ORLANDO — Sleep may be more important for memory storage in young people than it is in older adults, a new study suggests.

In the study, young people performed better on a memory test following a night's sleep, indicating that sleep was helpful in storing their memories.

However, the same was not true for older adults, who performed about the same on the memory test regardless of whether they had slept before the test.

The findings add to a growing body of research on the role of sleep in memory storage, also known as memory consolidation. While earlier studies have suggested sleep does indeed benefit memory consolidation, nearly all of these studies have been conducted in college-age people, said study researcher Michael Scullin, a researcher at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta.

"We are seeing that sleep is essential to memory in younger adults. It doesn't seem to be [as important] in older adults. That probably isn't a good thing," Scullin said.

The findings suggest that, in some way, sleep has a role in the general decline in memory seen in older adults, Scullin said.

Sleep and memory

For his study, Scullin asked 57 young adults (ages 18 to 22) and 41 older adults (ages 60 to 84) to complete a memory task. The task involved learning to associate pairs of words — for instance, if the word pair was "channel, result" participants would have to recall the word "result" when shown the word "channel."

Participants learned the words in the morning or the evening, and returned 12 hours later for a memory test.

Those who learned the words in the evening got to go home and sleep before their test. While they slept, they wore a headband device that monitored brain waves, and determined stages of sleep.

Although people in both age groups got about the same amount of total sleep, older adults got about half as much slow-wave sleep — a stage of deep sleep that has been shown to be important for memory consolidation.

Additionally, the results showed an association between the amount of slow-wave sleep and memory test scores in the younger group, but there was no such link in the older group, Scullin said.

Improving memory?

Despite the findings, the solution to improving memory in older adults might not be as simple as finding a way to increase their slow-wave sleep, Scullin said.

Scullin said it is not clear why older adults don't show the same memory benefit from sleep as young people. It could be due to changes in the brain, or the way brain areas communicate with each other, Scullin said.

Researchers need to figure out what is changing in older adults so that they can fix it, Scullin said.

"It makes sense that sleep should be linked to memory in younger adults. And we want to get that link working again in older adults," Scullin said.

Scullin presented his study here today (Aug. 2) at the American Psychology Association meeting. The work is currently being reviewed for publication.

Mind-Reading is No Longer the Stuff of Fiction and Fantasy

The concept of mind-reading, telepathy, or the transference of thoughts from person to person without any direct communication between them, has been in existence for only a little over a century. The word 'telepathy' was coined by Frederick W. H. Myers in 1882 and has remained a concept with no scientific proof it could ever occur. During experiments, the subjects, who could supposedly communicate telepathically, would give subtle, nonverbal cues, such as tapping out Morse code with coins. Though Myers was wrong about mind-reading being possible through so-called psychic abilities, reading minds, nevertheless, is possible through the use of modern technology. Mind-reading is no longer fiction: it is a fact.

As a fanciful notion, mind-reading technology has been around a long time. In the year 1919, a whimsical article appeared in The Syracuse Herald entitled "This Machine Records All Your Thoughts". The imaginary device would record one's thoughts as fluctuating waves on a long roll of paper, similar to how a seismograph records earth tremors. What is more absurd about such a device is that a secretary had to interpret the waves scrawled on the roll and type out the corresponding words. It would seem more logical to simply dictate to the secretary the sentences one wanted to write.

Another early reference to mind-reading technology appeared in Isaac Asimov's book "I, Robot", which was published in 1950. A robot capable of reading people's minds decides to only tell people what he knows they want to hear instead of answering truthfully. The scenario of the robot lying was used to demonstrate some of the possible ways Asimov's three laws of robotics could be altered. These laws were his idea for general principles robots should be programmed to have.

Though Asimov's mind-reading robot is fictional, mind-reading technology is not. In 2007, a team of neuroscientists performed an experiment using a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanner. Volunteers were asked to decide! whether to add or subtract two numbers which were to later appear on a screen. Before the numbers appeared, each volunteer had a brain scan. Using the data obtained from the scans, the scientists could be used a special computer program to predict what choice each volunteer would make. The predictions were correct 70 percent of the time.

Another brain-scanning technology allows scientists to reconstruct images a person has seen. A team of researchers, at the University of California, Berkeley, headed by Jack Gallant, a neuroscientist, has conducted an experiment where they had participants view brief video clips from YouTube. Using advanced computer software, images seen in the brains of the participants could be reconstructed. A computer matched reconstructed images taken from the participants' brains with images from the YouTube videos. Though the reconstructed images looked blurry and more like modern art, they did resemble the images from the YouTube videos.

Reconstructing images from the brain is just the beginning of the technological mind-reading trend. Mind-reading applications are being sold at the Apple App Store. One application (or app) called "W.I.L.D." allows players to do activities such as extinguishing fires, walking through landscapes, and bending spoons. By using a special set of headphones that acts like an electroencephalograph (EEG) machine, brain activity is recorded and sent to a portable device, such as an iphone. The program can detect a change in brain activity, such as concentration or relaxation and used both states to control the games in the application.

