Relax, you’ve arrived

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 01:00 PM PDT

We spend so much of our time trying to get somewhere.

Part of this comes from our biological nature. To survive, animals – including us – have to be goal-directed, leaning into the future.

It's certainly healthy to pursue wholesome aims, like paying the rent on time, raising children well, healing old pain, or improving education.

But it's also important to see how this focus on the future – on endless striving, on getting the next task done, on climbing the next mountain – can get confused and stressful.

It's confused because the brain:

  • Overestimates both the pleasure of future gains and the pain of future losses. (This evolved to motivate our ancient ancestors to chase carrots hard and really dodge sticks.)
  • Makes the future seem like a real thing when in fact it doesn't actually exist and never will. There is only now, forever and always.
  • Overlooks or minimizes the alrightness of this moment – including the many things already resolved or accomplished – in order to keep you looking for the next threat or opportunity. (For more on how the brain makes us stressed and fearful, see Buddha's Brain.)

Further, this pursuit of the next thing is confused because the mind tends to transfer unfulfilled needs from childhood into the present, such as to be safe, worthy, attractive, successful, or loved. These longings often take on a life of their own – even after the original issues have been largely or even wholly resolved. Then we're like the proverbial donkey trying to get a carrot held out in front of it on a pole: no matter how long we chase it, it's always still ahead, never attained. For example, for years I pursued achievement due to underlying feelings of inadequacy; how many accomplishments does a person need to feel like a worthwhile person?

Besides being confused and confusing, striving is stressful. You've got to fire up, activating the fight-or-flight sympathetic nervous system and its related stress hormones. There's a sense of pressure, of worry about a future that's inherently uncertain, of entrapment on a neverending treadmill. There's a lack of soothing and balance that would come from recognizing the truth of things:

You've actually already arrived.

How?

Recognize the simple fact that you got here, in this place, and now, in this moment. It may not be perfect. But think of the many things you have certainly done to come here. At a minimum, you survived high school! You've taken many steps, solved many problems, put many tasks and challenges behind you.

The word, "arrive," comes from roots that mean "to reach the shore." Once you land, of course, life is not over, since the next moment will be a new arrival. But sinking into the sense of having arrived, of having crossed the finish line of this moment, is calming, happy, and deserved. And knowing you've arrived, you now are more able to turn your attention toward being of true service to others.

To deepen the sense of arrival, help yourself relax into this moment. From time to time, you could softly say in your mind: arriving . . . arrived . . . arriving . . .

Draw on your body to strengthen this experience. Let each breath land in your awareness: arriving . . . arrived . . . arriving . . . Be aware of the bite landing in the mouth, the meal consumed, the body fed. As you walk, notice that, with each step, you have reached another place. Know that your hand has reached a cup, that the eye has received a sunset, that the smile of a friend has landed in your heart.

Consider old longings, old drives, that truly may be fulfilled, at least to a reasonable extent. (And if not fulfilled, maybe it's time to let something go and move on.) Can you lighten up about these? Or can you accept that you have arrived at a place this moment that contains unfulfilled goals and unmet needs? It's still an arrival. Plus it's a "shore" that probably has many good things about it no matter what's still undone.

In the deepest sense, reflect on the fact that each moment arrives complete in itself. Each wave lands on the shore of Now – complete in its own right.

Arriving . . . arrived . . . arriving . . . Arrived.

Experience the beauty of the Annapurna region of Nepal

Annapurna Travel guide

The Annapurna region lies in central Nepal. Named after the Hindu goddess Annapurna (the bestower of food), who is regarded as a manifestation of goddess Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva. The chief mountains in this region include the Dhaulagiri, Annapurna and Manaslu Himal. The Annapurna Himal, which lies between the Kali Gandaki and Marsyangdi river valley, forms a solid mountain bastion. It covers a distance of 40 miles and encompasses within its range some twelve peaks that rise to an elevation of more than 7000m and numerous other lesser peaks.

Climate, Flora & FaunaThe climate in the Annapurna region varies from subtropical to alpine. The southern slopes of the area has the highest rainfall rate in the country- 3000mm per year, whereas the northern slopes lying in the rain shadow has the lowest rate - less than 300mm per year. The difference in the climatic conditions in this region is responsible for its varied flora and fauna. The Annapurna region possesses a variety of flora and fauna. It stretches from the subtropical lowlands and the high temperate rhododendron forest in the south, to a dry alpine steppe environment in the North. The Southern lowlands are lush with subtropical forests consisting of chirpine and alder. In the Northern highlands temperate forests of oaks, rhododendron, fir, and blue pine are found. The wet regions yield a variety of bamboo species. The higher altitude further North give rise to forests of birch, blue pine and juniper trees, which are replaced by juniper and rhododendron in the far North. In the semi-desert rain shadow region, behind the Himalayas, bushes of caragana and juniper species are evident. It has several species of wildlife. There are around four hundred and seventy-four species of birds, and around a hundred species of mammals. The Annapurna region serves as an excellent habitat for rare and endangered mammals like the snow leopard, musk deer, blue sheep, red panda and many of Nepal's brilliantly! plumage d pheasants

Annapurna peaksThe Annapurna massif contains six major peaks over 7,200 m: Annapurna I(8091m), Annapurna II(7937m), Annapurna III(7555m), Annapurna IV(7525m), Gangapurna(7455m) and Annapurna South(7219m). Annapurna I, standing at a height of 8,091 m, is the tenth highest summit in the world. It is located east of a great gorge cut through the Himalaya by the Kali Gandaki River, which separates it from the Dhaulagiri massifAnnapurna was the first 8000m peak scaled by a climber. Till 1948, Nepal was closed to all foreigners. It was in the year 1949 that the kingdom opened its doors to mountaineers. In that year two foreign teams received permission to enter the country, one Swiss and another American. In 1950, a French mountaineering team led by Maurice Herzog succeeded in climbing Annapurna, an 8000m peak. They had no information about the peak they would climb. With little or no information, they decided to take on the Annapurna. On 3rd June, Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenel reached the summit of Annapurna I, after climbing for eight hours. They had to suffer from severe frostbite which cost Maurice Herzog his toes and fingers. Herzog has written about the climb in his book The Conquest of Annapurna 1950.

In 1957 Wilfred Noyce and David Cox climbed Machapuchhre (6997m) to within 50m of its summit. After this attempt, the government prohibited further climbing on the mountain. So technically Machapuchre remains unclimbed.

Annapurna II, the eastern anchor of the range, was first climbed in 1960 by a British/Indian/Nepalese team led by Jimmy Roberts, via the West Ridge, approached from the north. Annapurna III was first climbed in 1961 by an Indian expedition team led by Mohan Kohli. The summit party comprised Mohan Kohli, Sonam Gyatso, and Sonam Girmi. They climbed from the Northeast Face.

Tharpu Chuli (Tent Peak), shaped like a tent, at 5663m is an ideal peak for a short expedition. Lying across the Annapurna glacier, the peak offers excellent views of its neighbouring ! peaks fr om its summit. Pisang Peak (6091m) forms part of the Manang Himal. Towering above the Marshyangdi valley, this peak was first ascended by J.Wellenkamp, a German climber, in 1955.The start of the ascent to this peak starts at a village which shares its name: Pisang.

Machhapuchhare (fish tail) (3700m) Machhapuchre lies in the center of the Annapurna Himal. Machhapuchhre possesses the rare beauty that makes it one of the world's most photographed peaks. Poon Hill(3193m)is the westernmost crest of a spur that juts into the Kali Gandaki. The hill is named after the Magars called Poon, who live in that area. To watch the sunrise over the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna Himal from this hill is an experience of a lifetime.

