A Matter Of Time - Spirituality Information

The past six weeks have been instrumental in teaching me patience. Normally, I'm a very patient person, but every once in a while an event raises its head and says, "Hold still, son, you have a lot to learn about patience and the wonderful things that could happen when you learn the secret of waiting."

Now, I must let you know that patience has not always been my strong point. In the days of my youth, I have been known to make quite a fuss when things did not move with the speed I wanted or expected.

Much as I have overcome most of the impulse to rant and rave when things don't get done as promised, I still have vestiges of hidden pockets of impatience somewhere deep within me.

My office runs through the proper use of computers and their associated systems. Sometime over the last several weeks, my main computer ceased functioning and the manufacturer promised to fix it. What started out as a simple matter evolved into an extremely complex situation.

Every day, I spoke with the computer company and they promised that the repair would be done within days. About two weeks into the frustration, I was told that the replacement part could not be found and so they would have to give me a brand new machine. Naturally, I was delighted that I would now get a replacement with all the bells and whistles.

The promise was that within a week, the new machine would be shipped. When a week came and went without the computer arriving, I found my frustration level rising to uncommon heights. Strange visions of writing a thousand letters to the manufacturer's corporate executives, or bashing the ailing computer with a baseball (or cricket) bat at high noon, with local and national press coverage crossed my mind.

I remembered, only too well, that an old, wise man had said that the last test of the master was overcoming impatience. But I was in no mood for masters or overcomings. The bumper sticker I saw on a car long ago described my deepest feelings. The sticker pictured a vulture! sitting on a branch of a dead tree, sweat pouring from his head. The caption read: "Patience, my ass, I want to kill somebody".

I thought of the bumper sticker and smiled. Since I had been waiting for over two weeks, one or two more days won't make much difference. But the urge to take drastic measures came back in a few days when no new computer arrived.

Many times, in a rush to get from here to there or to do this or that, we make ourselves prisoners of time. Being a prisoner of time could be as terrible as being a prisoner in a dungeon. We make ourselves prisoners of time when all we do is rush to work, or rush here and rush there. We miss so much in life by rushing.

Somehow, the world passes us by, during our rushing and we wake up five, ten, or twenty years later and wonder where all the time has gone. Our children have grown up, our old jobs no longer exist, some of our friends have gone to another dimension and yet, the sun still rises.

If we were to slow our pace a bit and flow with the river of life, perhaps the problem would work out fine anyway. I have discovered that it is counter productive to force things to happen. It is much better to create a climate where we allow the things we want to occur.

With that in mind, I decided to let go of my attachment to outcomes. I was not going to fume and fret if my new computer did not arrive as promised. After all, I had been using my backup machines for a few weeks without undue hardship. What difference would another week or two make, anyway?

With those thoughts, I went about doing my work. Then, a few days later, I received an email which said that my new computer was being shipped the next day. All the proper specifications for the computer were in the email. The computer would be a brand new machine with the exact specifications of the old one. I was pleased -- very, very pleased.

But the next day, when I checked the tracking information, I saw that the shipment was canceled. ARRGH!! The vision of the vulture on ! the bump er sticker returned with a vengeance, but I gently pushed it away. The computer will come when it comes I murmured, and I went on with other pressing matters. I didn't even bother to call the manufacturer. I had done all I could do. Anything more would have just made me more frustrated.

Yes, the world does speak to us in thunder tones of truth. Listen and learn and life becomes more peaceful and joyous. Ignore the voice and frustration takes over. And so it was that the next day, I checked the tracking information again, not with the thought of getting my computer quickly, but just out of curiosity.

Imagine my surprise when I saw that my computer was shipped, but instead of sending an exact duplicate of the broken model, the company shipped me their most advanced machine that had just been released to the market a few days earlier. I would have waited a few months, if necessary, for that model. It was much more advanced than the old model I should have received. When the machine arrived, I smiled and said, "Thank you", to no one in particular.

Perhaps, it was releasing the constraint of time from my consciousness that precipitated this outcome. The universe speaks to us in many ways. Many times, like impatient children, we want what we want and we want it now. But the universe has a way of saying, "I know what you want, my child, and I know that you want it now. But if you would wait just a little while longer, I will give you something much better than what you think you want."

Strive to become free from the hustle and bustle of daily living. Release yourself from being a prisoner of time. In doing so, you'll find that things have a magical way of working themselves out and that where there's a "good" there's a "better". And where there's a "better", there's a "best". The universe wants you to have the best. Give it an opportunity to bring your "better" or "best".

Can Taking Vitamin D & Calcium Help You Live Longer?

Older people who take vitamin D supplements along with calcium may live longer than others, according to a new review of previous studies.

The researchers looked at data regarding the vitamin D intake of more than 70,000 adults in their 60s and 70s. They found that people who took vitamin D, along with calcium supplements, were 9 percent less likely to die over a three-year period, compared with people who took neither supplement.

However, they found that taking vitamin D alone had no effect on mortality rates.

For every 151 people who took with daily vitamin D and calcium for three years, one life would be spared, according to the researchers' calculations.

The finding comes on the heels of several studies with conflicting results about the health benefits of vitamin D, including its possible effects on longevity. The new review is the largest of its kind, and included eight randomized controlled trials, said study leader Lars Rejnmark, of Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark. Such trials are considered the strongest type of scientific evidence.

