All About Guided Chakra Meditation

Many people today think that meditation is not something that they can do regularly, or not at all. Even though millions of Americans meditate every single day, there are still millions of those who believe that meditation is something that only priests and monks do. The reason why they think this is the fact that many people cannot even imagine reaching a state of mind and a body so relaxed to start meditating. While it is true that beginners often have a tough time reaching this state of relaxation and concentration, it is also important to mention that chakra meditation and guided meditation in general can help you achieve this state of relaxation by taking you to it step by step and telling you a story that will take you where you need to go.

Guided meditation is a form of meditation which is the best for those people who really want to start meditating and start cleansing their chakras, but simply cannot picture themselves, reaching the level of relaxation and focus needed for meditation. Basically, what guided meditation offers is exactly what its name promises - a guidance throughout the process of meditation. This is exactly what most people need when they start meditating. Most people need someone to talk to them in a soothing voice, someone who will be there to tell them what to do, how to relax, when to do what and so on.

Owing to the fact that chakra meditation is a form of meditation that lets you cleanse your chakras to reach a state in which your body and mind will be perfectly relaxed and ready for any challenge that lies ahead, many people are beginning to take up this type of meditation. Now, most of these people are not able to clean their chakras without significant help from others who are much more experienced with the word of meditation and guided meditation has proven to be the best choice for all beginners in this field.

Guided chakra meditation is definitely something everyone who feels like they need to relax! and cle anse their body and mind should take up, because through this type of meditation everybody will be able to focus only on what is important and stay focused throughout the period of time needed to cleanse the chakras each and every day, or week. Therefore, if you are thinking about taking up meditation, guided chakra meditation is something you should always start with.

If you're looking for piece of mind and breath taking scenery, then be sure to check a Canada bed and breakfast guide to inform yourself of the multiple possibilities this country has to offer. For all the husbands out there looking for the perfect gift - no lady would ever under appreciate the ideal reservation to Canada mountain spa for an extensive relaxation, beautification and -why not? - even healing. Regardless of your budget for vacation, Canada has every type of accommodation you might consider. If you're looking for a low cost, rustic B&B, the options are numerous, but the Canada bed and breakfast guide also offers useful information for those in search of a more luxurious holiday in the heart of the mountains. If the timing is right you may even witness special events, such as Canadian rockies weddings, which are carefully and meticulously planned by the dedicated locals. It certainly is an original idea that is worth taking into consideration.

Whether you are the Canada mountain spa type or enjoy traveling with your backpack and save your money for the attractions, the guide will offer precious listings of bed and breakfasts, reviews and photographs, so that you can find the best fitted option for you. Some B&Bs are designed to create a familiar atmosphere, as if you've never left your house or as if you're staying in a great mansion with your friends. You can find the guide together with all its valuable information on the Internet, where you can also see the diversity of attractions and entertainment sights at your disposal. The experience will surely be unforgettable as the personnel is trained in various wellness treatments and therapy massages. Diverse packages and offers are available here too and the Canada bed and breakfast guide will take you just a step closer to finding the best spa and therefore your intrinsic self. If you are lucky your little vacation may overlap with the housing of events such as Canadian Rockies weddings, which are astounding ceremonies, partly due to the unique scenery of the location and partly because of the professionalism of the services. It goes beyond the memorable status of a once-in-a-lifetime event and passes the threshold into fairytale. I am convinced that everyone designs their wedding to be different and unparalleled, but Canadian Rockies weddings are bewildering to the core and might even cost you a little bit less.

Why Tasers Sometimes Kill

In rare cases, people have gone into cardiac arrest and died after being shocked in the chest with stun guns such as Tasers, and now researchers say they better understand why this happens.

Researchers looked at eight cases involving men and teen boys who lost consciousness after getting shocked by the TASER X26, a weapon widely used by law enforcement and the military.

In each case, the stun gun was applied to the chest, and the individuals experienced cardiac arrest after their hearts began to beat either too fast or abnormally.

Seven of the eight males died, while one survived with impaired memory.

"In no way am I saying that we shouldn't use Taser weapons, but if you use it, be aware that cardiac arrest is a possibility," said study author Dr. Douglas Zipes, a cardiologist at Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis.

Stun-gun use can be risky

The handgun-shaped weapon shoots two barbed darts into a person's skin or clothing. The darts are connected to wires that deliver 50,000 volts of electrical current for five seconds. The shock temporarily subdues the individual, causing them pain and muscle contractions.

"I think many law enforcement users are not aware of the possibility of cardiac arrest," Zipes said.

In 2009, stun gun manufacturers advised users to avoid shooting the weapons at people's chests. But it doesn't seem that the message has gotten out, Zipes noted.

The safety of stun guns has been questioned by advocacy groups such as Amnesty International, which reported more than 300 stun gun-related deaths in the U.S. between 2001 and 2008.

Zipes recommended that users pull the trigger a single time to avoid repeated or lasting shocks.

