3 Western Approaches to Yoga

Theraputic ApplicationsYoga has been used as a form of therapy that utilizes different yoga techniques in order to restore physical and mental health. Most recently there have been some Western Yoga teachers that have begun using Yoga practices and Yoga posture for therapeutic purposes. This has resulted in some advances for general therapy as the physical postures of Yoga strongly lend themselves to the healing and strengthening of the body. Although using Yoga as a form of therapy is not a new idea, its development into a complete discipline is something that has formed over the past few decades. Yoga therapy instructors need to master more positions and have a higher degree of skill then traditional Yoga instructors. This has helped Yoga to continue to develop in Western culture. Typically Yoga is practiced by those people who do not suffer from any ailments of disabilities that might require unique attention. However, Yoga therapy is designed to address there ailments and disabilities.

The Yoga LifestyleUsing Yoga as a complete lifestyle is promoted by traditional Yoga trainers to some degree or another. Going to a Yoga class one or two times a week is preferred then not participating in Yoga at all. Yoga is greatly beneficial even if it is only used as a means of exercising. However, the real strength of Yoga lies in its ability to be adopted as a lifestyle and used as a means to bring together the body and mind in a state of healing. Practicing Yoga does not always mean completing a series of postures, it also involves meditation. Even above physical exercise and meditation is the practice of Yoga involving awareness. It is this awareness of our physical and mental state that allows Yoga practitioners to bring healing or increased energy to their minds and bodies.

Spiritual Aspects of YogaThe Yoga lifestyle as described above deals with living a healthy and wholesome life. On the other hand, the spiritual aspects of Yoga is concerned with the Y! oga lifestyle as well as coming into a state of enlightenment, or more simple put discovering ones spiritual presence. This presence is the same among all beings and it exists outside of the human body and mind. Yoga states that only through the physical, mental and spiritual practice of Yoga can you come to a state of true enlightenment.

West Nile Outbreak Reaches 1,100 Cases in US

The United States is experiencing one of the biggest outbreaks of West Nile virus in history, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

As of Tuesday, 1,118 cases of the mosquito-borne disease had been reported. That's the highest number ever reported at this point in the year since the disease was first detected in the U.S. in 1999. If cases continue to grow at this pace, the West Nile outbreak could be the largest ever in the United States, said Dr. Lyle Petersen, director of the CDC's Division of Vector-Borne Infectious Diseases.

So far, 41 people have died from West Nile infections.

About 630 people have developed the rare neuroinvasive form of the disease, which affects the nervous system. The other cases involved what doctors call West Nile fever, a condition that can cause fever, headache, body aches, nausea, vomiting.

Texas, the state hit hardest by the outbreak, has reported 537 cases of West Nile, close to 300 of which have been the neuroinvasive form. In some parts of the state, officials have begun aerial pesticide spraying to curb the spread of the disease.

Most people infected with the West Nile virus show no symptoms; from the number of neuroinvasive cases that have occurred, it can be estimated that more than 94,000 people in the United States have been infected with West Nile this year. It's likely that about 98 percent of cases of West Nile fever are not reported, the CDC says.

These unreported cases still take a toll on the nation's health and economy, as people who may not know that West Nile is the cause of their illness take time off from work or use health care resources, said William Schaffner, chairman of the department of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University.

"The problem is even larger… than the already notably larger problem of neuroinvasive disease,"Schaffner said. The impact of unreported cases is a factor in the decision to call the current West Nile outbreak an emergency, as Dallas did, Schaffner said.

The reason for the large outbreak this year is not clear, but it could be related to this season's especially hot summer. Hot weather seems to increase the virus' transmissibility, Petersen said.

Pass it on: More than 1,100 cases of West Nile virus have occurred in the United States this year so far.

Reduction of Stress on the Body

Posted: 22 Aug 2012 12:00 PM PDT

Article by Ronnie Tanner

There's no denying that most of us experience stress during our day. Medical science has proven that a certain amount is actually beneficial. Not only does it improve our performance but it also gives us a boost of adrenaline, which helps us to think more clearly and increases access to our memory.

Excessive levels, however, have a negative effective on both our mental and emotional well-being, but also our professional performance. Too much causes us to become worried, aggravated, depressed and withdrawn. Our performance at work will suffer because we retreat into ourselves and lose momentum. Our family lives suffer because we simply want to pull away and absorb ourselves in our private worries.

It is common to feel real physical consequences when we have too much stress in our lives. It is historically known that too much can have a bad affect on our hearts. Heart patients are often told to reduce the strain and worry in their lives or else they may suffer severe consequences.

But how can we reduce it?

Take Control of Your Life

Many of us feel helpless when it comes to limiting the level of tension in our lives. This is simply not so. By taking firm grasp of the reigns we can say who or what has the right to cause us stress - and we can also say when enough is enough.

For the majority of us our work lives is what causes us the greatest amount of worry, and this is particularly one of the areas in which we feel helpless. Instead, approach your supervisor and let them know how you're feeling. Outline ways in which you can reduce strain at work.

Also learn to compartmentalize. Keep work at work. By recognizing that what you do at work is less significant than what you do at home, you'll be able to separate the two. Reducing your work to insignificant as compared to your home life will allow you to put work in its proper place and will elevate your personal life back to where it belongs.