People & PlacesThe Gurungs form the largest group in the Annapurna region. They come from Tibeto burman stock. Although essentially Buddhists some Gurungs have converted to Hinduism. They inhabit the higher northern slopes of the Annapurna, Lamjung,Chuli and hills around Ganesh Himal. A large number of Gurung men serve in the British and Indian armies. The immediate vicinity of Pokhara is largely populated by Chettris and Bahuns (Brahmins). They also live around the historic site of the old Gorkha kingdom. The Magars inhabit the lower trail between Baglung and Dana. They live high on the steep ridges along the tributaries of the Kali Gandaki.

Another ethnic group of this region is the Thakalis. Known throughout the country as accomplished hoteliers and skilled traders, they are noted for their aggressive trading spirit. They make up one of the few richer groups of people in Nepal. The Jomsom trek passes through Thak Khola, the Thakali homeland.

In the valley of the Muktinath live the Baragaun Bhotiya. Their lifestyle is similar to that of the Tibetans. Another group of people who share a close affinity to the Tibetans are the Lopa people of Mustang, north of Kagbeni. Some of them practice the ancient pre-Buddhist religion of Bon which is infused with animistic and ! shamanic belief and ritual. The people living in the upper Marshyandi valley are generally known as Mananges. The Nyeshang area, under which fall the villages of Manang, Braga and Ngawal. The people are of Tibetan origin. But their language Nyeshang is not a Tibetan dialect. This area is popularly known by the name of its largest village Manang.

Pokhara [827m]Pokhara is the main town in central Nepal. It is the starting place of most of the major treks in the Annapurna region. Situated at an altitude of 827m, it is warmer and humid than Kathmandu. This town is known for its picturesque spots like the Phewa Tal(lake), on whose clear water you can see the reflection of the Mt.Machhapuchhre and the Annapurna Himal, Rara Lake and Begnas Lake. Pokhara is one of the major travel destinations in Nepal.

Muktinath [3,710m]Muktinath, a sacred place both for Hindus as well as Buddhists, is located at an altitude of 3,710 m at the foot of the Thorong La pass in Mustang district. The Hindus call the place Mukti Kshetra, which means the "the place of salvation", while the Buddhists call it Chumig Gyatsa, Tibetan for 'Hundred Waters'. For Tibetan Buddhists Chumig Gyatsa is a place of Dakinis, goddesses known as Sky Dancers. Jwala Mai Temple, Vishnu Temple, Marme Lhakhang and Gompa Sarwa are some of the religious shrines to visit. The springs from the Gandaki River spurts out of the 108 waterspouts near the Vishnu temple, from where the Hindu pilgrims take ritual bathe. One item that is unique to this place is the Saligrams (Ammonite fossils). These are black stones that when broken open, reveal the fossilized remains of prehistoric ammonites formed about 130 million years ago. The old specks that appear on many saligram are pyrite (fool's gold). Hindus believe that the saligrams represent the god Vishnu.

Jomsom [2713m] Jomsom serves as the centre for Mustang valley. It lies on the banks of the Kali Gandaki River. There is an airstrip here with scheduled service to Kathmandu. The increase in the frequency of ! flights has brought more tourists to this area. Jomsom has a bank, post office, telecom office, a hospital and numerous hotels and lodges.

Manang [3520m]The Manang area was only recently opened to trekkers. The dry and arid region of Manang called Nyeshang lies at an altitude of 3520m. There is an abundance of large chortens and mani walls. The people of Nyeshang were granted special trading privileges by the King of Nepal hundred years ago. The businessmen from these parts are reputed to be both keen and astute. The tall peaks of the Himalaya - Annapurna II, Annapurna III, Annapurna IV, Gangapurna [7455m] and Tilicho Peak [7134m] are visible from this place. There is also a Himalayan Rescue Association [HRA] aid post in the village which makes an interesting and educational visit.

The Major Treks

Royal Trek: This is a magnificent trek stretching across two different river valleys. It encircles the Annapurna massif and goes through the Thorong La [5416 m.] the highest pass on this trek. The trek begins at Besisahar in the Marsyangdi river valley and finally concludes at Kali Gandaki river valley. This is a moderate to challenging trek which sometime requires a walk up the steep mountain path. This trek can be done anytime of the year except during monsoon and winter.

Ghorepani Trek: This trek is well suited for beginners or for those who have limited time. The trek starts from Phedi. The trail passes through rhododendron forest and traditional Gurung villages. A comparatively easy trek, it takes you up to an elevation of 2775 m at Ghorepani. The trip can be done anytime ofthe year except during monsoon.

Pokhara -Jomsom -Muktinath: Beginning from Nayapul, the trail passes over the Ghorepani pass and descends down to Kali Gandaki valley. Watching the dawn breaking over the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna peaks from Ghorepani is one spectacular scene that you get to witness on this trek. Once you reach Jomsom you can either continue trekking to Muktinath or explore the village! s around Jomsom. This is an easy trek that can be done any time of the year except during monsoon.

Annapurna Base Camp Trek: The route to the original Annapurna Base Camp was discovered by Maurice Herzog and his team in 1950. The Annapurna Base Camp trek leads to a natural amphitheater that is used as the base camp from which climbers start on their way to conquer the Annapurna peak. The peak reaches 8091 meters above sea level, and the base camp's altitude is 4130 meters above sea level. The trek into the area below the massive south face of Annapurna, known as the Annapurna Sanctuary, is one of the most popular treks in Nepal. The trek begins in Pokhara and leads up through the breathtaking Modi Khola gorge into the vast mountain ringed amphitheatre of the Sanctuary. The trail passes through bamboo and rhododendron forests with superb views of the Annapurna range. The high glacial basin is the site of the Annapurna south face base camp. This is a classic trek, which allows access to the high mountains of the Himalaya within a reasonable time frame. This trip can be done anytime of the year except during monsoon.

Annapurna Circuit Trek: It is a picturesque valley, first discovered in 1957 by Jimmy Roberts. Ten peaks of 600-800m rises from it. Machhapuchhare looks breathtaking from this viewpoint as also the south face of Annapurna. The Sanctuary falls within the area managed by the Annapurna Conservation Area Project. The Annapurna Circuit is the popular name for a 300 km trek in the Annapurna mountain range. The trek reaches an altitude of 5,300m on the Thorung Lapass, touching the edge of the fabled Tibetan plateau. The magnificent mountain scenery, seen at close quarters includes Annapurna, Dhauligiri, and Machhupuchhare. This is a moderate to challenging trek which sometime requires ascending and descending the steep mountain path. This trek can be done anytime of the year except during monsoon and winter when the Thorong pass gets blocked by snow.

It uses a technique commonly called palm healing as a form of complementary and alternative medicine and is sometimes classified as oriental medicine by some professional bodies.[2] Through the use of this technique, practitioners claim to transfer healing energy in the form of ki through the palms.[3] Tantra (Sanskrit: तन्त्र , Oriya: "loom, warp"; hence "principle, system, doctrine", from the two root words tanoti "stretch, extend", and trayati "liberation"), anglicised tantricism or tantrism or tantram, is an esoteric current of Hinduism. Research Indicates Hundreds of Injuries a Day Surrounding July 4 Holiday Festivities

A special study (pdf) conducted by CPSC staff found that 65 percent of all fireworks injuries in 2011 were sustained during the 30 days surrounding the Independence Day holiday. More than half of these injuries were the result of unexpected ignition of the device or consumers not using fireworks as intended. Fireworks injuries most often resulted in burns to the hands and head, including the eyes, face, and ears. According to the special study, sparklers, firecrackers, and aerial devices were associated with the most incidents.

Whether it is the sparkle of the bright lights, or the thunderous boom of the explosion, there is no denying the thrill that fireworks can bring to an Independence Day celebration. Unfortunately, when consumers get their hands on professional fireworks, the results can be deadly. Last year, CPSC received reports of four consumers who were killed by either professional-grade or homemade firework devices, while an estimated 9,600 consumers were injured.

fireworks, safety tips

"For thousands of consumers, last year's 4th of July celebration ended with a visit to the emergency room," said CPSC Chairman Inez Tenenbaum. "CPSC wants you to understand the risks with legal and illegal fireworks, in order to prevent an injury, or worse, during this holiday."