The study confirms researchers' suspicions that vitamin D may increase longevity, said Dr. Philippe Autier of the International Prevention Research Institute, who was not involved in the review.

Study participants were generally older people with health conditions, and possibly had inadequate nutrition. Therefore, it's "not guaranteed that anyone in good health who takes these vitamins would increase life expectancy," Autier said.

In the review, the researchers found that 5.5 percent of the 35,412 people who didn't take vitamin D or calcium died during the study period, whereas 5.3 percent of the 35,116 people who took vitamin D died. 

Taking vitamin D, with or without calcium, had a significant effect on mortality rates only after three years; mortality rates were not significantly different among those taking the vitamin after one or two years, according to the study.

Vitamin D and calcium are important throughout life, because of their role in bone health, Rejnmark said. But he recommends people start paying particular attention to their intake "around menopause for women, and around the age of 50 for men."

While the review was based on studies of people who took supplements, Rejnmark said he does not believe the benefits would be any different for people who get the nutrients through food.

Autier noted that the greatest source of vitamin D is what the skin makes naturally when it is exposed to sunlight. People with darker skin tones, who are less able to produce vitamin D in response to sunlight, should consider supplements as a viable option, he said.

A total of 87 percent of the studies' participants were female, but Rejnmark said this had no bearing on the results, and vitamin D and calcium are equally beneficial to both sexes in terms of preserving longevity.

It is best to start small, giving yourself a chance to gain some confidence, along with more knowledge, when your few items begin growing. You can let go off your stress and achieve relaxation by gardening, which is one of the best reasons to do it. The modern world can be extremely stressful, and there's no better way to forget about your worries than to get busy in your garden. While all of your problems won't magically disappear, there's something about being in nature and the feel of the earth that makes you feel more centered. Frustrating problems and situations are focused on when we're stressed due to us being too much in our heads. We can focus all of our energy in a positive way thanks to gardening as it's a very practical and physical activity. Being in your garden can certainly be a refuge from the stresses of life, even if you can only be in it a few hours per week. The availability of certain types of produce throughout the year diminishes, which is another reason why growing a garden is a good idea. You can pick the type of garden you want to grow once you have decided to grow one. The appearance of your vegetables, and their taste, will far surpass the veggies grown and sold at your local market. Depending upon the type of climate that you have, if you are flexible, you will be rewarded. The climate where you will grow your garden will play a large role in regard to how well it does. The success is your experience with your garden indirectly links to the local climate in your area. If you're creative, you can grow just about anything no matter where you live, although you have to work a little harder if the plant or flower isn't native to your region. If you want to simply grow the flowers and vegetables that you love, s! imply be gin growing a garden and see what shows up.

Gardening, especially organic gardening has quite a few environmental benefits. To begin with, when you grow your own food you aren't contributing toward the use of fossil fuels used to transport things, like you would be when buying store bought food. A lot of the time, some of the most basic foods that you purchase in a store will have been shipped from hundreds, maybe even thousands of miles away. So, anytime that you grow something you are helping to save energy. Soil needs to be nourished so when you garden you benefit it. Compost can be made out of many different kitchen scraps and leftovers, allowing you to cut down on your household waste. The environment is impacted in a beneficial way thanks to the activity of gardening, so long as there aren't any harsh chemicals involved. There are many benefits to growing organic produce, only a few have been touched on in this article. Above all, gardening can bring a couple things that money cannot buy such as peace of mind and the benefits of health. Gardening is a fun thing to do - you should start one this week.

Problem Or Prespective - Spirituality Information

More often than I care to admit, I bump into a problem that shakes the very core of my being and challenges the heart of my belief system. At such times, I feel the world closing in around me and a tendency toward desperation begins to raise its ugly head. My first impulse is to fight back, to attack the attacker, to react by either running from or toward the problem.

But I do not follow my first impulse any longer. I now stand back and look at the problem for a while. I observe it from different points of view, all the while realizing that I am not the problem but that the problem is just an indication of a small adjustment I have to make in my thinking.

No problem is bigger and more powerful than we are. We are all children of the Infinite. The Universe is biased on our side. We have within us untapped strength and wisdom to deal with all challenges that come our way.

All problems have within them the seeds of their solution. We must learn to listen to the Silence, to hear the instructions from within and to follow the "still small voice." Life whispers to us all the time. It tells us to go this way or that, to take this road or the other. When we are frightened by what appears to be major problems, we block the "still, small voice" from our consciousness and only hear the howling winds and the thunder of the storm.

Find a quiet spot in the middle of the turbulence. Go to a quiet place within your soul and stay there for a short while. Do not rant and rave at the problem. Just go to this spot and let your fears be calmed, even for a moment. Don't listen to the call of the problem but, rather, listen for a few seconds to the song of your soul.

I often say that it's not what's happening around you that causes anxiety, but what you think about what's happening around you. Remove your thoughts from the problem for a short while. Don't try NOT to think about the problem. That doesn't work. Just remove your focus from the problem and think of something else. With a little! practic e, it becomes second nature.