Yoga an Alternative Exercise

Posted: 22 Aug 2012 11:00 AM PDT

Article by Sarah Labdar

Yoga was first experimented with in the US in the 1960's and has steadily grown in popularity since. Approximately 30 million Americans practice Hatha yoga. Like many of the other alternative medicines, yoga promotes a whole-body approach to health and exercise. Unlike traditional medical practices yoga is a physical and mental discipline that uses posture-related techniques that involve gentle stretching, breath control and meditation. As patients delve more and more into the alternative medicine fields to cure their health problems the followers of acupuncture, chiropractic, meditation and yoga are growing at a rapid speed. Yoga originated in India around 3300 BC. Much like many other practices in India, yoga is associated with philosophies of Hinduis, Buddhism and Jainism. Yoga has several meanings which are derived from Sanskrit, all of which can be correlated to traditional or modern day yoga, "to control", "to unite", "contemplation", and "absorption". The major branches of yoga include Ra j a Y o g a, K a r m a Y o g a, J n a n a Y o g a, B h a k t i Y o g a, a n d H a t h a Y o g a. Traditionally yoga was a ritual discipline of concentration with a goal of improving health to achieve Moksha, which is a release from worldly suffering. Hatha yoga is the most commonly practiced type of yoga in US. Hatha yoga is what typical Americans refer to as yoga is used for mental and physical health. Americans consider yoga an alternative to exercise. Yoga is mental and spiritual well being brought about through physical postures and poses. It involves a connection between the mind and body through breathing. Yoga strengthens the muscles and stretches the body in order to calm the mind. Yoga is a great way to improve flexibility and decrease physical discomfort in the body.Due to high stress levels in people's lives, many turn to yoga to reduce this stress. Yoga is known for reducing stress and increased relaxation of both mind and body. However it has many other health benefits as well. Yoga has been! known to help with people who suffer from lower back pain. Due to specific poses, yoga strengthens and stretches muscles, which can be effected by injuries. In addition people who suffer from high anxiety have seen improved results from yoga based on it's calming of the mind and spirit. Now a days you can find classes for all different types of yoga and for people of all different ages. Most people who turn to yoga are either looking for a gentler way to exercise or a more holistic and spiritual way to reduce stress and relax. Try a beginners yoga class to see if this alternative exercise is right for you.

Building Your Strength In The Present Moment

Posted: 22 Aug 2012 11:00 AM PDT

Editor's note: This is a guest post from JC Deen, author of LGN365: A Complete Body-Recomposition Course.

I want you to try something for me. Read the instructions first, and then give it a go.

Instructions:

Close your eyes and be very deliberate with your thoughts. I don't want you to think about what happened yesterday, or what you plan on doing later today.

Do nothing but focus on your breathing, counting each inhalation and exhalation as 1 breath.

Count  1 … 2 … 3 … and so forth.

Set a timer on your smartphone and do this for the next sixty seconds.

Okay go.

All right, so now that you're reading again, if you made it the entire minute without interruption, congratulations. You're doing very well when it comes to giving deliberate focus to your daily tasks and objectives.

However, I imagine your mind wandered far past counting your breaths. If you're like most people (myself included), you were inundated with thoughts of your to-do list, what you're going to eat for dinner, that you forgot to put on deodorant, or wondering if you turned off the curling iron at home.

The truth is we hardly ever give all of our attention to the present moment.

This is problematic because we aren't getting the most out of our work, and we're robbing ourselves of results later on.

As a fitness coach, I see this in play on a daily basis. When a client comes to me, our conversation is most always about the future – how they want to look and feel on a certain date in the future.

Some of the guys I coach have the goal of a bigger, chiseled physique, while the ladies want to improve their appearance and get back into their skinny jeans.

Or maybe their goal is to improve general health and to simply feel better about themselves.

Regardless of the goal (as there are many), the common theme is being too outcome dependent, which can often overwhelm us. Setting big goals can seem rather daunting, which often leads to fear and procrastination.

Rarely any of us ever focus 100% on the present moment, which is what produces the actual result in the future.

Because of this, I've completely changed my approach to the way I work with my clients and my own goal setting.

If we don't take action now, we'll settle for nothing later.

The Importance of Now

All we have is this second, and at any given point, it can all end.

So I ask this: 'Why are we so often caught up in worrying about the future? Why don't we focus on the now and be deliberate with our actions?'

It's easy to avoid dealing with the current moment, and putting it off to get lost in time-wasting tasks that aren't serving us.

However this will never get us the results we want.

So how does one normally reach a goal?

It's simple. You decide what needs to happen, and then work backward, determining the actions necessary to succeed.

But simple is not always easy.

Some feel we have no control over what happens to us. If this is your belief, then it's probably real for you.

You can have control over your goals and circumstances if you pay closer attention to each moment.

I got the idea for this article as I was chatting with my friend Roman about our pursuit of strength through barbell training and how our experiences focusing on the moment are very similar.

About three years ago, I was in and out of college, working a job I hated and at 22, completely unsure of what my future would look like.

I lost interest in my studies, but kept going to class and wasting away at work. I was empty, 500 miles from home, and was constantly obsessing about the future. I thought I'd never figure it out.

