Stress May Increase Susceptibility to Infections

Article by David Crawford

When attacked by bacteria or viruses, the healthy body mobilizes its navy, air force, army, and marines so quickly that no infection occurs. These armed forces consist of lymph cells, white blood cells, antibodies, or globulins, which are ineffective without a co-worker, the complement. The viruses, and their toxins by engulfing and digesting them with the aid of enzymes or by combining with them, causing them to settle out, or by other means. An adequate diet can quickly increase all of these defenses even after an infection gets a foothold provided various nutrients are given in generous amounts the minute the first symptoms appear. The body's armed forces are identical regardless of the location of the infection or the types of viruses or bacteria involved. Because a physician is rarely consulted until illness is advanced, each individual should know the immediate steps to take to fight an infection.

The Effect of Stress

The adrenal hormone DOC is so completely held in check by the excessive amounts of cortisone produced during stress that the body often cannot protect itself and infections may become rampant, as they frequently do when cortisone medication is given. If the adrenals are too exhausted to produce an adequate amount of cortisone, however, DOC is not sufficiently held in check, and lymph glands, such as the tonsils and adenoids, become enlarged; the white blood count soars; and inflammation at the point of the infection is marked by redness, swelling, pain, and fever. When one is under stress, therefore, whether too much or too little cortisone is being produced, the body becomes susceptible to infections.

During most infections, too little aldosterone can be produced, sodium is lost from the body, cells become more permeable, or sieve like, and water accumulates in the inflamed area, increasing the swelling and pain. After the blood sodium has thus been replaced, swelling often goes down in a few moments and other symptoms disappear.

The lymph glands prod! uce anti bodies to fight infections. If cortisone is being synthesized normally, the proteins in these glands are broken down and the glands shrivel during the stresses that have preceded and are imposed by the bacterial or viral attack. Swollen lymph glands, such as those under the chin and behind the ears, or enlarged tonsils or adenoids always show that cortisone is not being produced in adequate amounts. Although the swollen glands are trying to fight the infection, the defense mechanisms are weak at the very time they are needed most. To recover from an infection, therefore, the first step must be to stimulate adrenal function.

Since pantothenic acid is essential for cortisone production, low resistance to spontaneous infections is the first sign of an under supply of pantothenic acids Infections appear long before other deficiency symptoms can be detected and more quickly than if any other nutrient were missing.' Animals even mildly deficient in pantothenic acid or vitamin B6 show an immediate marked reduction in antibodies, complement, and white blood cells; and if "vaccinated," immunity is not increased. Some strains of rats-and also certain families or individuals--require many times more pantothenic acid than others and are far more harmed by a deficiency.

In volunteers lacking pantothenic acid and vitamin B6, so few antibodies and white blood cells could be produced that they had continuous infections, particularly sore throats, or acute pharyngitis; and when vaccinated for tetanus, typhoid, and polio, showed no increase in antibody production. When stress has not harmed the adrenal or lymph glands too severely, giving 40 milligrams of vitamin B6 to persons with infections increased both the white blood count and the antibody production within three hours. Recovery was slow, however, even when such huge amounts as 4,000 and 600 milligrams of pantothenic acid and vitamin B6 respectively were given daily to volunteers who had been deficient in these vitamins for several weeks. In fact, 17 o! ut of 18 patients lacking vitamin B6 showed an "absolute decrease" in white blood cells in five days.

A diet under supplied with vitamins B1, B2, folic acid, biotin, or niacin inhibits the production of antibodies, white blood cells, and the complement, though less severely than when pantothenic acid or vitamin B6 is limited. A lack of any of these vitamins also prevents the body's defenses from being stimulated when antitoxins and other forms of immunization are given.

Breast Reduction: It Should Not Be Taken Lightly

Posted: 15 Aug 2012 08:00 AM PDT

Article by Abigail Aaronson

Breast reduction surgery should only be undertaken when a woman is facing serious physical or emotional stress from the size of her chest. It is a potential solution for back, neck and shoulder pain or poor posture. The self-consciousness and embarrassment makes some women feel uncomfortable in their own skin to the point of limiting their social life.

