM PDT

Article by Lily Candice

It is often heard in common parlance: Life is demanding. Even so, is it life that is demanding? Are we not the ones who are placing demands on life? Demanding from our spouses, our children and our friends? We make demands on everyone who comes across our path because we have been taught to believe that things have to be done in a certain way. We expect everybody in our sphere of influence to conform, and when they do not, we get restless, furious and agitated. The highest state of living for a human being is one of acceptance. Do your bit and live with the results. Getting from a demanding state to one of acceptance is possible by obtaining some basic learning from meditation retreats. Meditation retreats are places where the art of meditation is taught by established meditation teachers. Meditation retreats have roots in the ancient Buddhist religious practice, but have evolved into a generally accepted practice. So no matter your cultural or social orientation, you can benefit from the knowledge available at meditation retreats. There are several schools of meditation that offer meditation retreats to willing and sincere seekers of genuine freedom. One of the such is known as Z Meditation. The Z Meditation center is based in Dharamsala, within the Himalayas of India. Z Meditation has been in existence for almost twenty years, and has a unique approach to the art of meditation. This system, known as Deep Deconditioning Inquiry, is a logical method by which you can dig up and root out the false beliefs and conditionings that affect the way in which we act and interact. These belief systems that may be geographical or cultural in nature are what determine the anxiety level of many of us as they are mostly unreasonable and without real meaning. The fulfillment of these desires that the beliefs generate are temporary. This leads to a never ending cycle of wanting and getting, or not getting.By looking inward and going to the root of your Self, you will be able to see that you don't really need anythi! ng or an yone to be complete. This does not negate the need to make plans, build a life and relationships. The difference here is that you will now not be affected in any way by the outcome of your efforts. Interestingly, it is when we detach from the outcome that we are able to focus on the task at hand, resulting in positive outcomes. The meditation retreats held several times a year by Z Meditation will enable you to develop this life changing skill. It must be impressed that meditation retreats are only for the serious. The process of Deep Deconditioning Inquiry requires discipline and tenacity to be effective. Meditation retreats are, however, open to all whom express a sincere desire for freedom. Many enlightened people are making use of meditation retreats as an alternative to vacation at other less profitable holiday destinations. At a fraction of the cost of most holiday retreats, meditation retreats may just be a viable option.

Inquiry and naming: Practices to dispel the trance

Posted: 13 Jun 2012 08:39 AM PDT

Sometimes, when our carefully constructed lives seem to be falling apart – when we get a divorce, lose a business, or are laid off, for example – we can torture and berate ourselves with stories about how we're failures, what we could have done better, how no one cares about us. Yet, this response of course only digs us deeper into what I call "the trance of unworthiness."

Distracted by our judgments, we are unable to recognize the raw pain of our emotions. In order to begin the process of waking up, we need to deepen our attention and touch our real experience.

One tool of mindfulness that can cut through our numbing trance is inquiry. As we ask ourselves questions about our experience, our attention gets engaged. We might begin by scanning our body, noticing what we are feeling, especially in the throat, chest, abdomen and stomach, and then asking "What wants my attention right now?" or "What is asking for acceptance?" Then we attend with genuine interest and care, listening to our heart, body and mind.

Check out Emotional Healing and other titles by Tara Brach.

Inquiry is not a kind of analytic digging—we are not trying to figure out "Why do I feel this sadness?" This would only stir up more thoughts. In contrast to the approach of Western psychology, in which we might delve into further stories in order to understand what caused a current situation, the intention of inquiry is to awaken to our experience exactly as it is in this present moment. While inquiry may expose judgments and thoughts about what we feel is wrong, it focuses on our immediate feelings and sensations.

It's important to approach inquiry with a genuine attitude of unconditional friendliness. If I were to ask myself what wants attention with even the slightest aversion, I would only deepen my self-judgment. It may take some practice to learn how to question ourselves with the same kindness and care we would show to a troubled friend.

