I'm a control freak. I used to admit that only in hushed tones, as if it were something to be ashamed of. And the thought of Zen Habits' No Goals philosophy used to fill me with a vague but pervasive dread.

So when I interviewed Leo for Blog Wise, an ebook on productivity, I wanted to know more. When I asked him what a typical day without goals looked like, he said:

"It's highly variable. That's one thing about having a little less structure than I used to have, which is that when it's unstructured, it's really a huge, open container that you can do anything you want with. I mean, you can fill it with anything."

Yet Leo told me that he feels more in control of his life than ever before.

At first glance, this seems paradoxical. Don't we cede control by abandoning our goals?

To have control, we're taught, we need to know what we're doing, and goals and plans are the key mechanisms we use to gain that knowledge. If we have a goal, we can make a plan to achieve it, and check our progress to make sure we're on track.

That's how we know what we're doing. That, says conventional wisdom, is control.

This concept is so ingrained in many of us that when we feel something's "out of control", we turn to planning to get it "under control". We pull out our calendar, break the challenge into steps, schedule them, and "commit" ourselves to completing each one. We may even feel better at the end of this planning process—I can't be the only one who's ever found solace in the making of plans.

But is that control? If so, how's Leo achieving control without goals or plans?

Behind the control paradox

In line with these philosophies, we tend to think that control reduces freedom. According to this concept, control entails close scrutiny, a tight structure, and monitored progress.

But it's not control that creates these structures. It's the goals we set, and the plans we make.

If we have a plan, we can't enjoy true freedom of choice: the plan's structure dictates what we need to do. The threat of scrutiny ensures we don't stray from that focus, even if something more interesting comes along. And the progress yardstick gives us a very real opportunity to disappoint—and to fail.

Many of us use a smokescreen of goals and plans as a means to avoid the responsibility of true control. We choose a goal, set up a plan, and slip into operational autopilot. We cruise from day to day along the ever-deepening rut that, while it restricts our freedom even further, requires no conscious thought, nor much energy to maintain.

We think we're in control, and convince ourselves that we needed to sacrifice freedom to get it.

The truth is that if we let go of these ideas, then, like Leo, we can take control back.

Control freak? Freedom freak

Control and freedom aren't mutually exclusive. If we let them, they can act as entirely complementary notions.

Control isn't allowing outside forces, like a goal or plan we (or someone else) created weeks or months ago, to shape our actions.

Control is taking full responsibility for how we spend our time, right here, today. And in that control lies freedom: we get to choose.

What would you do if you had complete control—the freedom to do whatever you wanted today?

My answer to this question was, "live somewhere beautiful, have more free time, and work on cooler stuff."

So I did. I chose to leave the city and live in the country; to leave my job, switch disciplines and freelance; and now, to go on a "working holiday" to visit friends abroad. These days, I get to make a lot of choices: what I do with my time, when, with whom, and where. I have control over the way work fits into my life, and its importance relative to the other things I like to do. The choices I made have given me the chance to enjoy that "huge, open container" that Leo talked about in our interview.

At first, that freedom was daunting, but it didn't take long to get used to. The more control I took, the more freedom I gained, and the more choices I wanted to have responsibility for making.

And therein lies the key: to break free of the rut, we have to want to take responsibility for our freedom.

It can heal you, help you to transcend the physical world and to make yourself feel the heights of elation or the depths of despair. If you could learn to control your subconscious mind power, you can do things you've only imagined.

Scientists have been looking into this for quite some time. A great example of this is the Placebo Effect.

When clinical trials are performed to test new medications, there are always two groups of participants in the study - people given a placebo and people given the drug itself.

The odd thing that was first documented in the 1870s, and corroborated throughout the 20th century is that some percentage of the control group will have the same effects as the people getting the actual medicine; this percentage can be as high as 30% ore more; and it's something that drug studies have to correct for.

Scientists then look into the results from each group. It's interesting to see how people are able to get better from taking the placebo.

Since both groups believe that they're receiving the drug, their minds influence their bodies, making them feel the effects which they know the medication can produce.

This is exactly why there are doctors who prefer not to tell patients about any side effects that a new medication might have.

This is because they know the patient is likelier to make the association between the pill and the side effect if they know what might happen.

You can access your subconscious mind power by using this power of suggestion.

After all, if it works in clinical trials, why ca! n't it w ork for you? This can be an effective means of communicating with your subconscious and unlocking its true potential.

Or, you may want to use visualization to alter the way you see things. Visualization is a simple technique that really, truly works. You can do this a couple of ways. Try this; close your eyes and visualize what you want. See it as though you're looking at it from your perspective, with it right in front of you.

