California Innovations Expands Recall of Freezer Gel

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with California Innovations Inc., of Toronto, Canada, announced a voluntary recall of about 880,000 (about 248,000 units associated with lunch boxes and 55,000 associated with food carriers were previously recalled in January 2012) Ice/Hot and Ice Gel Packs.

Hazard: If the packs become damaged, they can leak gel that could contain diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol, which can cause illness if ingested in large amounts.

Incidents/Injuries: There have been no new reports of incidents or injuries.

Description: The recalled products are Cryofreeze ice/hot packs and Arctic Zone ice packs. The packs are gel-filled plastic pouches with either transparent or opaque sealed wrappers. They are used to keep food hot or cold. The gel packs were sold separately and with a variety of lunch boxes, coolers and thermal carriers. Six gel pack styles are being recalled:

  • Cryofreeze ice/hot packs in small and large styles. Both have opaque blue wrappers with the words "Cryofreeze," "Ice Pack/Hot Pack," "Non-toxic" and "Reusable" printed on the front:
    • The small gel pack is 6 inches wide and 5.5 inches high
    • The large gel pack is 8.5 inches wide and 8 inches high
  • Cryofreeze Transparent Cell ice/hot packs in three styles. Each has a transparent wrapper with the words "Cryofreeze," "Ice Pack/Hot Pack," "Non-toxic" and "Reusable" printed on the front:
    • One 3-cell pack has three connected rectangular-shaped pouches of blue gel and is 7.85 inches wide and 5.5 inches high.
    • Another 3-cell pack has three connected square-shaped pouches of blue gel and is 7.6 inches wide and 3 inches high.
    • The 2-cell pack has two connected square-shaped pouches of blue gel and is 5 inches wide and 3 inches high.
  • Arctic Zone ice pack is 6.25 inches wide and 4 inches high and has an opaque blue wrapper. The Arctic Zone logo and a picture of an iceberg appear on the front of the wrapper. The words "ICE," "Personal Ice Pack" and "Non-Toxic Leak Proof Gel" are also printed on the front of the wrapper.

Sold at: Mass merchandise and warehouse stores, other retailers, distributors and on-line sellers nationwide between July 2007 and December 2008 in items that retailed between $ 5 and $ 28.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the gel packs and dispose of them according to federal, state and/or local regulations. It is recommended that consumers contact their local waste disposal authority for instructions. Consumers can contact California Innovations to receive a $ 6 cash refund for large (8.5-inch x 8-inch) Cryofreeze gel packs or a $ 5 cash refund for all other gel packs.

I have stopped talking about current events but yesterday's horrendous bomb blasts in mumbai made me write this. My heart bleeds for the families who lost their loved ones and those thousands of people who were injured in this inhuman act of terrorism... I can feel the pain... The moistness in those eyes... I get goosebumps when my son does not return on time from school. How about those families who had to wrap their loved ones in white cloth and bid them farewell from this world! Which parent would welcome those cruel hands of God which bought their dead children home! What if i told you that this tragic event and many others are the brainchild of your own mind? Would you accept it? You dare not reject it because i am going to prove that we all are a terrorist in the making....

Human beings by their very nature want either good or bad things to happen to them. Yes we all prefer good things to happen to us. But when we are not able to get all those things which we truly want we silently plot those crooked ideas, those mean acts, and sow the seeds for cowardly actions. At the backyard of your mind a devil works all day,all night planting those bombs of destruction which we are not conscious of. We carry those bombs of anger,pain,envy,greed, and destruction with us all day. We might not hatch ideas to blow trains and airplanes but everyday we water our stupid ideas, our mean and narrow thinking and cause many a damage and discord in every day life. We don't destroy life's but neither do we build one. Everyday every minute we want to put someone down. A billion people with a crooked mind whose desires are not fulfilled create the atmosphere for these terrorist acts. We have silently given permission to a terrorist mind. The only difference is you dont own that mind which bombed the trains and airplanes but you are as much a facilitator for the creation of that mind.

Human beings are nerds. They will never grow up. You have to understand that the invisible forces have more power, more com! mand tha n the visible ones. Your hands and eyes are mere toys at the mercy of the highest force within you. I was once a terrorist i have to admit since i had all these crooked qualities. I am not surprised when bad events happen in the world because perhaps that is what everyone wants... and if you think you want only good events can I request permission from you to inspect the backyard of your mind please........

Show me a fertile mind where good events can be launched my dear friend. There exists very few... You can change the world by starting the process of building a fertile mind... A billion fertile minds with honest intentions will force God to come and visit this earth. In truth God did not create the world. He became the world. As the "Upanishads" the great religious scripture says " He became knowledge and ignorance. He became truth and falsehood....

