Using the Buddha's discourses correctly

In point of time, religious experience should come prior to religious interpretation but for the most part it doesn't.  Still, one cannot, so to speak, reverse engineer religious experience by  just reading the canon of Buddhism.    

Who takes up the Meditation path should understand that religious literature is only a standard like a plumb line by which to measure their progress towards spiritual awakening.  Underscoring this, religious literature cannot, of itself, awaken anyone as if reading a collection of the Buddha's discourses (sutra) given by the Buddha will suddenly awaken one from their deep sleep of ignorance.

On the opposite end, rejecting or not studying religious literature as if it were not a standard of experience is foolish.  (Those new to Buddhism fall into this category.)  How then can we know if our religious experience comports with the Buddha's own experience of awakening?  Without the plumb line of the Buddha's discourses we will never know if our peak religious experiences are authentic as far as Buddhism is concerned.  This becomes patently obvious when, for example, modern Meditations believe that awareness of the moment is enlightenment, or being in the here and the now, or just being aware.  Nowhere in the Meditation canon are such experiences said to be enlightenment.

When we use the Buddha's discourses as standard by which to measure our own spiritual experiences we are using the Buddha's discourses correctly.

Something which needs to be kept in mind is that the levels of yoga pranayama should be monitored by three things. 1. Do not do yoga pranayama less than 1 hour after eating or drinking lots of fluids. 2. Do not begin too early to add additional yoga pranayama (i.e. only do 14-16 cycles in the morning and evening). And add small amounts or yoga pranayama (cycles) every few months3. Do not retain or hold the breath. Likely the most powerful yoga pranayama is something which helps with abundance. This yoga pranayama like the counting method is something which incorporates both mental activity with physical breathing. In this yoga pranayama the key mental activity is to focus on the third eye. The third eye or sixth chakra is found at the root of the nose, where the nose meets the forehead. By focusing at this area and asking God for a raise, bonus, higher paying job, more sales, donations, or even wining in gambling/lottery, or dice, the mind will form the required steps needed to fulfill this manifestation or desire. Some yoga practitioners need this simple, but effective piece of equipment to balance when standing on one foot or when pushing up during positions like the downward dog. If you were just to look at the yoga board, you might not believe it to be very sophisticated, but it certainly helps you perform sophisticated moves during yoga. The backbending bench, which looks like an apostrophe turned on its side, also looks simple. It helps to get rid of back pain by opening up the heart and chest area when the body bends back over it. Some fitness gurus even say the bench can help relieve menstrual cramps. If you are using it for yoga moves, the bridge and fish poses are best supported by the bench.

Once you have decided which equipment works for you, it is time to think about yoga clothes. Because you do yoga in your home and at your own comfort level, you should know there are no special clothes required for you to perform yoga. You simply need to find what works to make you safe and comfortable. In general, clothing should not be too loose or too tight. You are searching for a right-sized form fit. Tank tops, t-shirts that fit the torso, headbands (or wristbands), and close-fitting pants are good choices. Jeans, baggy sweatshirts, loose skirts and any kind of shoes are not ideal. You want something that is not so loose that it prohibits your yoga moves, but also not so tight that your body cannot breathe. Here is a tip about materials: choose sweat absorbent clothes like spandex and avoid cotton, which gets too heavy and sticks to you when you sweat.

History of Yoga

The practise of yoga has a left a trail of imprints that span 5000 years of human evolution. Since its birth, the experience of yoga has been enjoyed worldwide. The sheer number of people who practise yoga is as staggering as the benefits to the spiritual and physical health of its followers. One perspective from which to view it can barely do it justice. The following is but an outline of the major influences on its development that will, hopefully, inspire the desire for a deeper understanding of yoga practise.

The Birth of YogaEvidence of early yoga has been unearthed from the ground in the Indus Valley of northern India. Archaeologists date the findings back to a period between 2500-1800 BC. The artefacts have been identified as a god and goddess culture surrounded by animals and referred to as Shiva. This discovery has been attributed with being one of the first forms of yoga.

Major Influences on the Development of Yoga1. SanskritThe language of yoga is Sanskrit, one of the oldest system of words in the world. Between 1800- 1000 BC, the Sanskrit -speaking Aryan people migrated from southern Russia into the Indus Valley. Their Sanskrit language continues to be used in yoga practise today.

2. TranscendenceVery early yoga was practised by spiritual leaders as a training ground for the grand union among the spirit, mind and body. Exploration of the mind, the whole self, and the collective consciousness was emphasized. It was the intention to transcend or leave the body behind in order to move beyond it. This wider realm of awareness gave people an improved sense of self and a deeper view of their role within the larger context of the whole world. This continues to be the belief held by many devoted followers.

