Failure is not the end of the world. Just think of a child learning to walk. The child keeps on falling down and getting up until it masters the skill of walking. This is the lesson a small child is teaching us.

Most people view failure as something negative, as something you never would want to experience. The truth is that failure is a necessary aspect of life that is not at all negative, in fact it is incredibly positive. Failure is your greatest opportunity to grow. Many people give up shortly after failure, this is one big reason why so many people live a life of constant disappointment.

I am writing this article today to change the definition of failure in your mind. I want you to see failure differently so that you can move your life in directions that you never thought were possible.

So, what precisely is failure? Failure is when you don't get a desired result. There is a particular Disney movie that I am fond of called, "Meet the Robinsons". In the film a young boy loves to create new inventions and he dreams of changing the world with science. His track record is filled with disasters and everyone around him knows to take cover or put on a helmet when he unveils one of his new inventions. His continued failure leads to him becoming disheartened and frustrated. Through a series of unexpected events he finds himself in the future and eventually learns about his future self. In the future the little boy has established a huge inventing company that changed the face of the world multiple times. The motto of his future self is, "Keep moving forward". At one point the futuristic family that the boy finds himself with applauds his failure at fixing an invention. They tell him that he tried and that by failing he learned, whereas with success you don't learn as much.

This story is relevant because even though he failed he learned from the mistakes he made and eventually built the dream he always wanted. It is not common for something, especially our biggest dreams, to come true on the first try. In fact if you have something you want to accomplish that you have never accomplished before, and you do it on your first try you should consider it a miracle.

No matter what it is that you want to do don't be disheartened by a slip up, view it as a grand opportunity to get closer to what you want. Utilize your good friends why and how. When you find that things didn't go the way you wanted them to ask yourself why it didn't work out. Then follow your why questions with the how question of how can you make it work next time.

Be motivated by slip ups because if you have slipped up that means that you are trying to move towards something you want. Just trying to get to something you want is an accomplishment. So many people just dream of what they want while sitting in front of the television sets doing nothing about it. You are actually moving towards your goal. You can not fail if you haven't tried, and 99% of the time you cannot succeed unless you have had a few failures along the way.

So, from this day forth you will not be discouraged when things don't go the way that you hoped they would. You will be inspired by the opportunity to improve your technique and get even closer to the things that you want!

Eva’s List: Traveling Light for Women

When I wrote my 16 Essential Tips for Traveling with a Family a couple weeks ago, I had a ton of people ask the same thing: "I'd like to see Eva's packing list!"

There's an idea, it seems, that it's much easier for a man to pack lightly than a woman. And while there's some truth to that, I think it's a matter of changing long-held ideas of what you need when you travel.

Luckily, we have my wife Eva to tell us what she packed, and what the experience was like for her. This is her first post on Zen Habits, and I'm happy to have her join me here.

Some context: Eva and I took five of our kids on a 3-week trip across southern Europe, in Rome, Florence, Bologna, Cinque Terre, the French Riviera (Antibes), and Barcelona. We brought only a small backpack each (no luggage, no roller carry-ons), and found the experience to be great.

Eva hasn't always packed this lightly. She used to need a heavier carry-on duffle bag that I would usually end up lugging around for her (we have never traveled with big suitcases since we started traveling in 2008). But on those trips, she would begin to realize that there were a lot of things she brought that she really didn't use or need, and slowly she has radically changed the way she packs, to my everlasting delight.

And now, let me turn it over to Eva:

Eva's Packing List

I definitely did not travel as lightly as Leo did. But, I think that I did a pretty good job of traveling light.

Here's my packing list, carried in one backpack.

In my 15-inch packing folder were:

  • a pair of shorts
  • underwear
  • 4 thin comfortable tank tops
  • a pair of pants with adjustable drawstring hem
  • a bathing suit
  • a sports bra

In a small pouch I had travel size toiletries:

  • facial wash
  • moisturizer
  • contact solution and lenses
  • deodorant)

I also packed:

  • a pair of shades
  • a book
  • my iPod shuffle and earbuds
  • camera with battery charger

When we left San Francisco I wore:

  • jeans
  • a tank
  • a light jacket/hoodie
  • my New Balance Minimus shoes — very comfortable and good for walking running and light hiking

While in Europe I realized that I really didn't need the jacket I wore or the extra pair of pants that I packed so I left them behind in one of the apartments.

