Pinning down the definition of "secular Buddhism" is not easy. If you've ever done some eel fishing it is a bit like trying to grab hold of an eel (my cousin and I used to fish for eels in the San Francisco bay).  

First, it is important to get one definition of secular Buddhism out of the way.  It is not about teaching Buddhism in a secular setting.  If that were the case there would be no need for the adjective "secular" which is used by secular Buddhists to separate Buddhism, which is spiritual and religious, from Buddhism that is worldly.

The term 'secular' originally meant religious clergy who were not bound to the rules of a particular order; who were living in the world rather than in monastic seclusion.  Not quite an oxymoron, but there were, in fact, secular clergy. 

Turning to the formal notion of 'secularism', which is born in the 19th century, it opposes itself to anything spiritual or religious.  Secularism believes that the nature of man and his moral duty can be deduced from man's temporal life which, by implication, includes his biological life.  It is in some respects a kind of humanism except that it wants to exclude religion from society.  In this respect, secularism is not without its ideological underpinnings.  We get a taste of this from a quote by the National Secular Society founded by G.J. Holyoake in 1866 who coined the term "secularism": "We assert that supernaturalism is based upon ignorance and is the historic enemy of progress."

I believe it is in the context of Holyoake's idea of 'secularism' that we are to understand the thrust of secular Buddhism which certainly has a kinship with materialism and the belief in the omnipotence of the physical sciences.  Given this bent, secular Buddhism, when we examine the literary output of its popular advocates is engaged in the work of revising Buddhism to such an extent that the Buddha's message seems to be anti-religious and anti-spiritual.  To be sure, secular Buddhists run far away from Frederick Heiler's observation that Buddhism is the only really consistent form of mysticism.

The broader aim of secular Buddhist propaganda is to teach the moral teachings of the Buddha while, at the same time, leaving out his spiritual teachings when it comes to the subject of nirvana, for example.  If we can imagine a secular Buddhist cannon it would be quite small as compared with its present size.  All this assumes, in addition, that Asian and Indian Buddhists have been wrong ever since the Buddha died.  But thanks to Westerners like Stephen Batchelor and John Peacock, true Buddhism has been rediscovered which naturally is secular.

Yoga Meditation of the Himalayan tradition involves a broad range of practices and not only deals systematically with all levels, it is also holistic. These practices include: Meditation Regardless of what object is used, such as breath, a visualize image, an internal point of focus, or a religious symbol, meditation evolves in stages. * Gross objects. Yoga meditation may start with concentrating on identifiable objects or words. * Subtle objects. Second would be to shift to their non-objective form, such as light or sound which constructs the object * Bliss. Third would lead to the subtler, joy-producing essence or meaning of the object, or * I-ness. Moving still deeper into the being-ness or existence itself. Yoga meditation is systematic, moving inward from gross, to subtle, to subtler, and to subtle-most. Attention moves inward progressively, from the most ext! ernal to the very core of the being. ContemplationWhether it is a reflection on the universal picture or an aspiring verse from the sacred texts of one's religion, contemplation also evolves. One of the focuses of Contemplation in the Himalayan tradition is Mahavakyas or great Contemplations. The stages that contemplation evolves are: * Thought. Contemplation may start with a verbal thought or process. * Reflection. Second is to deepen to quiet reflection * Intuition. Later bring intuitive wisdom, and * Knowing. Then lead to a formless knowing. Like meditation, contemplation also moves inward, following the steps of moving inward from gross, to subtle, to subtler, and to subtle-most. As the more external, gross, verbal way recedes, it leads to the very core of our intuitive being. Prayer Although Prayers might be different for people of different cultures and religions, prayer also evolves through stages: * Repetition. Prayer may start by being repetitive and standardized in a traditional way * Relationship. Then shifting to a more verbal and spontaneous inner relationship * Feeling. Then developing to a deeper, non-verbal feeling of love and devotion and * Communion. Transforms into still deeper communion. Prayer also moves inward, progressively from the most external to the very core of our being. Prayers for strength, or for spiritual awakening, gradually come to completion. Mantra Whether the Mantra is of a particular religious significance, such as a short phrase or a spiritual language such as Sanskrit, or a seed syllable not of any particular religion or language, it also evolves through stages. Mantra usage deepens with practice: * Spoken. It may be spoken first externally or internally * Heard. Later heard or attended to internally * Feeling. Then later experienced as a syllable-less feeling, or * Pervasive awareness. Finally experiencing pervasive awareness that leads to its source. Mantra like the other practices of Meditation, Contemplation, and Prayer, also moves inward. The root meaning of Yoga Med! itation lies in the meaning of the word Yoga itself, which comes from "yuj" meaning to join, to bring together the aspects of yourself that were never divided in the first place. Although some principles of Yoga Meditation are contained within various religions, Yoga meditation is not a religion.