Naming or noting is another tool of traditional mindfulness practice that we can apply when we're lost. Mental noting, like inquiry, helps us recognize with care and gentleness the passing flow of thoughts, feelings and sensations. If I am feeling anxious and disconnected before giving a talk, for example, I often pause, ask myself what is happening or what wants my attention. With a soft mental whisper I'll name what I'm aware of: "afraid, afraid, tight, tight." If I notice myself anxiously assuming that my talk will be boring and fall flat, I simply continue naming: "story about blowing it, fear of rejection," then, "judging, judging." If instead of noting I try to ignore this undercurrent of fear, I carry it into my talk and end up speaking in an unnatural and insincere way. The simple action of having named the anxiety building before my talk opens my awareness. Anxiety may still be present, but the care and wakefulness I cultivate through noting allows me to feel more at home with myself.

Like inquiry, noting is an opportunity to communicate unconditional friendliness to our inner life. If fear arises and we pounce on it with a name, "Fear! Gotcha!" we're only creating more tension. Naming an experience is not an attempt to nail a unpleasant experience or make it go away. Rather, it is a soft and gentle way of saying, "I see you, fear, anger, etc." This attitude of Radical Acceptance makes it safe for the frightened and vulnerable parts of our being to let themselves be known.

The practices of inquiry and noting are actually ways to wake us up to the fact that we are suffering. Caught up in our stories, we can effectively deny the truth of our experience. I sometimes spend days being impatient and judgmental towards myself before I stop and pay attention to the feelings and beliefs that have been disconnecting me from my heart. When I do pause and look at what's happening, I realize that I've been caught up in the suffering of anxiety and self-doubt.

I have worked with many clients and students who reach a critical gateway when they finally register just how much pain they are in. This juncture is very different from feeling self-pity or complaining about our lives. It is different from focusing on how many problems we have. Rather, seeing and feeling the degree of suffering we are living with reconnects us to our heart.

Recognizing that we are suffering is freeing—self-judgment falls away and we can regard ourselves with kindness. When we offer to ourselves the same quality of unconditional friendliness that we would offer to a friend, we stop denying our suffering. And, most importantly, as we figuratively sit beside ourselves and inquire, listen and name our experience, we can begin to open our heart in tenderness for the suffering before us.

Meditation practice may decrease risk for cardiovascular disease in teens

Posted: 13 Jun 2012 08:00 AM PDT

Regular meditation could decrease the risk of developing cardiovascular disease in teens who are most at risk, according to Georgia Health Sciences University researchers.

In a study of 62 black teens with high blood pressure, those who meditated twice a day for 15 minutes had lower left ventricular mass, an indicator of future cardiovascular disease, than a control group, said Dr. Vernon Barnes, a physiologist in the Medical College of Georgia and the Georgia Health Sciences University Institute of Public and Preventive Health.

Barnes, Dr. Gaston Kapuku, a cardiovascular researcher in the institute, and Dr. Frank Treiber, a psychologist and former GHSU Vice President for Research, co-authored the study published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

Half of the group was trained in transcendental meditation and asked to meditate for 15 minutes with a class and 15 minutes at home for a four-month period. The other half was exposed to health education on how to lower blood pressure and risk for cardiovascular disease, but no meditation. Left ventricular mass was measured with two-dimensional echocardiograms before and after the study and the group that meditated showed a significant decrease.

"Increased mass of the heart muscle's left ventricle is caused by the extra workload on the heart with higher blood pressure," Barnes explained. "Some of these teens already had higher measures of left ventricular mass because of their elevated blood pressure, which they are likely to maintain into adulthood."

During meditation, which Barnes likens to a period of deep rest, the activity of the sympathetic nervous system decreases and the body releases fewer-than-normal stress hormones. "As a result, the vasculature relaxes, blood pressure drops and the heart works less," he said.

School records also showed behavioral improvements.