While the majority of fireworks injury reports involve emergency room treatment and release, CPSC is aware of more severe and fatal injuries that are associated with consumer use of professional-grade and homemade fireworks. Reports of faster-than-expected explosions and unpredictable flight paths of aerial devices have resulted in tragic consequences for some consumers.

In the four reported fireworks-related deaths, the victims were killed when the illegal devices exploded, causing severe trauma to the head and face, and resulting in decapitation in one incident. In other incidents involving professional-grade or homemade devices, the victims reportedly sustained severe burns and the loss of fingers.

fireworks, safety tips

On the grounds of the Washington Monument today, Chairman Tenenbaum led the agency's annual fireworks press event, including a live demonstration of the dangers associated with fireworks and provided consumers with commonsense steps to prevent injuries this year. The Chairman was joined by Arthur Herbert, Assistant Director of Enforcement Programs and Services with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), and Cynthia Quarterman, Administrator of the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration with the Department of Transportation (DOT).

CPSC and its federal partners highlighted continued import surveillance and enforcement actions to prevent hazardous firework devices from reaching the U.S. marketplace. CPSC and its partners at ATF and DOT are committed to stopping the manufacture, importation, and sale of illegal fireworks.

Consumers who decide to purchase legal fireworks are urged to take these safety steps:

fireworks, safety tips

  • Make sure fireworks are legal in your area before buying or using them.
  • Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks. Parents may not realize that young children suffer injuries from sparklers. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees-hot enough to melt some metals.
  • Always have an adult closely supervise fireworks activities if older children are allowed to handle devices.
  • Avoid buying fireworks that are packaged in brown paper because this is often a sign that the fireworks were made for professional displays and that they could pose a danger to consumers.
  • Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse. Back up to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks.
  • Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire or other mishap.
  • Never try to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks. Soak them with water and throw them away.
  • Never point or throw fireworks at another person.
  • Light fireworks one at a time, then move back quickly.
  • Never carry fireworks in a pocket or shoot them off in metal or glass containers.
  • After fireworks complete their burning, douse the spent device with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding it to prevent a trash fire.

Buddhism and Healthy Longevity

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 11:00 AM PDT

Article by Stephen Lau

Copyright (c) 2007 Stephen Lau

Buddhism is more than an Eastern religion: it is a healthy longevity promoter.

Buddhism focuses on the balanced interaction between the mind and the body as a prerequisite for healthy longevity; disease is a result of their imbalance and disharmony. The Buddhist approach to health and wellness is its emphasis on spiritual strength of the mind to overcome illness and disease. Concurring with Hippocrates, the father of medicine, who believed in the innate healing power in humans, Buddha also believed that you could seek cure through a drastic change in lifestyle and healthy attitudes towards the real meaning of life and existence.

Healing begins with the mind first, not the body. The reason is that disease originates from the disharmony of the mind and the spirit, leading to their imbalance with the physical body, resulting in disease. Optimal health for longevity is achieved when the mind and the body are functioning and interacting together as one entity.

One of the most damaging factors to the mind is stress. Nowadays, stress comes in many forms. Stress adversely affects your physical, mental, and spiritual health. In the Buddhist world, there is no stress, and you create your own stress through your ego-self, which is essentially your "no-self" because it simply does not exist, except in your own mind. Buddhism focuses on "emptiness" ' which is not self-denial, but rather the wisdom of knowing the impermanence of materials things and therefore the abandonment of the futile pursuit of these elusive and evasive goals in life. With enlightenment, you will change your perception of what you really are, and more importantly, the insignificance of your attachment to all materials things, including success and love of money. Buddha said, "Craving is the fountainhead of all human miseries." Once your craving ceases, your stress dissipates, and you are filled with composure, which constitutes wellness in your body and mind.

Even if there are re! mnants o f stress, they can be dispelled through Buddhist meditation. According to Buddha, everyone has a "light" within him or her. To find that "light", you need to practice meditation. Through meditation, you are awakened to self-knowledge, which opens the door to ultimate wisdom: you see who you are, and what is important to you in life. In other words, you begin to see the realities of things around you; you begin to prioritize your life; and you begin to perceive the true meaning of your existence.

Natural healing of the mind, body, and spirit begins with a healthy love relationship in which Buddhist compassion and loving kindness naturally thrive. In Chinese, the word "compassion" means "removing suffering and giving happiness." From Buddha's view, true compassion has the power to root out the cause of misery in people's lives and direct them to the true cause of happiness.

Loving kindness, closely connected with compassion, is also a prominent feature of the Buddhist way of live. Compassion and loving kindness complement each other. Extending good will, care and consideration to all beings is critical to mental and spiritual health of an individual.

If you are truly committed to altruistic compassion and loving kindness, you will be armed with inner strength to face any health adversity in your life, thereby instrumental in inspiring hope in others, and by doing so, helping relieve their own suffering. Aging and illness simply provide an opportunity for you to inspire others through your own example.

Healing is a natural blend of science and philosophy of living. Buddhism certainly plays a pivotal role in the philosophy of living for healthy longevity.

How to Learn A Language in 90 Days

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 11:00 AM PDT

'If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart.' ~Nelson Mandela

Editor's note: This is a guest post from Maneesh Sethi of Hack The System.

I still remember the happiest moment of my life. I had decided to throw a party for my Italian friends while living in Florence, Italy. My friends didn't speak any English, and I vividly remember throwing the party and trying to only speak in Italian. And then, someone asked me to tell a joke.

I don't know if you know this, but telling jokes in another language is one of the most harrowing experiences you can imagine.

I began the joke. C'era una volta (Once upon a time) …

Halfway through the joke, I began to get flustered. I couldn't remember the Italian word in the punchline. And 30 Italians were staring at me, waiting for the joke to end.

At the last minute, I remembered and completed the joke. I waited for the sound of crickets … but instead experienced a thunderous laugh and a round of applause. I had made dozens of Italians laugh, in their country, in their language.

Until today, that memory continues to be one of the happiest moments I've ever experienced. And it's the reason that, over the last four years, I've studied languages and now speak five: English, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and German.

The Benefits of Bilingualism

Becoming bilingual opens up a whole new world—a world of different people, of different cultures, of different emotions.

Learning a second language has many cognitive benefits. For example, learning a new language has been shown to delay Alzheimer's, boost brainpower, reduce cognitive biases, and even increase concentration and the ability to tune out distractions. Your ability to build better habits will improve by learning a new language.

But, more so than cognitive effects, the ability to speak a second language has a ton of social benefits. There's bliss in having the ability to order food in the waiter's native language, to eavesdrop on people in an elevator, to impress natives by speaking with and understanding them.

The coolest thing about learning your second language is that it makes learning a third, fourth, or fifth language much easier. The challenge isn't in learning a new language, but rather learning how to learn a language. Once you know the techniques, you'll be able to apply the same grammatical patterns and language techniques in every new language you learn. It's for this reason that, while Italian took me 3 or so months to master, Spanish took only 2 months and Portuguese took just a few weeks.

Why most people are wrong about language learning

I studied spanish for several years in high school, and even got good grades on national exams. But one day, when I actually tried to speak the language, I suddenly realized.

Four years of studying Spanish in school, and I couldn't even order a burrito.

So what went wrong? According to official standardized tests, I was an expert in Spanish. But I couldn't even do the most basic of tasks!

The fact is that we not taught languages in the ideal way. Students study languages in huge groups and think that a few worksheets and grammar exercises will be enough to learn a language.

Yet almost no one actually learns to speak.

In actuality, by doing worksheets, we are practicing for just that—for worksheets. But if you want to learn to speak, well, you actually have to practice by speaking.

So when people try to learn to speak a language out of a book, or with Rosetta Stone, I try to show them that they won't achieve their goals that way. If you want to speak, you have to practice speaking. And if you want to speak a language rapidly, well, you have to start speaking. A lot.