On Sam Harris and the Limits of Conversational Intolerance

It's interesting to see that my posts on Sam Harris's FB page got deleted. Lately I've been highly critical of Sam ever since he posted on his blog his support for racial/religious profiling. So aside from my own critique I've been posting articles on Sam's page with a common theme: the War on Terror is a never-ending pretense and Sam's BIGGEST BLIND SPOT is the National Security State.

Instead of getting good intellectual rebuttals from Sam (well, he never responds anyway) and his followers, all I got was some lame arguments full of logical fallacies which wreaks of ignorance from some of his diehard uncritical fans. How pathetic.

Granted, maybe I have posted too much too often, or maybe the articles I've posted were too hot to handle for Sam and his fan base. So either Sam (or whoever manages his FB page) deleted my posts, or some of his fans flagged my posts enough number of times that it got deleted. Either way it is proof positive that I'm no longer welcome to post there. Fine. I get the message. I will not waste my time there either. It looks like I've reached the limits of Sam's *conversational intolerance*. So I'll just say this: It was fun while it lasted. Good luck in that echo chamber of a rabbit hole. May the people who uncritically swim in that cesspool of hate and irrationality (masquerading as reason) eventually wake up.

But I will still be watching you, Sam, and I will continue to passionately and compassionately point out your intellectual blind spot if the situation calls for it. Good thing I have my own blog which cannot be censored by Sam or his intellectual groupies.

It is incredible how emotions can distort one's perception. Through my anguish it appeared to me that Earth life was made for suffering, that one had to eke out a meager living, do the best possible and then die. In moments of desperation, that is how we think. But then again, when all around us seems to go right,we perceive the world as a wonderful place in which to live,and feel blessed to be a part of creation. Choosing not to recall our own past problems,we fail to understand how others could suffer so terribly with theirs. We therefore proceed blindly without giving much thought to the suffering of others. I was feeling rather sorry for myself and,to me, this is always a sign of giving up. But it's not my nature to give up.

The next day, bright and early,I prepared to go to the hospital again. This time I took only Malika with me, leaving Jonathan at home in the care of visiting aunts. The day seemed no different from many others, but I was beginning to sense a deepening river of sadness within me. A drive that normally took an hour lasted only forty-five minutes, yet I wasn't conscious of having driven faster than usual. Only a few days earlier, I'd told a friend that I felt whatever was happening was certainly increasing in speed.

As soon as we entered the hospital room, Mardai looked at Malika and commented, "What a pretty dress you're wearing." By this time, her pain was extreme and her breathing was more difficult than ever. Nothing seemed to be helping her. I left for a short while to take Malika back home,and when I returned, the situation had become worse.

Sometimes we believe that medicine can always perform miracles; at other times we want to damn the entire medical profession for its inability to help. On this, which was to be my last visit with Mardai, her parents and I stepped out of the room to confer with the doctors.

Some of us met on the pages of When You Can Walk on Water, Take the Boat. Others of us may have met at lectures, seminars, airports, on telephones or in letters. Still others have met in areas beyond the more familiar, three-dimensional world. And yet, though our meeting may have been as brief as two ships passing in the night,or as long as a lifetime, we are drawn together by gifts that transcend time itself -- gifts such as truth, freedom, joy, peace, love and, most important, life itself.