"That should be sufficient," he said. "But that's a judgment they have to make in the field."

Cause of cardiac arrest still unclear

The eight cases that Zipes analyzed were under litigation, and involved healthy males who were shocked near or over the heart. All lost consciousness after receiving the shock.

In six cases, records of heart rhythms after the shock showed ventricular tachycardia, a condition where the heart beats too fast, and ventricular fibrillation, where the heart beats irregularly. In one case, the person did not respond and had no heartbeat.

The study adds to existing evidence, including studies in pigs, sheep and humans, which show that stun guns aimed at the chest may lead to cardiac arrest. But not all deaths following stun-gunshocks can be linked to electrical shock, Zipes noted.

Dr. Robert Myerburg, a cardiologist at the University of Miami who wasn't involved with the study, said that while he doesn't disagree with the information reported in the study, he also isn't entirely convinced that shocks to the chest are always the cause of cardiac arrest.

"Most, if not all of the incidents, were associated with stressful situations — that can also contribute to triggering cardiac arrest," Myerburg said.

Zipes suggested that stun-gun users avoid shooting at the chest, and monitor the person after they have been shocked. Stun-gun users should be prepared to resuscitate anyone who loses consciousness with an external defibrillator, he said.

The study was published in the May issue of the journal Circulation.

Pass it on: Stun-gun shock could lead to cardiac arrest, even death.

Use the various medium available to learn meditation for beginners

Posted: 01 Jun 2012 08:00 AM PDT

Article by Rockeysheen01

Any kind of process in this world needs a beginning. And interestingly the beginning is the most difficult part. Once you start the process, it is quite easy to progress in that, but making the first go at it is important and difficult as well. The same applies for meditation as well. This is the reason that there are special techniques of meditation for beginners. Through these techniques people learn the basic things that are associated with meditation. Once they know the various ways of meditation at the initial levels, it is not difficult for them to learn the advanced techniques. Meditation is having total control on the mind and the body. Through the various meditation techniques it is possible to combat many problems in your life. In the initial stages of meditation for beginners this is taught to the students. If you are still confused as from where to start the process, it is best if you join a meditation class. If that is not possible, you can also choose other mediums that can help you in learning meditation in a great way. Check out magazines on meditation, read books on the same or you can also study the various kinds of videos that are related with the same. Meditation for beginners begins with choosing a proper place and a proper posture. In the initial levels, it is very important that you choose a place which is away from the din and bustle of life. It is preferable if meditation is practiced early morning when the mind and the body remain fresh and fine. Choose a place which is open and well ventilated. You can practice meditation on the terrace of your house or in an open park, wherever is comfortable for you. You can also meditate in your own room by opening all the windows and well-ventilating it. The posture of meditation also matters a lot in meditation. In the various techniques of meditation for beginners, it is advised that people should have a correct posture for meditation. Sit straight with your back upright. Breathing exercises practiced in this posture can give wonde! rful res ults to the beginners of meditation. They can feel the change from outside and inside. However, never overstrain yourself in doing this. Do as much is comfortable with you. Once you catch up with the process, the body will have increased capacity to accommodate more exercises and meditation techniques.

Infusing Play into Mundane Tasks

Posted: 01 Jun 2012 08:00 AM PDT

'It is a happy talent to know how to play.' ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

Post written by Leo Babauta.

When I write about loving every moment and loving what you do, people often ask, "What about when you have to do something you don't like?"

You can't always enjoy what you're doing, right?

Actually, you can. You just have to remember what it's like to be a child.

Sure, there are things we have to do every day that we might think are boring: household chores, errands, routine tasks at work, being in a meeting that's makes you want to pound your head on the table. But those are only boring because we've chosen to make them boring.

Let's take my 6-year-old daughter Noelle as an example. She had to go to the dentist, which is a pretty routine thing for most people. We took the train and then walked a few blocks. In the train, she sang, found things fun to see out the window, played games with me. As we walked, she talked about how the building the dentist is in might possibly reach the blue stuff in the sky, and wanted to bet me that it actually did (10 hugs if I won, $ 1 if she won). The elevator ride to the 18th floor was like a roller coaster ride to her.

Everything she does becomes a game, an opportunity for wonder and exploration, or at the very least an opportunity to sing a song. She's never bored. Why is that?

Because she doesn't see anything as boring. Everything is new, and there's always a game you can play.

We can do that too. Every chore can be turned into play. Every walk to the store can be infused with beginner's mind, so that we see our surroundings afresh, ripe for exploration. Every boring work task can be turned into a challenge, a game.

My 8-year-old son Seth runs everywhere, jumps everywhere. We're walking along the street and he's a werewolf, a wizard, a superhero. A living room becomes a place to make a fort, styrofoam becomes a toy, and if there's nothing to play with, he's pacing around making up stories in his head. How can you ever be bored when you see life like this?

We've had the play pounded out of us, from years of schooling and work. Bring the play back, by watching a kid and seeing how amazing life is for them.