The Basic Strategy Of Rapid Language Learning

Learning a language can seem daunting, so I'm going to provide an overview of the general strategy, before we get into the specifics.

Here is the breakdown. We'll go more in depth into each of these later on.

1. Get the right resources for learning: A grammar book, memorization software, and films/books.

2. Get a private tutor. You want one for at least a month. I recommend four hours/day.

3. Attempt to speak and think only in the new language. Every time you can't remember a word, put that word into your memorization software. Practice your vocabulary daily.

4. Find friends, language partners, and other speakers of the language. Once you can have basic conversations with your private tutor, you need to find other partners. If you haven't already, think about moving to the country where the language is spoken. Consider a group class. Practice continuously. Stop speaking English.

That's the basic strategy. Again, this strategy is intensive, because learning a language in three months is a difficult task. If you'd prefer to learn the language more slowly or you don't have the ability to move to a new country and practice 4-8 hours a day, then you can modify the plan. It is extremely important that you practice every day, however—20 minutes a day is much better than once or twice a week.

Some of these concepts are hard to understand through the written word, so I created a video series, just for Zen Habits readers, that teaches the steps to learn a language. Get the Hack The System Language Learning Videos here.

The Resources You Need To Learn A Language

In order to learn a language, you'll need some items that you can practice with. Here are the resources I always use.

The Necessary Resources

A good grammar book. This is essential if you want to learn a language. I recommend Dover's Essential Grammar series: the books are very cheap, concise, and thorough. When I lived in Italy, the Dover Essential Italian Grammar book became my bible. I read it everywhere, slept with it, and even memorized it.

A phrase book. This is similar to a dictionary, but for phrases. You can start memorizing full sentences and phrases, and you'll naturally learn the individual words. I'll talk more about memorization tactics shortly.

An online dictionary. For most romance langauges, I recommend http://wordreference.com. For German, try http://dict.cc. Google Translate can be useful, but it easily becomes a crutch. Use it sparingly.

A memorization app. You have to memorize vocabulary. I always put new words in my app, and practice them every night.

If you're on a Mac, check out the app Genius. This genius app (pun intended) uses time-spacing techniques to test our knowledge. You'll randomly be quizzed on words or phrases you are trying to learn, and the more often you make a mistake, the more often you'll be tested. I recommend you put English on the left column and your desired language on the right, so that you'll learn to speak in a new language, not translate from it. If you're on a PC, I've heard good things about Anki.

Resources to learn from

A Private Tutor. I highly recommend getting an in-person private tutor through Craigslist or a nearby language school. However, if you can't find anyone in your area or they are too expensive, check out Edufire.com. Edufire is a website that allows you to take private and group classes online over the Internet. Again, remember, private lessons are essential, so skip the group classes.

Free language partners and tutors. The Mixxer is an incredible resource. It's a site that allows you to connect, via Skype, with language partners all over the world. Just choose your native language, and what you are trying to learn, and The Mixxer will find partners with opposite needs (who speak your target language and want to learn your native language).

At the beginning, online partners are a big help. Why? First, because chatting is much easier than speaking, so you get a chance to practice your language. Second, chat gives you a log of what you've been saying—and it makes it easier for your partner to correct you.

I use Couchsurfing.org and Meetup.com to find language partners and language meetups, no matter where I live. Check out Benny's article to learn about finding language partners through Couchsurfing.

I don't recommend Rosetta Stone. Rosetta Stone is incredibly slow. In Level 1, which takes 1-2 months to complete, you'll only be familiar with the present tense. This is not a good use of your time.

Pimsleur tapes, on the other hand, can be beneficial because they help you practice pronunciation in the context of conversations. However, they are still quite slow. To test this, I started training with the German Pimsleur tapes two weeks before beginning my German classes. I felt like I was making huge progress by finishing 1/2 of the German 1 tapes—until I had surpassed that knowledge in fewer than two days with an actual teacher.

The 90 Day Plan to Learning a Language

It's possible to achieve fluency, or at least a high speaking level, in just 90 days, but it requires intense focus. The biggest shift was in mindset: I had to change my self conception from 'Maneesh: a blogger who wants to learn Italian' to 'Maneesh: Italian learner (who blogs in his extra time).

If you don't have the freedom to focus fulltime on learning a language, that's okay, but the process will take longer than 90 days. Just make sure that you continue to practice every day, or else you'll lose your knowledge rapidly.

Days 1-30

The first thirty days are critical to learning a new language. You need to immerse yourself as fully as possible.

I highly recommend moving to a country where the language is spoken if you want to learn a language in 90 days. This will help you get into the language learning mindset, and will allow you to surround yourself with the new language. If you are able to move to a new country, try to live with a host family. You'll learn a lot by eating meals with a family that hosts you.

In any case, during the first month, work one on one with a private tutor—not group classes. Group classes allow you to sit back and be lazy, while a private tutor forces you to learn.

This is important: you must be an active learner. Most people allow themselves to be taught to, but you have to take an active role in asking questions. The best way to understand this process is via video—part of the video series I made to supplement this post includes a sample of a class I took while studying Swedish, with explanations of the questions I ask during private training. Check out the language learning videos I've made for this post here.

You're going to start encountering a lot of words and phrases that you don't know, both with your private tutor, and when you practice languages on your own. Enter these words in your memorization software.

You want to start memorizing 30 words and phrases per day. Why 30? Because in 90 days, you'll have learned 80% of the language.

This great article talks about the number of words in the Russian language.

the 75 most common words make up 40% of occurrences
the 200 most common words make up 50% of occurrences
the 524 most common words make up 60% of occurrences
the 1257 most common words make up 70% of occurrences
the 2925 most common words make up 80% of occurrences
the 7444 most common words make up 90% of occurrences
the 13374 most common words make up 95% of occurrences
the 25508 most common words make up 99% of occurrences

As you can see, you need to learn around 3000 to hit 80% of the words … probably enough before you can start learning words easily by context. At 30 words/day, you'll have learned almost 3000 in 90 days.

Use mnemonics to help memorize words.

Days 31-60

After your first month, it's time to focus on exposing yourself to the language as much as possible. After a month of private tutoring, you'll have the ability to have basic conversations.

If your private tutor is getting expensive, you might consider doing advanced group classes at this point—it'll save you money and give you access to other friends who are learning the language. Just be careful of speaking only in English. Try to make it a rule to speak in the new language as much as possible. Continue with your private tutor, if possible.

If at all possible, find a boyfriend or girlfriend who is a native speaker. Learning a language is much easier when you're dating someone who speaks that language. I once met a man who spoke fluent Russian, and when I asked him how long it took to learn, he answered, 'two wives.' The best advice I can give you for finding a significant other is something my Italian friend once told me: "Couchsurfing isn't a dating site … but it helps."

Now is the time to start finding language partners. Check out the Resources section above and use The Mixxer and Couchsurfing to find people who speak the language you want to learn. Attempt to spend a few hours everyday practicing your language. At this point, because you have a basic grasp of the language, it shouldn't be a chore—you are basically spending time socializing with new friends.

Try reading simple books in your target language and underlining words that you don't know. You can add these to your memorization app.

You should start trying to think in the new language. Every time you try to express a thought to yourself, but can't remember the word, write it down in your memorization software. Continue learning 30 words and phrases per day.

Days 61-90

By day 60, you should be in a good position to speak the language. You just simply need to keep practicing. Have deeper conversations with your language partners. Try to go out with them as much as possible—I've even found that a moderate amount of alcohol helps significantly with language practice.

Continue studying 30 words a day and practicing the ones you've already learned, and you'll be approaching the 3000 word mark—enough to speak a language close to fluently.

By now, you can start watching TV and reading books in your target language. Rent some DVDs in the foreign language and try to follow along. If you need to, turn on the subtitles. Don't worry if you have trouble, because understanding film is a lot more difficult than having a one-on-one conversation.