During this period in my life, I found myself gravitating toward my gym sessions… much more so than before. I was in the weight room when I should've been in class taking exams.

This experience was quite liberating. When I was training, I completely forgot about my worries. The gym was the only place I found relief from my daily stresses. All I thought about was how my muscles felt, and can vividly remember the taste of lactate as I finished my grueling workouts.

I absorbed every thought and feeling I experienced during this pursuit of strength. My focus on the present moment gave me control. It gave me purpose.

I eventually dropped out, and found myself even more obsessed with strength and conditioning than I was during my days of high school athletics. Late nights were spent reading books and articles – literally everything I could find about training and coaching.

As a result of this deliberate focus in the gym, I built a physique I was proud of and I soon began helping others do the same.

For the first time in my life, I was focused and living in the now – I was happy again.

I promised myself to always place emphasis on helping others, improving myself, and the pursuit of happiness in my work.

The question I ask myself daily is this: 'what deserves my attention in this very moment and how can it make mine or someone else's life better?'

Building Your Strength In The Present Moment

It's hard to understand just how important this concept is.

This is what I tell my clients: "The only thing you must do today is make every action count. If tomorrow happens to come, then repeat what you did today."

This helps people take their mind off a goal that might seem very far away.

Give each moment your full attention.

So you want to wear your favorite bikini this time next year? Maybe you want to enter a triathlon in the fall?

Good. Set those goals, and then come back to the present. What can you do right now to ensure you reach your goal?

Start with your first work out. What does the weight feel like in your hands? How do your quads feel as you finish your intervals? How does it feel to record improvements in your training log?

It's easy to fantasize about the future, but daydreaming is hardly fruitful.

All we have is the task of this current moment – treat it with respect and give it your deliberate attention.

As simple as it sounds, my challenge to you is this: Keep your goals in in mind, but aim to be much more deliberate with your daily actions.

Focus on the tasks you take as you work toward your destination, and be mindful of moment. Absorb everything because the moment will eventually be gone forever.

Slow Down and Start Living With Yoga

Posted: 22 Aug 2012 10:00 AM PDT

Article by Vanessa Stoesse

In a world that continuously keeps spinning faster, where the pace of our everyday life is increasing, it can feel as if there are not enough hours in a day to accomplish tasks and that we are in a constant race to catch up with life as opposed to truly living it. People are looking for outlets to distract themselves from the daily frustrations of work, relationship troubles and financial stress. Sleep deprivation, unhealthy diet, extra pounds and mood swings are all too familiar for most. How can we get out of this uncomfort zone - how can we improve our quality of life? The secret? - Yoga! The millions of people who take up the practice of yoga everyday can see its endless benefits. To ask what the benefits of yoga are is almost comparable to ask what the benefits of water are. Like the liquid of life, yoga can be essential in improving your physical well-being and improving your quality of life. But let's get down to it - how can yoga really improve your life? The physical benefits of yoga on the body are the easiest for one to observe. Practicing yoga for a length of time will increase your strength, flexibility, and posture, giving you a more naturally balanced body that you can be comfortable with. Yoga poses called asanas, gently and safely stretch your joints and muscles, releasing any tension you might have in your body as well as giving your joints youthful fluidity.

Some styles of yoga such as Ashtanga and power yoga are more spirited than others and will be more on the physically demanding scale as opposed to the mentally demanding forms of yoga. These yoga styles are demanding exercises that keep you burning off those unwanted calories while giving you the figure you have always dreamt about. Other styles focus more on mental rather than physical strengths, but no matter which type of yoga you find best suited for you, you will sure realize that yoga is the fountain of youth everyone has been looking for.

The less obvious benefit of yoga that might not seem evident at fir! st but that is no less essential is its ability to improve your daily quality of life. The breathing techniques it teaches allows you to improve your mental capacity to concentrate as well as helping you to reduce your stress level which is easily heightened in the daily grind. Studies have also shown that yoga can be incredibly effective in fighting heart disease. The breathing technique that is taught with yoga has the exceptional ability to reduce one's heart rate and blood pressure. This is ideal for people suffering from hypertension, heart disease, and stroke. But most of call the benefits of yoga that are invisible to the unopened third eye, are happiness, feelings of gratitude and a heightened sense of awareness.

If after reading about all these benefits you're thinking - well, if yoga is comparable to water, why couldn't I just drink a few glasses of H20 and get the same effect? The upside about yoga is that it is more portable and more sustainable than water - you can take your knowledge and practice of yoga anywhere you go, and no one can take it away from you. Throw your mat down on the desert sands in Jordan, practice pranayama on a secluded island in Thailand, or simply hold the lessons of peace in your heart and mind while meditating on a mountaintop in Peru and you will reap the benefits of a healthy and happy life.

THINGS I'VE LEARNED IN BIKRAM YOGA

Posted: 22 Aug 2012 09:00 AM PDT

Article by Fabio Pacheco

There are many reasons why you should use Bikram Yoga. The advantages of Bikram Yoga can totally change your life. It's amazing how Yoga can trigger your life and change your perspectives.