"Transcendental meditation results in a rest for the body that is often deeper than sleep," Barnes said. "Statistics indicate that one in every 10 black youths have high blood pressure. If practiced over time, the meditation may reduce the risk of these teens developing cardiovascular disease, in addition to other added health benefits."

Back Pain and Yoga Guide Part 2

Posted: 13 Jun 2012 08:00 AM PDT

Article by Glen Wood - The Yoga Teacher

Yogic breathing and upper body exercises, however, can be extremely beneficial. After successful treatment gradual resumption of lower body postures can be very effective for developing lower body and abdominal strength and stability helping you with your back pain. As with any discipline it is always best to find the best teachers you can, and to study diligently.

In the first randomized trial of Iyengar yoga and back pain, 60 participants were placed in either a yoga group or an educational group. Both programs lasted 16 weeks. Participants had experienced low back pain for an average of 11.2 years, and 48% used pain medication. At the end of the study and at a three-month follow-up, those in the yoga group had significant reductions in back pain intensity, functional disability (including spinal range of motion), and use of pain medication. The results compare favourably with results obtained with physical therapy.

Chronic pain may be associated with a range of physical, social and psychological components. Although you may have taken effective steps to eliminate or reduce the physical causes of your back pain, these may not have been enough to address any associated changes in your personality or mental health. An approach such as biofeedback helps address your state of mind and can help you relax muscles.

Although other types of Yoga offer variations to the poses for students with limitations, the emphasis is usually still on form, rather than function. Viniyoga can adapt every Asana not only to accommodate limitations, but also to achieve a different outcome from the same pose, or simply to enhance the results of any given pose for a particular body type.

You then learn how to produce these changes yourself. The goal is to help you enter a relaxed state in which you can better cope with your back pain. Reviews of studies on the use of biofeedback in people with chronic low back pain, show conflicting evidence regarding its effectiveness.

A new type of physical! therapy , called Souchard's global postural re-education, helps relieve back pain symptoms due to degenerative disk disease, according to research presented at the 2005 American Academy of Neurology Annual Meeting. The method involves stretching weakened muscles around the spine and stomach. Researchers studied 102 people who had at least 7 months of severe back pain due to disk disease and who had received different types of treatment for more than 6 months.

EU welcomes “measured” Burmese response to rioting

Posted: 13 Jun 2012 07:00 AM PDT

The European Union said on Monday it was satisfied with Myanmar's "measured" handling of the Muslim-Buddhist violence that engulfed one of its biggest towns at the weekend.

As rival mobs of Muslims and Buddhists torched houses in Sittwe, the biggest town in northwestern Myanmar, police fired into the air and Muslims fled to neighboring Bangladesh.

The fighting was the worst communal violence since a reformist government replaced a junta last year, began to allow political pluralism and vowed to tackle ethnic divisions – moves that helped persuade the United States and European Union to suspend economic sanctions.

Brussels made clear that it did not believe …

Subconscious Mind: The Greatest Natural Gift to Achieve Success

Posted: 13 Jun 2012 06:00 AM PDT

Article by muralics

The conscious mind may be compared to a fountain playing in the sun and falling back into the great subterranean pool of subconscious from which it arises.- Sigmund Freud.