Something else which works for many whether on its own or along with visualization techniques is to find a picture of their goal - or better still, a picture of themselves with their objective. This image helps you to focus your subconscious mind power on achieving your objectives. Say that you want a certain car. Have a picture taken of yourself with this car and put it up somewhere that you'll see it every day.

Maybe you place one picture at work, one at home, and one in the car. In doing this you will allow the subconscious mind to take shape and understand what you want next. In time you will be able to make your vision a reality.

While this practice has been known in self help books for centuries, it's only recently that an attempt at a scientific basis has been built for this.

At subatomic levels matter ceases to be 'solid' and is shown to be pure energy. Quantum physics has shown beyond doubt that this energy can be manipulated by the mind.

However, quantum physics is also an information restricted space; the mere act of observing an event changes the event by taking (or adding) information to it.

Quantum physics shows us that matter only exists if there is someone around to view it!

You mind does not react and respond to reality. It is your mind that has actually created that reality.

Some religious traditions have long accepted the idea that it is our minds which actually control our world and science is starting to make connections which could eventually explain exactly how this phenomenon works. No matter what religi! ous beli efs, if any that you hold yourself, you probably do believe in physics.

You have the ability to reshape your life by focusing on positive aspects of it.

His findings show that 65% of drivers in the study reported having low back trouble, 43% neck trouble and 40% shoulder trouble. Sound familiar?

By identifying what your driving style is, you can learn how to adjust your car seat to reduce the incidence of RDI's. Ergonomic adjustments and low back pain exercises will help you avoid those symptoms. The history of Buddha is a matter of contention amongst many historians. There is this group of old school of historians that stick to the fact that the enlightened one was born in modern day Nepal. While a group of recent historians and archeologists mostly from orissa claim Him to be belonging to Orissa and later having shifted to Varanasi. They cite the presence of four Buddhist universities in the state as support too.

Whatever be the claims of historians relating to Lord Buddha, the presence of so many Stupas and Viharas in Orissa is pointer to the fact that Buddhism had once played an important part in the history of the state. Of all the monasteries that have been discovered in Orissa, the ones forming the Diamond triangle viz Udayagiri and Ratnagiri, Lalitgiri in the langudi hills are known for their magnificence . A visit to the diamond triangle takes you to a separate plane altogether. The place apart from being historically important is set in a locale that is simply marvelous.

Ratnagiri

Ratnagiri, on the bank of River Keluo, has produced the best find and has apart from the extensive Verandahs and Stupas a large khondalite Buddha image and remnants of about 24 cells for monks which were built of brick but had stone door frames. The intricate carving on the doorway of the back porch wall simply adds to the beauty of the entire structure. The site includes three monasteries (two quadrangular), eight temples and several stupas believed to date from the seventh century. Mentions about this monastery were found in Hiuen Tsang, the Chinese traveller's musings where he describes described it as one of Orissa's two Buddhist centers of learning

Udayagiri

Udayaagiri has better preserved carvings of the three sites. . The monastery, within a large compound, has 18 cells with a veranda arranged around a courtyard. The 3-m Lokesvar Buddha image here has an eighth-century inscription on it.

Lalitgiri

Lalitgiri was excavated only i! n 1985 a nd the findings in the site included a 20-m-high apsidal temple have been found together with sculptures and decorated door jambs. A stone platform with inscriptions dates this site closer to the second century.

The Buddhist complexes of the Langudi hills are echoes of the civilization that once flourished in Orissa. And no matter what historians have to say about Buddha, accentuate the importance of Buddhists and Buddhist tradition in the modern day Orissa. The place is a must vist for not only history students but tourists also.

Knee And Back Pain with the Help of Yoga Part 1

Knee and back pain can be alleviated through practice of both yoga postures that stretch and strengthen the muscles around the knee joint. With knees, make sure that the knee stays in line with the ankle and does not twist in or out. Avoid seated postures that have the knee turned out to the side (like bound angle, seated head to knee). When doing postures with the knees on the floor, make sure you use a blanket or other padding so you do not feel any pain or intense pressure.

You should set up a specific goal for the day and try to attain it, however much it hurts (within reason). A beginning goal might be to walk half a block a day and increase the distance gradually over time. Doctors and physical therapists can help determine safe and effective ways to recondition your bodies. Initially, it will hurt. The muscles have not been used for a long time. The pain signifies that the muscle being exercised has been weakened by lack of use. Gentle stretching exercises such as yoga are very useful, this will help your knee and back pain.

With knee pain, over a period of time the lower back will also begin to suffer. As the pressure of relieving the 'weak' knee is transferred to the other, which in turn puts pressure on the lower back.

You may not notice this shift as the body is really good at compensating and with the imbalance now in place, this now becomes the 'norm' as the body tries to re-balance itself. Sometimes back pain will be felt, not always.