Know that you're bigger and stronger than anything that seems to annoy you. Look away, for a short while, from your problem and know that its solution is coming to you. Trust the force that created you and placed you in this part of the universe. Trust the process that has sustained you until now. Let go of the problem. Remember that it is not the problem that's holding on to you, but that it's you who are holding on to it.

Let it go. Don't be like the man who was frantically rowing away from shore while his boat was firmly tied to the dock. If you want to get to the other side of the problem, you must cut the rope that's holding you to the dock.

Soon you'll begin to see signs that you're on your way to success. Don't stop what you're doing and look around all day for such signs. You WILL see them. Ideas will come to you. You'll have strange urges to take action by calling someone, writing a letter, sending an email. This is the "still, small voice" speaking to you.

Your problems are not more powerful than you are. You have the key to success. It is your birthright. No one can ever take it away from you. Be still and know who you are. Be calm and feel the countless tides of the centuries running through your mind. Know that you're unique and that there is not another human being on this earth that has the combination of talents and abilities you have. You are as valid as the sun and the stars.

As Commander Spock would say..."Live long and prosper."

Does Everyone Get Cataracts Eventually?

"The Healthy Geezer" answers questions about health and aging in his weekly column.

Question: I'm 67 years old. Should I expect to get cataracts eventually?

Answer: A cataract is a clouding of the lens, the clear part of the eye that helps focus images like the lens in a camera.

Most cataracts are related to aging. By age 80, more than half of all Americans either have a cataract or have had cataract surgery. There are other causes of cataracts such as diabetes, eye injury, radiation and surgery for other eye problems.

Cataracts tend to worsen gradually. The clear lens slowly changes to a yellowish/brownish color, adding a brownish tint to vision. If you have advanced lens discoloration, you may not be able to identify blues and purples.

The most common symptoms of a cataract are: blurred images, faded colors, glare, poor night vision, double vision, and frequent prescription changes in your eyeglasses or contact lenses. If you have any of these symptoms, see your doctor, because they can be signs of other eye problems.

If you are 60 or older, you should have a comprehensive dilated eye exam at least once every two years. In addition to cataract, your eye-care professional can check for signs of age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, and other vision disorders. Early treatment for many eye diseases may save your sight.

Here it is, the end of 2011 and the beginning of a New Year! It is such a special time of the year, that we are reminded to stay awake to the powerful energy of transition. 20 Small Actions to Create a Fit Environment

I've learned, in the last seven years of getting fitter each year (from a really bad starting point), that when it comes to getting in shape, your environment is everything.

Small things I've done to change my environment make my life set up for getting fitter, slowly, gradually, but surely.

Consider two scenarios:

1. Person A has a long work day, gets home, wants to just veg out on the couch watching TV to relax. Is hungry so goes to the kitchen and gets some convenience food (he's too tired to cook), gets some unhealthy snacks that are in the cupboard. Orders pizza later because it's easy and there's nothing else ready to eat besides some microwaveable stuff. After gorging on junk food, he's too tired to do anything else but watch TV. Goes to sleep, gets up, rushes off to work, where there's junk food all around anytime he gets hungry. Everyone else is in bad shape so he doesn't find any motivation to work out. This cycle keeps repeating.

2. Person B has a workout time blocked into his workday, and has a workout partner waiting for him each day, so he won't fail to do the workout. All his friends are relatively fit and often participate in various fitness challenges together. When they socialize, it often revolves around healthier foods. At home, he has no junk food, no convenience food, no snacks. No microwave. He has lots of healthy foods, and cooks them in big batches so that when he's hungry and tired, the food just needs to be warmed on the stove. He participates in online social networks that revolve around fitness. He has no TV.

Which person is more likely to get fit? The person who has his life set up so that he'll be likely to do the things to get fit.

The kicker, as you probably guessed, is that I am both Person A and Person B. Well, I was Person A and got overweight and unhealthy. Then I changed to Person B and got much healthier and fitter.

It was all a matter of creating the right environment. I'm happy to tell you that the changes aren't that hard to make, and can be done over time.

Small Actions

The following are some ideas you can use to set up an environment conducive to getting fit — I've used them all at various times:

  1. Get rid of the snacks. Don't keep them in your house or you'll be more likely to eat them.
  2. Don't buy convenience food. You're likely to eat this when you're too tired to cook.
  3. Instead, cook big batches of healthy food once a week. Have it in the fridge, ready to be heated up.
  4. Take healthy snacks to work.
  5. Create a healthy eating challenge with your coworkers.
  6. Join Fitocracy (invite code: zenhabits) and make friends there. Log your activities.
  7. Join a running club.
  8. Find a workout partner.
  9. Set up an appointment with your best friend to go walking or running every day.
  10. Get a coach.
  11. Set fitness challenges with your friends. Log them online, on Facebook or some other social site.
  12. Have a chinup bar in your doorway, and do a chinup every time you walk by.
  13. Join a sports team.
  14. Have nuts and fruit with you when you're on the go.
  15. Make it hard to turn on the TV (put it in the closet or something).
  16. Use a program like LeechBlock or Freedom to shut the Internet down at a certain time each day.
  17. Have healthy potlucks with friends or family.
  18. Publicly commit to posting body pics or measurements each week on your blog.
  19. Make a list of healthy restaurants, or healthy meals at other restaurants, for when you feel like eating out.
  20. Park farther away from things so you'll walk more.

