Monks at Musikfest [Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania] will set the tone for a peaceful yet energetic festival this year.

The Tibetan monks of the Drepung Loseling Monastery will perform for several days, starting with a mandala sand painting ceremony noon Thursday at Handwerkplatz and ending with the closing ceremony 6:30 p.m. Aug. 6 when the monks will hand out half of the sacred sand to audience members and then pour the other half into a nearby body of water to spread its healing properties throughout the world.

Hazard: When the chair support bar is not fully engaged, the chair poses a fall hazard to a consumer who sits in the partially engaged chair.

Incident/Injuries: The firm has received thirteen reports of consumers who fell from partially opened chairs, resulting in reports of back injuries, contusions and scrapes.

Description: This recall involves folding chairs sold with three-piece patio bistro sets. Each set contains two folding chairs and a folding table. The chairs have a black steel frame and dark stained wooden seats and backs. Model #S658-01, item # 0355053 and "Garden Treasures" is printed on the cover of the instruction manual sold with the patio bistro sets.

Sold exclusively at: Lowe's stores nationwide from August 2011 through February 2012 for about $ 98 for the set.

But that can keep you from starting if you don't know of a meditation teacher in your area. Fortunately you can learn meditation from a book, from a guided audio mp3 or CD, or online. Technology is helping to bring ancient practices like meditation more and more into the mainstream culture.

Heart Rhythm Meditation (HRM) is an ancient practice that came from the eastern world like most forms of meditation. The way Heart Rhythm Meditation works is by creating a rhythm between your heartbeat and your breath, for example, 8 beats inhale, 8 beats exhale. You can start by finding a pulse point on your wrist or neck and using that to time your inhales and exhales. It's simple, and it takes only a bit of practice to master. By listening to your heartbeat, you strengthen your heart.

This practice of synchronizing the breath and heartbeat creates a powerful rhythm in your body that strengthens your heart by creating entrainment in your heart rate variability.

In addition to the many heart benefits you will quiet your mind. In this meditation practice we focus on our heartbeat or pulse which is the primary clock for the body. The pulse is a much slower rhythm than the mind. So placing attention on our heartbeat has the effect of slowing our minds and making us aware of our internal clock. This is comforting.

The first sound an unborn child ever hears is the sound of the mother's heartbeat. And the first organ to develop in ! the chil d is the heart. We are comforted by this sound.

Here's what the techniques actually consist of:

1. Posture. Sit upright in a chair with your hands on your lap and let your eyes close. Open your chest area and sit royally. You are engaged in a noble endeavor.2. Conscious Breath. Connect with your normal, everyday breathing. Follow the inhales and exhales. Let your breath begin to deepen and slow.3. Rhythmic Breath. Let your breath find an easy rhythm and make your inhales and exhales approximately the same length.4. Full Breath. As your breathing becomes slower and deeper and quieter and more rhythmic you will feel the effects of oxygenating your blood with a full breath. Your whole body will feel energized from this.5. Pulse and Heartbeat. Hold the breath after a complete inhale a few seconds and see if you can feel your heart beating in your chest. In addition, find a contact point on your wrist or neck like a nurse would and find your pulse. The pulse is the echo of the heartbeat.6. Swinging Breath. Now as you exhale, count the number of heartbeats or pulses that you feel and try to exhale for 6 or 8 beats. Then inhale for 6 or 8 beats. This makes your inhales and exhales the same length, as measured by your pulse.Enjoy the synchronicity of breath and heartbeat. This is home-base for heart rhythm meditation. Full, conscious breathing with awareness of pulse/heartbeat. Try it for 5 or 10 minutes at first and you will probably get it and feel it and enjoy it! Then try and work up to 20 minutes over time. This is the beginning of your new meditation practice.

Do some people really know how to read a mind?

Let me start by saying that each of us has that 'personal private space' which we call our thoughts. Our physical privacy can be violated. Someone may look through the keyhole of your bedroom as you change your clothes. Someone may scan the messages in your inbox without you knowing it. Someone can even go as far as snoop in your bedroom, looking for your oh-so-treasured diary where you express your most utmost feelings. All these are manifestations of your physical privacy being violated. It does happen, and it doesn't show signs of not happening in the near future.