Even if you do practice yoga, it is always a good idea to have your body/spine checked for imbalances by your healthcare professional. Visiting your osteopath, spinal therapist, chiropractor, massage therapist every now and again will help you to be more aware of your body and to take steps to rectify any imbalances.

The researchers say that exercise has previously been shown to relieve chronic low back pain, but this is the first study to suggest yoga may be superior t! o other forms of exercise. "Yoga may be beneficial for back pain because it involves physical movement, but it may also exert benefits through its effects on mental focus," they write. This focus could help patients "increase their awareness of how they had been moving and positioning their body in maladaptive ways, to relax tense muscles, and to relieve mental stress."

Statins May Make You Tired

Some people who take statins may find themselves feeling more tired than usual, a new study suggests.

In the study, people taking the cholesterol-lowering drugs were more likely to experience decreased energy, fatigue during exercise, or both, compared with those not taking statins.

The side effect of increased fatigue should be taken into account when doctors weigh the risks and benefits of prescribing the drugs for a particular patient, the researchers said.

"Energy is central to quality of life. It also predicts interest in activity," said study researcher Dr. Beatrice Golomb, an associate professor of medicine at University of California San Diego School of Medicine.

Some patients have reported fatigue or a decreased ability to exercise when taking statins, but researchers had not studied the issue rigorously.

In the new study, Golomb and colleagues analyzed information from 1,000 adults in San Diego. Participants were randomly assigned to take statins at a relatively low potency — they took either 40 milligrams the drug pravastatin (known by the brand name Pravachol), 20 mg of simvastatin (Zocor) or a placebo.

Neither the participants nor the researchers knew which treatment the participant had received. Participants rated their energy, and their fatigue while exerting themselves, relative to before they were placed on the drugs, on a scale from "much worse" to "much better."

Those placed on statins were significantly more likely than those taking the placebo to report worsening in energy, fatigue with exertion, or both.

The effect appeared to be stronger with simvastatin.

Four of 10 women treated with simvastatin cited worsened energy or exertion fatigue, and two in 10 cited worsening in both, or rated either one as "much worse," the researchers said.

"Side effects of statins generally rise with increasing dose, and these doses were modest by current standards," Golomb said. "Yet occurrence of this problem was not rare — even at these doses, and particularly in women."

The study is published in the June 11 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine.

Sleepy People Choose Unhealthy Foods

A bad night's sleep makes people less resistant to unhealthy foods, and even results in more pleasure from indulging, according to two new studies.

In one study, researchers scanned people's brains while the people looked at pictures of food. The "reward center" in sleep-deprived participants lit up more when they looked at unhealthy foods than at healthy foods, and also lit up more than the reward center of  well-rested people looking at unhealthy foods.

"Our data strongly suggests that if you're trying to control your weight, being sleep-deprived is not good for you," said study researcher Marie-Pierre St-Onge of the New York Obesity Researcher Center.

In St-Onge's study, 25 participants of normal weight spent five nights in a lab, alternating between getting nine hours of sleep, and four hours. 

Participants were shown photos of foods generally perceived to be healthy (such as fruits, vegetables and oatmeal) and unhealthy (such as candy, pepperoni pizza and doughnuts).

The researchers found that when allowed to choose their own food, people ate 300 more calories per day, on average, after a night of four hours' sleep.

In the other study, 16 participants were observed after getting either a full night's sleep or staying awake for 24 hours. Participants were shown pictures of food and asked to rate their desire for that food.

Sleep-deprived people said they were more interested in the unhealthy foods, and brain scans also showed impaired activity in the frontal lobe and other brain regions associated with complex decision-making.

"When you're sleep-deprived, you might not make appropriate food choices," said study researcher Stephanie Greer, a graduate student at the University of California, Berkeley. The brain can no longer convince itself that a healthy food is the right choice due to the health benefits, and instead it focuses on taste, the researchers said.

This study did not look at actual decisions people make about what to eat. However, the idea that people would act on their desires for unhealthy food is a "realistic possibility," said Michael Walker, a sleep psychologist at UC Berkeley.

The results of the new studies are in line with previous work but go beyond what's known to show howthe brain reacts to sleep deprivation, said sleep epidemiologist James Gangwisch of Columbia University, who was not involved in the research.

Gangwisch suggested the link between getting little sleep and eating more has its root in evolutionary biology: Human ancestors slept less during summer months, when they had to eat more to fatten up for the winter.

Now "we're fattening up, year round, for a wintertime that never does come," he said.

Research has shown many times that sleep is critical to helping the brain make healthy choices, Wall said.

"I think people are always surprised that sleep isn't just a dormant state, but performs a lot of functions," he said.

Both studies were presented June 9 at a sleep researchers conference in Boston.