Wake up my dear friends and don't waste your time talking about these inhuman acts. Go and have another look at those seeds you have sown in your own backyard. You will find more cactus than roses....

I was once a terrorist..... No more now... Never again in the near future. I plant roses in my backyard so that twenty years later my dream of a beautiful garden is fulfilled....

What Feminists Really Think About Parenting

Feminists get a bad rap for being anti-family and anti-baby. But a new study finds that feminist women are actually more likely than non-feminist sorts to support intensive parenting styles.

Women who identify themselves as feminists show more support than non-feminists for the tenants of attachment parenting, the new research found. Attachment parenting is a time-intensive parenting style involving long-term breast-feeding, co-sleeping, frequent carrying of the baby and following the child's schedule instead of setting strict times for sleep and feeding.

(Though not defined in the study, broadly speaking, feminists are supporters of women's rights and gender equality.)

"Attachment parenting is this paradoxical mix where it has a lot of components that are appealing to feminists, but also has a thread to it that is not feminist and has some regressive components," said study researcher Miriam Liss, a psychologist at the University of Mary Washington in Virginia.

"Women are grappling with both sides of the issue," Liss told LiveScience

Feminist moms

Surveys of American undergraduates — a common and convenient population for psychologists to research — have shown that feminists are generally viewed to be career-oriented and man-hating. But stereotypes can be misleading: A study of feminist attitudes toward men published in the journal Psychology of Women Quarterly in 2009 found that feminists were actually less hostile toward men than non-feminists. Liss wanted to look at the perceptions versus the realities of feminist parenting. Certain "Earth-mother" components of attachment parenting are very attractive to feminists, Liss said. It's an anti-materialist, non-consumerist philosophy. But attachment parenting focuses on breast-feeding, which puts a larger time burden on the mother, and goals like frequently wearing your infant in a sling aren't easy to meet for working moms.

Liss and her colleague Mindy Erchull recruited women, both mothers and non-mothers, through feminist blogs, "mommy blogs" and Craigslist. The women self-identified as either feminist or non-feminist. The final study group included 147 feminist moms, 75 feminists without children, 143 non-feminist moms, and 66 non-feminists without children.

Each participant filled out an online survey with information on her age, race, education and other demographic factors as well as her own attitude toward four parenting issues: breast-feeding, co-sleeping (or sleeping in the same bed with your infant), frequent carrying of the baby and setting strict schedules for sleep and feeding. The first three methods are tenants of attachment parenting, while strict scheduling is frowned upon by attachment adherents.

The participants were then told to answer the same questions, but this time to answer from the perspective of a "typical feminist woman."

Mothering misconceptions

The answers turned up a disconnect between how feminists are viewed and what they believe. Non-feminist mothers saw themselves as more interested in breast-feeding and child-carrying and less interested in strict schedules than feminist moms, when in fact the opposite was true for each. Non-feminist non-mothers also saw themselves as more interested in breast-feeding than feminists, another misconception.

In fact, feminists supported breast-feeding, child-carrying and co-sleeping more than non-feminists, regardless of whether they had kids; and feminists were less supportive of strict schedules for infants compared with non-feminists. The results, reported June 3 in the journal Sex Roles, held when researchers controlled for age, education and socioeconomic status. [The Facts on Breast-Feeding (Infographic)]

The study was limited to heterosexual, mostly white and well-educated women, so it may not reflect all feminists or all demographics. But the findings are interesting, the researchers wrote, given public debate over whether attachment parenting is "feminist." This debate has played out in the New York Times, in a "Room for Debate" piece from May 2012 and in the Wall Street Journal, in a 2010 article by feminist novelist Erica Jong comparing time-intensive attachment parenting to a "prison for mothers." More  recently, Time magazine stirred the attachment parenting pot when it featured on its May 2012 cover a 26-year-old mom breast-feeding her 3-year-old son.

Liss said she can't speak to whether attachment parenting is a feminist act or a good way to parent. But the rise of attachment parenting and feminism may be tied, she said, with rising social status and expectations for achievement among women translating to increasing interested in finding the "best" way to parent.

"I think women today face an awful lot of pressure and a lot of people telling them, 'This is the way you ought to do it,'" Liss said. "There are a lot of right ways to raise your kids."

Terri Marie: I would be honored to do that, Vish. It's always a great pleasure to talk with my good friend, John. And John, I can't wait to ask you some of these questions. I've been saving questions up for a long time, and I have three pages. I know we're not going to get through them all today, but I wanted to at least give the listeners a taste of the incredible wisdom and insights that you have.

