Why Teamwork Takes Pressure Off Some Olympic Athletes

Anyone watching U.S. Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas in her last two events (the individual finals for the uneven bars and balance beam) may wonder if the 16-year-old who helped the U.S. women win the gold in the team competition and captured the individual gold in the all-around is tuckered out — she fell off the beam, and faltered on the bars.

Whether Douglas' struggles were due to physical fatigue, mental weariness or another factor entirely isn't clear. However, research suggests that Olympic athletes face a tougher challenge in performing in individual competitions than in team events.

One reason for this is that the pressure to perform may be alleviated by team members, even while these teammates help push individuals to their limits, experts said.

When an athlete performs as part of a team, the pressure shifts from the weighing on the individual's shoulders to being a collective burden felt by the team, which tends to lighten the overall load, said Deb Feltz, professor of kinesiology at Michigan State University (MSU).

Pressure is an inherent part of the Olympics, Feltz said, but moving an athlete's focus away from his or her individual performances can help them "stay in the zone."

"At this stage of elite performance, these are pretty much automatic motor skills that can run off without a lot of conscious attention," Feltz said. But "this kind of world stage can bring that conscious attention back," she said.

The magic of teammates

Another aspect of team competition that benefits the individuals is the language team members use. Researcher Veronica Son, a sports psychology doctoral student at MSU who is originally from South Korea, said she became interested in the language differences she noticed between Korean and American cultures. Korean words emphasized the team, while English conversation accentuates the individual, she said.

In lab simulations, she randomly assigned teams of students to either repeat positive phrases focused on the individual ("I can do this") or on the team ("we can do this"). Those who focused on the team performed significantly better in the subsequent athletic task, the researchers found.

"The 'we' word has more power to build team unity and cohesion," Son said, because it helps team members believe in each other.  

Son pointed to the victory of the South Korean men's soccer team over Great Britain as an example of this phenomenon. The British ranked higher than their Korean competitors individually, but the Koreans' cohesion made them the stronger team, Son said.

In the lab, the "we statement" exercise improved the team members' confidence as well, in comparison to individuals who focused on themselves, Son found.

Furthermore, at the Olympics, athletes compete in honor of their country, said Kaitlynn Osborn, a doctoral student in sports psychology at MSU, noting that several Olympians cite competing on their nation's team as a main source of motivation.

The needs of the team

High-stakes events, such as team relays, tend to encourage the least successful athlete to make the biggest improvements in performance. Osborn looked at the individual times of swimming and track relay team members, and found that the weakest link of each team made the strongest improvement in the final race.

"The weakest ones end up performing better than they would do in an individual event," Osborn said. "They're not performing the best [of all team members], but their improvement is much greater" than that of their teammates.

The motivation behind such improvements comes from two sources, Osborn said. First, there is the sense of indispensability, which is the realization that one's performance matters most to the team's overall success. Second, there is social comparison, where individuals are inspired to perform more strongly to keep up with their teammates.

Where an athlete finds their greatest motivation may depend on gender, Osborn said. Women are more likely to improve due to feelings of indispensability, while men are more likely to respond to social pressure.

There are a lot of factors that can cause hair loss such as a genetic disorder, a hormonal imbalance or use of heavy chemicals that can retard the growth of hair follicles. However, not a lot of people know that stress is the leading cause of hair loss for both men and women. Not that many people know how serious of a cause it is. It can largely affect how long you hold on to your prized hair. It can be simply heartbreaking to lose hair especially for women. The good news is that stress is something you can prevent.

Stress can be caused by a variety of things. It could be work-related or something to do with your family. It can be the approaching birthday that you hate making you another year older. The most usual stressor is your work, and issues on marriage and family are only second to this.

But you can easily let go of stress. It is obvious that what you need to do to prevent losing your hair is to avoid all things that can cause stress. If you are a person who still worries about work at the end of the day, then what you can do is to drink some wine or take a hot bath. Join a meditative exercise class such as yoga to help you relax after a hard day. Get a regular massage, do some breathing exercises, or have a quiet dinner with your favorite friends.

Even brisk walks are good enough to let go of the stress building up inside you. This is a way to exercise your body, which is another remedy for losing hair. Exercising releases endorphins which is responsible for improving one's mood, which can help you manage stress better. Try to visit the gym at least once every week. You will definitely see a reduction in your hair loss problem.

The important thing to remember is to not stress about everything. Do not even stress about losing your hair. You are not the only one having to deal with this condition; in fact this is one of the most common problems both men and women have to deal with. Gonorrhea Now Resistant to One of Last Drugs, CDC Warns

The sexually transmitted disease gonorrhea has developed resistance to yet another drug, which now leaves just one medication that is effective against the disease, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Over the last several decades, the bacteria that cause gonorrhea have developed resistance to many antibiotics used to treat the condition, including penicillin, tetracycline and fluoroquinolones. That left just one class of drugs, called cephalosporins — which include the drugs cefixime and ceftriaxone — to be used as treatment.