Obviously not all of these will apply to everyone, and they're just a start of what can be done, to give you an idea.

Setting up a fit environment doesn't have to be hard, nor does it have to be overnight. But I challenge you to do one of these actions today, and see what happens when you start creating the right setup for a healthy life.

The Capacity For Discernment - Linking Spiritual Practice And Political Observation

There is a need for souls today to understand how to apply principles of spiritual awareness to every aspect of life including political perceptions and choices and the observation of the political arena in general. In this way, what has been a compartmentalized spiritual life can remove itself from the more protected corner of our awareness, to inform all areas of choice and decision that we make, from the most lofty to the most mundane.

Within this view, to be a spiritual being is to treat consciousness as the precious gift that it is in all its manifestations and to become aware of the need to hold this gift responsibly when we are asked as members of a family, as partners in a relationship, or as citizens of a nation, to make decisions. To be responsible for our consciousness allows us to draw conclusions that are more aligned with truth and light in all areas of our life, including the public and political arena.

The need to hold choice in a sacred way as it applies to these spheres involves us in a need to understand 'discernment' - what it is, how to cultivate it, what interferes with it, and how to stabilize it as a process within ourselves. To do otherwise, especially in relation to those things that affect us as members of a community or nation, is to allow ourselves to be swayed by the prevailing public view of something - a view whose shape is often defined by fear rather than by wisdom.

Our choices in the public or political arena are often influenced by what media would have us believe about events, their causes, the merits of persons in public office, and the need for actions of different kinds. To become discerning involves not only being aware of the influence of media as it shapes, informs, and cultivates public awareness, but also includes the understanding of how energies of darkness can play a role in this shaping through the effect that they have on our emotions. These energies are more potent today because we are living at a time of expanding light and ex! panding consciousness, and their role and intent is to prevent such expansion. Discernment involves knowing when something that is affirmed as true is really true, and when something that creates fear in us, is actually worthy of fear.

Often, the basis for fear is the incorrect belief that something that is offered as the 'only' way to view things is actually the 'only' way. This profession becomes even more disturbing when the 'only' way has grave consequences for life or is reprehensible in some way. Discernment, when present, conveys to us that there is another way, and that what appears to be a necessity, is often not. The capacity to foreclose the sense of choice is one of the primary tools of darkness, and it causes many within the public sphere - both elected officials and the public in general - to reduce their capacity for more creative solutions to problems out of a perceived sense of threat. This sense of threat reduces the feeling of choice and gives rise to a perception of need for immediate action.

Discernment involves us in an interactive process that joins reason with intuition. It relies on our capacity to join with our higher intuition to arrive at a closer approximation of truth than is possible through information alone. Sometimes this intuitive knowing comes easily. At other times, it is necessary to immerse ourselves more deeply in the practice of alignment with light so that a sense of truth can emerge from a different level of our consciousness.

The capacity for aligning with light is central to our ability to discern truth. For if darkness or motivations that are more ego-based color our mental or emotional perceptions, we will not be able to discern truth, but will be held in bondage to the public opinion that prevails at a given time or to our own fears. The capacity for discernment is the bridge between our spiritual life and our life in the public arena, and the practice of alignment allows us to live with a sense of truth on both sides of this bridge. Such a prac! tice all ows us to release our smaller self and ego and to join with the higher aspects of ourselves. It increases our ability to hold light in the world and our ability to hold truth for the benefit of ourselves and others. As we seek to commit ourselves to a unified life, a life that is sacred in all its aspects, it is essential to anchor ourselves within a practice that supports our capacity to hold light and to remain anchored within the wholeness of our being. Out of this anchoring, discernment can emerge, as well as a broader ability to live life fully and completely from our sacred humanity.

Let it go!

Most people, me included, are holding onto at least one thing way past its expiration date.

It could be a belief, perhaps that your hair is falling out and you are ugly and unlovable as a result; that you can't say what you really feel in an intimate relationship; or that you must lose ten pounds to be attractive. It could be a desire, such as wishing someone would treat you better, pushing to make a project be successful, yearning for a certain kind of partner, or wanting to cure an illness. It could be a feeling, like a fear, grudge, resentment, longtime grief, or sense of low worth. It could be a behavior, like such as jogging with aging knees, playing video games, or buying clothes. It could be something you insist others do, such as make their beds, drive a certain way when you're in the car, or meet particular goals at work.

Some of the things we're attached to are obviously problematic – and usually we know it, or could know it with a little reflection – such as self-critical thoughts, obsessions or compulsions, defensiveness about your issues, or drinking too much. These things are relatively straightforward to deal with, even though it could be difficult.

The hard things are the ones that make sense, that have good things about them, that would be good for you and likely others if they could work out – like longing for love from someone, or wishing more people would come to your store, or hoping that you're free of cancer – but, alas, are either not worth the price or it's sadly clear that you just can't make them happen.

You've watered the tree, fertilized it, protected it, even danced around it at midnight under a full moon . . . and it's still not bearing any fruit.

Now what do you do?

Sometimes you just have to let it go.