So I'd like to start with -- when did you first realize, John, that there was a spiritual side to life?

John Harricharan: It's interesting because that's a question that's asked of me always, in interviews, in talks, wherever -- "When did you realize there is a different side, a spiritual side, to life?" And my answer is this. It's another question. It's -- When did I realize that I needed air to breathe, to live, or I needed food?

I can't say when I had that realization. I have a feeling that that realization is deep within each and every one of us. And we do look at it consciously, as we grow older. So I would say I was born with this, just like I think that all almost 7 billions of us on earth are born with it. I just started looking at it at a much earlier age.

Terri Marie: Well, thank you, John. And you seem to have a great grasp of this and you can put it into such simple terms. How are people going to be able to use this Spiritual simplicity site to help their spiritual growth?

John Harricharan: One of my mottos was one of the things I have always wanted to do was to make things so simple that everybody or anybody, just anyone, at any level would be able to understand them. I am reminded of what Albert Einstein once said, which was "Everything should be made as simple as possible and not one bit simpler."

So the Spiritual simplicity site, I think, is going to be one of the greatest gifts that we could give here on earth that Vish is putting together with some of my input, because it will take all these complex things. Everything that people are talking about, ! if boili ng a crystal, facing the morning sun, and drinking the water and turning around three times, and all kinds of rituals and all kinds of teachings, self-help, self-development, talk about mantras and kundali rising, and what not -- things that people don't even have any idea exist and put them into what I call practical, simple methods of achieving harmony in life of balance and body mind spirit.

It's got to be useful. It's got to be simple. So that anyone could use it. I like what my late friend the great Sunbear used to say, "If your medicine doesn't grow corn, what good is it. " So if what we say in this site doesn't help people to become more prosperous if they are not, became healthier if they have lacked health and they become -- have the greatest best relationships on earth, if what we teach or what we share in this site, wouldn't do that than what use is it. So that's what the site is designed to do.

Elvis Presley Song May Reveal Clues to Genetic Disorder

Even the toughest of hearts might melt at the sound of Elvis Presley crooning his classic song, "Love Me Tender." Now a new study shows that when people with the genetic disorder Williams syndrome listen to that song or others, they experience changes in levels of the hormones associated with feelings of love.

The findings provide clues about the genes that are tied to people's emotions, the researchers say.

Researchers observed 21 people while they listened to music, and took blood samples to track levels of the hormones oxytocin and arginine vasopressin (AVP). The 13 participants with Williams syndrome — a genetic disorder that can bring developmental delays and mild mental retardation, along with an overly friendly and trusting personality — experienced a spike in both hormones when music played.

Individuals without the condition saw little change to their oxytocin and AVP levels while listening. 

One woman with Williams syndrome experienced significantly higher spikes in the hormones, compared with everyone else in the study; in the experiment, she listened to the Elvis tune.

The results could help researchers treat people who have this disorder and others that share some features with Williams syndrome, such as post-traumatic stress disorder and autism, said study researcher Julie Korenberg, of the University of Utah. The research provides insight to the relationship between genes and emotions, and links AVP levels to music for the first time, she said.

People with Williams syndrome have several genes missing from their seventh chromosome. They tend to be very friendly and have an affinity for music, but also are likely to have IQs as low as 60 and experience several health concerns, such as narrow blood vessels and high levels of calcium.

People with the condition often lack the ability to read social cues, despite their desire for friendship. Their disposition may be the result of high levels of oxytocin and AVP, according to the researchers.

At the start of the experiment, before any music was played, blood samples showed that people with Williams syndrome had three times the amount of oxytocin as people in the control group.

Results from the hormone tests showed that the people with Williams syndrome experienced marked increases in hormone levels while listening to music.

The research "points to surprising, entirely unsuspected deleted genes involved in regulation of these hormones and human sociability," Korenberg said. "It also suggests that the simple characterization of oxytocin as 'the love hormone' may be an overreach. The data paint a far more complicated picture."

Understanding the relationship between genes, hormones and emotions will be key in treating Williams syndrome, but may also have implications for treating disorders such as autism and anxiety, the researchers said.

The study was published June 12 in the journal PLoS One.

Realizing pure Mind for the first time is something like seeing an overcast sky at night open up just long enough to see the moon, then closing.  The closing part is very important.  It represents the force of our old habits.  In spite of the fact that we just had a glimpse into pure Mind, the power of our habits to run contrary to such an awakening still strongly persist. 

