Eve naturally grasped at the fruit and then was shamed and punished for having done so.

We experience this situation daily inside our own psyche. We are encouraged by our culture to keep ourselves comfortable, to be right, to possess things, to be better than others, to look good, to be admired. We are also told that we should feel ashamed of our selfishness, that we are flawed for being so self-centered, sinful when we are indulgent.

Most mainstream religions—Judeo-Christian, Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, Confucian—teach that our wanting, passion, and greed cause suffering. While this certainly can be true, their blanket teachings about the dangers of desire often deepen self-hatred. We are counseled to transcend, overcome or somehow manage the hungers of our physical and emotional being. We are taught to mistrust the wildness and intensity of our natural passions, to fear being out of control.

Equating spiritual purity with elimination of desire is a common misunderstanding I also see in students on the Buddhist path. This is not just a contemporary issue. The struggle to understand the relationship between awakening and desire in the context of the Buddhist teachings has gone on since the time of the Buddha himself.

A classical Chinese Zen tale brings this to light: An old woman had supported a monk for twenty years, letting him live in a hut on her land. After all this time she figured the monk, now a man in the prime of life, must have attained some degree of enlightenment. So she decided to test him.

Rather than taking his daily meal to him herself, she asked a beautiful young girl to deliver it. She instructed the girl to embrace the monk warmly—and then to report back to her how he responded. When the girl returned, she said that the monk had simply stood stock still, as if frozen.

The old woman then headed for the monk's hut. What was it like, she asked him, when he felt the girl's warm body against his? With some bitterness he answered, "Like a withering tree on a rock in winter, utterly without warmth." Furious, the old woman threw him out and burned down his hut, exclaiming, "How could I have wasted all these years on such a fraud."

To some the monk's response might seem virtuous. After all, he resisted temptation, he even seemed to have pulled desire out by the roots. Still the old woman considered him a fraud. Is his way of experiencing the young girl—"like a withering tree on a rock in winter"—the point of spiritual practice? Instead of appreciating the girl's youth and loveliness, instead of noting the arising of a natural sexual response and its passing away without acting on it, the monk shut down. This is not enlightenment.

I have worked with many meditation students who have gotten the message that experiencing desire is a sign of being spiritually undeveloped. While it is true that withdrawing attention from certain impulses can diminish their strength, the continued desire for simple pleasures—delicious foods, play, entertainment or sexual gratification—need not be embarrassing evidence of being trapped in lower impulses.

Those same students also assume that "spiritual people" are supposed to call on inner resources as their only refuge, and so they rarely ask for comfort or help from their friends and teachers. I've talked with some who have been practicing spiritual disciplines for years, yet have never let themselves acknowledge that they are lonely and long for intimacy.

As the monk in the Zen tale shows, if we push away desire, we disconnect from our tenderness and we harden against life. We become like a "rock in winter." When we reject desire, we reject the very source of our love and aliveness.

Way back in 1983 I had my first encounter with a real human brain. After a year of dissecting a formalin-preserved body in second year anatomy, our class was treated to a morning of fresh brains to slice up.

The power of the human mind is immense, the wonder of this structure is beyond measure and I have to admit that I finally have come to acknowledge that the mind is indeed beautiful.

Your brains control the entire physical functioning of your body; it has the capacity to reason, to think, to feel and to create. We may speak of the power and wonder of the human mind, but its beauty is so apparent when we begin to delve into its mystery.

Notwithstanding the accomplishments of modern science, there is an enormous amount that we as yet do not understand and I will not even attempt to delve into this vast realm.

Rather, let me share with you what we are capable of accomplishing with this powerhouse, other than exercising it with thoughts on how stressed, underpaid, overweight, unappreciated, overwhelmed and tired we are.

Your thoughts, desires, likes, dislikes, fears, judgments, prejudices, hopes and aspirations (all going on in your headspace) make up your worldview. The importance of these perceptions is that they not only affect your mind but also your body. They become encoded into your physical self. Every time you have a thought, a chemical messenger in the form of a nerve protein (neuropeptide) is produced. When your thoughts are critical, angry, judgmental and bitter, the nerve protein produced actually depresses your immune system. When your thoughts are loving, empowering and positive, the neuropeptide produced has the capacity to boost immunity, in turn activating healing and wellbeing.