However, these types of procedures are by far the most invasive of plastic surgery and should only be considered if non-surgical options have been exhausted and the size of the breasts is of a real health concern.

For women on the borderline the best thing that can be done is to enact a regimen of diet and exercise. This can reduce the size of women with a large amount of fatty tissue and may make the procedure unnecessary. If it is instead a matter of too large an amount of glandular tissue than perhaps the woman is a good candidate for the operation.

With this in mind there are a number of reasons that a person may choose to have breast reduction surgery. A common reason for surgical treatment is that women feel they cannot perform certain daily activities. Anything from running to playing tennis can be negatively impacted by unwieldy chests. They can make it difficult to bend over or to sit or drive comfortably. If any of these problems are afflicting a woman than perhaps breast reduction should be taken into consideration.

Another frequent complaint is back pain this is probably the most common reason women opt for mammoplasty. There can be a significant weight associated with this problem and it can lead to severe and very painful condition. Frequent and chronic back pain is the most relevant reason to consider this surgery.

There are on the other hand many more poor reasons for choosing breast reduction surgery. The number one reason not to have this done is that a partner said a woman should. It is the woman's body and as such it should be her decision. If she is happy with the way she looks she should not change ! it to su it the desires of others. This is a very serious and potentially dangerous procedure and should not be taken lightly.

Along the same lines no one should undergo a procedure simply because they saw someone else that had it done and they looked great. Her reasons for having breast reduction could be much more personal than simply physical appearance.

Above all this procedure is not a simple thing to have done just to change one's appearance. It is a drastic surgically invasive procedure that should only be done in cases where there is no other option and not having it done would lead to serious health concerns.

Meditation and Angel Guided Meditation For People Who Find It Difficult To Take Time Out To Meditate

Posted: 15 Aug 2012 07:00 AM PDT

Article by Glenn Harrison

Why do people find it so difficult to meditate?

Jill , my wife, and I were having teachings from Ascended Master Lord Sananda (Jesus) a few weeks ago. Jill is an Avatara, an Angel Messenger who receives messages from the angelic realm, but is also capable of going into trance and allowing angels to talk through her. To do this, you have to be a 'clear channel' which means you have let go of ego, to do this.

Sananda was telling us that when he was connected to the Creator, and walked as Jesus Christ, he and his disciples would rise at sunrise and sit in the rising sunlight, meditating, absorbing the sunlight, to give them the best start to the day.

He then explained that, for us, on awakening, we should meditate and visualise filling our bodies with sunlight, to give us our best start to the day.

The Creator is Light Energy. We are condensed light. All matter is condensed light. Sunlight to us, is like a charge is to a battery. It re-charges, boosts our immune system, heals and enables growth. Yesterday was a sunny day for us here in the UK, and we don't get many of them. I went into our local town shops, and as I walked in, noticed an old woman sit down on a bench, lean back and raise her face to the Sun with her eyes closed, just like she was recharging her batteries. Do you do that too?

So if we can take time out to sit, sometimes, and take in the Sun's rays, why is it so difficult for people to take time out and meditate? Yesterday it came to me why, so I felt a need to share it with you.

When Sananda walked as Jesus, there were no watches or clocks. Time was sensed by sunlight and star movements. No distractions like TV, radio, computers, telephones, mobile phones, cinemas, restaurants, shops, amusements, cars, motorbikes, planes, decorating, materialistic clothes. There were no books for the masses. People listened to story tellers.

Our lives today are consumed by a new religion we are slaves to money.

We have become slaves to money and the Il! luminati keep us in fear by enticing us to get into debt with consumerism. This creates a massive difference in available time for us personally, compared to when Jesus walked the Earth.

Is it any wonder we struggle to find time to meditate?

God, light, the one conscious energy gave us food and water to grow, but also gave us meditation, to stay connected.

We understand we need food and water to survive, but only need meditation, to grow, spiritually. But that's not all it does is it, because it helps us heal, helps reduce stress, which in turn reduces blood pressure.

Over time, Christian Religion, in particular, has programmed us away from meditation in the Western World. Why? Because the powers in Christianity have not wanted us to connect directly to the Creator, since it diminishes their power and control over the masses.