I was very happy that we were each all able to travel with just one small bag and it saved me the trouble of having to keep track of extra luggage and the added stress of standing around at baggage claim. We made it through customs easily and avoided the long lines because of this.

I realized that it's OK to wear the same things over and over again. No one cares what you are wearing. They're too busy having a good time to even notice.

Having a big family means lots and lots of dirty laundry. I am so thankful that our kids agreed to minimal packing. They each packed three t-shirts and one extra pair of shorts/jeans. It made washing and folding so easy.

Packing lightly means that everyone (including the little ones) can be responsible for their own things. Our little ones (6 and 8 years old) did a very good job of repacking when it was time to leave one city to go to the next. They were able to carry their tiny backpacks the whole trip without being tired. We each packed for ourselves and I didn't have to pack anything extra in my bag or carry theirs.

Things I used to pack which I now realize I don't need:

  • Hair straightener and product — I simply tie my hair in a bun which is perfect when it's so hot.
  • Lotions shampoo conditioner toothpaste — just buy some when you get to your destination. They don't have to be the brand you're used to.
  • Extra pairs of shoes — find a pair that is comfortable and can be used for everything.
  • Fancy clothes/shoes — no need to pack these. You can buy a nice dress and pair of shoes if you decide that you'd like to go somewhere fancy otherwise there is no need.
  • Baby wipes or hand sanitizer — grab an extra napkin when you eat out and shove it in your pocket for later.

Therefore, that one negative thought leads to emotional displeasure, which creates an unfavorable reality.

In order to master the power of your mind, you have to completely change your mindset about the law of attraction. The following paradigm shift resulted in a MASSIVE change in my life: Instead of trying to control my thoughts, I decided to TRAIN MY MIND.

If a person can train to play the guitar, train to be a professional athlete, train to get a 6-pac, you too can train your mind to achieve success.

The key thing with the word "train" is improvement. It's building momentum. This word has a sort of "determination" towards it. Since you are training your mind, you can't give up right?

The good news is that training your mind is a lot easier than training to become a professional athlete! I'll give you three reasons why training your mind is simple:

1. Your job is to keep your mind clear of activity2. Your most important job is to not allow a single negative thought3. With a clear mind, you achieve a relaxed state and achieve emotional harmony!

The essence of what you are doing is training your mind to be totally relaxed, andAbsent of negativity. The challenge is to be conscious abo! ut this all the time. Don't worry though, as you build momentum, it will become first nature to you.

One of the most important points I want to highlight is that you don't need to try to focus specific thoughts. If you try to think of having all that money, you will be constantly reminded by your subconscious that you're broke. The key is to have your mind completely relaxed. There is no better feeling.

When your mind is completely relaxed, you are in harmony with your inner spirit. When you are in harmony with your inner spirit, everything you want will flow to you like the Mississippi river.

Even though staying power is so crucial to mastering your mind power, the vast majority of people are generally ready to throw in the towel at the first sign of difficulty they encounter. Unfortunately, only at relative few carry on until their mind power is under their control. To change your life for the better according to your wishes, QUITTING IS NOT AN OPTION! your focus and your efforts must continually be in the direction of your most cherished desires, your burning desires as Napoleon Hill states it.

Here is a quick and simple test you can take to determine if your desires are burning or not. Sit quietly for a while and calm your mind as much as you can. Bring one of your desires onto the screen of your mind. See yourself in your mind as already having possession of and thoroughly enjoying your desire. Focus on with all of your will. Now notice the positive emotions you begin to feel (These emotions must be positive, in other words, feel good). Using your will once again, intensify the emotions you are experiencing as much as you can. For there to be a burning desire, that feeling (or those feelings) must be stronger than any fear you can imagine related to experiencing your desire.

Sporadic hit and miss efforts will not do any more good for you than making an occasional fire will keep you warm through a freezing winter season. I am not suggesting that your efforts must begin at full speed as if you were running a sprint. Starting slowly is not a sin. In fact starting slowly might well be a blessing for you. Sustainability is what you should seek. Sustained focus and effort toward mastering your mind power is paramount.