And so, we meet again, or meet again for the first time, to unite once more in the glorious adventure of life. Humankind has advanced tremendously from the days when our ancestors hunted the mammoth and danced under a full moon to celebrate the "glories of the kill." If,perchance,there are other, more advanced civilizations watching us, they might be intrigued by our progress. They might even remember the times, when in a less enlightened state,they,too,traveled our path and they, too, brought down fire and brimstone upon one another, even as we did in times past.Perhaps,they would remember their struggles, and in remembering,would applaud our efforts and cheer us onward.

Yes, we have come a long way but we still have a long way to go. Not only are we moving toward a greater tolerance and understanding of one another but we are beginning to develop a greater reverence for all the other life forms with which we share the planet.

There appears to be a more enlightened consciousness on Earth, and it may well be that we have begun to understand what the great teachers of history have been attempting to explain to us for centuries -- that we are all children of the Infinite, that we are all on a journey home and that love is the most powerful force in the universe.

But sometimes, there is a high price to be paid for this growth and understanding-- tears in the night, fears and guilt lurking in dark corners and the constant pressures of everyday living. This is where we face our greatest batt! les -- r egretting the past and fearing the future. This is, also, where we can attain our greatest victories -- living in the present. We are never alone, even though all our senses may be testifying to this "fact," and crying out in pain; even though it appears that hope has died and all we held dear has been blown to the winds. There is a Presence and a Power, there is a purpose and a plan and if we keep on keeping on, we shall finally prevail.

It is not by accident that we meet here. Nothing is ever accidental. We have met to learn from each other again. Let us explore the infinite potential of our "creaturehood" and in the end we'll find that tragedy is but triumph turned inside out, that failure is only the other side of success and that all paths eventually lead up to the mountain top.

It is my privilege and joy to share with you, dear friend, portions of the story of our journey home. We are much alike, you and I, pilgrims in the search of the peace and joy that have always existed in the "secret place of the Most High" under the "Shadow of the Almighty."

Everyone has a hard time justifying astrology as a science due to the wide variations that exist within the world of humans. The definition of astrology is an ancient system of divination using the positions of the planets, moon, and stars. According to astrology, the celestial bodies exert specific energies that influence people and events. These influences may be determined by mapping positions in the sky at various times, but is still regarded today as a huge speculative issue due to the deep complexities and misunderstanding associating the field. What if the powers of Astrology had a deeper meaning, which stretched into the spiritual world and the ethereal planes of existence, including the very top-tier planes of power. Astrology is widely interpreted by every human on earth, but only a certain few have a defined ability to understand anything about it. A fair amount of people define astrology as "nonsense" and "childish" through lack of understanding. These are of course the usual human reactions to something we can't understand.How are the powers of astrology currently portrayed to the world? Currently, people manifest numbers and equations on planetary alignments, star locations, the apparent divine powers the sun has and also the moon. Their conclusion of what is the horoscope is usually the external scripture you will read. While largely amusing, holds little scientific merit. Astrology needs to be valued more than just this. It is a concept to be considered for all walks of life; it holds bearing to the time continuum of the past, present and future settings on earth. The human race has existed for a great deal of time now and has since evolved heavily in appearance, behaviour, intelligence, structure, strength, ability, perception and so much more. Some people consider the present to hold the "maximum amount of people time has ever seen" but again we can only speculate about such mysteries told of the highly advanced civilization that apparently walked earth (theosophists define it as! Atlanti s, the real society and cultural name is unheard) and the age old question of just how long has the world existed? The documented time that has existed shows the definitive lives of several billion people, all born under the same planetary rotation of the earth, which is 365 days or 52.177 weeks. This universal pre-set time fixture of 365 has dated and cycled existence accordingly throughout several millions of years, and in that time has been rotating humans. Currently the study of astrology and namely Astrologists are people who predict the future by the positions of the planets and sun and moon. They do this based on their own interpretation and creativity, which can be as inventive as the person likes.Astrology to some is just a shallow fabric of life to help them feel better by reading what is known as "Powerful wording" written by novelists and professional writers. It is widely under-appreciated the similarities that hold true in the definition of each human's star sign. In that I mean for every 500 people born in August for example, on the exact same date, hold a very strong connection to each other in terms of their memories, philosophies, beliefs and behaviour. All things which astrology boasts, these are relations not understood by many. It is in that key of understanding and spiritual-thinking that makes people wonder how many humans were born at the exact same moment in time you were, only altering the year. If we were to find that spiritual connection, just how much like that person would we be? If you were to consider sun-sign astrology ONLY, this would be fallible due to the alteration of the physical plane of life, which is earth's galaxy. If you were to consider all aspects and relations, the planes of existence, powers to be and the akashic records, these spiritual points all connect to the "collective consciousness" Carl Jung was referring to. The collective consciousness is only Jung's interpretation and hence a vague reference to the gateways he portrayed. Jung attempted to s! how the connections between dreams, anthropology and the dualism of life to astrology. His work always showed these links but the people could never grasp the concept of them, given a large amount of humans will only work on what they perceive to be fact-based evidence. The creation of humans defined by scientists is a great example of what can be construed as myth or fact. Physical items "prove" evolution to be the definitive, such as bones and relics discovered at different points in time. Nature has created man with intelligence; certainly he is far more intelligent than any other life form in the universe. Since the nature has empowered man with highest level of intelligence, it did not give great physical strength or special anatomical features to man to combat and win great battles in nature. Perhaps, nature would have thought that intelligence is far superior over mere physical strength. But unfortunately, the ingenuity of the man has made him to feel more weak than strong.