But today, the CDC announced it no longer recommends cefixime, an oral medication, as a first-line treatment for gonorrhea, citing data over the last several years that show gonorrhea has become increasingly resistant to the drug.

That means ceftriaxone — an antibiotic delivered by injection — is the last effective treatment for the condition, health officials say.

"Treatment of patients with gonorrhea with the most effective therapy will limit the transmission of gonorrhea, prevent complications, and likely will slow emergence of resistance," the CDC report says.

But because health officials expect that gonorrhea will eventually become resistant to ceftriaxone, new treatment options are urgently needed, the CDC says.

Gonorrhea is caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhea and is spread through sexual activity. People with gonorrhea often show no symptoms, but the disease can lead to serious complications, including infertility and chronic pelvic pain in women, and in men, epididymitis, a painful inflammation of the ducts attached to the testicles that may cause infertility if left untreated, according to the CDC. If the bacteria spread to the blood or joints, the condition can be life-threatening, the CDC says.

There were more than 300,000 cases of gonorrhea reported to the CDC in 2011.

Between 2006 and 2011, the dosage of cefixime needed to prevent growth of gonorrhea strains circulating in the United States increased, suggesting that the drug's effectiveness was waning. And there were reports from other countries that the recommended dose of cefixime did not cure the condition in some patients.

This recent lab data, and gonorrhea's history of developing resistance to other antibiotics, prompted the CDC to change its treatment recommendations, the report said.

Now, to treat uncomplicated gonorrhea cases, the CDC recommends ceftriaxone along with another antibiotic, such as azithromycin or doxycycline, for seven days.

Patients that are not cured by this treatment should be tested to see if they are infected with a resistant strain, the CDC says.

The CDC hopes the new rules to limit cefixime use will help preserve ceftriaxone as a treatment option for a little longer.

The new recommendations will be published tomorrow (August 10) in the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

Mind Over Body, Body Over Mind

"The relation that exists between the mind and the body is very intimate. When one is affected, the other sympathizes. The condition of the mind affects the health to a far greater degree than many realize. Many of the diseases from which men suffer are the result of mental depression. Grief, anxiety, discontent, remorse, guilt, distrust, all tend to break down the life forces and to invite decay and death.

Courage, faith, hope, sympathy, and love promote health and prolong life. A contented mind and a cheerful spirit is health to the body and strength to the soul. 'A merry heart doeth good like a medicine.' Proverbs 17:22" Ministry of Healing pg.241

A new field of scientific investigation has begun in the last thirty years that specializes in how the mind and body affects each other. I would like to site some of the investigation that shows how the mind plays a part in disease. Let's begin by discovering some of the mysteries of the brain.

In the early 1960's a Russian researcher in the Soviet Union, Elena Korneva, was studying the hypothalamus, a small part of the brain. When she damaged different parts of the hypothalamus, different changes occurred in the immune system.

Psychiatrist George Solomon repeated some of Korneva's experiments, with the same results. When he damaged the hypothalamus, the activity of the thymus gland was slowed. The thymus gland, which rests over the heart, makes and controls white blood cells.

When French brain researcher Gerard Renoux of the Medical School of Tours removed a third of the left side of an animal's brain, the number of white blood cells in the spleen decreased. The spleen is the storage place for white blood cells.

Dr. Bennet Braun studied people with multiple personalities. He found that as the personalities shifted in his patients, disease changes also occurred. Doctors had trouble diagnosing one woman's diabetes because she had it in only one of her personalities.

As part of her doctoral dissertation at the! Univers ity of California, San Diego, neuroanatomist Karen Bulloch discovered that the thymus of the rat is laced with fibers of the vagus nerve, which is one of twelve nerves that comes directly from the brain instead of through the spinal cord. Remember the thymus has a lot of influence on the immune system and makes white blood cells. Bullock too a mouse born without a thymus and placed a piece of thymus in its chest. In a matter of time, nerve fibers from the animal's body began infiltrating the implanted thymus tissue, groping for a connection to the missing gland. This is highly unusual since it is rarely heard of for new nerve tissue to grow.

In work done at Indiana University, David Felten, John Williams, and others used special fluorescent dyes to trace the pathways of nerves. The discovered nerve networks in the spleen, lymph nodes, anfd bone marrow as well as in the thymus.