Such technology, or similar technology, has potential for many other uses. One, in particular, is a wheelchair for disabled people who do not have the use of their arms. Toyota, a car manufacturer, and RIKEN, a research lab, have partnered to design and build an electric wheelchair that responds to thought commands. The user of the wheelchair wears a cap filled with sensors monitoring his or her brainw! aves. By ! thinking a clear and straightforward command such as "turn left" or "turn right" the user can navigate the wheelchair without touching a single control. This mind-reading technology is now being applied to the auto industry.

Researchers at EFPL in Switzerland are incorporating the technology of a mind-controlled wheelchair they created into a new project to build a computer system that can anticipate an automobile driver's intentions. If, for example, a driver wants to slow down for a turn, the car will begin to decelerate before the driver puts his or her foot on the break petal. According to Josรฉ del R. Millรกn, a leader of the research project, the reason for the project is to harmonize the driver/vehicle relationship for better efficiency.

Where technology progresses from here remains to be seen, but there are many possible outcomes for the future. One possible outcome might be a mind-reading computer interface for personal computers, phones, cars, and household appliances. Imagine waking up from sleep one morning and thinking, "Turn on the light". Instantly, the bedroom light glows to life. Once you have finished breakfast, you hop into your car and drive all the way to work without using the steering wheel, gas pedal, or breaks. As you step inside your office, you think, "Computer, turn on." Your desktop computer boots up and once it is ready, you mentally log on.

Another possibility is that the internet itself becomes a virtual reality network connecting billions of minds and machines together. By simply wearing a special cap over your head, and closing your eyes, you may be able to see a three-dimensional construct in your brain. You could access a search engine, send messages, watch three-dimensional movies, and explore virtual worlds in your mind. The cap would monitor your brain activity while simultaneously stimulating certain areas of your brain, such as the visual cortex, to create the virtual construct in your brain. The cap would be connected to a wireless network o! f compute! rs and other users. Thoughts and ideas could be shared instantly and with little or no difficulty. To leave the virtual world, you simply remove the cap and open your eyes.

The downside of such technology would be the likelihood that people would become addicted to it and would cease to function normally in the real world. Scientists are still learning about the brain and how it functions. Extended periods of stimulation by an electrical device and extensive amounts of time spent in a virtual reality simulation may have unforeseen, adverse effects on health. The implications of mind-reading technology may include a loss of mental privacy since your thoughts might be recorded and seen by many other individuals without your knowledge or consent. Whether this happens or not, mind-reading technology is being slowly introduced into society. It is no longer just the figment of a creative mind; mind-reading technology is a reality.

In summary, the concept of mind-reading technology has existed for a long time, but before the 2000s, mind-reading technology had been entirely fictional. Today, with modern computer software and brain scanners, scientists have developed mind-reading devices, or devices which read and interpret the activity of the brain. Such technology has much potential to enhance living standards, but also possesses the potential for causing harm. How scientists use their resources to effectively manage their creations will affect the future, positively or negatively. We can hope that they make wise decisions.

In another part of the world, a woman gets ready for her afternoon meditation session. She is at home, where she works as a telecommuter, and has been looking forward to the afternoon break. She enters her special meditation room and sits cross-legged on the comfy yoga mat in front of a small, tabletop altar. On the surface of the table she has placed a picture of a favorite Montana mountain lake, a small vase of fresh-cut flowers, a kitchen timer, and a small brass incense burner. In a personal ritual she has developed, she first starts the timer, set for 15 minutes. She takes a stick of her favorite Japanese incense - the good stuff, a little more expensive but well worth it - and carefully lights it. As she allows the smoke to slowly rise into the air of her little sanctuary, she gazes at the photograph and enters a state of relaxation. The lake picture evokes feel! ings of tranquility, inner peace, and majestic silence, and the incense reinforces these feelings. Soon she closes her eyes and meditates, clearing her mind of thoughts or letting them pass, watching her regular deep breathing. The timer goes off, and she is surprised as always how fast the timer goes by. She snuffs out the incense after enjoying a deep breath of the smoke, and goes back to work, refreshed.

Elsewhere, an older baby boomer couple in the autumn of their years, enter the local Catholic church for mass on a Sunday morning. They have been coming to this church for most of their life together, because they enjoy the ritualistic focus, the Latin liturgy and the traditional approach to worship. In this meditative state they participate in the liturgy, and as the smoke from the frankincense and myrrh rises to heaven, so do they - at least temporarily. What their priest doesn't know is that they have their own resin incense at home, and whenever they are in the mood for a little journey, they throw some grains on the charcoal, and go away for a while.