Why is it that one religion can have over 38,000 denominations where the leader believes their Christian church or ministry knows better?

The angelic realm are urging us to get back to meditation, once in a morning to start the day with light-energy, peace and calmness, and once in the evening to recharge ourselves; as a minimum.

If you struggle to meditate. If you have tried meditation to connect to the angelic realm, and have given up. If you feel that you will never get meditation right, it is only because you haven't had the right guidance. Would you attempt to read a book, before being taught how to read? Would you attempt to write a letter to someone before being taught how to write? Would you try and drive a car on a busy road, before being taught how to drive?

And what about cooking, cleaning, speaking your language, sport, games pastimes? Many things in life have to be taught, and it's no different with meditation. So don't give up, but remember, just like with all other things that are taught, there are good teachers and bad teachers. Be discerning when you read about meditation. Who are they? Where do they get their inform! ation fro! m? Are they connected to the Source of All That Is, which you are trying to connect to?

There are many guided meditations available on CD and mp3 to listen to, follow and evolve.

An Active Mind is a Healthy Mind

Mindfulness
by drp

Article by John Trevey

Many recent research studies have focused on the rate of cognitive decline present in a people who regularly participate in mentally healthy activities versus those whose minds receive little stimulation. Mental exercise, achieved by regularly challenging the brain, has been linked in numerous reports to a delay in the onset or a possible reduced risk of Alzheimer's disease and other causes of dementia. People who maintain a high level of mental activity are believed to have a decreased risk of developing dementia, leading many experts to believe that maintaining mental sharpness may delay, or possibly prevent the development of Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. Exercising your mind involves regularly introducing new activities and concepts outside of your normal routine to challenge the brain. Some examples of activities that can help strengthen the mind are:

-Read and write. Reading for comprehension of material to which you have never been exposed challenges the mind to learn and interpret new concepts. Select reading material that is difficult to understand or conceptualize. Writing forces the mind to put abstract ideas into a logical context, which can be mentally beneficial whether you are composing an e-mail, a short story or an autobiography.

-Play games. Playing games challenges the mind to strategize, persist and focus on a goal for a period of time, all healthy ways to keep the mind sharp. Participating in games with others can be both mentally challenging and contribute to healthy social interactions, another factor shown to promote a healthy mind.

-Be socially involved. Being involved with a network of friends and loved ones keeps your mind stimulated. Playing games, discussing intriguing topics and participating in other engaging activities in a social context can help keep your mind active and sharp.

-Solve puzzles. Puzzles challenge you to focus, think analytically and work toward a goal, all of which contribute to healthy mental function. ! Crosswor d and Sudoku puzzles are fun challenges that provide the opportunity to strengthen your mind during a commute or while waiting at the doctor's office.

-Learn something new. More important than what activity you are doing is whether you are exposing your mind to a variety of new ideas. You may wish to try a new hobby, or challenge yourself to excel further in a current one. Learn a dance, try golf, create a birthday card for someone, learn to play a musical instrument, the new experiences that can boost your mental strength are endless.

Though it remains unclear whether the development of Alzheimer's can be prevented or delayed in all cases, regularly engaging in stimulating mental activity is just one of the factors that has been linked to a decreased incidence of Alzheimer's disease.

Doctor Jekyll and Mister Amygdala

Posted: 15 Aug 2012 06:00 AM PDT

A friend just wrote to me with a troubling story. He's had a few upheavals in his life recently, including a divorce, but then he made a dreadful ethical slip and got involved with a former patient of his. Of course that's a huge ethical no-no in the caring professions, and it may have life-long consequences for his career.

But in responding to my friend's letter I was reminded of Robert Louis Stevenson's story, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Most of you know this story from cheesy horror movies, but the book is actually an astute spiritual parable that sprang directly from Stevenson's subconscious in the form of a nightmare. The story stands up psychologically to the point where you can translate the characters into the terms of modern neuropsychology as represented by the work of author Wildmind contributor Rick Hanson, Ph.D.