This has allowed us to understand why chronically depressed people are four times more likely to become ser! iously ill, or why following retirement the incidence of cancer or a sudden heart attack quadruples in men.

The mental state (what goes on in that rubbery grey blob) gets converted into chemicals that can either heal or destroy the body. The reality is that the mind and body are not separate entities, but one complete design. Viewed through the lens of 21st century science, your thought patterns and emotions affect your body as clearly as obesity and physical fitness. The brain is the source of these states and is the gateway to all the organs of the body.

The real complaints and maladies of our 'age', including fatigue, exhaustion, and depression often caused by huge overload and stress, are really intense symptoms of the mind-body channel. Yes, there are many physical illnesses and conditions that may have nothing to do with the mind, but how your mind processes the experience can worsen or help heal the condition. This does not mean you can control your 80 000 thoughts a day …#34; that's impossible. Nevertheless, you are able to transform some of the ramblings of your mind.

By utilizing a simple technique to quiet what I call the F-ing state (fast, furious, frazzled, frenetic, frenzy), you can begin to achieve not only peace of mind but also a robust body. In fact, it is also the basis of sexual fantasy and you can use it to enhance your libido. Haven't you heard that joke, what is a woman's most erotic zone? It's true, you do process the sexual experience, very powerfully, through your mind.

Aspirin's Effect on Cancer Death Risk Stirs Questions

Taking aspirin once a day reduces a person's risk of dying from cancer, but the benefit may not be as great as was previously thought, a new study says.

In the study, people who took a daily aspirin were 8 to 16 percent less likely to die over an 11-year period compared with people who did not take aspirin.

That's much less than the 37 percent reduced risk of cancer-related death found by a study published in March in the journal the Lancet.

"Our results provide additional support for a potential benefit of daily aspirin use for cancer mortality, but important questions remain about the size of this potential benefit," said Eric Jacobs, of the American Cancer Society's Epidemiology Research Program, who conducted the new study.

Although the results are encouraging, "it is still premature to recommend people start taking aspirin specifically to prevent cancer," Jacobs said. "Expert committees that develop clinical guidelines will consider the totality of evidence about aspirin's risks and benefits when guidelines for aspirin use are next updated," he said.

Aspirin and cancer risk

The benefit of aspirin seen in the Lancet study seemed larger than expected, given that previous work found no decrease in the risk of dying from cancer among people who took aspirin every other day, Jacobs said.

In the new study, Jacobs and colleagues analyzed information from more than 100,000 people who were periodically asked about their use of aspirin.

Between 1997 and 2008, about 5,100 participants died of cancer.

The yearly rate of death from cancer among men who did not take aspirin was 596 deaths per 100,000 people. The rate was 493 deaths per 100,000 people among men who took daily aspirin.

For women, the yearly rates of death were 337 deaths per 100,000 among those who did not take aspirin, and 295 deaths per 100,000 among those who took daily aspirin.

Daily aspirin was associated with a reduced risk of cancer-related death regardless of how many years participants took the drug. This finding was in contrast to previous studies, some of which have shown people need to take aspirin daily for 10 or more years to have a lower risk of dying from cancer.

There was no link between aspirin use and risk of cancer-related death for smokers, the researchers said.

Possible side effects

The new findings on aspirin and risk of cancer-related death echo those of studies conducted in the past, Dr. John Baron, of the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, wrote in an editorial accompanying the study.

"The big picture on aspirin use and cancer is very positive," Baron said.

However, taking aspirin does come with risks, Baron said, including an increased risk of gastrointestinal bleeding.

Because people in the new study were not randomly assigned to take daily aspirin, the findings may have been influenced by the health behaviors of the study population, the researchers noted. For example, those who took a daily aspirin may have been more likely to seek medical attention, they said.

The study and editorial are published in today's (Aug. 10) issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

MRSA Strikes More Hospital Patients, Study Finds

The rate of MRSA infections in hospital patients has increased in recent years, according to a new study.

Results show that in 2003, an average of 21 out of every 1,000 hospital patients developed an infection with the bacteria commonly called MRSA, or methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. In 2008, that number was 42 out of 1,000 patients. The study involved patients at nonprofit academic medical centers in the United States.

MRSA is a strain of bacteria that's resistant to the antibiotics used to treat staph infections.