Bikram Yoga is widely known as the "hot yoga". It was also called the Bikram Method Yoga. This aims to build your mental and physical strength. Improving your flexibility and balance is important and covered by Bikram Yoga.

Bikram yoga has roots in Hatha yoga which was designed to heal the mind and the body.

Bikram Choudhury was the founder of Bikram Yoga. He was a founder and a yoga practitioner. He developed Bikram Yoga after he met an injury in a weightlifting accident. He was so determined that he had discovered some healing benefits in practicing some exercises. A lot of people have proven the benefits of Bikram Yoga so the practice was passed on and many people continued to practice it.

Some people practice Bikram Yoga for healing purposes and physical therapy. This type of Yoga was proven helpful in bringing holistic benefits to those who believed and practiced it.

In fact, there was a patient who suffered from a knee injury. He tried to practice Bikram Yoga and just six weeks after continuous practice, his knees started to feel better. Some difficulties and pains that he suffered from were all disappearing.

In order to be successful with the healing process of Bikram Yoga, you need devotion in practicing it.

There are some people who do not believe in the benefits of Bikram Yoga. Bikram Choudhury developed Bikram Yoga with the help of some scientists. The scientists from the University of Tokyo University Hospital proved that Bikram Yoga has medical benefits. Some of its benefits include the repairing of tissues and helps in curing chronic ailments.

The findings and benefits were presented at the International Medical Conference in the year 1972. It was stated that Bikram Yoga has the ability to affect the body internally.

The poses and pressur! e replen ishes the cells and the flushing toxins in our body. It also oxygenates blood throughout our body keeping it clean and healthy.

While Bikram was on his research at Tokyo University, he discovered that the healing process takes place when all the body systems are functioning well, conditioned and strengthened. If the body is weak, applying the practice and healing method will be difficult to obtain.

Bikram has come up with twenty-six posture exercises which are to be practiced every day. In doing so, treatment in the body can be easily obtained. Some poses are accumulated with the combination of the western and eastern disciplines in Yoga which focuses on the stretching of the muscles, tendons, organs, nerves, glands and ligaments.

The different postures have connections and each of it precedes a posture that is helpful in treating the body effectively.

Anyone who wants to do yoga can use Biktam Yoga. It chooses no age at all. This type of yoga works with a tourniquet effect which includes balancing, stretching and creating pressure which is all done at a same time to keep a good blood flow to all the parts of the body.

Thanks to Bikram Choudhury, we can now have solutions to some of our medical problems. Always remember that dedication and devotion to Bikram Yoga is the main ingredient to staying healthy.

Article by Brenda Rubio

Where else would you feel completely relaxed doing yoga than in the privacy and comfort of your own home? With Yoga exercise DVDs, you can know bring this experience home with you.

Some of the best and most common yoga positions for both advanced and novice are:

* Triangle Pose * Up Dog * Tree Pose * Bending Forward Pose * Bridge Pose * Locust Pose * Cat Pose

Yoga also introduces yoga crunches to its practitioners for additional core strength training.

What Do You Need to Do Yoga at Home?

There is minimal equipment necessary for doing yoga at home. Really all you need is yourself and your Yoga DVD to instruct you. The most common piece of equipment used is a yoga mat which you can purchase in many places including sporting goods stores and even the supermarket. Other useful yoga tools are straps, chairs and blocks. You can either purchase these pieces or simply improvise using chairs in your home and belts or towels as straps.

Is zazen really meditation?

Posted: 22 Aug 2012 07:00 AM PDT

I sometimes wonder about the Soto Zennists who believe that Dogen's insistence on zazen is really beneficial.  How can sitting one's carnal body on a stuffed pillow aid one in achieving Buddhahood or even offer a glimpse into pure Mind?  First, what is the body that the Soto Zennist sits on a stuffed pillow?  According to the Mahaparinirvana Sutra we should,

"Think that this body is like a plantain, a mirage in the hot season, watery foam, a phantom, a transformed body, the castle of a gandharva, an unfired brick, lightning, a picture drawn on water, a prisoner facing death, ripe fruit, a piece of meat, the warp on a loom which is about to end, and the ups and downs of a mortar. You should think that all created things are like poisonous food and that anything made is possessed of all worries."

As regards this body, it doesn't matter what kind of posture we put it in, it is not an adequate vehicle to enlightenment—it cannot save us no matter how we treat it.  In fact, it belongs to Mara the Evil One; moreover, it is thoroughly empty of a self-nature.  It is also the non-self (anattâ) of the Pali canon which is suffering.

The body (including its mental life) is like a thick veil.  It prevents us from recognizing our true nature.  Granted, that we  implicitly have the nature of a Buddha (buddhadhatu), however, we don't recognize it when we observe our body and the world the body inhabits.  Sitting on a cushion is not going to make our body less of an encumbrance so we can actualized our true nature.

Real meditation or dhyâna, that led to  Siddhartha's awakening as the Buddha, is a subtle exercise that involves a search for absolute substance which is thoroughly immaculate, so much so, the careless adept is inclined to believe there is nothing, fundamentally, to search for.  But the payoff is directly meeting with this substance, which is realized to be luminous.  It is dynamic yet, in itself, it is empty of all adventitiousness—although, it is not spiritually separate from phenomena.  This is also known as the luminous or clear light Mind.