Dramatis Personae

  • Dr. Jekyll, who is the neocortex and mammalian brain, responsible for self-monitoring, planning, advanced cognition, empathy, and compassion.
  • Mr. Hyde, who is the "reptilian" part of the brain, concerned with fight, flight, and fulfilling appetites.

The Story
Henry Jekyll is a good doctor who helps many people through his work. He has a well-developed mammalian brain in which empathy and compassion are important. He is, however, deeply troubled by his amygdala-driven unexpressed bad-boy tendencies within. He is ashamed of them and afraid of them.

We all have "hindrances" — potentially destructive tendencies toward craving, hatred, and fear. Those tendencies manifest in our thoughts and our actions.

One thing all meditation teachers have to do is to let people know that it's OK to have these hindrances. When people start self-monitoring (a neocortical activity), as they do when cultivating mindfulness, they start noticing distracted, craving, hateful thoughts. And their reaction is often to get upset about these. But that's unhelpful, because that's a case of responding to a hindrance with yet another hindrance. Yes, ultimately we want to get rid of the hindrances, but you can't deal with them on their own terms, by getting angry about getting angry, or craving a lack of craving, or being afraid of being afraid, or getting despondent about noticing despondency.

These hindrances are not "bad." They are actually mental behaviors that have evolved over millions of years in order to protect us. Someone threatens you, you get angry, they run away (hopefully). A big carnivore jumps out in front of you, you get scared, you run away. You see something you want, you grab it. And so forth. But these tendencies, while they work well in wolf-packs and worked well when we lived in caves, are maladapted for life in the modern world. Being angry with your computer when it's working too slowly doesn't change the computer, and just makes you unhappy and even ill. Bingeing on food because you want it can make us ill in different ways. Negative emotions undermine our relationships with others, so there's a social cost. And even when they don't have social or health drawbacks, our hindrances make us unhappy. Our sense of well-being is sub-optimal when we're frustrated, or craving, or anxious.

The hindrances are not bad, they're just strategies for finding security and wellbeing that happen not to work very well.

Dr. Jekyll is the man who sees these potentially destructive activities going on, but who is afraid of them. He's the neocortex observing the amygdala. He identifies with his goodness, and psychologically disowns his hindrances. And he represses them. But in doing so, he's acting out — internally — a form of violence driven by fear. The neocortex has been silently hijacked by the amygdala, since this fear actually stems from primitive, reptilian parts of the brain.

So Jekyll creates a drug that will anesthetize the bad boy within. He's trying to anesthetize the amygdala, so that his neocortex no longer has to keep his "baser" instincts in check. But what he hasn't realized is that over the years of repression, the bad boy has become much stronger. The repression Jekyll has done over the years is a form of inner violence, and thus has been feeding Hyde. And when Jekyll takes the potion it's his good side (the neocortex, in modern terms) that goes offline, and the inner bad-boy (the reptile brain, the amygdala) that dominates. Mr. Edward Hyde is released. And it ain't a pretty sight.

Once Hyde — a destructive monster who delights in violence and in indulging his unseemly appetites — is released, it's impossible to keep him restrained. He becomes stronger with each outing. And indeed, when parts of the brain are exercised, the wiring in them becomes stronger. That part of the brain actually grows.

Of course the story doesn't end well, and Jekyll is destroyed, but it's a cautionary tale that we're meant to learn from. So what should be learn?

What Jekyll should have done is to strengthen the neocortex by developing more mindfulness and compassion, so that the amygdala-driven Hyde would be known, contained without being repressed, and simply fade away through atrophy.

Easy to say! Let's break that down a little.

When we stop reacting to the hindrances, and either simply accept them without acting on them, or cultivate their opposites — qualities of love, confidence, etc. — the neocortex actually grows. That part of the brain becomes thicker. The number of connections running back to the amygdala increases, so that the reassuring signals reaching it ("It's OK. There's no need to panic and get violent. I have this covered") are stronger. And the amygdala actually shrinks. The brain is a real energy-hog, and takes a lot of work to maintain. If our fight-or-flight mechanisms are not needed, then the body somehow knows that it's time to remove some of the brain circuitry necessary for those mechanisms.

So Dr. Jekyll is not conquered through fear and repression. He's conquered through mindfulness and compassion.