For starters, take a clear look at yourself. For example, I'm a churner, a plugger. It's tough for me to accept that my efforts are not producing the results I want. But to keep trying to grow corn in the Sahara – pick your own metaphor – when there's little or no pay-off either present or in sight means that you are stressing yourself and probably others for little gain, plus wasting time, attention, and other resources that could be better invested elsewhere.

Step back from your situation, from whatever it is that you're attached to, and try to hold it in a larger perspective. Get some distance from it, as if you're sitting comfortably on a sunny mountain looking down on a valley that contains this thing you've been holding onto. Exhale and relax and listen to your heart: What's it telling you about this attachment? Are the conditions truly present to have it come true? Is it worth its costs? Is it simply out of your hands, so that your own striving – however well-intended, skillful, and honorable – just can't make it so? You get to decide whether it's best to keep trying, or time to let it go. Be with these reflections – perhaps sitting quietly with a cup of tea, or in some place that is beautiful or sacred to you – and let their answers sink in.

You can help yourself let something go by making it concrete. For example, put a small stone or other object in your hand and imagine that it is the thing you've been attached to. Hold onto it hard; let your desires and thoughts about it flow through awareness; feel the costs related to it; and when you're ready, open your hand and drop it – and open as well to any sense of relief, freedom, ease, or insight. You could do a similar practice by writing a note about this attachment, and then tearing it up and letting its pieces fall away. Or you could talk with a trusted being – perhaps a friend or therapist, or in your own kind of prayer – and explore the attachment, communicate your intentions to move on, and let it go.

You might still have the wish that something work out, but you no longer feel driven, compelled, intense, fixed, caught up, identified, or strongly desirous about it. You have accepted the way it is. You have surrendered; in a healthy sense, you have given up. Make space for the disappointment or grieving that's natural when you let go of something that's been important for you. It's normal to feel sad about a loss. Then after a while, it occupies your mind less and less, and you move on to more fruitful things.

Let good things come into the space that's been opened up by whatever you've let go. These could be more time, freedom, energy, peace, creativity, or love. Of course, there are many things worth pursuing, including the next breath, but you can make wholesome efforts while simultaneously letting go of attachment to their results. Let yourself be surprised – both by what might replace what you've released, and by the power of letting go in general. As the great Thai Buddhist teacher, Ajahn Chah, once said:

If you let go a little, you will have a little happiness.
If you let go a lot, you will have a lot of happiness.
If you let go completely, you will be completely happy.

Students can Reduce Exam StressWhen studying for exams students are normally under a lot of pressure and commonly confonted with a huge amount of stress. Exam period is extremly stressful for more than many students and some of them are so stressed that they undeperfom, but this doesn't occur because the lack of their abilities but because they have to cope with high level of exam stress. They are under a pressure of possible failure, or unsuccess which results in underperformance.

Exam stress is result of many causes, student emotions combined with their thought and several other factors can create high levels of exam stress. There of the most common factors are Competition, Negative Thinking and Low Self Confidence. Nevertheless there are a lot of tools to deal with this stress.

CompetitionThis is important factor that can result in exam stress because during that period there is more competition amongst students. This might be because the results of exam will play important rule in acceptance for higher levels of education. Higher exam results can also ensure prolonging or getting new scholarship and other potential consequences of failing exam or achieving lower scores than other students can create exam stress.

Negative ThinkingBe positive and avoid negative thinking.nNegative taughts that occur during exams are important factor that causes exam stress. You shouldn't think how difficult is the exam, how long is the study literature , how hard it is to acquire all the neccessary knowledge or how failure will result in less prosperous future. Start thinging on the positive side of the situation and evaluate what are the advantages of passing the exam not dissadvantages of failure. Only by positive thinking and focus on our goals we can reduce the pressure of exam stress and in some cases even prevent it from evolving.

Lack of Self ConfidenceThis is probably one of the main factors that cause exam stress as well as other types of stress. It means that student dosen't perc! ive his skills and capabilities good enough to be able to pass the exam. Low Self Confidence comes from the subjective belief of person about who they are, this belief is usually result of fear that student has about the inability of passing the exam because the lack of knowledge. Therefore it is important for student to get higer self confidence and become imune to this important cause of exam stress.

First of all every individual has to work on self confidence, if you have high self confidence then you are less susceptible to stress. Remember the power comes from within you and when you will think that you are capable of passing the exam reduction of stress will occur.

Second you have to start thinking positive and eliminate the negative thoughts. Be focused on your goals and stop being concentrated only on problems and potential negative consequences of failing the exam.

The last proposition is to stop thinking how strong is the competition but try to focus on your self first. Start thinking how are you prepared for the examination and what are your skills. If your skills are good enough and you are prepared for examination the competition factor will be less important and examination stress at low levels.(examentraining)

Yoga and Back Pain Part 1

Introduction

Lower back pain injuries are associated with lifting, twisting, bending, reaching, pulling and pushing actions. In order to help prevent back pain injuries, people should: Engage in exercises that don't jolt or strain the back, maintain correct posture, lift objects properly. Low back pain injuries create tug-of-wars with opposing and attachments of bone, ligament, tendon, and muscle.

Doctors also report that men complain of exercise and sports-related back pain injuries more often than women and the two genders identify different activities as the source of their discomfort. This is important because with greater strength and flexibility, not only can current episodes of pain be reduced, but it also helps to prevent further bouts of back pain injuries.