Even if we have had absolute Bodhicitta (bodhicittotpada), which is quite rare, we still have to perfect it, that is, overcome our contrary habits which only serve to cover it.  As strange as it sounds, we have to reach a state of perfection, or paramita, such that our all-too-familiar world no longer exists for us.  What replaces it is our original glimpse into pure Mind that now never subsides because our old habits are no longer operative—they can't cover the light, in other words.  We have prajñâ paramited them out of the way!  By continually focusing on pure Mind, again and again our habits, over time, gradually disappear.  What replaces them is the certainty of pure spirit that it is, indeed, the one true substance of all.

Yong He Gong Beijing China Travel Guide And Tips

Yong He Gong, or the Palace of Harmony and Peace, and widely known as the Lama Temple, is a best preserved Tibetan Buddhist temple in China. Located in An Ding Men, Dongcheng District, the Lama temple covers 66,400 square meters and is 480 meters long from north to south and 120 meters wide from east to west. The architecture, ornaments and size of the temple is comparable to the Forbidden City therefore it is recognized that it is a miniature royal palace and a Buddhist temple of the highest ranking in China. In fact the Lama Temple was originally associated with the royal family. It was first built as a residence for Prince Yinzhen, the fourth son of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty. Prince Yinzhen was known as the Yong Prince, so the palace was called Yong He Palace. After Prince Yong took the supreme power in 1725 (Emperor Yongzhen), he moved his residence to the Forbidden City and turned half of this old home into a temple for the Yellow Sect of Tibetan Buddhism.

Yong He Gong is the biggest Buddhist temple in Beijing and is supposed to be the temple which makes every wish come true. On a map written both in Chinese and English the visitors can admire the vastness of the temple and decide what they want to explore first. The main buildings of Yong He Gong are built around a central axis. There are eleven halls and in each of them are many culture relics, pictures of Tangka and Buddhist statues which momentarily are not allowed to be taken pictures of.

Admission fee:25 rmb for a person. 50% off for the students (need a student ID). The ticket is a CD.

I -- that really made it clear that we could be doing many-many other things with our souls that we're not aware of in our normal consciousness, and when we go through a different consciousness we can find that. Do you -- I know from your best selling "Morning has All Night Been Coming," but also especially your first one in the series, "When you can walk on water and take the boat." Right, that you talk about guides, can you talk about the role of guides in our life. Do we all have them? How do we connect with them? Tell me what your feelings are on that John?

John Harricharan: I -- if I were to be very -- to look at it from an empirical standpoint. I would have to say, that there is absolutely no reason why I should be existing in earth life today, and speaking with you, Vish or anybody else. I should have been gone a long time ago, because there were so many things that occurred that seemed dangerous, that could have ended my life.

There were so many decisions that were made seemingly for me by another part of me or some area that I couldn't understand that led me into certain things that made me who I'm today. After I look at all of these things, and I did quiet some studies on it, I understood that yes, there are angels, there are other beings, they are what some of us have called energy essence personalities. They could be others we have met in other times, and other places, alternate lifetimes. or they could be some that we have never met in the physical form. And they aren't there to serve us, but to help us just as we are here to help each other, to help one another get on and grow in life.

And so I do believe, there are invisible forces and beings that guide me and they aren't there like servants to serve me, but they are there as great friends and they do not interfere in my life except on real emergency situations.

They are there to help me if I ask them and re! quest th eir help. They cannot interfere in our freewill and our growth either. So we have to request this help and we do many times by going into the silence or through prayer or by getting really quiet and feeling the messages coming from them. And this way being impelled to do the things that would take us in the right directions, they may contact us in dreams. They might do it just through a little incident and I have so many of those, which I will share when we get into the Simplicity site where I will show people how to be aware of this science. How to contact? Or be in contact with the energy essence personalities that are there to help us. And who watch over us and who guide us. Many times we write books, people ask me if my books were channeled.

No, the only channel I deal with, are those on the television. My books were not channeled, but what occurred was I had the feeling that the books were writing me. Now, if you want to call that channeling, that's fine. I think we can call it anything we want, but what occurred was a part of me stepped aside, the part which was doubt and the part which would say no, this isn't possible, and the story started to write itself through me. Where did it come from? Well, we need a few days to discuss that.