Keep on working on the language for several hours per day, and by the end of the month, you'll find that you have a good grasp on the language. It's pretty amazing what you can do in just 90 days with intense focus.

Conclusion

Congratulations! You've done it–you've learned a language in just 90 days. The best part is that you'll find it much faster to learn your next language. You've done the hard part–learning how to learn a language.

You've unlocked a new skill. Language learning is about building a new habit—the habit of thinking and speaking in a new language. And once you perfect a single language, you've laid the foundation for doing even more.

Imagine, the next time you meet a waiter or tourist from Italy or Mexico or Greece, you could start talking, tell a joke, and—if you can remember the punchline in time—get to experience the elation of making someone laugh in their own language.

That, my friends, is zen.

The Short and Long Term Consequences of Stress

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 10:00 AM PDT

Article by Joseph Goddard

Stress has become an accepted price we pay for living in a fast paced world where everyone has to race to keep pace. We are not beginning to understand that stress isn't something we should just live with, as it can be very detrimental to our health. That's why it's helpful to take a close look at some of the common effects that stress can have on us.

Some people handle stress by keeping it to themselves, while others become aggressive. Neither response is good for our health or well-being, but it's good to notice if you're doing either of these.

When you take your stress and bury it, you are probably going to explode one day, or end up with an ulcer. Stress makes people act in a variety of ways, such as Type A personalities, who like to lose their temper, while yelling and blaming someone else. The best approach is easier for some than others, because individual temperament, does not always allow for the reduction of stress.

Relationships, even those with family members, can have difficulties due to stress. Unfortunately, people deal with stress differently, and this in itself can be the cause of disagreements that leads to relationship problems. It doesn't matter if the stress was originally experienced by one party or both. People will often lash out at those closest to them when they experience stress, which is not a helpful response, as it only causes more stress. A family has enough stress all on its own, and the last thing needed is for stress from an outside source, like a place of employment, to be brought home. Taking your stress out on others never helps a situation, so deal with your stress directly.

Stress is the cause of many accidents on the road, as it can cause all kinds of irrational behavior. What is road rage but an extreme form of stress? You can't control most of what happens on the road, so you should work on not letting every red light, rude driver, pothole or slow lane elevate your stress level. Most people have to drive every day, so it's just not! worth i t to let this activity cause you stress, as it's not good for your health and increases the danger you face when you get into your car.

No matter what kind of consequences stress may be causing for you, you can be sure that managing this issue could help you in many ways. You may be experiencing stress in the type of ways discussed in this article, or in your own way, but in either case you should take an honest look at it.

Weight Loss May Boost Men's Testosterone

For some men, weight loss plays an important role in raising low testosterone levels, a new study finds.

In the study of overweight, middle-aged men with prediabetes, about half of those with low testosterone levels who attempted to lose weight by changing their lifestyle experienced an increase in their testosterone levels.

The findings suggest "doctors should first encourage overweight men with low testosterone levels to try to lose weight through diet and exercise, before resorting to testosterone therapy to raise their hormone levels," said study researcher Dr. Frances Hayes, a professor at St. Vincent's University Hospital, Dublin.

Hayes and colleagues analyzed information from nearly 900 men with prediabetes — a condition in which blood sugar levels are abnormally high, but not high enough to be classified as Type 2 diabetes. The men's average age was 54.

The men were randomly assigned to receive one of three treatments: the diabetes drug metformin, an inactive placebo pill or lifestyle modifications, which consisted of exercising for 150 minutes a week and eating less fat and fewer calories. The researchers said they considered men to have low testosterone if their levels were below 300 nanograms per deciliter of blood.

Among the men assigned to change their lifestyle, about 20 percent had low testosterone levels at the study's start. After one year, that number fell to 11 percent.

Among those taking metformin, 24.8 percent had low testosterone at the beginning of the study, and 23.8 percent still had the condition a year later. For the placebo group, the rate fell from 25.6 percent to 24.6 percent during the study.

Men in the lifestyle modification group lost an average of about 17 pounds over the one-year study, and testosterone levels among men in this group increased 15 percent on average, the researchers said. (Men in the metformin group lost about 6 pounds.)

"Losing weight not only reduces the risk of prediabetic men progressing to diabetes but also appears to increase their body's production of testosterone," Hayes said.

The study was presented this week at the Endocrine Society's annual Meeting in Houston.

Self Hypnosis Techniques For Stress Management And Body Relaxation

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 09:00 AM PDT

Article by Brandon Sharp

Hypnosis is a state of mind and consciousness characterized by extreme relaxing and over imagination. It may also be referred to as sleep of the nervous system. Self hypnosis also known as auto-hypnosis is a kind of therapy that is self induced whereby an individual normally makes self suggestions. Self hypnosis techniques are techniques that are used to take full control of ones mind in hypnotherapy.

Under this technique a person tries to increase suggestibility. When in such a situation, one has higher chances of taking, hearing and using suggestions. In a bid to do this, an individual has to learn to take full control of the mind. Since self hypnosis is a way of influencing oneself, learning to take full control of the mind helps one to fully influence the body muscles without straining the brain.

Before starting this therapy, there are some things that one needs to put into consideration. Firstly, one should set and plan to achieve a goal by the end of the session. Secondly, he should choose appropriate positive affirmations and select the best. Memorizing the affirmation is important to ensure it sticks in the mind so that the mind can focus. Having positive thoughts of the anticipated results is also important.

One needs deep relaxation and thus a comfortable position would be recommended. This can be done using a comfortable chair or taking a comfy position where you can sit in a relaxed manner. This aids in relaxing the muscles and this is very desirable. Also avoid as much as possible lying on your back since you might just fall asleep before you are done.

Stating the purpose of your session is also important. This simply means knowing what you want to achieve at the end of the session. This helps you to gauge yourself and to see whether within the duration you have stipulated you will be able to accomplish whatever you have set.

In this exercise, it is also important to have a schedule that will fit into your daily program. One has to know the duration of ti! me that is to be spent during the exercise. It is important to choose a duration that will be enough for you to accomplish what you have planned. This is to ensure that you do not have to leave the exercise before you are done. Since it might take a couple of days, one can have a short daily program set specifically for the therapy.

Another important thing is to do away with any distractions. This could be in terms of electronics or any other decorations around you. It is meant to allow one to have as much concentration as possible. This level of high concentration ensures that one attains his goal by the end of the short period.

Self hypnosis techniques have been widely used as stress management tools. They are more practical and cheaper as a hypnotist does not have to be present. They are very helpful in body relaxation and stress management.

How to kill a thought (in a good way): more on mindfulness

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 09:00 AM PDT

A friend recently said to me, "I often feel like my thoughts are hammers, and they keep on hammering down on this thing known as my brain." This is a pretty apt description of how a lot of people feel every day; I've certainly experienced it.

I've written, here and there, about how the brain copes and how to dial down the background level of stress. But an even more fundamental question is how to deal with the negative, or otherwise undesirable, thoughts we have, on a moment-to-moment basis.

In other words, when just you and your brain are alone together, how do …

The Path Of Action (KARMA YOGA):

1. Consists of learning how to 'be' and to perceive and relate to the world during the performance of a particular type skill 2. East

"Whether someone believes something or not, believer or non-believer, as long as you are a member of the human family, you need warm human feeling, warmhearted feeling. The question of world peace, the question of family peace, the question of peace between wife and husband, or peace between parents and children, everything is dependent on that feeling of love and warmheartedness."

Irritated? Annoyed? Stressed? Don't Scratch That Itch - Meditate

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 06:00 AM PDT

Article by Willie Horton

Copyright (c) 2009 Willie Horton

I constantly tell my clients that meditation is like your life in miniature - in other words, everything you encounter during meditation mirrors your daily life.

So, for example, during meditation, your conscious mind will distract you - with an average of 50,000 random thoughts whizzing through it, it's bound to! If you let those random thoughts simply pass on during meditation, you learn how to be more focused during the ordinary day, when you really want to and need to concentrate on the things you have to do - to do them to the best of your ability.