Pain

Pain from an injury may be sudden and severe. Pain from the lower back can affect anywhere in the lower limb. Pain usually felt in lower back, and sometimes one sided. Pain in the back may occur in any region from the base of the skull to the hips. Nearly all adults suffer at least one back-pain episode during their lives. In fact, nurses rank second in back-pain injuries among all professions. Our areas of speciality include: - Back pain, Neck pain, headaches, sciatica, migraine, shoulder pain, foot pain, whiplash, sports injuries.

Conditions which have responded successfully under our care are the entire above plus more. Many patients have been able to avoid undergoing surgery or prolonged exposure to medication by attending yoga classes and regular practice.

Although we concentrate on back and neck pain relief, many people suffer both neck and lower back pain. Areas of back strain are common and we offer some suggestions for back pain relief from simple corrections in your daily activities, to posture modification and some devices that are easy to use and can really help.

Local areas of muscle strain are very prevalent among back pain sufferers, and is seen in up to 85% of chronic pa! in patie nts. The intensity of pain can change from day to day and is typically made worse and maintained in a chronic state by poor posture, repetitive motions, stress, lack of sleep and even nutritional imbalances.

Injury

Our body movements usually do not cause problems, but it's not surprising that symptoms develop from everyday wear and tear, overuse, or injury. Severe back injuries may result from car accidents, falls from significant heights, direct blows to the back or the top of the head, a high-energy fall onto the buttocks, or a penetrating injury such as a stab wound.

Stand on the Edge of Your Comfort Zone If You Want to Get Past It

The more you're willing to try new things, the more you'll evolve and grow as a person. As kids we embrace this fully. We chase every interest imaginable much to the irritation of our parents who pay for karate lessons, guitar lessons, art classes, basketball leagues and just about everything else that captures out interest for even the slightest of moments.

Of course we lose interest in some of those things and eventually we get told "just pick something and stick with it." For the most part this is good advice, until we get to adult life and stop picking things period because we've been busy "sticking with it" as far back as we can remember. But it's only when we chase those crazy wild eyed dreams of ours that we get out of our comfort zones, those dreams materialize, and we grow.

Stand on the Edge of Your Comfort Zone If You Want to Get Past It
A few years ago I made a somewhat unsuccessful attempt at learning how to snowboard. I went about 10 times in one season because one of my best friends was an avid skier. But I never grew to like it. I eventually wrote it off because I hate the cold and as I've always said "Indian people and cold are an unnatural combo." (not sure what happened in New Jersey). After nearly 3 years of surfing, I figured it was time to give it another go because I finally understood how to balance on a board. It didn't hurt that one of my surfing buddies said "it's like a wave that goes forever." That was all it took to get me back on the mountain.

The first two times I went I was fairly uncomfortable. Even though I learned how to ride a board properly, I hesitated. My body was really stiff on every run and I wouldn't allow myself to pick up very much speed. Despite attempting a few more cha! llenging runs, I didn't push too far past my comfort zone and found myself riding on my heel side on the steeper slopes. If you don't know anything about snowboarding, imagine what it would be like if you could only turn left when you walked. Your ability to move would be somewhat limited.

Standing on the Edge
The second to last time I went, I decided to push myself a bit. I knew that it might mean taking a fall here and there, but I figured it would be worth it if got me past my comfort zone. Somebody once told me that snowboarding was all about edge control and after a fresh snow fall it finally made sense to me. Standing on the edge of your comfort zone is about finding a balance between courage and stupidity.

  • If you went snowboarding for the first time and attempted to go bombing down a black diamond that would be stupid.
  • If you take your first surf lesson and paddle out at the Bonzai pipeline, you'll probably drown.
  • If you quit your day job without a penny in the bank, that's not risky. It's stupid.
It's all about your willingness to be slightly uncomfortable.

From Attachment to Extension
A few weeks ago, I went back to the mountains for what will unfortunately be final time this season thanks to lack of snow and something very odd happen. For the first time, I didn't feel like the snowboard was something that was attached to my foot. It just felt like an extension of it. In fact it felt completely natural to have a board underneath my feet. This time when I went down the blue, I allowed myself to pick up speed and carved the way you're supposed to when you ride a snowboard. I was comfortable in a way that I only am in the water. In that moment I realized that standing on the edge of my comfort zone had pushed me past it.

Everything that you are familiar with today wa! s once u nfamiliar territory. There was a time when you didn't know how to walk, talk or read. But you do all of those things effortlessly now. If you took a similar approach to everything else you learn in life, you'll be amazed at how quickly you progress.

Knee And Back Pain with the Help of Yoga Part 5

With gentle exercise the body will start to heal and recover, the more you put in the more you get out. It can be a very fine line where to draw between working too much or working too little. When you are exercising, it is ok to be 'agreeably uncomfortable'. This is where you decide to draw that line.

Be aware that the ego will kick in and tell you to do more and as a result you will feel pain. You will need to control the ego.

Resistance work can also be useful for issues with knee pain and other areas of the body. For instance with knees where key hole surgery is about to take place. This is what happened to me. A couple of months before my operation this is what I did with the help of my osteopath to a quick recovery.

For this you will need a pair of socks tied together with a pebble in each. The pebble will need to be about half a pound in weight.