The concept "dumbing down" can point to a variety of different things but the concept always involves a claim about the simplification of culture, education, and thought, a decline in creativity and innovation, a degradation of artistic, cultural, and intellectual standards, or the undermining of the very idea of a standard, and the trivialisation of cultural, artistic, and academic creations. The term can be seen as subjective since what is labelled as "dumbed down" often depends upon the values of individuals of specific groups. Pierre Bourdieu discusses how the practices of dominant groups in society are legitimised to the disadvantage of subordinate groups. However, there is also evidence that knowledge of areas outside that defined by popular culture has diminished progressively in the late twentieth century (see Dumbing Down link below).

The Seven Spiritual Law of Success - How You Create Your Own Karma

Your Karma is sometimes understood to mean that your fate in this life is predetermined by your previous actions. There's no use struggling against Karma - what will be, will be. The true meaning of Karma is very different. Karma is more like the physical law of Cause and Effect - your current actions cause your past, your present and your future. Understanding the latter, more optimistic point of view is essential to your spiritual development.

Karma is inextricably linked with our freedom of action as human beings. We are free in every moment to choose what we think, how we act, what we believe and what's important to us. The snag is that we only make a limited number of our choices consciously through rational, logical thought. Many of our choices are made unconsciously.

A simple example is the choice to jerk your hand away when you touch a hot kettle- this is a good choice to make because it protects us physically, and we make it instantaneously through the reflexes of our nervous system.

However as sophisticated beings, we have a subconscious mind that is capable of acquiring much more wide ranging and subtle conditioning and making decisions based on past conditioning. If we are exposed to some sort of stress for a period of time - maybe your parents went through a bitter divorce as a young child, you will acquire conditioning that leads to your reacting in predictable, habitual ways as an adult.

Similarly, you can make choices as to how you act in various situations. At first you will need to consciously choose how you act. You are likely to make the same choice time and time again until it becomes a reflex. For example you may choose to distrust someone, even though you find out later on that this was a mistake. If you've acquired the habit of distrusting them, it is very likely that you won't discover your mistake.

Both of these events are examples of your past conditioning your mind and affecting your future. One is largely out of your control, one is e! ntirely within your control.

How can I create my Own Karma

Even though Karma is one of the seven spiritual laws of success it can be changed, contrary to popular belief. Put it another way, even though your childhood conditioning is largely out of your control, you can choose to change it in later life. Similarly you can change any conditioning you have acquired later in your life.

More importantly, by being careful about your choices and realising that every choice you make will produce a future result, you can learn to make choices in the present that will lead to more desirable outcomes in the future.

The first step in making better choices is to become aware of the choices you are making at present - both the conscious choices that you apply your rational mind to and the subconscious choices that come from conditioning.

Develop the habit of watching yourself as you make these choices. This may take a little time if you are not aware of your choices today. Subconscious choices can be made very quickly, out of your conscious awareness, but they will leave tell tale signs like emotions and thoughts.

The second step is to learn to make better choices. One key to doing this is to learn to listen to your body as you make choices. Ask yourself, "will this choice be beneficial for me" and then listen for a response. You will know in your heart whether this is a good choice or not.

The law of Karma is one of the seven spiritual laws of success. One of the most common misconceptions about Karma is that it is your pre-ordained fate. Karma is more closely related to the physical law of Cause and Effect.

You create your Karma in the present through the choices that you make. You can influence your Karma by becoming aware of all the choices you make and the outcomes that you create. You then need to learn to make different choices, listening to your heart can help you to make choices that will lead to greater success.

What posture can cause neck and back pain while driving? If your arms are raised forward to reach the steering wheel and your tail bone is pinning its weight on the car seat, then you are in for a lot of troubles.

To relieve back pain, you can use exercise balls as your physical therapy tool. A simple exercise such as sitting on an exercise ball and bouncing gently on it for several times everyday is good for your lower back. It is because using an exercise ball allows flow of fluid into the lower spine, and this helps increase flexibility and reduces pain.

A sedentary lifestyle usually worsens lower back pain. So move your body! Use a yoga ball to perform many exercises that will benefit your lower back. Ask recommendations from your doctor or physical therapist on exercises that suit your specific needs.

Before you engage in a certain exercise or sport activity, always consult your doctor to ensure safety, more so if you are already suffering from pain or discomfort. There are many factors that cause back pain, but it is difficult to diagnose them. Despite that, exercises should be done to reduce back pain with great care and caution.

Tight hip muscles lead to a variety of problems, which include lower back pain, knee pain, arthritis in the lower spine joints, and shoulder pain. One way to bring back neutral alignment in the pelvis is to open up the hip flexor and rotator muscles, which reduces tension in the knees, shoulders, and lower back.