But how about our minds? Can people (not literally) open our minds and read what it contains? Can you look at someone's eyes for 20 seconds, stare deep enough in those pupils and actually reach his mind? Is it really possible? Where science can bombard you with scientific terminologies and theories that are sure to confuse you, here are ordinary answers which hopefully, can shed some light into this issue. At the end is a realization that you have hopefully found after reading this article.

First thing's first: The person whose mind you attempt to read must not want his mind to be read. It's useless to read his mind if he is more than willing to freely express his thoughts. In this case, you wouldn't be needing tips on how to read a mind. Once you've established that the person really does not want you to read his mind, proceed by asking the simple questions.

For instance, if you're married, and it's already 2 in the morning and your partner hasn't come home yet, once he or she actually arrives home, DO NOT bombard him with intrusive questions. Instead, ask him simple, plain ones. You can begin by asking "So, how was the event you attended?"

By asking questions like these, your partner wouldn't get the impression that you're trying to investigate his coming home late. He would feel that you're actually just plainly asking. Couple this question with a smil! e, and it's more than probable that your partner would feel that you're really just asking, not probing.

If asking simple questions does not cut it, you can switch to using simple caring statements. Sweet nothings like "I was beginning to be worried. You should have texted me" can really do the trick and squeeze the truth out of someone. These heart-wrenching lines, whether you really meant them or not, are almost guaranteed to make a person spill his beans.

One thing has to be made clear here: The two methods expressed here are not fool-proof ways on how to read a mind. In reality, there hasn't been a proven way to read a person's mind. There is a reason why each person's 'personal private space' remains exactly that - 'personal and private' - after thousands of years of human existence. These methods are just less intrusive (thus more effective) ways of forcing the truth out of someone who's determined to hide it. After all, sometimes knowing the truth beats the hell out of having some mystical mind reading power.

Pregnancy Alters Gut Bacteria

Pregnancy changes not only the way a woman's tummy looks, but the community of bacteria living within her gut, according to a new study.

During the first trimester of the study subjects' pregnancies, researchers found little variation in the makeup of gut bacterial communities from woman to woman, and between pregnant and non-pregnant women.

During the third trimester, however, gut bacteria varied greatly from woman to woman, and there was less diversity of gut bacteria within any given woman, the study found.

"The findings suggest that our bodies have co-evolved with the microbiota and may actually be using them as a tool to help alter the mother's metabolism, to support the growth of the fetus," said study researcher Ruth Ley of Cornell University.

Ley and colleagues obtained stool samples from 91 pregnant women during each trimester of pregnancy and analyzed the bacteria present.

They found that bacteria typically linked with good health decreased over the course of pregnancy, while bacteria associated with diseases generally increased. In addition, signs of inflammation in the gut increased.

These changes in gut bacteria may play a role in changing a pregnant woman's metabolism, the researchers said. Two changes that happen during pregnancy are an increase in the amount of body fat, and reduced sensitivity to insulin, the hormone that controls blood sugar.

In obese people, these changes are hallmarks of an unhealthy metabolism. But during pregnancy, the researchers said, the changes are healthy: They help the fetus to grow and prepare the mother's body for the energy that will be needed during breast-feeding.

Exactly what brings on the changes isn't clear, but the findings suggest that what a woman eats doesn't matter. "The changes in gut microbes were not related to diet, so we think the immune system or hormones play a role," Ley said.

The researchers also transferred gut bacteria samples from women in each trimester to healthy, germ-free mice. They found that mice treated with the bacteria from the third trimester gained weight and had higher levels of inflammation and poorer sugar metabolism than mice treated with bacteria from the first trimester.

The basis of the interactions between a person's metabolism and her gut microbes — which can alter blood sugar regulation, and may underlie much of the current obesity epidemic — may lie in reproductive biology, the researchers concluded.