Soto Zen's zazen cannot accomplish this since it is directed at sitting, relying on the physical as if the physical body could somehow, like a brick or a clay tile, be polished into a mirror (i.e., luminous Mind).

Be more mindful for a better workplace

Posted: 22 Aug 2012 06:01 AM PDT

Jen Weigel, Chicago Tribune: Can you be a success in the world of business and still be mindful? What exactly does it mean to be "mindful" anyway? According to Mirabai Bush, one of the creators of a mindfulness course developed for Google employees called "Search Inside Yourself," you will be more productive and motivated if you use respect, compassion and generosity in the workplace.

"Mindfulness has to do with paying attention to what's happening in the moment without judgment," said Bush. "Sometimes people think being mindful means being slow — it's not about being slow, it's about being slow enough that you can …

"To Women With PMS And Stressed Out"

Posted: 22 Aug 2012 05:02 AM PDT

Article by Uka Tumur

We all know that stress is bad for your health but unfortunately that's almost everything we know about stress. Most of us don't really know about how bad it can be to your health and specially to triggering PMS symptoms. Stress affects our hormonal balance by causing adrenal gland exhaustion and reduces our progesterone output.

As a women your ovaries produce a combination of hormones including estrogen, progesterone and testosterone during the menstrual cycle. These hormones fluctuate and help regulate women's menstrual cycle during her reproductive years. When these hormones become imbalanced it causes the symptoms like those associated with PMS. However Estrogen is a powerful hormone, and when it becomes the dominant hormone and progesterone is deficient, the estrogen becomes toxic to the body.

Progesterone is more like an antidote to the harmful effects of estrogen, and helps to create a greater hormone balance. It is very important for women to keep a correct hormonal balance between estrogen and progesterone.

An excess in the quantity of estrogen will cause insomnia and anxiety, which further taxes the adrenal gland. This leads to a further reduction in progesterone output and even more estrogen dominance. If this vicious cycle lasts for several years, the adrenal glands becomes exhausted. This dysfunction leads to blood sugar imbalance, hormonal imbalances, and chronic fatigue.

For instance when you face a stressful situation your body draws on its progesterone to produce the hormones to counteract it. These are the hormones that protect against stress. However if your body is in a constant or permanent state of stress it can't provide enough progesterone to be converted into anti-stress hormones and the result is adrenal exhaustion. Furhtermore, you will be in deficit of progesterone which is essential for other normal body functions.

Now we know how stress can affect our body and causing hormonal imbalance to trigger irritability that comes along with pms ! symptoms. PMS can be prevented when we prevent ourselves from daily nonsense stress.

be kind to yourself as you do your yoga practic

Posted: 22 Aug 2012 04:00 AM PDT

Article by victoriasbox

First, be kind to yourself as you do your yoga practice. Think of yoga as an exploration. It is a place to cultivate awareness and consciousness of self is the master of yoga. You can pass on knowledge to the rest of his life, watching himself in all situations as it does in the practice of yoga. In yoga class, the teacher gives you points on the alignment and how to move her body in the poses. Bring what I remember of what the professor emphasizes that what they are paying attention in yoga class. Lovingly correct your posture, and by that I mean I put it in greater harmony at the time they are doing. Consciousness at the time, right now, you take the approach indicated that yoga cultivates. This is not where you are going or where you've been. It is at this time. How do you feel the pose? What is the shape of the position of where you'd like to be? The comparison can use what your teacher has been suggested as an ideal, however, the comparison is really between you and yourself. The goal is to be more present and aware that it can possibly be at all times of the practice of yoga. Now those are good goals for life too. Can you feel the time is, the more fully now? Can you bring more awareness of what is at this moment? Can you see yourself in love and what they are doing? There is a bit of a paradox in the practice of yoga that is similar to meditation. You should come out without a result or goal in mind. The goal is to practice and do not wait to get anywhere. It's more about giving yourself time in your day to just "be" instead of trying to do something more, like many things on your to-do list. Moreover, in living finishes. Sometimes you may need the structure to its practice. The trick is to throw your mat, preferably the same time each day, and get started. Better yet, how about if you remember some poses that you like before? Not a few are raised to know and enjoy doing so in class or a yoga video. Once you get the practice, he recalls other poses. The first five minutes of any yoga practi! ce is th e most challenging, with the hardest part unroll your yoga mat and step on it! In fact, we pledge to do this, simply stand there and see what happens. Another way forward is to use a yoga video or audio practice through a practical guide. It helps to start with something you know, or is your level of experience, and cares. I've been practicing yoga for 30 years and still struggle to make the first step every day. I love audio CDs as Shiva Rea Yoga Sanctuary. that has different tracks for the practice of yoga postures flow. Some days I feel less energy, so I'm more relaxed topics such as yoga in the Lunar Yoga CD. In more energetic days, I do yoga sun, the other CD in this series. I might be interested in backbends, bends forward or maybe a vinyasa sequence. I can choose tracks, and I would like to end with some guided relaxation at the end. Since I have several CDs of Shiva Rea. The drops of nectar, more than a guided meditation and relaxation. Yoga backbends I love singing it when I'm in the mood, and gives me Vinyasa Yoga Sanctuary offers similar to my yoga class. It seems valuable to listen to guided practice to give me the structure at home. Although I have the guidance of a teacher talking through me, I have to remember to listen to my body doing the pose. I have to respect my limitations at the time that what we strive to bring the intention, awareness and focus to the position. Yoga is sometimes an effortless effort, the balance between the do's and don'ts. How to be a good yoga teacher yourself? Practice. Daily practice, even a small practice. You should come out of a yoga practice with a sense of having learned something about his conscience and the body as a teacher. Sometimes it is about the body, and sometimes is about life or his own life. Is likely to reap the benefits of yoga practice more common. Two advantages I love to feel better in my body and feel more comfortable in my mind. I have less pain when I do more yoga. I feel more relaxed throughout the day. Ultimately, yoga is not just do! ing pose s. Yoga is something that pervades his life, and does so in a way that brings fulfillment and the rest of what you do and who you are