It's worth mentioning that this process of dealing skillfully with hindrances can be short-circuited by "spiritualizing" them. All those spiritual teachers who turn out to have been living double lives, giving inspiring teachings while sleeping with their students? Usually they've been telling themselves, and their partners, stories about how the relationships are "sacred" or an expression of non-duality. This is just another example of the amygdala hijacking the neocortex. The old way was, you want, you take. In a spiritual context you want. You make up a half-way convincing story. You take.

This reminds us that Dr. Hyde is sneaky. We need to give the neocortical Dr. Jekyll a lot of exercise, through practicing mindfulness and compassion. And we also need other people to give us feedback and to call us on our bullshit. We need sanghas. Getting enlightened is a team sport.

Mind Training? What for? - Part I

Mind Training? What for? - Part I

When I speak about mind training I can perceive the skepticism and incredulity of people with this respect. They listen to me but I see the doubt in their faces, what I see is unbelief. Then, they ask me things like: if I think with intensity of winning the lottery, will I win it?, or if I want to enlarge my garage, will it be enlarged? And, I realize that the concept of mind power is not clearly understood, there is a disinformation about this topic. On the other hand there are some people who believe in the power of mind but as they don't get fast results, they give up quickly. People expect immediate results, as if it would be some kind of magic, or like a fingers crackle.Truly, our thoughts move a very powerful energy that affect the world surrounding us and to everything contained in with a strong or smaller force. It is like throwing a stone to a pond, the near waves are bigger and they have a great effect on the surrounding water, while those same waves arrive with smaller force to the borders of the pond. But, certainly a single stone is able to affect the whole water of the pond, right? Well, a thought is like the stone, and the pond represents the universe we belong to. Now imagine that we throw identical stones to the same place of the pond one after another, the set of stones will create stronger waves that could cause the dams of the pond, in the same way one thought doesn't affect your surrounding universe with the same force of thousand thoughts. That explains why some people don't get immediate results, they just gave up early. It depends on with how much force we can affect the current state of the universe to make changes happen to our favor. And this is only achieved with directed thoughts repeated thousand times.Another misunderstanding takes place because some authors refer to this mind's capacity like The Law of Attraction, in other words, "what you think, is what you get." This asseveration is certain although we can see it other! wise. First of all we are not like metal magnets. Not literally. What it really wants to say is that the more trained your mind is, the better you will achieve your goals. There is no magic neither supernatural things on this stuff. It is simply that when we learn how to use our subconscious mind correctly, we develop abilities and capacities that were sleeping before. I will talk with bigger detail about these specific abilities in the second part of this article. The world is plenty of opportunities to achieve anything. And the proof is all the people enjoying the success and prosperity we would want to have. Those people manage their subconscious mind to their favor awaring it or not. It is a fact that we can learn how to use onto our favor that 90% of our brain called subconscious mind. Only doing it we will develop the abilities to see and to recognize all the opportunities around and it will be on our own to take advantage of them. Opportunities we couldn't see before will be revealed and it will be like to take off a soiled eyeglasseses from our eyes. What we call hunch will be developed to its maximum power. This will let us to recognize the right person who will take us to the right job, or to recognize the right chance to increase our incomes toward the dream car or the dream house. With this in mind get back to the questions people made me.With respect to winning the lottery, the answer is yes, it is possible! But this doesn't mean that thinking about it's enough. You need a winning bill. Does it mean you have to buy all the lottery bills you can? No! What will happen is that your new developed abilities will allow you to distinguish the winning bill when you see it. At that precise moment you will feel a kind of hunch and you just have to take action. With respect to garage enlarging, you need someone with the right experience and talent and knowledge to do it to your pleasure. If you pay attention sooner or later you will find the right person in an unexpected way. Or maybe you will be pointe! d to the ! right person in an unexpected place or meeting. Things work like this. Whether you are busy with your daily routines or not, your subconscious mind keeps you in alert state in order to get what you want and 'talks' to you in the form of a hunch when the opportunity is in front of you.By training your body at the gym you can become stronger.By training karate movements you can improve your personal defense. In the same way by training your conscious (10% of your brain) and your subconscious mind (90% of your brain) to work together onto your favor, you will be able to develop the capacities and abilities to get the most of life.