(This post was inspired by Suraj Shah's post Last day living.)

Foo Dogs Lead the Pack: Antiquity Art is in Style

Posted: 01 Jun 2012 07:00 AM PDT

Article by Chris Robertson

As the saying goes, what's old is new again. That's never truer than when it comes to home decorating. Buddhist art in general - and Foo Dogs in particular - has become increasingly popular with professional and amateur decorators alike. Many people were first exposed to Buddhist art when feng shui - the Chinese art and science of arranging space in harmony with the environment - first became popular. Although feng shui has is roots in Taoism, the Chinese incorporated Buddhist art, such as Foo Dogs, into the design of their buildings from the second century B.C.Foo Dogs, sometimes known as guardian lions, are generally placed on either side of a building's entrance. According to Buddhist tradition, Foo Dogs are the guardians of Dharma, or the Truth. Typically displayed in pairs, the male lion has his paw on a representation of the Earth, and the female has her paw on her cub. Male Foo Dogs protect the actual building, while female Foo Dogs protect those inside the building. Historically, they were placed at the gates of temples, at the entrances to tombs, and at the front of altars. Today, replicas of Foo Dogs are often used outdoors as decorative elements at the bottoms of driveways or indoors near the front doors. Foo Dogs are not the only forms of Buddhist art that are popular with decorators and collectors. A bronze Buddha or a laughing Buddha is often displayed in living rooms, studies, and master bedrooms. The peacefulness and tranquility that a bronze Buddha or a laughing Buddha radiates is a welcome respite after a stressful commute or a long day at the office.Buddhist art isn't the only form of ancient art that has increased in popularity. Both Egyptian art and Greek art have enjoyed a resurgence of interest. For example, plaques depicting Isis or Anubis adorn many modern walls. In ancient Egypt, Isis was worshipped as one who protected her son from danger and who would protect mortal children as well. Anubis, typically depicted as having the head of a jackal, is known as the God of the D! ead. As with Egyptian art, many people are choosing to decorate their homes with replicas of Greek art pieces. Vases, wall sculptures, busts, and friezes are all being used as decorating elements in today's homes. Many women feel empowered when they see sculptures of ancient Goddesses, and are giving such sculptures places of honor in their homes. As testaments to their faith, Christians are embracing the concept of incorporating Christian art into their homes. Christian art may take the form of depictions of The Last Supper or The Ten Commandments, or may even include statues of angels and saints.

A Spiritual Teacher IS.....

Posted: 01 Jun 2012 06:00 AM PDT

Article by CG Walters

It is not the teacher before you that manifests what you perceive as an awakening, but the awakening within you that manifests what you perceive as a teacher.

For most of my years, I sought my idea of a traditional spiritual teacher to provide me with truth, teach me knowledge. I sought that rarefied being, flawless and wise who could give to me the connection to the Absolute that I imagined I was living uncomfortably without. In the end, much to my dismay, I repeatedly found my appointees inadequate. Over and over I concluded that I had not found the right person, but I have come to realize that it was the "right perception" I was lacking.

Not that my efforts were in vain--I am thankful for them. Obsessively staring into a mirror, trying to focus on the horizon, can induce some pretty profound results. The horizon seen turns out not to be "out there."

"The fool who persists in his folly will become wise." William Blake

I found that it was my criterion for a teacher that was flawed, not any of the individuals that I tried to project the title onto. My efforts eventually brought me to the realization that in subtle mysteries like wisdom and spirit--the student/teacher relationship is not linear or well-defined, but more amorphous in nature. One moment I was comfortable in the compliant role I imaged to be a student and then I was scared to death to realize that the roles had reversed...and then back to being 'student', and then reversed again.

In truth, we all teacher and student--involved in a multi-faceted process, perfectly balanced as every one of us being teacher to and student of every other, simultaneously. To consider oneself as more one aspect of the process than the other is an illusion, and limits our collective experience.

Many of my best teachers--those who have given me lessons that have remained as significant tenets of my belief system--are people I no longer allow to have an active part in my life. There are two distinct reasons for this:1. One! does no t have to be wise to instill wisdom, virtuous to promote virtue.2. Once you complete the 1st grade, you do not continue to go back to that teacher's classroom. There is undoubtedly more the teacher could teach you, but it is a matter of diminishing return--the final lesson of the student is to move on. Not to do so is to fail the teaching.

I do not discount those remarkable individuals that have obtained conscious levels of awareness of their connection to the Absolute that I do not consistently maintain at this time. They do indeed exist, I can feel the uniqueness of them whenever I encounter such a person--even those who do not, themselves, know of the power of their connection.

Even with such a person universally acknowledged as a teacher, my perspective is that instruction is offered most often because it is what 'students' expect/demand. It is like getting someone about to panic to focus on your moving finger--a hypnotic induction to calm, allowing the student to return to a natural state of their own knowledge/wisdom.

It is not the mystic's perspective that changes our reality, but experiencing their reality that changes our perspective.