While sat on a chair, wrap the socks which are tied together over the ankle of the affected knee. Then keeping your back straight on an exhalation begin to start to straighten the leg bringing it to the horizontal plane of the thigh. And breathing in on the way down. Try reversing this when your ready.

Just to start with, do a dozen or so up and down movements, to get the 'feel' of the exercise. Later you can start to refine this by taking the heel away from the body and the toes coming back to you with the knee pulled up 'gently'. Doing this a few times a day will prepare the knee and ligaments for surgery and towards a swift recovery.

Continue to do your yoga practice, it will pay you dividends. You will become stronger, more flexible, calmer with an overall wellness of being on all levels. The physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels will become heightened and you will become more aware of you body. (You also start to see changes in others as you become more 'tuned in'). When you start to work 'within' you can start to work on the 'outside'. Most do! it the other way round.

Your body is a vehicle getting you from A to B, so it makes sense to 'service' your body regularly to keep it in top shape.

What Happens While We Sleep: A Spiritual Perspective

The body is a miracle of organization and intelligence in which life is continually renewed and energy continually replenished so that the total organism can continue to live. Sleeping involves part of this renewal, and is a process through which the higher vibrations of light are permitted greater access to the physical body because the emotional and mental components of personality that are often limiting factors in the awake state are no longer present while one sleeps. Although dreaming produces mental and emotional content and therefore creates emotional states, the content of these is part of the sleep state itself and not a barrier to the energies that would restore, heal, and rejuvenate.

The quality of sleeping has a great deal to do with the amount of restoration that can take place. Deep sleep produces not only different brainwave patterns, but also permits a greater influx of light energy into the cells and tissues so that toxins can be removed and greater energy can be infused on a cellular level. This does not happen in any kind of conscious way. It happens because of the nature of the human body which has never truly been separated from the higher realms of light, despite one's waking experience. At night, this body rejoins its higher counterparts that are the non-physical energy bodies, and a more seamless union of different aspects of one's being takes place than can normally occur during daytime functioning.

The infusion of light is not the only thing that can occur during sleep, however. It is also possible for a soul to decide to continue their experiences with other realms while they sleep or to receive teachings from Beings with whom they have had an ongoing soul relationship. Such nighttime experiences are not unusual even if not recalled, and many people benefit during the daytime from learning acquired at night which is unknown to them, but which occurs to their conscious mind as insight or inspiration later on. Much of this insight has taken place during the sl! eep stat e, when access to one's own higher intelligence as well as to the help and teachings of others, can infuse the mind and the understanding and be held there till such time as the conscious mind can retrieve the information or inspiration.

For those who have sleeping difficulties, there is very often a preceding difficulty that has occurred in relation to connecting with the spiritual realms. Often, something has occurred during previous lifetimes which has created a greater separation between one's embodied self and the higher self and higher energy bodies that exist on other planes. Because of this preceding separation, during the night when one wants to be asleep, it is often difficult to do so because the seamless transmission of energy from one level of being to another cannot smoothly take place. Where this is the case, there may be longstanding problems with sleep and much wonderment about what the cause might be. Often, the cause is not physical but spiritual and energetic, that is, it is related to the perceived separation of physical life from spiritual life and the manifestation of that sense of separation through sleeplessness.

Much healing is possible at night, including healing of sleep disturbances as well. If there is a possibility for one in need of healing to relax, and instead of trying to sleep, rather to try to enter an intermediate 'twilight' zone of being partly asleep and partly awake, it is possible to rest in this state and to gain much of the nourishment from the upper realms that one would normally gain during deeper sleep. Healing of other kinds is also possible, for the relationship with the spiritual realms continues whether one perceives it to be so or not, indeed, whether one seeks it or not, and helpers of all kinds are available when called upon to help address problems, both emotional and physical, that may be troubling during the day.

The capacity to enter a deeper state of sleep is one that needs to be appreciated as part of the extraordinary complexi! ty and b eauty of the way the human body has been fashioned, for there is a self-maintaining function built into the body itself which renews itself, heals itself, and restores a sufficient amount of energy after it has been depleted so that the body can remain in a viable state for experiencing life within the physical realm for many years. As more light becomes present on earth and infuses the cellular structure of people's bodies, this capacity for renewal and sustenance will become much more available, and many of the ailments that are currently produced by insufficient energy or insufficient life-force will disappear in the presence of greater light.

My Amazon review of "The Mystery Experience"

Killing two birds with one stone (or rather, slicing two pieces of tofu with one knife, since I'm an animal-loving vegetarian), I'm going to talk about my overall impression of Tim Freke's The Mystery Experience in the form of an Amazon reader review.

I read a lot more Amazon reviews than I write. This will help make up for that imbalance. Usually I'm only drawn to submit a review on books that I liked a lot. Such is true with The Mystery Experience, which I've blogged about before here, here, here, and here.

But "liking" isn't the same as "agreeing with." I like to be challenged, to be drawn into a deeper examination of how I look upon life, to be encouraged to reconsider assumptions which may or may not be valid. 