Hey! You're conscious now whilst reading this article, are you? Well... You'll be unconscious in sleep, but your subconscious is awake forever and keeps account of everything happening around you.Your subconscious is the greatest power in you; it can do almost anything for you, provided you know how to use it and that is possible when you understand how it works? I used to question myself, if subconscious is that powerful then why can't we use this mine of knowledge or rather how to use it? I found out many really interesting facts on how our subconscious mind acts upon.As you've software programs to make the computer work, exactly the same way you must program your mind, and the programs you make will manifest the results and now that is what you call your will and so it is fulfilled. How about some of your problems which are not solved? Then what's the problem? Well it is your conscious mind which knows the reality and creates problem, I know you are asking me how is this possible because we consciously make such affirmations, what's failing?Society around you has programmed your mind with many messages from your childhood since then when you were not aware of your thought process, and all such information is stored in your precious storage room the subconscious mind. Many a times the society imposes messages such as "you can do it" "you are stupid" "don't take risk" "don't do that" so on you can now imagine the bad effect of such messages on any person. let's take an example to make it more clear, your consciousness acts as a teacher in the classroom who will allow you to enter if you deserve to be in or you are rejected, the same way if you say to yourself that "I am slim and my extra fat are lost" the subconscious has been fed with an idea that you are fat you can't reduce those extra fats, now the consciousness(acts ! as teach er) in you compares the information in sub conscious an rejects your thought, hence no result, hence this consciousness creates the problem many a times.Instead tell to yourself "I am in a process of becoming thin, and I am losing those extra fats" this message is excepted as this is right because your conscious mind knows that you are always in a process.Remember your subconscious mind has no sense of humor, play no jokes and cannot tell the difference between reality and an imagined thought or image. What we continually think about eventually will manifest in our lives. We must realize that the subconscious mind is the set of rules for action and always tries to express what the conscious mind has impressed on it. What we conceive ourselves to be w become. Thanks for the recent advancements in science for there are many scientific programming techniques available which can program your subconscious without the knowledge of your conscious mind, such as NLP, Self Hypnosis, and many other techniques, and these are really our dreams come true.

Different messages

Posted: 13 Jun 2012 06:00 AM PDT

This might not seem like much of a blog today.  I just want it to underscore the fact that translations of the same Pali text can often be quite different yielding a different message.

Here is a verse from the Dhammapada (367) that is being presented as an accurate translation which, in my opinion, doesn't bring forth the original sense of the Pali.

He who has no thought of "I" and "mine" whatever towards mind and body, he who grieves not for that which he has not, he is indeed called a Bhiksu.

This verse is clearly not very clear—as clear as it might be.  Here is how verse should read:

He, indeed, is a mendicant (bhikkhu) who not attached to any name and form (namarupasmim), who does not grieve for things which do not exist (asata ca na socati).

The phrase name and form, i.e., namarupa, according to the commentary, refers to the Five Aggregates, our psychophysical body, which the Buddha says, in many discourses, are not the self (anattâ).  On the same track, the canon informs us that the aggregates are considered to be illusory.  They also belong to Mara the Evil One.

The Buddha is really saying in this verse, don't get attached to your psychophysical body; don't grieve for it because it really doesn't exist.  Of course, this leads to the question of what does really exist.  This is your Buddha-nature.

Spa Getaways Can Lead To A Major Reduction In Stress

Posted: 13 Jun 2012 05:00 AM PDT

Article by Alfred Ardis

If you find that your days are becoming way too stressful, consider a retreat to the spa. Here you can find soft relaxing sounds, a completely calm environment and a staff of people who want to attempt to meet your every need. This is the type of place that will make the hassles of work and home seem very far away. Here are just a few ways that a day all for yourself can make the stress disappear.

Skipping Out on Work and Responsibility

Everyone looks forward to taking a day off from work. Imagine being able to enjoy a day with no responsibility. As soon as you step through the doors of the spa, everything that needs to be done, everything that is bothering you completely disappears. You have the opportunity to completely change your focus. On this type of day it can be all about you.

If possible, make sure that you don't have anything important going on during the day you schedule to come into the spa. You can miss out on the complete experience if you only leave to take on all of the issues that you left behind. You also don't want to be in the midst of a hectic day to just barely arrive on time to get to your special time. Take the entire day to just be away from it all.

Being Out of Contact

How often do you walk away from the computer? Do you always have your cell phone on? Being at the spa means that you are unreachable for a certain amount of time. For many men and women, this in and of itself is one of the most beneficial aspects of your day. You can bring the phone along, but at the very least you have to turn it off or make sure the ringer is off. You don't want a loud ringing to disturb your time or anyone else's time. While you are still surrounded by people like the other clients and the massage therapists, you have a small sense of solitude. Sometimes in order to relieve stress, bring away from people you know can help.