The intelligence, man has used only to know, understand and compare him with others in nature to substantiate how weak he is. If we were to believe that there exist two important power centers in man such as 'mind' and 'heart', it interesting to know what mind and heart are searching for or how they functions. Wherever man goes, his mind follow him and help him to search and ensure what he/she has is safe and secured. Mind always operate like a security guard or a police man.

Interestingly, the heart on the other hand always searches things that man does not have with him. Always heart list out things that are available in nature in abundance but unfortunately man does not have.

The list of heart may go like tranquility and peace, nature has but man does not have, beauty and abundance nature has but man has only contradictions and confusions in abundance, happiness and joy the nature has but only sorrowful thoughts and melancholy man has, richness and vibrancy nature has but only poverty and insecurity dominate in mans life……. etc.

The mind on the other side constantly compel the man to safe guard his property and wealth, his position and respect, his family and clan etc. Sadly, man is pulled by his two very powerful horses which are apparently doing the same job of pulling him forward. Both are searching and ensuring something. Mind search what man has in the physical sense and ensure that he has not lost them while the heart search what man does not have in the emotional sense! and ens ures the fact that he does not have them.

Man often gets frustrated only due to the jigsaw created by the mind and the heart. Each of the horses pushes the man to two different directions and that is why man is always directionless. Despite having all the richness, man still feels poor at heart because his/her heart never sees what she/he has. The mind also never communicates to the heart and vice versa.

Man in most instances behaves like a tonga horse cart rider and when he beats the both or either of the one horse, the consequences are easy to imagine. If he beat or kicks the heart, it pushes him into to the bottomless pit of grief and if he beats the mind, then he become more materialistic hunter always goes after money and pleasure.

How to deal the paradoxical situation? Should he control the mind or heart the most? The only thing man has to do is to create a unity between heart and the mind. Learn to make them communicate with each other. Learn the art of reversing the responsibility of both.

When mind start searching what man does not have and heart start listing what are the wonderful things man has, the joy and harmony would flow out of him. I was becoming tired of reacting to circumstances instead of responding to them,a subtle but important distinction. React and you are a slave to events and circumstances. Respond and you are the master.