Debt Relief Programs - How to Find Legitimate Debt Reduction Programs Online

Posted: 22 Aug 2012 02:00 AM PDT

Article by matthiw coach

While the economy is back to the road of recovery, employment is still lagging behind. The US government shelled out millions of dollars to bail out the ailing companies. The benefits of this financial aid in turn helped out the small scale business and the common mass as well. They got an option to negotiate the debt with the credit card companies and eliminate it up to 70 percent. This however is not as simple as it appears in words. It needs to be planned strategically and implemented precisely.

Debt relief programs indeed brought relief to those under debt, but selecting a legitimate one is extremely vital. It would be worth mentioning the number of fraudulent debt settlement companies that have come up in the market, they portrait a very lucrative offer like eliminating your debt up to 90 percent. Believe it or not but that is an unreal result and you should not get carried away. Some of them do not have a joining fees mentioned in their documents and they suggest you to enroll yourself and pay whatever is possible, please beware of such companies. Debt has already taken away the rest and peace out of your life; do not add more troubles falling into the trap of illegal or bogus firms.

To begin with, information available online and offline is good enough, though the best is recommended on Internet. You get a chance to read detailed information about the debt relief firm online. It is a good idea to look for reviews and testimonials posted by people about their service, an authentic test would be to see if the company is listed in the Better Business Bureau. The catch is to find the name of this company in BBB, and not just to see a BBB stamp on the company website. Better Business Bureau is a franchise that operates to ensure fair trade practice and provides accreditation to the company. The news, the media also rely on their information so it is worth checking. Do not hesitate to ask a question, if you have doubts and make sure you get all terms and conditions in written. Not to ! mention the harassing calls by lenders and collection agencies add to stress, so this needs to be taken care as well. Discuss with your debt settlement company how do they plan to take these calls and get a clear picture.

Following these tips you can save a lot of potential issues and be able to eliminate debt without further troubles.

If you have over ,000 in unsecured debt there is legitimate debt relief help available. Creditors of unsecured debt are very concerned about collecting and debt settlement companies know exactly how to eliminate at least 50% of what you actually owe. Yoga Versus Pilates

Posted: 21 Aug 2012 11:00 PM PDT

Article by Tony Gallimore

Yoga Versus Pilates

The yoga craze of the late twentieth century ended up segueing into the Pilates craze of the early 2000â??s but many people questioned the exercise value of both. Despite media hoopla, few people actually seemed to understand the physical benefits of either. The truth is that both forms of exercise have unique approaches to fitness and can provide significant benefits for the strengthening and conditioning of the body. Though similar in the focus on strengthening the body through isometric movements, the paths of yoga and Pilates ultimately diverge.

Yoga was developed over five thousand years ago in Northern India. It is first mentioned in the sacred Hindu text Rig Veda. During its first clear period, yoga was practiced and refined by Vedic priests, who documented the practice in their writings. Patanjali, who is considered by most to be the father of classical yoga, fostered the next phase of yogaâ??s development. Following Patanjaliâ??s broad expansion of yoga and its meanings, Tantric yoga became accepted as the new form of yoga and concentrated on cleansing both the mind and the body. Yoga finally neared its modern form in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century when more and more Indian yogis traveled to the West, sharing their art and increasing the worldâ??s interest in yoga. The 1947 premiere of Indra Deviâ??s yoga studio in Hollywood became the opening bell to the American fascination with yoga. While most incarnations of yoga have had a strong spiritual element, modern Hatha yoga does not align itself with any religion or spirituality; instead it focuses primarily on the yoga postures and using them to reach and maintain strength and flexibility as well as inner calm.

Compared to yoga, Pilates is a spring chicken in terms of age. Joseph Pilates, who was born in Germany and suffered frail health as a child, created the program. Pilates overcame his childhood sicknesses through exercise and began to create a system of physical development! that wo uld later become his legacy to the world. In his thirties, Pilates traveled to England to work as a self-defense instructor to Scotland Yard but was forced into an internment camp during World War I. Despite the hardship of internment, Pilates went about his business within the camp, teaching his physical program to his fellow internees. During the terrible flu epidemic of 1918, thousands of people died, but none of Pilatesâ?? protégés were affected. Following the war, Pilates returned to Germany but left for good when asked to teach his method to the German army. Settling in New York City with his new wife, Pilates opened his first fitness studio. He taught thousands of students until his death in 1967 at the age of 87. Trusted students carried on with the Pilates name and method, and by the early twenty-first century more than 5 million Americans were practicing Pilates.