3. JainismThe Jains introduced a strict moral code called ahimsa, which means non-harming. To facilitate transcendence, their yoga used extreme practices of fasting, breath control, and postures.

4. BuddhaThe 45 years Buddha spent teaching had a huge impact ! on the d evelopment of yoga. His input inspired a blend of religion and philosophy. His practical and non-violent guidance bridged the self-torture advocated by the Jains and the self-indulgence displayed in society. Buddha taught that suffering was due to desire, greed and delusion. His antidote was to practise stillness, focus on the present (mindful meditation) and strive to find serenity in where we are now.

5. PatanjaliPatanjali's belief system has been integrated either in part or as a whole by almost every form of yoga known today. He isolates eight progressive limbs of consciousness.

* Yama: ethics and restraint* Niyama: moral code of discipline* Asana: postures * Pranayama: breathing practices * Pratyahara: sense withdrawal* Dharana: concentration* Dhyana: meditation* Samadhi: ecstasy

6. Yoga in the West Early in the 20th century, yoga practise migrated west. The characteristics of eastern and western culture combined to produce a new and slightly different species of yoga. For the most part, yoga in the West has less emphasis on the spiritual inquiry of enlightenment and more on the value of physical fitness. The postures of asana help people to restore musculoskeletal dysfunction, reduce stress, and find fulfillment through exercise.

7. Western YogisParamahansa Yogananda introduced Hatha yoga to the United States. His yoga practise involves meditation, concentration, and energizing the body through asana and pranayama.

Bikram Choudhury brought hot yoga into the foray on the advice of his teacher, Bishnu Ghosh (younger brother of Paramahansa Yoganada). Bikram Yoga is practised at 105 degrees Fahrenheit and focuses on the discipline of specific vinyasa and poses.

K. Pattabhi Jois gave Ashtanga to western yoga. Ashtanga is known for its flow of movement sequences such as the sun salutations.

BKS Iyengar developed the most popular style of yoga in the world today. His mark is precision of alignment, the retention of poses and the use of props to assist with t! he prope r form.

The expanse of yoga defies any size of pigeon hole. So many variations offer anyone a healthier well-being within its embrace. Its benefits are limitless. To paraphrase the Dalai Lama, yoga should be part of the daily lives of every person.

Photos of my not-so-sacred meditation chamber

I figure it's time to prepare for my hoped-for veneration, exaltation, and worship as an enlightened godly being.

True, I don't believe in enlightenment or in God.

But why should this stop me from being worshipped? I founded this here Church of the Churchless. I preach about stuff all the time. I'm venerated in my own mind. Maybe the exaltation I feel toward myself will spread someday.

So in case someone ever builds a shrine to me, here's photos of the meditation chamber where my perfection becomes more perfect every morning.

I hereby give permission for it to be recreated in any artistic medium desired, including gold and other precious metals, so long as a large royalty check is delivered to me monthly. 

Meditation 1
My not-so-sacred Meditation Chamber was hewed out of a (usually) unused shower in a part of our house that was designed by the previous owner for an invalid mother-in-law who never lived there. I have to move my stuff out when someone comes to visit, as my daughter and granddaughter did this week. 

I cover up the shower nozzle with a curtain. I like the metaphor: how my already pure/pristine consciousness is becoming cleansed of even the most minute imperfections through my meditative surroundings. Details follow...

Meditation 3
I always bring in the sports page of the Oregonian to start off my contemplation of ultimate reality.

Today I learned that redshirt freshman Marcus Mariota's wait to be quarterback of the Oregon Ducks football team is over. When they beat USC in November and then win a national championship next year I will not only be even more divine, but also really happy.

The photograph of an evergreen tree growing among golden aspens is a symbol of something or other. I could tell you, but you wouldn't understand, so figure it out yourself. 

Meditation 4
I am a habitual highlighter and scribbler of profound thoughts in margins and bland end pages. These are my weapons. You can see my backups on the lower shelf. If an evil genius ever corners the market on highlighters, my unending spiritual evolution will be stalled, but not ended, for my upward (or downward?) progress is unstoppable. 

Meditation 5
Lastly, we see here the true keys to my exalted state of being: coffee and books. Caffeine and the printed non-fiction page serve as booster rockets which propel my unsoul into profound regions of reality during my 20 minutes of so of perfected meditation each morning.

(Methamphetamine probably would work even better than coffee, but I also love naps, so have to strike a balance between a heightened and lowered consciousness.)

So...behold! My not-so-sacred Meditation Chamber.