The real change comes about within us from spending time in the higher vibrational field of a true teacher...either directly in their presence or indirectly in the rhythm of their teaching (as a mantra may introduce peacefulness in meditation). They have seen the 'face' of the Absolute, they remember it, and the memory of that experience radiates from them--within or without word. One way or another, a true teacher holds open a sacred, safe place for the student to explore and lay claim to their own truth. A teacher reawakens one to the resonance of the Absolute so that the student can-on their own-find their way home to the Absolute, to their true Self.

A teacher, or at least a skilled teacher, is someone with perceptive enough to comprehend the information most needed by the student, intelligent enough to purposely construct the m! eans of the instruction, adept enough to elicit the learning without being intrusive on the student's experience, and wise enough to realize he or she was the led in the process by the spirit of student.

A teacher should not give so much of self or knowledge, but give to the student themself.

A true teacher does not impart wisdom or learning, but draws forth the student's own wisdom. The act of who is drawing forth--and not any defined role--shows us who is teacher and who is student at that moment.

The order of need is no respecter of hierarchy. One may follow a path without a teacher, but to be a teacher, One needs a student.

Spiritual teaching is not something that you can choose, but rather something that chooses you.

Yoga Helping Autism Children

Posted: 01 Jun 2012 04:00 AM PDT

Article by Yoga Born

signs of growth are all around

I am thrilled to grow the PBI Learning Center's Yoga Therapy Program and "in home" Programs. As a Certified Yoga Teacher I look forward to helping create the best experience possible for the children in the Autism Spectrum.

I love being outdoors to see the signs of growth! As seeds make breakthroughs from their hard shell exterior. We see signs of this growth as they climb through the earth to blossom and fruit. Reminding us of the breakthroughs in our lives. When we stick to our vision with tenacity and resilience we grow and achieve.

Yoga Primer... Yoga is a scientific system of physical and mental practice that originated in India more the 3,000 years ago. Its purpose is to help each one of us achieve our highest potential and to experience enduring health and happiness. With yoga, we can extend our healthy productive years far beyond the accepted norm and at the same time, improve the quality of our lives.

The branch of yoga that forms the main focus of my teaching work with both adults and children is called Hatha Yoga. Hatha Yoga begins by working with the body on a structural level, helping to align the vertebrae, increase flexibility, and strengthen muscles and tendons. At the same time, internal organs are toned and rejuvenated; the epidermal, digestive, lymphatic, cardiovascular, and pulmonary systems are purified of toxins and waste matter; the nervous and endocrine systems are balance and toned; and the brain cells are nourished and stimulated, and a great sense of overall well-being.

Yoga Methods… During the Yoga Classes for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders in PBI Center and "in home" I'll focus on using the following Yoga Methods... (1) Asanas, or body postures; (2) pranayama, or breathing exercises; (3) music and sound therapy, and (4) deep relaxation.

Successful Family Living... I also encourage a least one parent to enroll in an adult yoga class. This helps to orient you ! with the experiences your child has and to provide you with an appreciation of the techniques and benefits of a yoga practice. Being consistent is much more effective in the long run rather than practicing yoga once in a while. I recommend that you allow your child at least one hour after eating before beginning a yoga session. If the child eats before the practice please make it a moderate portion. Loose-fitting clothes are recommended so movements are not restricted in any asanas or pranayama.

I look forward to teaching yoga methods to the children at PBI Learning Center and "in home" to boost their level of group participation and developing independence.

The Noble Eightfold Path

Posted: 01 Jun 2012 02:00 AM PDT

Article by Tony Ha

The Noble Eightfold Path also known in other languages and cultures as Sanskrit Ārya 'ṣṭāṅga mārgaḥ, Chinese Bāzhèngdào and Pāli Ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo, is a Buddhist tradition taught by the Buddha Śākyamuni. According to instruction, this Path, which takes its place as the fourth part amidst the fundamental Buddhist teachings known as the Four Noble Truths, is supposed to guide followers along a road that ends suffering.

The Noble Eightfold Path in a nutshell is the Buddhists practical guide to end suffering or dukkha. If covers mental rehabilitation, ethics and mind de-conditioning, divided into eight elements that are subdivided into three main categories:

Wisdom (refers to the mental aspect)1. Right understanding2. Right intention

Ethical conduct3. Right speech4. Right action5. Right livelihood

Mental discipline6. Right effort7. Right mindfulness8. Right concentration

Note these are not steps to follow, but a well-rounded process. In fact, the Buddhist symbol for the Noble Eightfold Path is a wheel with eight spokes that represent the path's eight elements.

The Noble Eightfold Path, if viewed in the light of modern cognitive psychology, would be compared to cognitive dissonance or the not getting along of two cognitions. In relation to this concept, some believe that Buddhism focuses around emotions, sensations, cognition and feelings. And Buddha focuses on emotional; desire-related or aversion-related, plus cognitive suffering causes; ignorance-related along with the idea that all things are not perfect, not satisfactory, not necessary.