Despite the wildly different histories, yoga and Pilates share the same focus on developing the muscles of the body and strengthening it by primarily using the bodyâ??s own resistance to build up power. The postures of yoga and the movements of Pilates are sometimes strikingly similar, but ultimately the two follow separate roads. Yoga has spawned a multitude of varieties that range from Kundalini to Iyengar to Tantric, though Hatha remains the most popular form in the United States. Many first-time yoga practitioners can find the pace to be overly slow or grow impatient while waiting to see results. The best candidate for Hatha yoga is a person who appreciates time to slow down, meditate, and spend quiet time with oneself, and does not become easily discouraged by failure to immediately master a pose. Yoga requires a certain measure of patience and while this can be developed through practice, lacking it can make the first several weeks of yoga practice very trying for a person. The good thing about yoga is that it rarely requires extra equipment. You will need a yoga mat to begin with but after that, accessories are op! tional. Blocks, straps, and other tools can be helpful, but are not required.

Pilates is a method that is fairly easy to master. It doesnâ??t call for complicated movements and is usually straightforward and simple to understand. The programâ??s movements also tend to build strength fairly quickly so that results are apparent sooner than in yoga. The ideal Pilates practitioner should be able to discipline himself to complete his routine every day, which is a large part of the method. Attending classes is a great way to start but for the maximum results, the method should be practiced daily. Pilates typically doesnâ??t require many props, though advanced practitioners will probably want to add tools to their workout in order to maintain a high level of fitness.

Sam Harris: "atheist" makes as much sense as "aunicornist"

Posted: 21 Aug 2012 11:00 PM PDT

Sam Harris, author of "The End of Faith," is a famous atheist. But he isn't fond of having that word describe him. After all, people who don't believe in unicorns aren't called "aunicornists."

They're just people who recognize that evidence is lacking for the existence of a mythical creature that resembles a horse, but has a single twisting horn on its forehead.

Likewise, what need is there for "atheist"? Why not simply call people who believe in God, "theists," while having no special word for those who don't?

So says Harris in a well-written and well-argued essay, The Problem With Atheism. (Thanks to blog post commenter "sgl" for sharing a link to this piece.)

I think that "atheist" is a term that we do not need, in the same way that we don't need a word for someone who rejects astrology. We simply do not call people "non-astrologers." All we need are words like "reason" and "evidence" and "common sense" and "bullshit" to put astrologers in their place, and so it could be with religion.

If the comparison with astrology seems too facile, consider the problem of racism. Racism was about as intractable a social problem as we have ever had in this country. We are talking about deeply held convictions.

...Of course, I'm not saying that racism is no longer a problem in this country, but anyone who thinks that the problem is as bad as it ever was has simply forgotten, or has never learned, how bad, in fact, it was.

So, we can now ask, how have people of good will and common sense gone about combating racism? There was a civil rights movement, of course. The KKK was gradually battered to the fringes of society. There have been important and, I think, irrevocable changes in the way we talk about race—our major newspapers no longer publish flagrantly racist articles and editorials as they did less than a century ago—but, ask yourself, how many people have had to identify themselves as "non-racists" to participate in this process? Is there a "non-racist alliance" somewhere for me to join?

Attaching a label to something carries real liabilities, especially if the thing you are naming isn't really a thing at all. And atheism, I would argue, is not a thing. It is not a philosophy, just as "non-racism" is not one. Atheism is not a worldview—and yet most people imagine it to be one and attack it as such. We who do not believe in God are collaborating in this misunderstanding by consenting to be named and by even naming ourselves.

...rather than declare ourselves "atheists" in opposition to all religion, I think we should do nothing more than advocate reason and intellectual honesty—and where this advocacy causes us to collide with religion, as it inevitably will, we should observe that the points of impact are always with specific religious beliefs—not with religion in general. There is no religion in general.

...Nobody wants to believe things on bad evidence. The desire to know what is actually going on in world is very difficult to argue with. In so far as we represent that desire, we become difficult to argue with. And this desire is not reducible to an interest group. It's not a club or an affiliation, and I think trying to make it one diminishes its power.

Good points.

I rarely call myself an atheist, because that word doesn't capture how I feel about my non-belief in God. I don't go around thinking to myself, "Oh, it is so satisfying to not believe in an imaginary God."

I just don't believe in God. If I wasn't surrounded by many millions of people who do believe in God, I'd never think about God at all, just as I never think about unicorns unless I come across some mention of them.

Harris is correct. Those of us who don't believe in God shouldn't be drawn into ridiculous debates between "theists" and "atheists." Actually, as he says, the debate is between those who favor evidence and reason over faith and guesswork.

We will have won this war of ideas against religion when atheism is scarcely intelligible as a concept. We will simply find ourselves in a world in which people cease to praise one another for pretending to know things they do not know. This is certainly a future worth fighting for. It may be the only future compatible with our long-term survival as a species. But the only path between now and then, that I can see, is for us to be rigorously honest in the present. It seems to me that intellectual honesty is now, and will always be, deeper and more durable, and more easily spread, than "atheism."