A modest purge

Posted: 15 Aug 2012 05:00 AM PDT

It is my opinion, but if a special test were devised for Western Buddhists by which their philosophical views would be laid bare, we would find the bulk of these Buddhists to espouse the kind of materialism the Buddha rejected that, essentially, denies a transcendent self (since it couldn't be perceived), along with karma and rebirth.

If these same Buddhists had been heavily steeped in Mahayana Buddhism which doesn't shy away from proclaiming an absolute (e.g., Buddha-nature, Atman, Tathagatagarbha, Tathata, etc.), our test might come out much differently.

It is only in later Abhidhamma literature, after a wave of schisms solidified into a number is sects after the Buddha's passing, that we find an explicit denial of self which is mainly in the Theravada sect.  There is no such categorical denial in the early canon.  What many discourses teach is that we should not identify our self with what is not the self or anattรข.  For example, consciousness is not my self (na meso attรข).  In fact, nothing conditioned should I regard as my self.  According to the Buddha, "You should abandon desire for whatever does not belong to self" (S. iii. 78).  And what does not belong to self?  The entire conditioned world including the Five Aggregates (paรฑca-khandha).

Some Western Buddhist's refusal to examine, fairly, what the Buddha actually taught and did not teach by a careful reading of the early canon, is not atypical.  Partly, the reason for this is Westerners before they come into Buddhism already lean towards materialism.  After they become Buddhists, they don't want to learn that Buddhism really cuts against materialism in a huge way.  Incidentally, their set of values is more indicative of the typical materialist during the time of the Buddha who basically denies the self, karma and rebirth.

The problem that Western Buddhism now faces is how to clear out the materialists; making it very clear that Buddhism is incompatible with materialism.  Without a modest purge, so as to set the record straight, the materialists who have somewhat taken over the reigns of Buddhism in the West will eventually become like the proverbial dog in the manger who will try to prevent others from learning about true Dharma (saddharma).

5 Tips to SUCCEEDUsing the CINEMA of the MIND

By Michael Searles

The Cinema of the Mind helped me win a ,000 holiday and it will help you get what you want too if you use it.

You own a Mind Cinema.

With your Mind Cinema you can succeed using Mental Rehearsal.

Mental rehearsal is the process of imprinting images of your goals and expectations in your mind.

You see and feel the positive outcomes and achievements that you ultimately want to attain in reality.

Most of our peak performing athletes, business people and sale people use mental rehearsals to not only improve skills they already have but also develop new skills.

You can use mental rehearsal to help yourself with near future personal performances or desired achievements such as in business, sales or sporting activities.

You may desire a promotion perhaps or an award that you would be proud to accept.

The point is mental rehearsal can help you with your achievements today, next week and twelve months from now.

I've spent over twenty years researching success strategies that work. I've read hundreds of books, listened to dozens of recorded programs and have heard some of the top key note speakers from around the globe.

The benefit of using mental rehearsal for success has been emphasized in most of the works I have studied. That is how important it is to you. It really works! But how does it work?

Start with your desireMy recent gain of winning a holiday on a television game show using mental rehearsal may be taken as a practical example of how it works.

I had watched the show on many occasions. Each contestant stood to win an overseas or interstate holiday plus a considerable sum of spending money. I started thinking 'I wish that was me winning all that!' and decided to do something about it. I had the desire.

After an initial audition I was advised I would appear on the show as a contestant within three weeks which gave me just a short time to prep! are a plan for success and start acting on that plan.

This is an important step for successful mental rehearsal. It helps you clearly define what you are going to work with.

Having my plan in writing and having definition of what I wanted to achieve I began mental rehearsal on a daily basis. Every day and many times during the day I would run a short movie of about one minute through my mind.

The mental movie would feature me as the main performer. Using the minds eye I would see myself succeeding at all the steps I had written down. I'd see myself as the winning contestant! The audience would be applauding. The host of the show was shaking my hand and congratulating me. I was a winner and had that winning feeling.