Special Treatments

There is nothing like a massage to rid you and your body of stress. By the time it is done you will notice! a diffe rence in your neck, back and shoulders. You may even notice that some of the more tense places in your body are more relaxed. Those knots that you have been feeling can be manipulated until they have disappeared. Some people even end up feeling a little sore after their treatment. This is a welcomed change from the usual tension they experience. If you have noticed that things are just becoming more and more stressful, take some time to make an appointment at your local spa.

Z Meditation Center is known as Deep Deconditioning Inquiry

Posted: 13 Jun 2012 04:00 AM PDT

Article by Lily Candice

The art of meditation may be learnt at dedicated meditation centers. Meditation centers have been set up by experienced and established teachers. The purpose of embracing the knowledge obtainable from meditation centers is the freedom of the mind – a state of being characterized by feelings of love, peace and happiness. Meditation centers are found aplenty in India, one of which is the Z Meditation Center. Based in Dharamsala, the Z Meditation center is run by Ajay Kapoor, a dedicated meditation teacher. Most meditation centers follow their own unique approach to the art of meditation. The basic technique applied at the Z Meditation Center is known as Deep Deconditioning Inquiry. The cause of many of our issues in life is borne out of our desires and expectations. We have been taught that the fulfillment of desires is the path to happiness. When this goal is not achieved, we begin to apportion blame all around: The government, our teachers, our parents, our friends .... Every fault is found, and we become extremely restless in trying to change other peoples' behavior. The teachings at meditation centers will have you come to the realization that the peace you so earnestly seek everywhere is within you. All that need be done is dig up and root out the false beliefs and conditionings. The result: a "clear and still lake" that allows vision to the very bottom. This is how your mind will become when you are living in awareness. The Deep Deconditioning Inquiry technique of the Z Meditation Center takes you through simple and logical steps useful in removing the clutter from your mind. There is nothing esoteric or mysterious about this process. Everything is easy and available to the open mind. Although meditation centers have their roots in the ancient Buddhist religious practice, the systems have been developed to the extent that they are applicable no matter your background. The ease of this systematic approach is such that demonstrable progress has been observed in some students after a few days of ! the prac tice. The most basic requirement for attending meditation centers is a willing heart. You must have come to realize that change is needed in your thought pattern – the window to your soul. If a disciplined approach is added to this sincere spirit, the first hurdle has already been breached, and the door is open for you to embrace true freedom. What can be more important for you than to be free to live? You will find out that decision making becomes simple. Furthermore, your physical health will show a dramatic improvement.Meditation centers are very cost effective, especially when you compare the cost against the benefits. A 3 day retreat, for example, will be more affordable than a typical night at a night club. For the truly desirous, partaking of a program at meditation centers may just be the most viable vacation plan. At meditation centers, you will not be required to spend much of your money while all your basic comfort needs will be well catered for.

"I didn't have to die, not on a cross nor anyplace else. As you can see, John, I'm far from dead. My followers, if you look over there," as he pointed to Peter and Paul,"Were a group of pretty somber folks and I had to make quite an impression on them. I had to make sure they got the message and were going to teach others about the laws of life. They quickly forgot the 'miracles and parables,' but my so called 'death and resurrection' gave them the incentive they needed to spread the message. Naturally, after all was said and done, somewhere along the way their followers got everything mixed up. They started worshipping me instead of teaching and living what I'd taught them. The same thing happened to my friend here, Prince Gautama, or as he's more commonly known, the Buddha."

The Buddha took up the conversation. "When I first began to understand the laws of the universe, I was sitting under a Bodhi tree. I thought how wonderful it would be to share what I'd found. But those who came after me interpreted and misinterpreted what I tried to say. You can't even recognize some of the things I taught them. Well, there'll be others of us who'll keep trying. To raise ourselves higher, we must endeavor to raise the consciousness of the entire human race."