Vibrations in the car sear and road shock from potholes and railroad crossings can worsen the wobbling motion of the pelvis, thus causing more stress to the lower back. Saturated Fats in Diet May Trigger Gut Diseases

A diet high in saturated fat may trigger the gut inflammation associated with diseases such as colitis, a new study in mice suggests.

Diets in the Western world tend to be high in saturated fats, and the results may help explain why inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) such as colitis are on the rise in this region, the researchers say.

The study showed that a diet high in saturated fats derived from milk, but not a diet high in polyunsaturated fats, increased the rate of colitis in laboratory mice with a genetic mutation that made them susceptible to the condition.

"Our [study] suggests one possible mechanism by which these types of foods may be playing a role in the increasing incidence of inflammatory diseases," said study researcher Suzanne Devkota, who worked on the study while at the University of Chicago.

The prevalence of processed foods may be contributing to the rise in inflammatory bowel disease, said Devkota, who is now at Harvard Medical School in Boston. Saturated fats and trans fats can be used to make these foods more shelf-stable, more flavorful or easily transportable.

In fact, she said, the major source of unhealthy fats in the American diet may not be meat, but rather the saturated milk fats and trans fats added to foods such as candies and ice cream.

Inflammation and diet

To conduct the research, the authors used genetically altered laboratory mice as a model of human IBDs. These mice cannot produce an important anti-inflammatory molecule ordinarily found in the gut of mice and humans.

The mice were fed either a low-fat diet, a diet high in saturated fat, or a diet high in polyunsaturated fat.  In the high-fat diets, 37 percent of the total calories came from fat, similar to the typical Western diet, according to the researchers. 

Mice on the saturated fat diet were almost twice as likely to develop colitis over a six-month period as mice on the diet high in polyunsaturated fats (mainly, safflower oil). [Want to Get Healthy? Try Switching to 'Right' Fats]

The increase in colitis stemmed from an uncontrolled growth of a certain type of bacteria, according to the researchers. These bacteria grow quickly in environments where saturated fats are broken down, and this overgrowth results in an immune response that leads to inflammation and colitis.

"The [bacteria] only emerges under conditions in which it is provided with excess nutrients for its growth," Devkota said. The milk fats created the conditions in the gut that allowed the bacteria to "bloom."

Peter Higgins, a gastroenterologist and assistant professor at the University of Michigan School of Medicine, said "the study is provocative, and suggests the possibility of a chain of causation, linking genetics to diet to microbiota to IBD."

But Higgins, who was not involved in the study, also noted that only about 5 percent of rodent studies are later validated in humans.

"I think this is a great study to increase the awareness of eating healthier for the sake of keeping our gut microbiota healthy," said Dr. John Yung-Chong Kao, a gastroenterologist and assistant professor at the University of Michigan, who was not involved in the study.

Inflammatory Diseases Are On The Rise

Inflammatory bowel diseases are relatively new, and have been on the rise. As many as 1.4 million U.S. adults have an IBD. "The major cause for the increase in incidence is the change in environmental factors that include a Western diet," Devkota said.

But the increase is not unique to IBDs, said study leader Eugene Chang, of the University of Chicago.

"Other complex immune disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis, asthma and juvenile [Type 1] diabetes," also likely arise due to a combination of genetic susceptibility, an imbalance of microorganisms in our bodies, and changes in our environment — with environment likely playing the biggest role, Chang said.

Of course, diet is only one environmental factor; the rise in obesity and a sedentary lifestyle also likely contribute. "Using more antibacterial soap, and having less exposure to bacteria, parasites and pets in childhood" are all lifestyle changes likely linked to the rise of IBDs, Higgins said.

Inflammation in the gut is not always bad, Higgins said. "Mild, controlled inflammation in the gut is important for fighting off infection. Uncontrolled inflammation in the gut, as seen in IBD, is a very bad thing."

Due to their genetics, some people are more susceptible to certain types of inflammation induced by microorganisms. "This [explains] why not everyone on [Western] diets gets IBD, or other complex immune disorders," Chang said.

The study is published today (June 13) in the journal Nature.

You can determine what your strengths and weaknesses are by using a scientifically cognitive assessment and then train the right amount on the cognitive abilities that are important for you to improve your cognitive function. You may have a problem with your short-term memory or difficulty in solving arithmetic problems that you want to work on.