My short mental rehearsals would always conclude with me seeing myself enjoying the rewards of my success. I saw myself flying to the holiday destination; sitting pool side at the holiday resort; handing over lots of spending money (difficult even during mental rehearsal!).

I would pick the most convenient time of the day for mental rehearsal. For example, I found early morning in the shower worked well. Also while In the car at traffic lights or riding public transport. Taking a coffee break and in bed before going off to sleep for the night were all moments of time I could grab to run a quick mental movie of success.. Anytime I could grab a few minutes to press the 'play' button of my mind would suit me.

When the day arrived for me to attend the studio for taping and eventually going on to be a winning contestant it was no real surprise for me to see the real life outcomes were very similar to how I had been mentally rehearsing them.

That's how mental rehearsal works!

But why does it work?

Why mental rehearsal worksResearch has shown that imagined events vividly imprinted in the mind's eye are recorded by the brain and central nervous system as memories. That is to say they are not distinguished from actual physical experiences.

When we ! repeatedly imagine something with feeling our subconscious mind accepts these for future reference.

When in a future situation similar to that which you have mentally rehearsed your subconscious mind with its stored information will go to work for you assisting you to live out the event as near to that of your vivid mental rehearsal. I guess we can say mental rehearsal is mental performance training!

5 Keys to Succeeding with Mental Rehearsal

So here is a summary of the procedure for achieving success through mental rehearsal.

1. Know what it is you want to achieve. Make sure your desire is genuine.

2. Formulate a plan for getting what you want. Include in your plan the likely progressive steps you will need to take to fulfill your goal.

3. Put you goal and plan for attainment in writing.

4. Mentally rehearse your plan. See yourself successfully doing or whatever you desire. See yourself achieving your goal in the end. Capture the feelings of success. Practice your mental rehearsal at least once each day.

5. Clearly picture yourself in conclusion celebrating the rewards of your success.

History of Yoga

Posted: 15 Aug 2012 03:00 AM PDT

Article by Rehash Morkey

Yoga began in India 3,000 to 4,000 years ago. The word yoga comes from the Sanskrit language and means, to join or integrate, or simply union. It started, as far as we know, as part of India's philosophical system, but not everyone practiced yoga, and it has never been a religion.

About 5 million people in the United States do some. Dance and stretching exercise classes usually have parts and pieces that come directly from yoga. If you ever go to a physical therapist, he or she may give you therapeutic exercises that are yoga postures.

There are several types of it. You may have seen on TV or taught at your local Y or an adult education class is called hatha yoga, or physical yoga. Sometimes it's known as the yoga for health. You may also find yoga being taught in a hospital or medical setting. Many health professionals today feel yoga can be part of a treatment plan.

Hatha has three parts: a series of exercises or movements called asana (poses or postures in English), breathing techniques of all kinds, and relaxation.

Yoga is a union of body, mind, and spirit. The history is long and steeped in tradition. Yoga is an ancient system of health and fitness which originated in India. The word yoga has its first mention in the Rig Veda, the oldest of the sacred texts. Those that study estimate it's age to be four thousand year.

The history can be divided into four main periods which are the pre-classical period, classical period, post-classical period and modern period. The book is called the yoga sutras. The history of yoga would not have been completed in the classical stage of yoga.

The word Yoga literally meant the Yolk that joins something together, such as an ox to a cart. The idea is that yoga unites all aspects of being into one.

What most people envision to be Yoga, those contortionist postures, is really only one small aspect of a much larger field of practices. The methods of yoga includes ethical disciplines, physical postures, breathing control ! and as well as meditation.

The 20th century witnessed a renaissance of yog that caused a globalization of this ancient tradition. Modern approaches to have created a clear delineation between the Hindu religion and the practice of yoga. Through the practice of yoga, an individual can gain information about physical, emotional, mental and spiritual well being.

Ultimately, all agree on one common element the fundamental purpose of yoga is to foster harmony in the body, mind, and environment.

Today it is accepted as a comprehensive exercise to promote control of the body and mind. More than just a means of being fit and trim, yoga can help you live a healthy, whole, and empowered life. In recent decades, yoga has greatly and swiftly evolved. It is the most diversified spiritual practice in the world. The living tradition of yoga now recognizes no borders as it continues to spread globally.