"Will you still help us then?"

"I,Jesus and others, will always be with you to help, if you call upon us. Just believe that we're with you, and there we are. No need for meaningless sacrifices and rituals. You have direct access to the Chief, direct access to any of us. Only believe and know that this is so."

Confucius came over and joined in the conversation. "Listen, John," he said. "We've all been trying to say the same thing for ages. The Buddha's message was love. Jesus exemplified this best. He taught about love. Love your God. Love your neighbor. Love yourself. Remember the Golden Rule? Love is the most powerful force in the universe. The whole thing is very simple. People must learn that they are all shipmates on the common! voyage of life and that they cannot sink their shipmates without sinking themselves. Ask Gandhi over there and he'll tell you. You must love without expecting anything in return. Ask God. He loves us exactly as we are. You should try love sometimes. Work on love, John. Don't try to teach people how to love. Yoga and Back Pain Part 2

Posted: 13 Jun 2012 02:00 AM PDT

Article by Glen Wood - The Yoga Teacher

Although back pain is often caused by an injury to one or more of the structures of the back, it may have another cause. Factors that increase your risk for back pain and injury include getting older, having a family history of back pain, sitting for long periods, lifting or pulling heavy objects, or having a degenerative disease such as osteoporosis. Chronic pain syndrome caused by a previous injury or degenerative disease with aging can cause back pain. Many problems in the neck resulting from injury, recurring work strain, stress, and possibly joint degeneration can lead to head pain. Sudden back pain is characterized by: pain which lasts less than a month and half swelling and/or bruising in the area of injury.

Problems

Thai or yoga massage, physiotherapy or spinal therapy treatment for this type of back injury usually give good results and can reduce recovery time and prevent ongoing problems. Injuries such as sprains and fractures, mechanical problems including muscle spasms and imbalance and herniated discs, various acquired conditions of the spine including osteoporosis and rarely, infections and tumours may all give rise to back pain.

Still other studies have found that problems in the cervical spine can cause pain similar to headache. Walking and other cardiovascular exercises have been found to reduce and/or alleviate chronic pain problems, including a tension headache. Whether resulting from a severe or minor injury or daily wear and tear, most people will suffer from back problems at some point in their lives.

Work comfort and design will help most back problems that occur in the workplace which are caused by physical stress, such as being in an awkward position for a long time, making the same motions over and over, and simply using your back too much. Back pain is one of the most common medical problems, which will affect about eight out of 10 people at some point during their lives.

Medical

Medical reports on yoga. Many doctors are now verify! ing that yoga is beneficial in treating a number of health problems, including back pain. Until recently headaches were largely considered a nuisance by the medical community and many other health care providers. Headaches are one of the most common reasons that people seek both medical and body work or chiropractic treatment. Because of their greater flexibility and lack of age related degeneration, children and teenagers are much less prone than adults to develop medically significant back pain.

In spite of the magnitude of the problem, a simple, effective cure for backache has proved elusive to modern medical science other than yoga. With a burning sensation of shoulder pain, desk bound and computer users may suffer from back pain on different sides of the body.

Untrue intuitions lead people to not believe in science

Posted: 13 Jun 2012 12:00 AM PDT

Religious people often claim that believing in God is a difficult path to follow, since it goes against the ways of the world.

Actually, understanding the truth about materiality is a lot tougher than embracing spiritual falsities. If you doubt this, check out an interesting New Yorker article by Jonah Lehrer, "Why We Don't Believe in Science."

The main conclusion I drew from the piece is this: if our intuitions about how the physical world works often are so wrong, why should we believe that our intuitions about God, heaven, soul, spirit, and other aspects of a supposed spiritual world are correct?