Freke's book did all that. However, I can't agree with him about the mystery of existence. Here's why:

I bought "The Mystery of Existence" because, like TIm Freke, I have a longstanding love affair with an unfathomable, exotic, alluring, mysterious mistress: existence. Not the existence of this or that, particular things, but existence pure and simple. Is'ness. The raw fact that any "this or that" exists.

For about the first hundred pages of Freke's book, I felt like he and I were on almost exactly the same mystery-loving wavelength. "Yes!" I kept saying to myself, as I read passages like this:

"The mystery of life is so enormous it takes my breath away and leaves me speechless. It's not some riddle I will one day unravel, but real magic to be marvelled at. It's not a darkness my intellect can illuminate, but a dazzling radiance so splendid that my most brilliant ideas seem dull.

I may go about my daily life as if I know what's going on, but the truth is I really don't know what life is. Nobody does."

Absolutely. Again, what we're talking about here isn't the particulars of life, such as how the brain and body are fashioned, or how evolution has brought about us humans.

Rather, Freke is pointing to the unarguable fact that nobody knows why existence exists -- or even if "why?" makes any sense when the question pertains not to the existence of some particular thing, but to the famous query "Why is there something rather than nothing?"

There is nothing more mind-blowing than to ponder the astonishing mystery of "is." Personally, I suspect that the fascination we humans have with the philosophical, religious, and mystical questions surrounding why existence exists is a byproduct of our all-too-human cognitive abilities and brain processes.

A more advanced alien intelligence might look upon the question of "Why is there something rather than nothing?" with a resounding Huh? This is a meaningless question. The answer is obvious. Which, however, we wouldn't be able to understand. 

As shown by the quote above, at first Freke seems to agree that because nobody can know anything about the basic "is" of existence (in part, or in full, because any answer presumes a pre-existing "is," such as God), everything within existence, including life, is fully submerged in the all-pervading atmosphere of mystery.

Freke correctly says that we need to have our stories, but these don't penetrate the mystery. There are religious stories, scientific stories, philosophical stories, poetic stories. Each of us picks and chooses from these stories, elaborating and adding upon them in our own ways. Then we over-confidently say, "This is what life is all about."

Given how Freke started off his book, I figured that he would maintain a core position: the mystery of life and existence can be subjectively intuited by us humans, but never really known, understood, penetrated, or grasped. After all, Freke said: "I may go about my daily life as if I know what's going on, but the truth is I really don't know what life is. Nobody does."

Well, this isn't the stance in the latter part of the book. Nor in the Mystery Experience retreats that Freke puts on and talks about frequently, sometimes in a rather annoyingly infomercial sort of fashion. 

Because we're told that actually Tim Freke DOES know what life is all about. 

"As a person I am a form in the flow of time. But the deep self is outside of time. It is timeless being... I think most of us have this sense that our deep self is the same now as when we were much younger. I know I do... What I am is timeless awareness witnessing TIm's journey through time.

When I live lucidly I see that I am both mortal and immortal. The person I appear to be in time had a beginning and will come to an end. But the deep self isn't in time, just like a dreamer isn't in a dream. 

As a person, I'm a body that is born to die. But the deep self can't die because it was never born. My essential being is immortal, because being by it's very nature must always be." 

Freke believes that God, or timeless awareness, becomes conscious of itself through the consciousness of beings in time, like us humans. A Koranic hadith has Allah speaking somewhat similarly: "I am a hidden treasure who wanted to be known." This notion also is akin to HIndu teachings of atman and brahman, soul and God, part and whole.

To which I say, fine. But it was disappointing to find such a large dose of mystery-dissolving spiritual dogmatism in the last two-thirds or so of the book. Mystery takes a back seat to various exercises taught at Freke's workshops where people are shown how to get in touch with their "deep self." Finally, he says:

Our pilgrimage has led us to deep love, which is the sacred ground towards which we have been heading all along. When we're conscious of ourselves as an individual expression of the primal oneness, it's an experience of all-encompassing love, This is the heart of the mystery experience.

I can't agree. The heart of the mystery experience is to experience the mystery of life/existence (they're linked, because only conscious living beings can be aware of cosmic mystery). In his workshops, and in his book, Freke claims to know what this mystery consists of. Spoiler alert! He writes:

"My deep love affair is with God as the ground of being and Goddess as the appearances of being. The natural world is an objective expression of the unconscious oneness from which we have arisen. It is the unconscious foundation from which conscious bodies have evolved. When I see the numinous in nature, I see the mystery in the manifest."

OK. That's Freke's story. And it's an appealing story. I can understand why other people would resonate with it. To some extent, I do myself.

I just wish that Freke had stuck with his initial "nobody knows" theme, and emphasized that how he looks upon the mystery of life and existence is his personal way of relating to unfathomable mystery. Religions attract converts by claiming they -- and only they -- understand the ultimate nature of the cosmos. But no religion has any demonstrable evidence to back up its claim. 

And given the seeming impossibility of anyone knowing how, why, or what existence is all about, no sage, prophet, guru, or other person ever could penetrate the mystery. Freke can't either, notwithstanding the author's claim to be able to lead people to a "spiritual awakening."

All that said, and I've said a lot in this review, I still liked "The Mystery Experience" a lot, and can recommend it to lovers of existential mystery. Just be aware that the mystery will remain shrouded in darkness after you finish the book, even though Freke claims to have illuminated it.