If viewed in the light of psychology, the Noble Eightfold Path tries to repair differences by changing thought and behavior. Hence the first element of the path seeks the right understanding how the mind views the world in reality. And continuing, how through wisdom, this worldview interacts with thought, what controls actions.

The Ties That Bind: Buddhism And Depression

Posted: 01 Jun 2012 12:00 AM PDT

Article by Joanne Miller

Buddhism and depression have long been two words closely connected. This is due to the overwhelming healing and understanding it is believe to be achieved in various states of meditation. In a state of complete wholeness and understanding, Buddhism and depression are converted to positive energies and released back into the atmosphere. This is one of the main reasons that there isn't a high incidence of depression among Buddhists.

When we examine the very definition of depression it is actually a state of feeling inferior to your environment and minimal control. This stage can influence an individual to seek out flaws and strongly dislike them. In this state of mind individuals begin to punish themselves in order to feel as though they have some control. Buddhism and depression is not a popular issue because through mediation, Buddhists are able to reach a higher state of being and are able to release those negative feelings and energies.

We are conditioned to believe that seeking knowledge from within is self-serving and a selfish act. Buddhism and depression is avoided because they are of the belief to seek inward to find all answers in personal lives as well as all aspects of life. The truth of our lives is not that we are predominantly bad and should be forever punished for it. Buddhists are taught to climb a mountain towards perfects and reach enlightenment through meditation and inner guidance.

Buddhists and all other denominations understand and have experienced pain of depression at one point in their lives. The pain of feeling that others are superior to you and that you are not good enough. It is so powerful it nearly throws the individual into a trance so we never have to confront the depression. Buddhism and depression are opposites by their very nature in that they understand and imagine a life without anxiety or about the imperfections of our human selves.

The character of Buddha is to understand that nature is perfect, and that humans are not, and that is jus! t being and is acceptable. Buddhism and depression are also avoided, as Buddhists believe that drugs alter the system in a numbing way and this can often induce feelings of inadequacy, guilt and a variety of other negative feelings.

They sustain from alcohol, which is a depressant, as well as foods that are rich in sugars and saturated fats as this is believed to bring on negative emotions and feelings as well. These are all contributing factors to which there is such a low number of Buddhists that suffer from depression.

Key to self-knowledge: knowing you don't have a "self"

Posted: 01 Jun 2012 12:00 AM PDT

I love the idea that "I" don't exist.

Life sure seems like it'd be a lot simpler without a "me" around. Most of my problems aren't physical, but psychological. So if my body is real, but my self isn't, potentially that removes a large source of difficulties.

Fortunately for the "me" who I don't want to be, modern neuroscience has come to a pretty firm conclusion that, indeed, the self is an illusion.

Such is the central theme of a book by Bruce Hood I've started to read, "The Self Illusion." I blogged about an interview Sam Harris did with Hood here. (Where I mistakenly called the book "Illusion of the Self," mixing up the title of Harris' blog post with the title of the book.)

In his introductory chapter, Hood offers props to Buddhism for getting right many hundreds of years ago what science has confirmed only recently: that who we are isn't a solid "pearl" of identity, but a complex "bundle" of processes, interrelationships, networked connections.

Still, we have to remember that Stress Reduction/Zen practices evolved during a pre-scientific phase of human culture. Some of those practices may still make sense today; others may not.

Thumbing through The Self Illusion, I could see (spoiler alert!) that Hood ends up saying that even though the self doesn't really exist as almost everybody feels it does -- as an entity separate and distinct from the goings-on of the brain -- there are good reasons why evolution has left us with a sense of "me."

So this implies that two significant goals of traditional spirituality, especially those of the Eastern variety, aren't worth pursuing.

(1) Self-knowledge or self-realization is out, because there is no self to know or realize.
(2) Losing or doing away with the self is out, because there is no self to lose or do away with (and also, because we need some sort of sense of self to function, even if that sense is illusory).

If early Stress Reductions had access to the findings of modern neuroscience, I suspect Buddhism would have turned out quite differently. Could be wrong about this, of course, since there's no way to redo history.

For us today, though, we can take books like The Self Illusion to heart. We can imbibe knowledge that wasn't available to all of those devoted Stress Reductions who have meditated and koan'd away for many years in attempts to know that the self which seems to be so real, isn't.

Now, traditional Stress Reductions would argue that reading a book about the self illusion isn't the same as actually seeing through the illusion.

Well, I need to finish reading The Self Illusion before deciding to what extent I agree.

But at the moment I'm inclined to argue with that traditional argument. Yes, Hood does say that it very difficult for anyone (Buddhists included) to deeply understand that conscious human experience is solely the product of brain processes, no "self" required.

Yet who gets to decide the extent to which someone does realize the self illusion? In the Zen tradition, a lineage of masters has the franchise on this deciding. If a Zen master declares you "enlightened," then, bingo, you are.