Again, what if you're having a bad session of meditation - as a lot of my clients tell me "I can't get into it the way we did during the two-day workshop"? Well, if you can avoid getting annoyed with yourself during meditation, you will develop your ability to stay balanced and calm when you're having a bad day at work, when things aren't going your way - or where something that might otherwise seem like the end of the world has just happened. Learn not to react to bad stuff during meditation and you will not react to the crap that life throws at us regularly. As a result, you learn how to act.

Then, of course, some of my clients get all excited about getting really deeply into flow during meditation. Fine, I say, but, just like a bad session, the good session passes too! Don't get hooked on it - that's not the purpose of meditation. The purpose of meditation is to discipline your mind - remember the normal mind is unruly, all over the place. The purpose of meditation is to gain control of your mental capacity - not to have a good time. So, just as you learn, through meditation not to react to a good session, so, in your everyday life, you become more balanced, not spaced out with joy when something good happens - because just like the crap in life, the good stuff arises and passes away as well.

In meditation, all manner of things can want us to join in in their little drama. Noise can ! be a maj or distraction - but only if you let it, because listening to and hearing noise during meditation can be one of the most effective ways of gaining control of your mind. Again, your body will start acting up - during a workshop a few weeks back I asked the group to start their meditation in a sitting position that they wouldn't have to change during the exercise. The mere suggestion that I wanted them to stay completely still resulted in all kinds of shuffling and bodily rearranging - we all thought one of the guys had started dancing, he was moving so much. After we discussed the insanity of allowing your mind play tricks on you like that, the second session was perfectly still - everyone got the message, everyone understood that you choose whether to be distracted or not - exercise the choice during meditation - it gets really to exercise the choice between mindless reaction and real action during our everyday lives.

I also mentioned to the group that, being adults, they could choose whether or not to focus all of their attention on a particular area of their body - one area at a time. I mentioned to them that, during one of my recent one-to-one sessions, I had told my client, Peter, that if, as I had asked him, he focused all of his attention on the top of his head, he would not have scratched his nose! Understand? He should not have even noticed that there was an itch, if all of his attention was where he had decided to focus it. If you learn not to scratch the itch during meditation, something really interesting happens - the itch passes away! Like every minor irritation in our ordinary lives, the itch simply arises and passes away. But, boy do we let minor irritations become major ones.

Just after the group session that I mentioned a moment ago, one of the guys, Paul, got a 'phone call from his wife. She explained that their because their daughter was not well enough to go sailing with her school that afternoon, the school's principal had banned the child from going on a theatre trip tha! t evenin g. The kind of injustice that sends parents into spasm! She asked Paul to get onto the school and sort the teacher out - and, believe you me, Paul is the kind of guy that not only would have no problem doing that, he'd positively relish it.

But, Paul decided not to get involved in the school principal's little drama - as he said to his wife, the teacher would find some other way of getting at their daughter - sooner or later. To quote Paul directly, he said "I'm not going to scratch that itch!" You and I know plenty of people who are, literally, only itching for you to get involved in their dramas! Don't we? One of my clients calls them energy vampires - they suck you in and bleed you dry. But, if you learn not to scratch the itch in meditation, you learn not to react to that nonsense in everyday life - let them pass - just like the itch, they'll go away if you don't give them any energy.

Your energy - your mental and spiritual energy - is yours. Yours to master, yours to focus and direct, yours to give freely in taking appropriate action in everyday life - yours to deny to those who would wish you to react - yours to conserve and refocus when outside events distract you.

Learn, through meditation, how to harness and focus your energy - and that ability will become an integral part of your everyday life, changing you from a reactive normal 'not all there' person, who can only muster up 1% of their energy, into a cool, calm, focused person with presence. What you learn in meditation and apply in daily life, will change your daily life - dramatically.

A misapprehension of Buddhism

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 06:00 AM PDT

Generally speaking, Theravada sect of Buddhism promotes a positive doctrine of Anattâ or in Sanskirt Anatman (lit. not-the-self).  This means that there is no real Attâ or self that transcendes the Five Aggregates or pañca-khandha.  Man, essentially, has no self.  Each aggregate, if we carefully examine each one, contains no Attâ.  If I look within my psychophysical organism, according the Buddha, I will find nothing resembling a self of Attâ.  I am just a cluster of impermanence and suffering that has no real self.

Such a view of the self is, however, wrong.  It serves to hide the Buddha's real strategy: that we must not identify our Attâ or self with what is conditioned; with what is impermanent and suffering, this being the Five Aggregates that make up our psychophysical organism.  Keeping this before us, these words of the Buddha make perfect sense.

"But without clinging to what is impermanent, suffering, and subject to change, could one regard anything thus: 'This is mine, thing I am, this is my self.'

"No, venerable sir" (S. iii. 181-82).

The temporal nature of our psychophysical organism should preclude us from claiming it as our real self.  Although I am aware of the aggregates form, feeling, perception, habitual tendencies and consciousness, I also know that I am not anyone of them.  Of each one I reflect:  This is not mine, this I am not, this is not my self (na me so Attâ)."  This is underscored when the Buddha says the following:

"But monks, an instructed disciple of the pure ones...taking count of the true men...well trained in the dhamma of the true men, regards material shape as: 'This is not mine, this am I not, this is not my self;' he regards feeling as:  'This is not mine, this I am not, this is not my  self;' he regards perception as:  'This is not mine, this I am not, this is not my  self;' he regards the habitual tendencies as:  'This is not mine, this I am not, this is not my  self;' he regards consciousness as:  'This is not mine, this I am not, this is not my  self.'  And also he regards whatever is see, heard, sensed, cognised, reached, looked for, pondered by the mind as:  'This is not mine, this I am not, this is not my  self'"(M. i. 136).

Like this disciple, we can be aware of material shape or form.  But does our awareness of materialial shape, etc., mean there is no self as a witness to the aggregates?  According to the Buddha,

"The self (in thee), man, knows what is true or false.  Surely the noble Witness, sir, the Self, you do misjudge, in that when sin is there you do conceal the Self within the self"  (A. i. 149, trans. I.B. Horner).

Only my Attâ or self, as the noble Witness, can know the aggregates are false.  It can also know that it is not anyone of them.  It is also fair to say that it is not the Five Aggregates that can know truth or falsity.  In addition, we learn from the Dhammapada (380) , the self is lord of the self (attâ hi attano natho); in addition, the self is the refuge of the self (attâ hi attano gati).  In this light, the Attâ is really independent or the same, relies on itself—not the Five Aggregates.

The Theravada sect, for the most part, has misapprehended the Buddha's real teaching.  The Buddha did not teach a positive Anattâ or No-Self doctrine.

Meditation Is Not Just for Hippies

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 05:00 AM PDT

Article by Alex E. Campain

Meditation Is Not Just for HippiesWhen most people hear talk of meditation, they envision pot-smoking hippies with long dreadlocks, chanting Buddhists with saffron robes, or soul-searching New Agers with muddle-headed notions about reality.

Anyone who wishes to promote the therapeutic and scientific benefits of regular meditation sessions faces an uphill battle against a pervasive view of meditation that has pretty much been cemented with caricatures involving effeminate men and ditzy women. In this short article, we will examine what Western medicine has to say aboutmeditation, and we will offer a few simple, practical guidelines on how best to begin the practice of meditation. Do not fear -- you will not need to go under the wing of some guru with a funny accent, nor will you need to invest in incense or expensive mats. Meditation is something the modern man or woman can do for personally verifiable benefits, including a significant reduction in the amount of stress experienced in a world that is daily becoming more complex andconfusing.