"The mind is the root from which all things grow.  It you can understand the mind, everything else is included. It's like the root of the tree.  All a tree's fruit and flowers, branches and leaves depend on its root.  If you nourish its root, a tree multiplies.  If you cut its root, it dies.  Those who understand the mind reach enlightenment with minimal effort.  Those who don't understand the mind practice in vain. Everything good and bad comes from your own mind. To find something beyond the mind is impossible" (Red Pine, The Zen Teaching of Bodhidharma, p. 77).

David Lane on "Why Science Works"

Check out David Lane's response to Don Salmon, who disagreed with some central points Lane and his wife made in their essay, "Mysticism's Version of Intelligent Design: A Critique of John Davidson's Projective Creationism."

I liked the essay a lot. Praised it in a blog post, "Devastating Critique of Radha Soami Satsang Beas lies." After Don Salmon left a comment on my post, I responded in my own fashion. 

Don Salmon: I think David wrote a very interesting article, which quite accurately (though unintentionally) reveals most of modern "science" to be a thoroughly metaphysical belief system. This is most clearly stated when he talks about "evidence" that consciousness is the result of material processes. When, as Alan Wallace tirelessly points out, there is not a single scientific method (since most cognitive scientists barely accept introspection as a valid method) to even detect consciousness (and even with introspection as currently practiced, its presence can only be detected directly in humans - which is why for more than a century scientists adhered to the truly bizarre claim that an animals - and for some, babies!! - were not conscious) anywhere in the universe.

The religiousity of David's "fundamaterialism" (philosopher Neal Grossman's marvelous phrase) comes out on almost every line of the article. I suspect the intense emotion behind the article has to do with David's past association with the same group that Davidson belonged (belongs?) to.

By the way, I did acknowledge in the IW forum that personally, at least for me at least, David always comes across in his writings as a really curious, caring fellow; so i hope nobody thinks I'm comparing him too closely to religious fundamentalists.

Me: don salmon, I don't get your point. There is plenty of evidence that consciousness is the result of material/physical processes. This could easily be demonstrated on you, or anyone else, including the most proficient guru/meditator/yogi in the world.

First, they are conscious. Then they're given anesthesia. Now they're unconscious. Dead to the world. Unresponsive. Ditto if they were hit over the head forcefully. Or suffered serious brain trauma.

Physical changes to the material brain result in clear alterations in consciousness, or the loss of consciousness. This isn't a "metaphysical" speculation. It is scientific fact.

By contrast, there is essentially zero evidence that human consciousness exists apart from the human brain, or survives bodily death. Even ESP studies, which sometimes show some positive results (to my understanding; I'm not an expert on this) are dealing with living subjects who have operating physical brains.

Maybe the brain has some super capabilities science currently doesn't know about. OK, this still would be the capability of the physical brain, operating in the material world. So your attempted putdown of David Lane has nothing behind it, in my opinion.

Why didn't you cite the parts of David's essay that you disagreed with, and offer up reasons for your disagreement? This would be a better approach than simply dismissing the entire essay for reasons that make no sense.

David Lane's own response to Don Salmon is much more sophisticated, detailed, and carefully reasoned.

But we seem to agree on a central issue: while scientific investigations of reality never can be 100% sure about anything, evidence can be gathered and considered which point toward the most probable explanations. Lane writes:

Science works (and advances) because it is rooted in trying to spot weaknesses or flaws or insufficiencies. It is in a way conscious map making, where the would-be cartographer is constantly surveying possible gaps in the best up to date topographies.

Undoubtedly there will be those who claim to be scientists who will try to cheat or pass off their results as scientific. But the great thing about science (and why it has had such a successful run) is that it is constantly open to correction. Nothing is sacred, not even the most cherished of ideas. No authority is beyond questioning. Einstein or Darwin or Hawking or Witten or whomever can be and has been wrong.

...And, interestingly, one of the reasons there can be progress in science is because researchers do hold certain positions and certain assumptions, but then they are required to "hang those out to dry" so that others may see where their particular ideas hold true and where they do not.

Science only works to the degree that it can withstand an onslaught of competition, where eventually (by trial and by error) the best explanations--even if only tentatively held--hold court until another and better theory emerges. Newton's understanding of gravity was quite a breakthrough for its time, but Einstein's theory was more comprehensive and explained hitherto inexplicable problems that Newtonian physics could not. Such is science and how it works over time.

Now we're in the realm of science. Discussion. Debate. Consideration of competing explanations. Challenging of dogmas. 

Mysteries abound.

We humans are nowhere close to knowing everything about anything, and much,much further from what is likely a dream which will never be fulfilled: knowing everything about everything. Searching is our nature. It's a large part of what defines us as Homo sapiens.

There's nothing wrong with dreaming, wondering what lies hidden over the horizon, exploring far-out possibilities. We just need to remember that science is the best way to distinguish facts from fantasies, reality from a wish.