Absent such a declaration, you're a pretender. (Unless you're a Taoist, Hindu, or whatever, with different standards of enlightenment.)

As I've noted before, to me it's a lot like knowing that the Earth revolves around the Sun.

People who know this may say "that's a beautiful sunset," but if you asked them to explain those words, they'd add that this was just a way of speaking, since they know that the Sun stays put while the Earth revolves and rotates.

Who has the right to declare that one person really knows what produces a sunset, while another only has an intellectual knowledge? It'd be tough to get inside someone's head and figure out what they're experiencing when they watch a sunset.

Is an astronomer more sunset-enlightened than a poet? Is the author of The Self Illusion more cognizant of how the self is illusory than a Zen master? Could we ever tell? And... who cares?

Would NYC's Ban on Big Sodas Reduce Obesity? Experts Weigh In

Posted: 31 May 2012 11:00 PM PDT

A proposal to ban the sale of large, sugar-sweetened drinks in some New York City establishments is an important first step in combating the obesity epidemic but is not a solution on its own, experts say.

The proposal raises awareness about the problem of large food portions and supports a culture that consumes less, said Simone French, associate director of the University of Minnesota Obesity Prevention Center.

For instance, since the Coca-Cola Co. began selling its products, bottles often consumed as a single serving have increased in size  from 6.5 ounces to 20 ounces, French said. "We need to have a cultural shift back to more modest, reasonable, appropriate portion sizes if we want to help reduce the obesity epidemic," she said.

However, others say the proposed ban, which the city Board of Health is expected to consider over the summer and would not be adopted before next year, might be largely a symbolic move with no real effect on waistlines.

The proposal "sends a really important message" that soda is bad, particularly in large quantities, said registered dietitian Katherine Tallmadge, the author of "Diet Simple" (LifeLine Press, 2011). But people could still consume large amounts of high-calorie beverages by buying them from places where they are not banned, Tallmadge said.

Soda and other sugar-sweetened, high-calorie beverages are known to be important contributors to obesity because people tend to over-consume calories when they come in liquid form, French said. The proposal would ban the sale of some sugar-sweetened drinks — including soda, coffee, tea, and fruit drinks — in servings larger than 16 ounces at New York City food service outlets such as restaurants, movie theaters, delis and food carts.

The ban would not affect grocery stores or vending machines, and it would not apply to certain beverages, such as fruit juices that contain more than 70 percent juice, and drinks such as lattes and milk shakes that contain more than 51 percent milk.

Experts agreed the general lack of physical activity in American culture and high amounts of snacking play important roles in the obesity epidemic and wouldn't be negated by this ban.

Large portions, large waistlines

Presented with large portions, people are not eating "just enough" to meet their bodies' needs, and perhaps saving the rest for later, French said. Instead they are consuming the entire portion as a single serving, even if it's 20 ounces of soda in a bottle, French said.

The ban would make it harder for people to consume so much of a sugar-sweetened beverage because they would have to actively order two or more smaller containers, French said. "By having to do that, it will make you more aware of how much you are consuming," she said.

And by getting rid of "bargain-sized" beverages, the ban would do away with the financial motivation people may have had for buying them.

"It's not surprising that people were purchasing these larger sizes because of the quantity discounting," said Lisa Powell, an economics professor at the University of Chicago's Institute for Health Research and Policy. The ban would take this option off the table, Powell said.

Reducing obesity

To the extent that the ban could reduce calorie consumption, a reduction in people's weight could be expected, Powell said.

Some studies have shown that outright bans of soda and junk food in schools did not significantly reduce the weight of students. But these bans focused on only one source of sweet drinks (those sold in schools). The proposed ban is broader and thus could have a larger impact on the population, Powell said.

But we will have to wait and see if the ban has an impact on obesity, Powell said.

The ban ultimately may help, but "we need more than just this," French said. "Obesity didn't happen just because of soft drinks, it happens because of a lot of things."

Pass it on: Experts are divided on how effective New York City's proposed ban on sugar-sweetened beverages would be in combating obesity.

Buddhism religion history

Posted: 31 May 2012 10:00 PM PDT

Article by Nikhil Gangoli

In this Buddhism religion history, I will cover its history in India.

In actual fact Buddhism covered almost the whole of Asia - excluding perhaps Russia. But I cannot cover all these details in a short article.

The Shakyamuni Buddha founded Buddhism through his enlightenment and teaching. He livd between 563 BC and 483 BC

Buddhism gained in popularity in India mainly during the reign of King Asoka (274-236BCE) because of his patronage. Asoka is remembered in countries as far away as Japan because of his efforts to promote and spread Buddhism. Asoka played an important role in Buddhism religion history.

The doctrine which arose as a result of the original Buddha's teaching is Theravada Buddhism - or the Path of the Elders. It is also called Hinayana Buddhism.

Around and between the period 0-500 of the Christian era Mahayana Buddhism took shape in India. Mahayana is also called the Greater Vehicle as it contains many more skillful means to attain enlightenment as compared to the Theravada tradition.