I sat overcome in a mixture of joy and sadness, trying to make this moment last forever. She must have sensed my thoughts for she leaned over and placed her head on my shoulder and said, "Don't try to make things stay as they are. Life is a process that changes constantly. You've heard the old saying, 'Life is not the candle nor the flame. It's the burning.' Of necessity, this moment will pass, but there will be new moments, perhaps, more glorious ones."

"Do we meet like this often?" I asked, not knowing quite what to say.

"Not exactly like this. But we do meet. You'll remember this meeting for a long time. The other meetings are just like dreams to you, but no less valid. Those you may not remember and, if you do, they are very faint and somewhat vague. This meeting was arranged so you could see and experience how reality is different in different states of consciousness. And naturally, I wanted you to know that I've never abandoned you, I've never left you. I am always around when you need me."

My emotions crested as I blurted out, "Why did you leave me and the children so soon? When you died, our entire world came to a grinding halt. They were so young. You were so young. You suffered so much. I was hoping that we'd grow old together. Then you left and it's never been the same since."

"I was wondering when you'd get around to that. It wasn't that anyone was picking on you and the kids,John," she answered. "It was all a part of the grand plan that we agreed upon long before we were born. My work on Earth was finished. I had to leave so that you could fulfill your mission. My suffering taught you compassion in a way that you'd never forget. Whether you realize it or not, I'm still a help to you now. I can do lots more from where I am. There's a wonderful pattern in all of this. But sometimes patterns don't make much sense while they're being woven. Our emotions can cloud our perception and understanding. Eventually, you'll see the beauty of the whole thing. Don't analyze e! verythin g so much. Some experiences like joy, peace, love, faith and hope do not lend themselves easily to analysis. It's enough to know that we do not, cannot die. We are bound by ties that stretch from eternity to the shores of forever."

The real doctrine of no-soul

 Buddhism, at times, seems split right down the middle between those who firmly believe the Buddha denied the self or âtman and those who insist he didn't.  Stress Reduction scholars, for the most part, take the latter position to the extent that the Buddha did not unambiguously deny the self.  This, I hasten to add, is different than what Stress Reduction clergy teach who, more than often, tend to believe that the Buddha categorically denied the self.  There is no real, fundamental self, in other words.

In Pali and Sanskrit, anattâ and anâtman do not mean there is no self.  Far from it.  For example, when the Buddha says that form, which is the first of the Five Aggregates (P., khandhas; S., skandhas), is anattâ or anâtman, this means in English that form is not the self or the soul. In this respect, anattâ could well be an adjective insofar as what it is applied to, in the example of form or rûpa, lacks a soul or a self.  Essentially, what the Buddha is teaching us is we should not mistake our psychophysical body for our true self—it is not our soul (anâtman).

Understanding self or the soul in this way is much differnt than believing the Buddha taught there is no self.  When the Theravada monk Walpola Rahula asserts, in his book, What the Buddha Taught, "that the Buddha denied categorically, in unequivocal terms ... the existence of Âtman, Soul, Self, or Ego," he is clearly wrong.  Instead, the Buddha did not teach there is no self, soul or âtman rather he taught that the Five Aggregates, which make up our psychophysical body, lack the âtman or the self.  Thus, if we wish to know our true nature or self, we should not look for it in our psychophysical being which is impermanent and suffering.  It is not there.  In fact, the Buddha said of each constitutent or aggregate such as form or feeling, "This is not mine, this am I not, this is not my self."

Westerners and Asians who insist that the Buddha, in unequivocal terms, denied the self or the soul are really engaged in fraud if by fraud we mean intentional misrepresentation.  I am convinced that it is no accident that a concerted effort has been made by some Stress Reductions to give a misrepresentation of what the Buddha taught as regards the self or soul.  Here is an example of what I mean.  

Is any one of the five aggregates the self or soul (atta)? The Buddha's answer is "No." Then what remains to be called the self or the soul? As has been said above, apart from the five aggregates there remains nothing to be called the soul" (Kenneth W. Morgan, The Path of the Buddha, pp. 83–84).

In this quote the author should know that in many, many examples found in the Pali Nikayas the Buddha wants his followers to reject the Five Aggregates as being who they really are. The Buddha then goes on to say of each aggregate: This is not mine, I am not this, this is not my self."  In other words, the Buddha invites his disciples to cease identifying with what is not their true being or soul, namely, the aggregate form, feeling, conceptualization, volitions and consciousness. These aggregates or khandhas may seem to belong to me but they are not my true self.  Thus, the teaching of anâtman is not intended to deny the self or soul.  Its only purpose is to call on us to reject the Five Aggregates as being our soul. What I truly am as a self or a soul transcends the aggregates.