It wasn't too long before the opportunity arrived. As a rule, it's not the big tests that brings us the most aggravation. It is the accumulation of many small annoyances added together that, most times, make life miserable. This day, I must have issued an order for all the petty irritations of the universe to report to me for duty. It must have been done at a subconscious level, because I felt it would take a certified idiot to consciously desire such a thing.

In any event, I needed to go to the supermarket. Even with the aid of lists and proper planning I found myself visiting the supermarket much more often than necessary. As I pulled into the parking lot, an old pick-up truck

raced ahead and claimed the one vacant spot that I'd staked out as mine. Nevertheless, I settled for another spot and parked. I'm going to share with you a 40 minute exercise that has completely changed the way I think, feel and interact with my outer world. Many people still believe that they live in one world. This is not the case. You live in two worlds simultaneously. You have the power to create your outer world, but first you have to create your inner world.

I promise anybody who decides to take this exercise on board and persist with the instructions provided will undoubtedly get results. If you don't think you can manage 40 minutes a day for a period of 3 months then this is not for you. Persistence, repetition and desire are of ultimate importance. This is a difficult exercise to consistently do every day but it is worth the effort. You will gain benefits within a very short time when you start this exercise but in order for it to fully integrate/imprint into your sub-conscious mind it will take the 3 months.

Here are three ways in which you can create your inner world…

• Meditation is a fantastic discipline that can make you happier, healthier and calmer.• Visualization is a powerful technique using your imagination to create an outcome in your mind that hasn't happened yet.• Affirmations are carefully constructed statements which are repeated over and over again until the sub-conscious mind takes hold and accepts as true.

Individually the above three techniques are widely acknowledged as being very effective when practised daily. For eleven months now I have been combining the three techniques into a forty minute daily exercise and have gotten amazing results. Apart from the meditation the other techniques are tailor made for your needs…I'll explain this as we go.

Okay, first things first…

…Find a quiet place where you will not be disturbed for forty minutes.…Bring a timer that you can set for an interval of twenty minutes.…Take of your shoes and loosen any tight clothing.…Sit in a comfortable position where you will be able to remain still for forty minu! tes.

Now the exercise…

1. Meditation … 20 minutes…if you have a timer then set it to remind you when 20 minutes have passed.

• Close your eyes, take a few slow deep breaths and let yourself relax.• Become aware of your environment by listening to the sounds around you. (do this for a minute or so)• Bring your attention to the sensations within your body and after a few moments , rest your attention on your breath. (there's no rush, take your time)• Pay close attention to your breath as it passes in and out of your body. (your mind will wander, as soon as you recognise you are thinking, calmly release that thought and bring your attention back to the breath).• Try not to force the breath, let it be as natural as it can be. The idea is to be as naturally relaxed without any judgments on whether you are doing right. (there's no wrong way to do this exercise, don't worry when you notice your mind wandering all the time, this is natural, just calmly keep bringing your attention back to your breath without any judgements.)

Meditation is a discipline and takes practice but the practice is not for you to get better, it is for you to feel more comfortable when doing it.

2. Visualization…10 minute…visualization is a proven technique used by most athletes today.

• After you finish your 20 minute meditation practice you should go straight into the visualizations. Your mind will be completely relaxed at this stage and so it is far easier for your mind to accept and work with the images you create.• The aim here is to make mental images in your mind of what you want to see happen in your outer world. if you have a specific goal you want to achieve then you visualize yourself after achieving that goal. If you want to be more confident or happy then you visualize yourself in a situation where you are confident or happy.• It is important to always visualize yourself as if you had already achieved your desire. (the brain cannot tell the difference between what's real o! r what i s imagined and if practiced daily you imprint the image of your desire as a fact into your sub-conscious mind, in turn your mind will accept the image as true and seek out the corresponding result in the outside world.• It is also important to feel the feelings you would expect to feel if you had achieved your desire. Try use all your senses in the imagined scenario for greater benefit. (don't worry if at first you can't create a clear image of your desire, the more you practice this method, the better you will become at it.)