So this is another important fact that must be mentioned in a Buddhism religion history.

Alan Watts describes the evolution of Mahayana Buddhism as a response to the psychological needs caused by following the original Theravada doctrine. There was also a need for transformation to meet the needs of new ages, new populations and different social circumstances. The old doctrine had become stale and was producing very few sages or Arahats. Thus, a new literature came into being and this is one of the most magnificent outbursts of creative energy in human history. The realized master Nagarjuna lived in this period, which lasted for almost 500 years. During this period also Mahayana Buddhism came in touch with non-Indian influence. In North-west India where it developed it came in touch with Greek culture as well as influences from the Mediterranean and the Iranian world. This is an important stage in Buddhism religion history.

This incidentally rendered Buddhis! m fit fo r export outside India as for it to spread to other countries it first had to go through a preliminary phase of de-Indianization.

Anyway, Buddhism spread over the next 1500 years starting around the beginning of the Christian era. Mahayana has conquered the entire Northern half of the Buddhist world and the Buddhists of Nepal, Tibet, Mongolia, China, Korea and Japan are nearly all Mahayanists.

In India itself Buddhism came to an end about 1200 A.D. though is some States and districts such as Magadha, Bengal, Orissa and South India it lingered on for another 200 or 300 years.

The main reason for this decline and extinction was the Muslim invasions. These ruthless conquerors - with their zeal and hatred of idolatry - burned down flourishing monasteries and universities in Sindh and Bengal and killed all the monks. This however was not the only reason as Hinduism and Jainism were subject to the same fury and stood their ground. The other reasons were:-

1) Hinduism had itself assimilated much of Mahayana Buddhist thought the Buddhist were now not teaching anything different and new.

2) Buddhism failed to benefit the laity substantially and depended for its patronage mostly on kings. Where such patronage was lacking, it declined. Jainism on the other hand had wealthy merchants patronizing them who considered it an honor to support ascetics. this is an important shortcoming of Buddhism in India and must be mentioned in any Buddhism religion history.

3) Buddhism had lost its creative impulse and no new literature and doctrines were being developed at that time.

4) The other- world Buddhist monks did not consider the country of their residence very important. When they were unable to practice their monastic discipline they simply left for other countries such as Nepal, Tibet, China, etc. Thus the very reasons that led to the spread of Buddhism to other countries in Asia caused its decline in India.

5) The Buddhist monks themselves regarded their own doctrine as hav! ing a li mited shelf life. All is transient according to Buddhism and their own religion is not excluded. Thus when circumstances were such as existed at that time the only thing to do was to retire gracefully from the scene. So this then is Buddhism religion history in India.

Dark Chocolate Lowers Heart Attack, Stroke Risk

Posted: 31 May 2012 10:00 PM PDT

Eating dark chocolate every day may lower the risk of having a heart attack or stroke for some people at higher risk of these conditions, a new study from Australia found.

Researchers gathered data on 2,013 people who had metabolic syndrome — which is a cluster of medical issues that includes high blood pressure, a large waist and low levels of "good" cholesterol — and used mathematical equations to predict how eating dark chocolate daily could affect the number of strokes and heart attacks the group would be expected to have.

Based on their results, the researchers calculated that for every 10,000 people with metabolic syndrome who ate 3.5 ounces of dark chocolate every day for 10 years, 70 non-fatal and 15 fatal cardiovascular events, such as heart attacks or strokes, could be prevented.

Studies have shown that the risk of cardiovascular disease can be lowered over the short-term by eating compounds called flavonoids, which are abundant in dark chocolate. Flavonoids are known to have antihypertensive and anti-inflammatory effects, which relieve pressures on the heart, the researchers said.

The new study suggests that eating dark chocolate is a cost-efficient way to reduce the number of heart attacks and strokes in this study population over a longer term, the researchers said.

The researchers noted that the study only looked at strokes and heart attacks, so how dark chocolate might affect the risks of other cardiovascular diseases, such as heart failure, must still be assessed.

The study was published today (May 31) in the British Medical Journal, and was funded by the Australian Research Council and the drug company Sanofi-Aventis Australia.

Pass it on: For people with higher risk of heart attack or stroke, adding dark chocolate to the daily diet may reduce risk.

Benefit Of Meditation

Posted: 31 May 2012 09:00 PM PDT

Article by Jeff Hudson

What is the benefit of meditation? Generally, the human nervous system is made up of three major parts which are the central, the peripheral as well as the autonomic nervous systems. The benefit of these systems is that they help us in controlling our perception towards the universe. The greatest benefit of meditation is that it betters body's health. In actual sense, there is stress relief while initiating peace of soul. To understand meditation at a higher level, we could focus on the seven chakras. It is important to understand how to open chakras when it comes to meditation and its benefits. When one of the seven chakras is blocked, the organs controlled by the blocked chakras may dysfunction which may later lead to illness.Meditation attacks these causes thus hindering any chakras blockage by maintaining balance. Balance is achieved through rebalancing the subtle system as well as cleaning the centers. It is said that when one learns or becomes an expert on how to open chakras, even the most incurable diseases can be cured through these process. The art of opening chakras can be referred to as chakras meditation. As said, not only are there benefits of meditation in general, but there are enormous benefits of chakras meditation. Besides the physical benefits, mental benefits can also be regarded as the positive impact of meditation. This can be explained by understanding the importance of silence. During meditation, silence is the main tool of trade. Realism is ascertained through un-altered images in the current environmental surroundings. Another benefit of chakras or meditation in general is attained emotionally.