Swiss based Argentine researcher, Hugo Besedovsky, wired a rat's hypothalamus and then measured its electrical activity. He next injected the rat with some strong bacteria, and watched to see of the hypothalamus became more active as the immune system fought harder against the disease. The frenzied immune activity was mirrored by a more than 100 percent increase of brain electrical activity.Until recently, science thought that the part of the brain that controlled the body functions and the thinking part of the brain were unconnected, that no communication occurred between them. But recently a part of the brain called the reticular activating system has come to be better understood. It has been found to be the intercom of communication between the frontal lobes of the cerebral cortex and the hypothalamus and the brain stem. Plus the thalamus connects the cerebral cortex with other parts of the brain. Our conscious thought does affect our bodies, and the health of our bodies does affect our thoughts. University of Iowa psychiatrist Dr. Ziad Kronfol tested the blood of scores of his depressed patients and found that their! immune systems were less responsive than those of normal individuals.

Psychologist Paul Ekman of the University of California at San Francisco asked actors to pretend surprise, disgust, sadness, anger, fear, and happiness or simply relive in their minds a past experience characterized by one of these feelings. By measuring heartbeat and skin temperature, Ekman wasnot only able to differentiate positive and negative emotions, but to identify the negative emotion an actor was miming through body measurements. If this is true, what effect does watching television have on us?

As you can see, the mind and body are closely and intimately connected together. Let us seek after God to have peace of mind so that we might also have health.

How to meditate using proper posture and mindful relaxation

Your posture affects your mind so good posture while practicing mindfulness meditation is vital to your success. When you sit down either cross-legged on the floor or upright in a chair with your feet touching the floor, spend some time getting your posture just right. You should feel like your spine is being pulled up from the top of your head and then settle in. Your shoulders and hips should be level, your spine strong and stacked. If you feel hazy or drowsy, make sure your posture is correct. You also should hol! d a soft gaze in a downward direction, a couple of inches in front of your nose to minimize distractions.

When thoughts come up while you are practicing mindfulness meditation, observe them and return to focusing on your breathing. If you find that your mind begins to wander, simply take note of where it went, let it go and don't judge yourself harshly.

Mindfulness meditation is a simple practice that teaches you to do a lot while you are doing nothing at all. When your meditation time comes to an end, sit for a couple of minutes to increase your awareness further, then slowly get up and go about your day.

Imagine that you're looking into a glass fish tank filled with the purest water.  There is only water.  Then you put a pound of fine dirt into the fish tank, mixing it well.  Then you wonder, can I still see the pure water?  The water has been obscured by adventitious fine dirt.  Yes, the water is still there but not like before.  If you had never before seen the pure water, the muddy fish tank would naturally be your starting point: the accepted norm, in other words.  It would follow that any thought of being able to filter out what is adventitious to pure water would be unthinkable.

We have to think of the Buddha's great project as kind of like filtering out the fine dirt from our once pure water in the fish tank.  Granted that this is an analogy, which means it isn't perfect, but it serves, nevertheless, to illustrate what meditation is really about and the problems the West has with it, not to mention Soto Zen's emphasis on sitting.

In light of the previously mentioned, our muddy fish tank problem breaks down into two schools of thought.  Those who say that the muddy liquid we see is external and adventitious to the original water, and those who believe there is no such thing as pure water: the present fish tank condition is normal.  This is the way things are.

Turning to Buddhism, it also has two schools of thought which are a part of its long development.  There are those who understand that nirvana is really pure Mind which has freed itself from its former fixation on the adventitious nature of phenomena.  The other school of thought, is primarily focused upon the adventitious nature of phenomena, itself, that it is impermanent, suffering, and, more importantly, there is no self.  Somehow nirvana is supposed to come out of this.  But this nirvana is really only death that has been repackaged for public consumption.  One believes that death ends all.  

From the above, it is fair to say that the majority follow the second school of thought.  They are content to believe that this is the only world where, as much as we look, we will only find impermanence, suffering, and no self.  Yes, it is a hard, cruel world.  But death is the answer.  Just live your life as you see fit, keeping in mind that death is the great purifier—the cosmic shot of morphine. 

Back to the fish tank.  With the proper filtering apparatus we can separate the pure water from the dirt.  Turning again to Buddhism, the Buddha tried to teach his followers how to distinguish pure Mind from its adventitious defilements by first believing that it can be done.  Thanks to my faith in the Buddha's teachings I did it many years ago.  It is an epiphany hard to imagine but, nevertheless, one that is real and powerful.  Those who say it is not possible work for Mara the Evil One.  They may even wear Buddhist robes while wallowing in the mud of the world.  And they call this the Buddha's enlightenment.