The study will be published Friday (Aug. 3) in the journal Cell.

Pro-Mammogram Statistics Draw Challenge

A breast cancer awareness campaign by the research advocacy group Susan G. Komen for the Cure overstated the benefit that mammograms have on survival rates of women with breast cancer, researchers say in a new editorial.

Komen's messages in its 2011 campaign stated that 98 percent of women who get the screening tests survive at least five years, while 23 percent of women who do not get mammograms survive that long — a difference of 75 percentage points.

In an online editorial in the British Medical Journal, however, two researchers argue that randomized controlled trials have shown mammograms reduce the risk of dying from the disease by far less. For example, among those with breast cancer who are in their 60s, the risk of dying over a 10-year period is reduced from 83 percent to 56 percent — a difference of 27 percentage points.

"The ad campaign doesn't present screening as a genuine choice — it suggests you'd have to be crazy or stupid not to get screened," said editorial author Dr. Steven Woloshin, a professor at Dartmouth College's Geisel School of Medicine. Whether or not to get screened is actually a "genuine decision, because there are benefits and harms," Woloshin said.

A Komen spokesman defended the campaign statements. "The numbers are not in question. Early detection allows for early treatment, which gives women the best chance of surviving breast cancer," Komen vice president Chandini Portteus said.

The reasons for screening

Woloshin called whether to get screened a personal decision that should be based on factors including age and family history. For example, younger women are less likely to have breast cancer in general, but those with a strong family history of the disease might want to be screened earlier.

Screening has been associated with a decrease in mortality due to breast cancer, but the decrease is not as dramatic as Komen suggested, said Harvard Medical School radiologist Dr. Daniel Kopans.

Randomized control trials have found, in general, that screening reduces the number of lives lost to breast cancer by approximately 30 percent, said Kopans. In the U.S., deaths due to breast cancer also have decreased by about 30 percent since screening was instated in the 1980s.

"Thirty percent fewer women die each year from breast cancer than would have without screening," Kopans said, noting that part of this benefit is due to improvements in treatments for earlier stages of the disease. "Therapy saves lives when you find cancer early," he said.

Still, critics of mammograms say they can produce false alarms that lead to unnecessary biopsies.Portteus' reply: "Everyone agrees that mammography isn't perfect, but it's the best widely available detection tool that we have today."

A misleading advertisement

Komen's campaign was promoted last October and was designed and funded by the Komen foundation, which has raised over $ 1.9 billion for breast cancer awareness, research and support to patients.

Woloshin and his co-author, Lisa M Schwartz of Dartmouth, argue that the survival statistics used to support the Koman message about screening were misleading. This was a "disingenuous representation of statistics," Woloshin said, because screening adds a "lead time" between when cancer is found and when it becomes dangerous.

For instance, the authors wrote, consider a group of women who aren't screened but find a breast lump at age 67, and are subsequently diagnosed. If these women all die at age 70, their five-year survival rate is 0 percent. Now imagine another group of women, who were screened and diagnosed with breast cancer at age 64. If these women also all die at age 70, their five-year survival rate is 100 percent — even though both groups lived to the same age.

Organizations pushing cancer screening "have their work cut out for them," Kopans said. "They're trying to convince women to take a test that nobody wants to take." In this case Komen exaggerated, he said.

The problem of overdiagnosis

The issue of screening is further made controversial by the problem of overdiagnosis: Some women are treated with chemotherapy or surgery even though their cancers would never become dangerous or affect their lives, Woloshin said.

Randomized control trials have found that overdiagnosis occurs in 1 percent to 10 percent of screening cases, Kopans said. He said, however, this risk is worth the number of lives that are ultimately saved by screening.

Women should base their decisions on whether to be screened by weighing the facts and consulting with their doctors, Woloshin said. The Komen website does provide accurate information on the benefits and harms of screening, he said.

Woloshin said he hopes Komen reconsiders their use of statistics if they run a similar ad campaign this October.

The paper was published today (August 2) in the British Medical Journal.