Awakening the Kundalini brings our emotions to balance. Weaknesses focused on greed, jealousy or a feeling of insecurity are brought down or reduced. The joy of meditation can also be extended spiritually. In yoga for instance, truth, awareness and bliss are the factors that connect the meaning of meditation. The chakras which are located strategically in the body are regard! ed as th e most important body systems. The head, the heart are some of the locations for these chakras. There is a general number of seven chakras. Each of these chakras has its own use to the body. It is important to understand that each and every of the said chakras can only be opened through meditation. The opening of the chakras is important because as we have seen, blocked chakras can leave to illnesses where as the opposite of this can lead to improved health.Awakening of chakras can cure the most complicated illnesses of all time. Meditation is not the only way of opening these chakras; it can also be voted that yoga can also be used although meditation has far been known as the most preferable technique. Stress can be an overwhelming factor of life, in fact, continued stress leads to depression which can later lead to mental breakdown. In order to hinder these possibilities, coming up or devising ways of keeping the brain less focused to realities of life but rather composed to a different dimension of life can truly help minimize the entire overload of the brain that leads to stress. This composition is achieved through meditation. Therefore if you are truly questioning the objectives of meditation, you ought to know that relieving stress is one of them. The physiological and health benefits of meditation aren't reached through sitting down and maintaining a certain composure or position, you need to focus on the seven chakras, remembering that each chakra has its own benefits to the body, there is a chakra that deals with the health situations of the stomach, another with the heart, another with the mind and so on. Meditation becomes the only possible way of promoting these self healing techniques.

How to Make Each Day a Downhill Stroll Instead of an Uphill Struggle

ResistanceBack in college, I came across a life-changing personal development concept. It made an immediate difference to my academic work – and it's still something that helps me every day.

That concept was the idea of resistance, set out in Mark Forster's book Get Everything Done and Still Have Time to Play. Resistance is that feeling you get when you think about a big project or a difficult task; you naturally want to put it off in favor of something easier.

Resistance crops up when:
  • You've got a book/article/newsletter to write
  • You need to completely rework your resume
  • You have to make a difficult phone call to a problem client
  • You know you should go for a jog … but it's raining outside
…and in pretty much any situation when you're facing something hard.

Why You Shouldn't Let Resistance Win
Giving in to resistance might feel tempting, but it's not a good idea.

In the short-term, it means that every day feels like an uphill struggle. You'll put off the hard, important tasks in favor of the easy, less important ones – and as they day goes by, you get lower and lower on energy as the tasks get harder and harder.

In the long-term, it means you won't meet your goals. Almost anything worth pursuing will involve at least a few moments of high resistance. If you want to write a novel, run a marathon, have a successful business … you can't do it if you keep letting resistance stop you.
So, what can you do to stay on top?

Use Resistance as a Signpost
Forster suggests that instead of seeing resistance as a signal to procrastinate, you should see it as a! signpos t to what you need to do first. If you really don't feel like making that difficult phone call, it's probably a good thing to begin your day with.

There are lots of reasons to complete the high-resistance tasks first:
  • Once they're done, they'll be off your mind.
  • You'll feel good about achieving something meaningful at the start of your day.
  • The rest of your day will look simpler and easier in comparison.
When you keep putting tasks off, they get harder and harder. Charlie Gilkey describes them as "frogs", explaining, "a frog project is just one of those projects that you really don't want to do but know you need to do." (3 Things to Do to Have a Productive and Fun Week.) By catching those "frogs" early, you prevent them growing big and ugly.

How to Beat Resistance – Right Now
What are you resisting today? I bet there's something on your to-do list that you've been putting off for a while. It could be something tiny, like tracking down and ordering a spare part for a kitchen appliance. It could be something huge, like starting your marathon training plan.

Today, spend ten minutes working on something that you've been resisting. You can do anything for ten minutes, however tough it might seem. (And if ten minutes sounds pointless – do it anyway; you might be surprised how much progress you can make.)

How to Beat Resistance – Tomorrow
Tomorrow (and every other day), take a good look at your to-do list in the morning. Instead of starting off with an easy or habitual task, like answering emails, start by spending 20 minutes on a high-resistance task, like that big report with a looming deadline.

Even just 20 minutes a day makes a difference … but there's also a good chance that, once you get going, you'll find that resistance magically me! lts away .