Meditation is no stranger to Western medicine. In any modern hospital, meditative practices are encouraged in patients to reduce the effects of stress, such as a weakened immune system. The medical community has reached almost unanimous agreement on the idea that psychological stress has direct and measurable negative effects on the physical body. It has been observed that meditation may in fact be a natural sedative or anesthetic on par with milder drugs (though it would be most unwise to try to meditate your way through trauma surgery!). Meditation has been shown to have favorable effects on heart rate, blood pressure, respiration, metabolism, brain-wave state, and many other physiological processes.

Medical studies of meditation go back decades. Dr. Herbert Benson, of no less a prestigious medical center than Harvard Medical School, paved the way in the '70s with his acclaimed book The Relaxation Response, a landmark study on the power of medi! tation t o combat and counteract the effects of stress. Anyone who is skeptical of the physiological benefits of regular meditation would do wellto pick up a copy of his book (and even some of his later books) foran eye-opening reading experience.

Also in the '70s, the Australian psychiatrist Ainslie Meares published an article in the Medical Journal of Australia about the regression of cancer following a program of prolonged meditation. Add his best-selling book Relief Without Drugs to your reading list.

In more recent times, the neurophysiologist Dr. James Austin published his book Zen and the Brain, which illustrated how Zen meditation has observable effects on the circuitry of the brain. Medical imaging technology has confirmed this.

These findings are not the work of pseudo-academics or quacks on the fringe of modern medicine. If you still need convincing, consider the 2006 article from Harvard Medical School, which reported how meditation increases gray matter and slows down the aging of the brain.

So how do you take the first steps on the road to seeing what meditation has to offer? It is important first to disabuse yourself of the many, often contradictory, spiritual and metaphysical notions surrounding the practice of meditation.

You do not need to convert to a new religion to enjoy thestress-reducing benefits of regular meditation sessions.

Simply find yourself a quiet place where you can remain undisturbed for thirty or so minutes a day. You may choose either to sit upright in a comfortable chair or to lie down on a cozy couch. Begin by closing your eyes and taking a few deep breaths. This will aid in quietening surface mental chatter. Then work from your toes to your scalp, imagining each part of your body releasing itsstress and tension. This whole process should take around five minutes. If you feel a numbing or heavy sensation as you drift into a higher state of relaxation, do not worry -- this is normal. Next you have to concentrate on one specific thing to the! exclusi on of all else. Favorite choices include your breathing, your navel, a mental word (known as a mantra), or a visualized object.

You may even wish to concentrate on nothing in particular and merelylet your mind empty itself of its own accord. The last thing to note is that it is important not to fight intruding thoughts -- simply release them calmly.

As time goes by, reaching a state of mental tranquility will become easier andeasier. You will be a different person.

Mount Putuo

"No place is better than the West Lake in terms of the combined beauty of mountains and lakes; by the same token, no place is better than Mount Putuo in terms of the combined beauty of mountains and the sea." Mount Putuo is often compared to the West Lake of Hangzhou and Mount Putuo is said to be the Remotest Part of Heaven, the Farthest Corner of the Sea, the Shangri-La, the Penglai Wonderland and the Buddhist Kingdom on the Sea. The "fascination of the sea, the mystery of the mountains and the auspiciousness of the Buddha"are the words of Mount Putuo's fascinating beauty. The Five Wonders of Mount Putuo are the golden beach, exotic rocks, sound of the pounding waves, and the mirage.

Putuo Mountain is situated on an island of Zhoushan Archipelago, Hangzhou Bay, Zhejiang Province. It has been reputed as Sea-Heaven Buddha Kingdom for a long time. This mountain and Wutai Mountain in Shanxi Province, Emei Mountain in Sichuan Province, and Jiuhua Mountain in Anhui Province are called Four Famous Mountains of China's Buddhism. Principal temples on Putuo Mountain include Puji Temple, Fayu Temple, and Huiji Temple, which are the largest ones among more than 20 extant temples in China.

Putuo Mountain Scenic Resort, with a land area of 41.95 square kilometers, consists of Putuo Mountain Island, Luojia Island, huosha Island, Xiaoshandong Island and the southeastern part of Zhujiajian Island. Putuo Mountain Island is 8.6 kilometers from north to south, 3.5 kilometers from west to east, covering an area of 12.5 square kilometers. Putuo Mountain is a part of Cathaysian. Since the Boyang Ice Age of early Pleistocene epoch, it was greatly affected by the climatic exchange of heat and cold and by the tectonic movement as well. Afterwards, there happened separation and reunification with the continent for several times.

Almost the whole island is covered with welded volcanic rhyolite granite from extruded during the first circle of the prime period of Jurassic Epoch. Because of long period of ti! de scour ing, wind and wave beating, corrosion of marine organisms, palisades upraising and collapsing, a peculiar geological structure was formed, the same with the natural abrasion and marine geomorphic, all of which are bestowed the value for appreciation. It is in the subtropical marine monsoon zone, warm and humid, with clear monsoon, no extremes of heat and cold. In this area, it is characterized by two systems of terrestrial organism with the greater variety.

Around this scenic resort, it is rich in the marine organism resources with 1163 species, ten and more categories, among which there are 194 species of plankton, 493 of benthic animals, 118 of benthic plant, and 358 of swimming animals. Besides, it's also rich in terrestrial coastal plant, including 50 species of 19 brake categories, 14 of 7 gymnosperm categories, 800 and more of 102 angiospenn categories, 108 of herbage, 28 of wooden vine, 118 of 41 bryophyte categories.

Buddhism on Putuo Mountain started at the end of Tang Dynasty, with all the temples and nunneries mainly dedicated to Bodhisattva Guanyin enthronement as its basic feature. In the Song Dynasty, imperial governments often appropriated funds and granted presents to Putuo Mountain, resulting in the gradual enlargement of Buddhist Mountain. In the heyday of Guanyin worship on Putuo Mountain, there were 219 temples and nunneries in all. According to Mahayana doctrine, Guanyin is ranked at the fist place. Her good faith of helping the poor, saving the suffering and infinitely merciful has been deep- rooted in the minds of ordinary people. Belief in Guanyin, as a most popular belief, has won the hearts of billions of followers around the world. Moreover, Putuo Mountain is closely connected to Guanyin, which people can find in the varied forms of culture such as architecture, sculpture, books and drawings, prose and essay, music, tablet engraving, stone carving, Guanyin traditional days, fork customs, tails and the designation of scenic spots. Thus, the unique Gunayin Culture com! es into being. Up to date, pilgrims in great number have shoaled to Putuo Mountain every year from Japan, Korea, Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia.

The architectural style of the temples and nunneries on Putuo Mountain is a typical model of Qing Dynasty. The integral unity of the Buddhist building stresses the religious theme "Worshipping the Sacred", patterned with the three large monasteries as its main parts, many temples and nunneries surrounding around. As an after math, "Sacred Buddhist Land" has been formed characterized with an island resort. Meanwhile, temples and nunneries are arranged in accordance with the shape of hill, or in contrast with the scenic landscape, which provides as a representative example of the perfect integration of architecture and environment in view of its close attachment to nature and harmonious accord with surroundings. The rare Duobao Pagoda, built at the end of the Yuan dynasty, was made of the rocks from Taihu Lake. This three-storied pagoda in treasure-box shape of Indian style, apart from the frescos and relief sculptures, is peerless in existence

On the 19th day of the second, sixth and ninth month, grand religious ceremonies are held to commemorate Guanyin's birthday, Pravrajana, and enlightenment. Buddhist followers and tourists from China and abroad gather here, making Putuo Mountain a particularly popular tourist destination. Its numerous attractions include Foding Mountain, Pantuo Rock, Chaoyin Cave, Nine-Dragon Wall, cliff sculptures, and more than 30 temples, such as Puji Temple, Fayu Temple and Huiji Temple, which are representative of the early Qing Dynasty architecture.

Raising your Vibration - How to Bring Greater Light into Your Life

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 01:00 AM PDT

Article by Mashubi Rochell

At this time on the Earth, many souls are now entering a new phase of life that is offering the opportunity for greater spiritual expansion. For some this happens by apparent chance, for others through choice. Some souls enter a time of spiritual expansion after a long period of ordeal where very little light could be seen or felt for a very long time.