"Hot") Yoga began more as a scheduling convenience than devotion to its unvarying regimen of 26 poses (asanas), each performed twice and held for what can seem like forever over the course of the nearly two-hour class.Yoga comes in almost as many guises as there are yoga instructors, but most classes build on the same basic foundation of poses performed sitting, standing and lying down. Although some, like the Sun Salutation, consist of a progression of steps, more often the goal is to work gradually toward a single ideal shape: the bow, the triangle, the cobra. My needs are simple: I want supervised, intensive stretching, and every yoga class I've ever attended offers at least that.The truth is, I hated this Bikram class when I started. At first I returned only because I was desperate -- the victim of a muscle-kinking bout of business travel (cramped airline seats and strange beds). Our teacher, Leah Weisman, seemed to talk incessantly. The room was always full, from 30 to 50 people. An! d the sp ace was intentionally overheated.True Hot Yoga requires a room temperature as high as 105?F, supposedly so muscles warm up quickly and stretch more easily. This gym's drafty old studio achieves only Balmy Yoga -- about 81?F -- which is just as well. Of the group that lost weight from a combination of diet and exercise, 17 pounds on average, instances of involuntary passing of urine as a result of stress incontinence was cut by nearly 50%. There was no noticeable reduction in urge or overactive bladder incontinence.

The study concluded that the extra pressure applied to the bladder by the excess poundage had a direct impact on the condition. Brain Changes Seen in People Who Stutter with 1-Week Therapy

For people who stutter, going to speech therapy for just one week may help reorganize their brain and reduce the speech disorder, according to a new study from China.

The researchers studied the brains of 28 people who stuttered,and 13 other healthy people, before and after half the stutterers underwent a week of intensive speech therapy. Not only did the stutterers who received the therapy experience improvements in their speech, the improvements were also reflected in their brain scans, the researchers found.

"These results show that the brain can reorganize itself with therapy," said study author Chunming Lu, of China's Beijing Normal University.

Of the study participants who stuttered, 15 underwent thrice-daily therapy sessions for one week, in which they practiced speaking aloud by repeating words spoken to them, or reading aloud.

In the brain scans done prior to the therapy, researchers found two differencesbetween participants who stuttered and non-stutterers: stutterers had less interactivity in the part of the brain responsible for speech, but had increased interactions in one part of the cerebellum.

After the week of therapy, new brain scans showed that cerebellum interactions in the stutterers decreased, and were equal to those of the non-stutterers.

This reduction in activity shows that "changes in the cerebellum are a result of the brain compensating for stuttering," Lu said, and it suggests that therapy can reverse these changes.

Brain interactivity in the speech area remained unchanged, the researchers found.

Stuttering affects 1 percent of people, the researchers noted.

The study was published today (August 8) in Neurology.

The combinations are endless but the root of them as men and women who become leaders of the world past and present are simply due to the environments and emotions that they were exposed to as they were developing from curious children to adults. In its most basic form, this is the philosophy behind the technology that is subliminal messaging. Our subconscious mind - the nexus and control centre that drives our emotions and behaviours, responds to stimulation that goes beyond visible and auditory.

C-Sections May Not Provide the Brain Benefits of Vaginal Birth

Being born by Ceasarian section may have a lasting effect on the brain, at least in mice, according to a new study.

In the study, mice born by a vaginal birth produced a brain protein called UCP2, which is important for the development of the hippocampus, a brain area responsible for short- and long-term memory.

However, in mice born by C-section, production of UCP2 was impaired, and these mice had less of this protein in their brains compared to vaginally-born mice, said study researcher Tamas Horvath, chair of the department of comparative medicine at Yale School of Medicine.

The researchers also found that in mice that were engineered to not produce any UCP2, the number and size of nerve cells in the hippocampus was reduced, as was the number of connections between nerve cells. When these mice grew up, they had impaired performance in a maze test designed to measure their memory and cognition.

The results show how important this protein is in the development of the brain and behavior, Horvath said. "The increasing prevalence of C-sections, driven by convenience rather than medical necessity, may have a previously unsuspected lasting effect on brain development and function in humans as well," he said.

However, Horvath emphasized, much more work is needed before we know whether the findings apply to people. Even if C-sections do affect UCP2 production in human brains, the types of behavior changes seen in people may be different than those seen in mice, Horvath said.

Studies in people could follow participants over time to look for differences in learning and memory in those born by C-section, compared with those born vaginally, Horvath said.

Previous studies have found babies born by C-section are at increased risk for childhood obesity.

Horvath and colleagues have been studying UCP2 for many years, and stumbled upon the C-section finding by chance.

Normally, UCP2 production is triggered by stress, and the protein is thought to help cells survive in stressful environments. It's possible the physical stress of passing through the birth canal triggers UCP2 in newborns, Horvath said.

The protein also helps cells metabolize fat, a key component of breast milk. Horvath and colleagues speculate that the protein may help babies transition to breastfeeding.

The study is published in the August issue of the journal PLoS ONE.

Pass it on: Future research should look at the effect of C-sections on human brains, as studies in mice suggest natural birth may be needed to trigger production of a critical brain protein.