The mental training you undergo should be challenging for your mind. If it is not challenging, it will not be effective. It is the same as working out in the gym where you have to use the right weight at the right time n order to work for your muscles to train efficiently. Too little is not useful and too much will not really make you progress. For your mind it is similar. If the activities are too simple, your mind will not benefit from them. You need to constantly challenge your brain with the right level of difficulty if you want to improve it. To enhance your memory, you need to try and memorize various things. To become better in arithmetic you need to solve more difficult math problems! . The mo re you use a particular cognitive skill the more your brain cells are connected to that specific part of your brain. The existing connections will become reinforced if you challenge them sufficiently. Mind training is key for that.

Brain Training should include a variety of activities in order to make it useful and worthwhile. If you are presented with several tasks, it keeps your mental training interesting and fresh. This will require you to use your cognitive functions in different combinations. If you are trying to solve a math problem for exemple, you can try to use objects instead of numbers. If you love reading, you need to try a different genre. You need to find activities that keep your brain fresh by discovering new activities. By constantly repeating an activity, your brain only creates patterns and habits, which are not asking your mind to push itself adequately. This is the reason why you should always be looking to do new activities.

Real and scientifically brain training software are designed to enhance your brain health and overall vitality. People go to gyms to work their bodies but they usually ignore their minds. Women someday could protect themselves against sexually transmitted infections by using a gel that uses nanoparticles to deliver drugs to the vaginal walls, a new study in mice suggests.

Researchers used the gel to deliver an anti-herpes drug to the mice and found that the technology tripled the level of protection that the drug normally provides against a herpes infection.

It's possible the gel's protection could be made to be long-lasting, so it could be applied hours before sexual intercourse, according to the study, which appears today (June 13) in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

If the gel is found fit for human use, the composition of the gel makes it likely that a woman could use it discreetly, without her partner noticing it, the researchers added.

To see just how much the nanoparticle delivery system improved a drug's effectiveness, the researchers purposefully chose an anti-herpes medication that was not particularly effective, and a strain of herpes virus that was remarkably infectious.

"We could protect animals fairly well, with a wimpy drug, against a strong herpes infection," said study researcher Justin Hanes, director of the Center for Nanomedicine at the John Hopkins School of Medicine.

The research has yet to be tried in people, and rodent studies often don't hold up in humans. Under ideal circumstances, clinical trials of the gel could be possible within a year or two, Hanes said.

The trick to developing the gel was making the particles small enough and slick enough to get through the mucus that coats the inside of the vagina. Hanes likened the problem to a bug trying to fly through a spider web.

"There could be a bug that's small enough to fit through a spider web, but that doesn't mean it will get through without getting stuck," he said. But with small, "non-sticky" nanoparticles, the drug was evenly applied across nearly 100 percent of the vaginal surface — a feat given the vagina's complex, folding walls, Hanes said.

When they applied the anti-herpes drug to mice, the researchers found that the drug's effectiveness in preventing herpes increased from 16 percent without the nanoparticles, to 53 percent with the nanoparticles.

Those results are quite promising, said Chi Lee, a professor at the University of Missouri's Kansas City School of Pharmacy, who was not involved with the research.

The new technology could be used to administer a "microbicide agent against any type of sexually transmitted disease, including AIDS or HPV cancer," Lee said. The research could make a great impact on clinical practice, he added.

Hanes said this type of drug application could be particularly important for women because it could give them more control over their sexual health.

While condoms are certainly very effective at preventing sexually transmitted infections, some people don't like to use them, and in some cases, women are unable to get their partners to wear them.

 "Women in developing countries need a discreet method of protection," Hanes said.

Lee noted that modeling the human sexual experience with mice is difficult, so differences between mice and people, in terms of the gel's effectiveness, are likely to be seen when they research the possibility of human use.

The researchers said they believe the gel's mechanism will work the same way in humans.

The gel could have applications other than preventing sexually transmitted infections, the researchers said. The technology could be applied to penetrating mucus at other sites, such as the eyes, ears, nose, mouth or rectum, and could treat diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease or lung cancer, that develop in mucus-covered body surfaces.

Virus Can Kill Cancer Cells, Leave Healthy Cells Alone

A virus known to kill cancer cells can travel through the bloodstream of cancer patients to find and selectively attack tumors while avoiding attack itself, a new study finds.

The virus, called a reovirus, was found inside patients' tumor cells but not in their healthy tissues, the researchers said.

Before the study, it wasn't clear whether the virus could survive within the body to reach tumors. Most people are exposed to a strain of reovirus when they are young — it's a common gastrointestinal and respiratory virus that rarely produces symptoms — so a patient's immune system would be expected to destroy this virus before it had a chance to find the cancer.

The new study showed how the virus hides from the immune system — it travels inside white blood cells.