You might as well know here and now that one or more of the myriad of fears lurking in your subconscious mind is going to surface the moment you begin your journey. The first fear that most people seem to have to face is the fear of criticism, the fear of what people might think or say. When your environment and the conditions around you scream to you t! hat you should stop fooling yourself, that all of your efforts are yielding no visible results, etc., quickly turn your attention away from such thoughts and bring your focus to your desires, your goals, your intentions.

Always take another step. Make another attempt, then another, and another. Never allow yourself to have the title of "quitter" attached to your name. Repeat your affirmation one more time. Think one more positive thought about your desires that evokes good feelings. It has not been given to you know how many steps are necessary, how many attempts you must make, how many times you must repeat an affirmation to experience your desires. If you persist, however, you will succeed.

Be like the ant that devours an elephant, the stream that sculpted the Grand Canyon, or the raindrop that washes away a mountain. Purge your mind of such words as quit, cannot, failure and impossible. If they should continue to appear, grab a thesaurus, find antonyms for each of those words that does appear and make them your new companions instead.

This I know for sure. You can claim or re-claim control of your own mind power and bring more of your desires into your experience. You are the most miraculous of all living beings on earth. You are the owner of a mind that is so stupendous, that as you truly begin mastering your mind power and consciously using it, there is no dream that you can dream that you cannot achieve...so long as you do not quit.

CHristine Hsu: Federal health officials have released a set of videos featuring the scientific research of how yoga works, the safety of yoga and whether yoga can help treat certain health problems.

The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) says that the videos can help viewers make informed decisions if they're interested in practicing the ancient Hindu meditation practice.

Here's what's new to our class schedules this May: Our Anderson schedule is expanding! We now offer 24 classes a week, including a wide variety of Hatha yoga classes, including Yin Yoga, Ashtanga Vinyasa, Taoist Yoga, Core Yoga, Meridian Exercises, Meditation, Prenatal Yoga, and Kids Yoga as well as our Sunday morning Tai Chi class! Our Downtown schedule continues to expand as well, with over 15 weekly opportunities to do yoga! For those that like their yoga to rise with the sun, we're happy to introduce at our Anderson Studio Rise & Shine Yoga on Mondays from 8-9am with Alex Ryberg and Wednesdays, 6-7am and 8-9am with Logan Dunbar. Rise & Shine Yoga will bring a feeling of fluidity, strength, and lightness that radiates throughout the rest of your day. There's no answer to "Why does the world exist?"

Here's the sort of spoiler alert that irritates me when it pops up in a movie review -- a warning about a giving away of the key plot element that's so close to the spoiler itself, I can't help but see what I'm not supposed to see if I want to keep the movie's meaning a surprise.

Ha-ha! If you read the title of this blog post, it's too late. You know. There's no answer to "Why does the world exist?"

Hope this doesn't ruin your day.

Probably it will, if you're a religious devotee, because likely you think that God is the reason the world exists. It might also be a bummer of an answer if you're a fervent believer in science, because some cosmologists hold out hope that a Theory of Everything could explain, well, everything. Including why the universe exists.

Now, why am I so confident in saying there's no answer? Because I've finished reading Jim Holt's book, "Why Does the World Exist?"

I recommend it highly.

Holt fulfills the promise of his subtitle, an existential detective story. There's lots of twists and turns as Holt travels around, interviewing scientists, religious types, philosophers, and others who have deeply pondered the classic question, "Why is there something rather than nothing?"

As I said recently in a post about Holt's book, I find an exclamatory statement much more interesting. "There is something rather than nothing." I feel this way partly because it seems obvious that no answer is possible to the question why existence?

Who the hell do we puny humans think we are? What makes us think we're capable of fathoming the ultimate mystery of existence? Assuming there's any mystery to fathom, which is another aspect of the mystery: Is there really any mystery involving existence?

Holt doesn't just listen to the people he interviews. Holt challenges them, questions their assumptions, tests the solidity of the foundation their existential theories rest on. In the end, he doesn't find any satisfying answers to "Why does the world exist?" 

But it's an entertaining ride to nowhere.

In an epilogue Holt describes a televised book chat show (hosted by Bernard Pivot) he watched while in Paris. The guests were a Dominican priest, a theoretical physicist, and a Buddhist monk. The subject was Why is there Something rather than Nothing?