When a soul is ready to step forward in a more significant way upon the spiritual path, there arises a greater longing for light and for God's love. We begin to listen to inner guidance and intuition more carefully, paying more attention to our dreams and to other levels of reality beyond the physical. At this time it becomes a priority to bring all parts of our lives into greater alignment with the Divine source of light and love.

At this time on the Earth, there are many new opportunities for spiritual expansion and development which were not available even 20 years ago. The rapid acceleration of spiritual consciousness in humanity as a whole has made possible a new level of spiritual transformation for individuals, couples, families, groups and even nations. The growing presence of greater spiritual light on the Earth has created a new atmosphere that is increasingly permeable to the spiritual realms, making access to the higher dimensions more and more possible for all souls, even those with no previous experience with a spiritual awakening process.

Beloved ones, there are many ways that you can invite greater light into your daily life, by consciously creating a sacred atmosphere in your home, by releasing yourself from objects, energies and emotions that no longer serve you, and by choosing to align yourself on a daily basis with the Divine and with your own divine being. Here are three practical suggestions for beginning to consciously raise your vibration as you enter into a new phase of spiritual life.

Purify your living space - Go through your home with fresh eyes. Look at everything anew, and make a conscious! decisio n to let go of objects, clothing, clutter and other items that do not reflect the new vibration of light that you wish to invite into your life. Clean everything well, open the windows, and let in the fresh air. Notice how things feel, and let go of objects that do not feel good to you. As you do this, affirm this as a sacred action that reflects your inner choices as well. See and feel old emotions, energies and pain that you have carried releasing into the fresh air of a new day.Create a sacred space in your home - Create a place in your home that will become an altar and a sanctuary of light. Choose a place in your home that will not be used for anything else. Start with a small table, a candle and a few carefully chosen sacred items, along with flowers or other sacred objects. Once you have arranged this in a way that feels good to you, pray and meditate regularly here. Your altar will take on a vibration of light that will provide you spiritual support, light and peace. You will be able to go to your altar during times of difficulty, and the light there will offer comfort and peace. You will emerge feeling restored and strengthened, ready to move on to the next step.Align yourself with the Divine - One of the most important and helpful practices to open the communication between your embodied human self and your divine spiritual being is through the Practice of Alignment. Each day, spend a few minutes in front of your altar at the same time if possible, breathing and aligning all parts of your being with the divine light of God. Instructions for this Practice are available as a five minute audio recording from Light Omega, which also comes with a guided meditation. The more you do this, the stronger your connection with God's light becomes.

These three simple steps will begin to open the pathway to greater light in your life. As God's light grows within you, new vistas will open, and new possibilities for transformation and healing. As God's light continues to expand upon the Earth, ! more and more souls will discover the new opportunities for living a sacred life within God's infinite realm of possibilities. May God's light bless you and guide you in all ways.

What the Buddha Left Behind

Article by Pablo Antuna

The death of the Buddha left his followers with a difficult problem. What was left after the Buddha died that could fill the void left by his absence?

For those who wanted to venerate or to worship the Buddha, the Buddha left behind what was called the form body. When the Buddha died, his disciples took his body and cremated it. When the cremation was over, they took the relics of the cremation and distributed them to a number of lay disciples. These were set up as the focus of worship.

Over time, any physical representation of the Buddha came to play the same role, including objects that the Buddha touched, places he visited, and even images of the Buddha.

Around the third or fourth century of the common era, one of the most important shrines in the whole Buddhist world was a shrine that was set up in what now is Pakistan. This shrine was set up to hold and to worship the Buddha's begging ball.

Any object that was associated with the Buddha was potentially a focus of worship. These objects represented, in one way or another, the form body of the Buddha, his physical presence in this world.

For people who wanted to follow the Buddha's example, he left behind what was called his Dharma. His teaching. The Dharma for Buddhists is beyond the gods. The gods arise and pass away. But the Dharma is eternal.

The traditional summary of the Buddha's teaching is given in four categories, the so called Four Noble Truths:

The Truth of Suffering (Dukkha)The Arising of Suffering (Samudaya)The Cessation of Suffering (Nirodha)The Truth of the Way (Mārga) that leads to the cessation of suffering. Some say that if you understand the Truth of Suffering you understand all of the Four Noble Truths by implication. The truth of suffering is expressed in the simple claim that All is Suffering. This phrase posses a problem for us. It's not easy to interpret.

If you know Buddhist people, you know that the Buddhist tradition is not filled with sadness. It's not a depressive downbeat t! radition . In many respects, it has a kind of lightness. Buddhism is light, is buoyant, is easy.

How do you get from this claim, the claim that all is suffering, to the buoyancy and lightness of Buddhist experience? Everything is suffering in one or more of three ways.

The first of these types of suffering is called Dukkha-dukkha. Suffering-suffering. The obvious suffering in situations where things cause you physical or mental pain.

The second kind of suffering is called Viparinama-dukkha. Suffering due to transformation or change.

The third kind of suffering is Sankhara-dukkha. Suffering due to conditioned states.

These concepts need a detailed study. To know more about them, visit my blog through the link in my Bio. There you will find everything about Buddhism. Its history, beliefs, the life of the Buddha and the different schools.

Why Really Hungry People Go for Starchy Foods

When finally given a chance to eat after hours of fasting, people tend to reach for high-calorie, starchy foods over nutritious foods, a new study finds.

In the study, 75 percent of participants placed on an 18-hour fast started their next meal with a starch (such as French fries) or a protein (such as chicken) rather than a vegetable, the researchers found. In contrast, the majority of participants who did not fast beforehand started the meal with a vegetable.

The researchers also found that over the meal, participants ate the most calories from the food they consumed first, compared with other foods on their plates, according to the study published today in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine.

The findings may explain why people who are "food insecure," or who experience uncertainly regarding whether they will be able to get enough food to meet their households' needs, are paradoxically at a higher risk for obesity, Amy Yaroch and Courtney Pinard, both of the Gretchen Swanson Center for Nutrition in Omaha Neb., write in an editorial accompanying the study.

"Food-insecure populations also experience extended periods of hunger, and thus may be more prone to over-consume calorie dense, nutrient-poor foods," Yaroch and Pinard wrote.

Starch over vegetables

Studies on animals have examined the amount of calories consumed after fasting, but not what types of foods animals tend to chose first.

In the new study, Brian Wansink, director of the Food and Brand Lab at Cornell University, and colleagues randomly assigned 128 college students to either an 18-hour fast (from 6:00 pm at night until noon the next day) or no fast.

At lunch after the fast, participants were offered a buffet with their choice of two starches (dinner rolls and French fries), two proteins (chicken and cheese), and two vegetables (carrots and green beans). Scales in the tables measured how much food participants served themselves, and video cameras recorded the order in which participants ate the food.

Thirty-five percent of participants in the fasting group began their meal with a starch, compared with 13 percent of those who did not fast.

Just 25 percent of participants in the fasting group began their meal with a vegetable, compared with 56 percent of those who did not fast.

Participants consumed bout 47 percent more calories from the first food they ate compared with other foods.

The findings also suggest hospitals and cafeterias that make meals for food-deprived people (such as those who have fasted before a surgery) should find ways to make healthy foods more visible and enticing on the plate, and reduce the serving size of starchy foods, the researchers said.

Food insecurity and obesity

Other studies have found a link between obesityand food insecurity, Yaroch and Pinard said.

However, the new study was small and it's not clear whether the findings apply to other populations.

"This study opens the door for further research to be conducted using a more diverse study population (eg, low income, racially diverse individuals from across the lifespan), which could have further implications for the study of factors related to both food insecurity and obesity," Yaroch and Pinardwrote.

Pass it on: People tend to eat starchy foods first after fasting.