The findings suggest a cancer treatment based on the virus could be delivered intravenously. While the virus could be directly injected at the site of the tumor, such injections are more complicated to administer, and difficult to use for cancers deep in the body, such as liver and pancreatic cancer, the researchers said.

The study did not examine whether the virus could shrink tumors or prolong patients' lives, and so much more work is needed to see whether the virus could be used as a cancer treatment.

Hiding in blood

In the new study, Alan Arthur Melcher of the University of Leeds in England and colleagues injected reovirus into the bloodstreams of 10 patients who had colon cancer that had spread to the liver.

A week to a month after the injections, the patients underwent surgery to remove their liver tumors.

The researchers found reovirus RNA in the patients' blood plasma — the fluid that surrounds blood cells — and, as expected, the virus there had been inactivated by the patients' immune systems.

However, the researchers found "live" viruses, still capable of replicating, inside white blood cells.

In addition, samples taken during surgery showed active viruses in the liver tumor cells but not in normal liver tissue.

The researchers also found an association between the presence of the virus and degradation of tumor cells, but they cautioned they cannot be sure the viruses caused the tumor cell destruction.

Attack tumors with viruses

Reovirus is just one of several viruses being studied for their potential to kill cancer cells. So far, such "oncolytic virus" therapies have appeared safe, and some have advanced through early clinical trials.

The new study "is an important next step in advancing [oncolytic virus] therapies into cancer patients,"John Bell, a senior scientist at Ottawa Hospital Research Institute in Canada, wrote in an editorial accompanying the study. Bell was not involved in the study.

The study illustrates the limitations of mouse models, Bell added — previous studies in mice had suggested reoviruses could not survive in the blood.

The study and editorial are published today (June 13) in the journal Science Translational Medicine. Some of the study authors work for Oncolytics Biotech, a biotechnology company that manufactures a form reovirus for use in medicine. The company provided the virus for the study, but did not have a role in funding.

Rhythmic Breathing in Yoga and Pranayama

Rhythmic breathing has two variations:1. First, the inhalation takes exactly the same time as exhalation2. Second, the two take the same amount of time but there is a pause between inhalation and exhalation that is equal to half of the time each take.

For this type of breathing, it is important to concentrate mentally before becoming used to the rhythm.

Yoga students and teachers often time their breathing according to the rate of their heartbeats - these will differ from person to person. Its important to adapt the breathing to one's own desired rhythm and this must be done only after a moment of relaxation.

To check the heartbeats, the pulse must be taken while one counts from one to six.

The calculation must be repeated until the rhythm is firmly fixed in the mind.

This type of breathing can help achieve control of the nerves.

So how do we do Rhythmic breathing?

When performing the first variation of the breathing pattern, • Be seated cross-legged holding the chest, neck and head in a straight vertical line, with hands on knees (this can be done lying on the back also). • Inhale as in complete Yogic breathing counting six heartbeats.• Then slowly exhale through the nostrils, again counting to six.• Repeat this exercise several times.

For the second variation, the posture remains the same.• Once inhaled and counted from one to six, hold the breath from one to three.• Now exhale counting from one to six again.• Remain without breathing to a count of three. • Then start to inhale again.

Needless to mention, it is important to have proper guidance of a Yoga teacher to decide the number and duration of exercises.

Beginners should concentrate specifically in acquiring a Rhythmic breathing pattern without straining, to prolong the duration of inhalation and exhalation. Only after long practices will one be able to c! ount upt o sixteen beats instead of six!

Practicing this type of breathing will eventually enable communicate soothing Rhythmic vibrations across the whole body. In that, one will be able to feel that each inhalation is filled with calmness and each exhalation transmitting it to the tiniest fibers in the body - this happens once Rhythmic breathing becomes literally 'automatic'!

This wave of calmness needs to be absorbed consciously with each breath. This will make the whole body rhythmic and harmonious directing all the molecules in the body to tend to move in the same direction.

How does Rhythmic breathing help?

A totally exhausted body revives and the most tired frayed nerves calms down! A genuine rest, better even than that of sleep, can be experienced because it is acquired consciously. A relaxed facial expression will only soften the wrinkles and the features. A new life literally flows through the body as one sleeps better.

Rhythmic breathing brings health to mind, body and soul. It allows more oxygen into the body, relieving the ageing of muscles, helps re-establish the equilibrium of the nervous and neuro-vegetal systems. It also eliminates anxiety by acting on the sympathetic nerve and the thalamus (interior region of the brain).

Pranayama is one of the main exercises in the maintenance of the life-process and its perfect equilibrium - in that Rhythmic breathing helps a long way!