Finding Affordable Yoga Clothing

Finding Affordable Yoga Clothing

If you love yoga, you probably love all of the gear associated with it. You want to have the best yoga mat, the best yoga music, yoga sweat bands, and yoga DVDs. You probably also want to have the best yoga clothes to wear during your work out. Here are some tips for finding affordable yoga clothing like pants and tops.

Where Not To Look

If you need yoga clothing, the best place to look for things like yoga pants and tops is NOT at a specialty store! Any specialty store will charge a ton for yoga pants and other clothing. You can find specialty yoga shops on line or in your local mall, but the bottom line is that these yoga pants and clothes are not worth the price you will pay. Sure, they are definitely made of better quality materials and have a higher craftsmanship than cheaper versions of yoga pants and clothing. But you have to ask yourself; do you really need the expensive version? Unless you are doing yoga several times a day, every day, the cheaper versions that are more affordable to the average consumer will work just fine for your needs.

Article by Lee Mellott

Walking for health is a great way to reduce stress naturally. Most people today are familiar with what stress and anxiety feels like. When the body is stressed, it releases hormones that prepare you for a fight or flight response. As a result, your body gears up to deal with the stressor by quickening your pulse, raising your blood pressure, shortening your breath and clenching muscles.

While the flight or fight reaction may be helpful in dealing with certain stressful situations, in many instances there is to much pent up energy and few ways to release it. For instance, as you encounter traffic on your way to work you may feel anger or stress when another car cuts you off or traffic is backed up. But rarely do you have the opportunity to express the anger and stress that you feel. You sit in the car your stress levels building. As a result of being inhibited, these stress responses may do serious damage to the body in the long run, translating into high blood pressure, ulcers, headaches, depression, anxiety, and a host of other ailments.

Walking is an excellent way of releasing this energy. Walking for health leads to reduced stress and has a host of other benefits. When one walks, the cardiovascular system in the body; the part of the body that is responsible for distributing oxygen and circulating blood to all organs works better. Regular walking for health promotes better heart functioning and leads to a reduction in heart conditions like stroke, high blood pressure and build-up of bad cholesterol.

Over time and with regular walking for health, your body slowly starts converting fat into muscle, giving you a leaner, fitter body and reduced body weight (provided its combined with the right diet); your flexibility improves, and bone density improves which results in a reduced risk of osteoporosis. There is also evidence which shows that walking aids better digestion, reduces the risk of colon cancer and helps keep insulin in check.

Apart from this, endorphins, or happy ho! rmones get released into your blood stream when you are walking for health. This gives you an elevated feeling of well-being. What's more, just the act of waking up early in the morning and walking; with fresh air and happy thoughts for company is a great stress-reliever. Being completely in tune with your body, being aware of each muscle and each breath that you take can be a supremely meditative experience for many.

So the next time you walk, notice how your lungs function; how comfortably the air goes in and out of your body, observe the heart and how it beats in rhythm with your movements, experience the tightening and movement of your muscles; the feel of the ground on your feet. And just enjoy your time walking for health and pleasure. With all the wonderful things happening with your body when you walk, you're sure to feel the stress slowly melt away from your mind.

Namaste Yoga Information

We all know what yoga is. Whether you have seen a commercial of an individual twisted up like a pretzel, seen someone in an advertisement doing yoga, or heard a friend praise the exercise, you have heard of yoga. But do you know what Namaste yoga is? You might have heard of the benefits of Namaste yoga, but simply assumed that it was everyday yoga. However, it is important to realize that there are many different types of yoga. None are necessarily better than the other, but some are more suited for certain individuals than others might be. Here is some information on the Namaste school of yoga to help you understand this branch of yoga better.

The Importance Of Namaste

The word "Namaste" most literally means "I bow to you" in Indian. Namaste yoga begins with individuals putting their hands palms together in a steeple position. They then, at the same time, bow. This is where the Namaste school of yoga got its name. In most classes, this bow signifies the beginning and the end of the class. For traditional yoga, the saying of Namaste connects the exercise to the spiritual roots that it formed from. For many mainstream yoga participants, they neither know the meaning of the word Namaste nor really mean it when they say it. It is not spiritual but is instead tradition and what they were taught to do when learning Namaste yoga! Either way is fine when doing Namaste yoga, but it is still important to recognize the roots of the tradition.

Finding Namaste Yoga

If you are looking specifically for Namaste yoga exercise videos, chances are slim that you will find one. Though the term is used loosely in many yoga classes, the mainstream videos tend to use a collection of basic yoga exercises and do not use specific Namaste yoga poses. These videos are great if you need to do yoga on your own time, but if you are truly interested in learning the cultural importance behind yoga and the history of Namaste, you will need to enroll in a specific Namaste yoga! course. Make sure that the course is a Namaste study and not a hodge-podge mainstream yoga class.

Yoga is beneficial for your both your mind and your body. Even if you cannot find a Namaste yoga class, it is still beneficial for you to enroll in a yoga course. You will learn a few specific Namaste poses and you can work on mastering them as well as the other yoga poses that you learn.