Holt seems to reveal where his sympathies lie, even if he isn't convinced that any of the answers given is true. I also resonate with the Buddhist monk -- though not completely. (French punctuation marks are omitted in some passages below; deal with it, French speakers.)

The monk, attired in crimson and saffron robes, with bare shoulders and a freshly shaved head, has the most interesting line on the question. He also has the most pleasant demeanor. In contrast to the prim-mouthed Jesuit priest and the irritable old physicist, the monk beams happiness. A smile continuously plays about his lips.

As a Buddhist, he says, he believes that the universe had no beginning. Il n'ya pas de debut. Nothingness -- le neant -- could never give way to being, he says, because it is defined in opposition to that which exists. 

A billion causes could not make a universe come into existence out of what does not exist. That is why, the monk says, the Buddhist doctrine of a beginningless-less universe makes the most metaphysical sense. C'est encore plus simple.

So the philosophical/intellectual credibility of the Buddhist monk's views are bolstered by the blurb Jim Holt got from Hitchens, which is featured on the cover of "Why Does the World Exist?"

What makes you so sure that there's anything?

Somehow I doubt there ever will be a convincing answer to that question, just as Why is there something rather than nothing? likely will remain an eternal enigma. 

Holt talks about how some philosophers are repelled by the notion of a Brute Fact. Me, I'm not bothered. Existence is. Nothing more to say. Which reminds me of the ending quotation in Holt's book.

The way people's pupils react when they see other people is an effective way to assess sexual orientation, according to a new study.

The reactions of study participants' pupils revealed that heterosexual men responded most to images of women and homosexual men responded most to images of men.

Additionally, researchers found that homosexual women responded most to images of women, and heterosexual women expressed arousal in response to both men and women, though they were more likely to choose to watch men.

Previous studies have shown that people's pupils widen in response to seeing others who they find attractive; the new study showed that, indeed, a person's sexuality is evident in their pupils' responses.

Results also revealed that bisexual men were attracted to both men and women, an idea that has been disputed, and that heterosexual women may be aroused by both genders, despite being straight.

"The pupil reacts very quickly, and it is unconscious, so it's a method that gives us a subconscious indicator of sexuality," said lead study author Gerulf Rieger, a researcher at Cornell University.Sex researchers don't always want to rely on people's own reports about who they are sexually attracted to, because cultural and societal pressures can influence what people say, he explained.

The findings are detailed today (Aug. 3) in the journal PLoS ONE.

Reasons for women's arousal

Researchers asked about 300 study participants to watch 30-second videos of people of both sexes masturbating, and tracked the dilation of participants' pupils in response. The participants also watched simultaneous videos of males and females, and the researchers tracked where they spent more time looking.

The finding that heterosexual women are aroused by both genders is in line with other studies.

"The female brain is not as differentiated," said Sandra Witelson, a professor of psychiatry at the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine of McMaster University. "They don't have as strong a response for only men, as heterosexual men have for only women."

The female tendency to be aroused by both sexes may be because of female brain composition, Witelson said.

Study researcher Ritch Savin-Williams, a psychology professor at Cornell, said women's less-distinct preference for men may be the result of a defense mechanism that evolved to protect women from forced sexual intercourse. If a woman can become aroused with any sort of sexual simulation, the lubrication that results can protect her from injuries.

Bisexual men

The pupils of men in the study who identified themselves as bisexual responded similarly to videos of males and females, confirming that bisexuality truly exists in nature, Savin-Williams said.

This fact has been disputed because of past research suggesting that men who say they are bisexual actually respond only to men, in measurements of genital responses, he said. Some have suggested that being bisexual is not a true state of sexuality, and is instead a sign of someone transitioning to accept himself as being gay.

"I was surprised that the pupil tells us something more in line with what the people tell us, which is not what the penises tell us," Rieger said. In general, studies measuring genital responses are trickier, because such responses vary greatly between people, and are difficult to prompt naturally in a lab setting.

Studies on genital responses from Northwestern University researchers have also confirmed the possibility of male bisexuality, Rieger said.

Overall, the study results show that pupil dilation tests can be used to assess overarching trends in sexuality in a large population, not necessarily the sexual orientation of individuals, Savin-Williams said.

However, the researchers said pupil responses could possibly be used in the future for more specific measurements, like understanding the sexuality of someone on trial for a sex crime, Savin-Williams said.