"This means that MRSA infections are very common, and that many of them — and an increasing number in 2003 to 2008 — were serious enough to require hospitalization," said study researcher Dr. Michael David, an assistant professor at the University of Chicago.

The study was based on data gathered from 160 academic medical centers, along with 260 of their affiliated hospitals. Researchers examined patients' billing records and medical charts. There were between 2.7 million and 3.7 million hospital discharge records during each year of the study.

People who must be hospitalized can take some steps to lower their risk of infection, David said. "Patients in hospitals can themselves wash their hands and remind visitors and health care workers to wash their hands, as well, upon entering their room," he said.

"It is believed that most MRSA transmission in hospitals occurs on the hands of health care workers," he said. "The most important intervention may be hand washing."

The findings seem to counter the results of a study published in July in the Journal of the American Medical Association, which reported a decrease in MRSA infections between 2005 and 2010 in both hospitalized patients and people who contracted the bacterial infection elsewhere in their communities. However, that study was based on data collected by the Department of Defense on more than 9 million military personnel, whereas the new study was based on general population patients treated at academic medical centers.

A 2010 study from researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also suggested a decline in MRSA infections. But the CDC study included only invasive cases of MRSA, in which the infection has spread to the blood. The new study, in contrast, also included infections of the skin, which make up the majority of MRSA infections, David said.

It is not known whether the new study's findings are representative of MRSA infection rates at all U.S. hospitals, David noted. Additionally, it's not known what has happened to the infection rate since 2008, he said. There are no data available on hospitalized patients in the general population since that time.

More research is needed to figure out how to stop the spread of MRSA outside the health care setting, and how to prevent infections in people who are carrying the bacteria, but don't have any symptoms of infection, he said.

The new study is published in the August issue of the journal Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology.

Meditation actually refers to a state where your body and mind are consciously relaxed and focused. To reach this blissful state, all you need to do is just be present and allow all the thoughts and feelings to be there without identifying with them in any ways. Here is a simple guided breathing meditation that you can try to calm your mind in a hectic situation:

1. First of all, close your eyes, keep your body erect and sit on any comfortable position. Start to follow your breath naturally. "Breathing in, I know that I'm breathing in. Breathing out, I know that I'm breathing out." You just need to know and understand the general characteristic of breath, either long or short, fine or coarse, etc. You don't need to overfocus or overconcentrate on the breath as exclusion of everything else, nor to focus on nostril tip, upper lip, or abdomen. Just let the breath flows naturally and relax.

2. If a thought or feeling appears, just let it go. "Let it go" means just let it be there without interrupting it in any way. Allow it to come and do whatever it wants, but you don't need to pay attention to it. It's just a thought after all. You don't need to squeeze or suppress your mind in any way. Just let it be there by itself.

3. Next, just relax the tightness and tension in your mind and body. This tension is the form of craving that manifests in both your mind and body. We can see this tightness and tension clearly just after the mind starts to wobble around. This is how the "I like it or I don't like it" mind arises and creates huge amount of suffering in our life due to our attachment and craving to these fleeting phenomenas. Therefore, we just need to relax and let go all the tightness and tension and feel our mind opened and expanded in space of infinite emptiness.

4. After that, you can notice the tight mental fist wrapped around the sensation (feeling) and just let it be there, let it float like the bubble in the air. You don't need to verbalize it or make it more than what it! is. It's just a feeling anyway. Let it be there by itself and just be aware of it without any resistance. Sonn you will find all the pain and unpleasant feeling in your body and will dissolve by itself without you doing anything.

5. Finally, re-establish your mindfulness and allow the breath to become predominant again. After that SMILE!!! DON'T FORGET TO SMILE. Smile can relax all the tension in your facial muscles and make your face more calm and serene. Just look at the Buddha statue. Every Buddha Statue is smiling, isn't it?

Take nothing seriously. Just let go, relax, and breathe...

You can also laugh when you see how crazy your mind is. Don't try to control the feelings with thoughts, because it doesn't work and it hurts. The source of suffering is trying to change and verbalize the feelings with thoughts. Feeling is just a feeling, thought is just a thought. If you can, try to examine passively these links of dependent origination: after contact arises, feeling arises (Pleasant, unpleasant or neutral), after feeling arises, craving arises (I like it or I don't like it /tension in body and mind), shortly after craving arises, clinging arises (the thoughts about why it's there and how to change it). If you understand this, you can let go more easily and joyfully.