3. Affirmations…10 minutes…repeating positive statements will, over time, imprint into your sub-conscious mind.

• After you have finished your visualization exercise the next thing is to repeat positive statements related to your goals/desires.• You can make up whatever positive statements you like but the idea is to reinforce into your sub-conscious of your desire to achieve a certain goal or desire.• If your goal is to be a successful salesperson then your affirmations will be related to that discipline. Example: I am a very influential person with exceptional persuasive skills, or/and, I am extremely confident in my ability to sell anything to anyone.• you have 10 minutes with this discipline so play around with it a bit. Repeat your statements over and over again for 5 minutes and spend the next 5 minutes just thinking about those statements. It's important to put some feeling into the affirmations you are repeating, really believe they are true and I guarantee after a couple of months you will believe it.

remember…you will gain benefits very shortly when you begin these exercises but in order for your sub-conscious mind to fully take hold of the information it will take 3 months of consistent work.

Yoga Maintenance to Lower Stress Levels

refuge was divine…over some time

I was side swiped last week. Not in a physical manner as you might imagine.

I was baited into a conversation by someone I believed was a friend. Without any warning of the accusations that would be dumped on me I felt very threatened and unsafe.

Customarily I would have become physically numb, emotionally overwhelmed and energetically launched like a shiny pinball in a machine.

However as I would later reflect this was the point that the success of my 'work' revealed itself…I paused and allowed myself to become sensitive, feel, listen and breathe. I remained steady and spoke with my most authentic voice and walked away feeling like I had quite eloquently survived a battle. Little did I know that this interaction was just the beginning of more internal work to be done.

Day one I felt attacked and guiltyDay two I felt shell shocked and powerlessDay three I was enragedDay four I felt overwhelmedDay five I felt irritatedDay six I was absolutely exhaustedDay seven I nurtured optimism

As the snow fell in Connecticut during these seven days I knew the brazen conversation was an awakening. Up until now my life had been spent being dumped on by others and my critical self. The snow piled up and I turned my attention to the layers of 'compost' inside me.

Relationships evolve and I think many of us have experienced noticeable shifts with people who may not like the changes that yoga has brought into your lives. This can create friction in relationships and be frightening to people that have known us to be certain way(s).

The work we do on the mat prepares us in a variety of ways for the churning on life. The work I am focusing on right now is my new armor for the battlefield of life. My old armor felt very heavy and eclipsed my passions I feel more confident in my new armor, it feels weightless. I feel naked yet totally protected.

Through our practice of yoga we become! stronge r to handle relationships and most importantly the relationship with ourselves. It's vital that we remember that nothing is more important than us feeling wonderful while we live as fully as we can.

For added support I made contact with my trusted advisers; my dear friends and my loving family. I made time to visit with the healers that I've benefited from over the years. I received body work, I did my "maintenance yoga" and I meditated. I was totally determined, "I am done giving up my power that allows me to feel small and unworthy".

Making a comfortable seat I turn my focus on my easy natural breath as I sit. I chant and pause. When an emotion sparks inside me I direct my full attention to it stating, "dear one I am here for you, I am here for you". I repeat this over and over until I am soothed.

I need to connect to the earth in a serious way, to stand as steadily as possible and fiercely with love for my life remembering and envisioning my dreams.

I went deep and felt what was at my core. As much as my old habits would have me running for the hills I stayed to be the witness to the epic immersion. I needed the great pause that yoga has taught me and challenged me to hone. I had to not react with emotions but rather deep wisdom. Understanding that there are ways to respond that might temporarily feel satisfying however I know using my authentic tools is best overall.

Yoga calls us out of some dark corners inside ourselves drawing us towards the brilliance of our hearts to come out and play. We pause and look around at the panoramic view and remind each other that now more than ever the world needs us to shine brightly with our passions. Turning inward we find inspiration from our breath using yoga poses to bring intelligence to the surface and with great discernment w! e stand tall using our gifts to bring joy into the world.

We dream to be living and sharing our gifts with the world and together we'll live our dreams.