Some excerpts:

Last week, Gallup announced the results of their latest survey on Americans and evolution. The numbers were a stark blow to high-school science teachers everywhere: forty-six per cent of adults said they believed that "God created humans in their present form within the last 10,000 years." Only fifteen per cent agreed with the statement that humans had evolved without the guidance of a divine power.

...Such poll data raises questions: Why are some scientific ideas hard to believe in? What makes the human mind so resistant to certain kinds of facts, even when these facts are buttressed by vast amounts of evidence?

A new study in Cognition, led by Andrew Shtulman at Occidental College, helps explain the stubbornness of our ignorance. As Shtulman notes, people are not blank slates, eager to assimilate the latest experiments into their world view.

Rather, we come equipped with all sorts of naïve intuitions about the world, many of which are untrue. For instance, people naturally believe that heat is a kind of substance, and that the sun revolves around the earth. And then there's the irony of evolution: our views about our own development don't seem to be evolving.

This means that science education is not simply a matter of learning new theories. Rather, it also requires that students unlearn their instincts, shedding false beliefs the way a snake sheds its old skin.

...It would be so much more convenient if the laws of physics lined up with our naïve beliefs—or if evolution was wrong and living things didn't evolve through random mutation. But reality is not a mirror; science is full of awkward facts. And this is why believing in the right version of things takes work.

Of course, that extra mental labor isn't always pleasant. (There's a reason they call it "cognitive dissonance.") It took a few hundred years for the Copernican revolution to go mainstream. At the present rate, the Darwinian revolution, at least in America, will take just as long.

The Seven Spiritual Law of Success - The Secret to Effortless Sucess

Posted: 12 Jun 2012 11:00 PM PDT

Article by Kevin John

"Work hard and you'll be successful" is a common saying. The corollary that you can't succeed without hard work is a widely held belief. Yet a few people seem to succeed effortlessly. If you want to join them you need to understand the "Law of Least Effort"

The law of least effort is one of the seven spiritual laws of success. The law states that if you follow natural principles you should not have to struggle to create whatever you want. If you desire success it can be effortless, provided you follow the correct path.

Look at nature: nature does not struggle to achieve it's objectives. Plants do not struggle to grow, they merely grow and express themselves in the form that they are destined to achieve. The universe just continues to do what it continues to do without making any special effort.

Looking at the universe through scientific eyes, it is obeying one very important principle - the minimisation of energy. Everything that happens in the world happens with the expenditure of as little energy as possible.

Humans are not separate from these natural laws, but we have evolved some very powerful capabilities. Our most powerful capability is that we effortlessly manifest whatever we spend our time focussing our minds on. The problem is that many people do not realise this and they spend their time focussing on what they don't want or don't need. They are surprised when they effortlessly create what they don't want or don't need.

One area where you probably spend a lot of energy that you don't need is in maintaining and feeding your ego - your sense of yourself as something that is separate from the rest of the universe.

Some of the areas you may put a lot of energy into are: consciously seeking money and status, looking for power, looking for control or even seeking approval. These are all directly related to your need to protect and even inflate your own ego.

When you make the conscious effort to stop channelling energy into these wasteful activiti! es, you free up tremendous amounts of energy for creating what you really want to create, including wealth, happiness and health.

The key to success in this area is to see yourself as part of the universe rather than separate from it. Achieving a state of compassion and love for everything that is part of that universe will help you to feel a part of an extended universe. Your love and compassion should extend to you - you are part the universe! Love is a universal law that binds everything together and by getting into this state you can align yourself with the rest of the universe

As you align yourself with the Law of Least Effort and you channel more of your energy into manifesting what you truly desire, you will need less time and less action to achieve those results. If you become truly proficient at this process you could get to the point where you nothing and yet you achieve everything you want. If you do, you will have travelled a long way from the belief that you need to work hard to succeed.

The seven spiritual laws of success are built upon natural principles. You can build these natural principles into your life as a bedrock for your path to future prosperity and happiness. Would you like to learn more about the the seven spiritual law of success?