Use Mind Power to get what you want - Part 1

Posted: 15 Aug 2012 01:00 AM PDT

Article by CH Seet

"You are what you think!". "If you think you've lost, you've lost!". We've all heard these phrases and similar ones before. But how true are these in real life. Well, it's as true as it can get. Our thoughts control our life! It's all about how and what you think. Some time back, I remember coming across this saying that makes a lot of sense to me : Sow a Thought, Reap an Action!Sow an Action, Reap a Habit!Sow a Habit, Reap a Character!Sow a Character, Reap a Destiny!

How true! Our thoughts lead us to take certain actions in life. Positive thoughts lead us to take positive action. Negative thoughts lead us to take negative actions or prevent us from taking positive action. If we take an action often enough, it becomes a habit. Experts say that if you continue to do the same thing for at least 21 days, it becomes ingrained in you and becomes a habit. If you practice a series of habits, it becomes a character that people associate you with and this will lead to your destiny!

So how do we use Mind Power to our advantage? Well, first we have to understand that the mind is like a garden and negative thoughts are like weeds. If we want a garden full of nice beautiful flowers, we first have to get rids of the weeds and then sow flower seeds. As the flowers grow, weeds will come again and so, weeding is a continual process. Understanding this analogy, we can see that using Mind Power is a two step process. The first step is to rid yourself off negative thoughts. This step is especially important for individuals who have a tendency to go into negative thoughts. This first step is extremely crucial for success in Mind Power. We're surrounded by negative people. Sometimes the people closest to use are the negative ones.

Once you have acquired the skills of eliminating negative thoughts on a regular basis, the second step is learn how to train your mind to think positively consistently and use mind power to improve everything you do.There are 3 key ways to eliminate negative thoughts the mo! ment the y occur.

1. Label it • • " The moment a negative thought occur, label it in your mind that this is a negative thought. Imagine yourself physically labeling it (pasting a label that says, "Negative Thought" with a big "X" on it). When you do this often enough, it becomes automatic and the next time this same thought comes again, the "Negative Thought" label will be as clear as light!

2. Exaggeration • • " This technique involves a bit of imagination. Each time a negative thought comes, you exaggerate it to the point of it becoming totally unbelievable. The best way to illustrate this is with an example. Let's say, you are planning to invite your new colleagues over for dinner. Negative thoughts may start playing on you such as, "You can't cook! Your new colleagues are all going to hate your cooking and they will all leave and the whole event will be a disaster for you and your career!" You can then start to think about how your cooking starts to overflow the pot, and into the kitchen and then into the living room. And you can't stop the flow and you're burnt by the hot fluid. Your colleagues came and were also burnt. Your neighbors had to call the ambulance to take your whole office to the hospital! Then the next day, the headline reads, "Cooking accident lands owner and colleagues in hospital!". Have a good laugh at it and throw the thought away!

3. Replace it• • " The mind is always occupied and thinking of something. What is really interesting is that despite the many thoughts on your mind, it can only think of one thing at a time. With this knowledge, one of the best ways to get rid of negative thoughts is to replace it immediately with another thought. Taking the example above, you can start by replacing the thought that you can't cook well by thoughts about how all your colleagues will be so impressed with your cooking that they insist you cook every weekend! Or just replace it with a totally different thought altogether. Ideally choose something you love such as perfe! cting yo ur golf swing!

The above techniques can be used concurrently to create a stronger impact on negative thoughts. For example, Labeling the negative thought allows you to identify it quickly. However, you can still "make fun of it" by exaggerating it and then finally replacing it with something positive to have a lasting effect.

In part two of "Use Mind power", we'll see how we can use Mind Power to improve and excel in what we do on a daily basis.

Your Mind Power; Who Is In Control Of It?

Posted: 15 Aug 2012 12:00 AM PDT

Article by Harold L Lowe

As I began preparing to write this article, I was reminded of a statement made by Earl Nightingale, a pioneer in the field of self development, that the vast majority of people have no idea of the mind power they possess from birth and it is given to us for FREE! He went on to give this analogy. Imagine one of those giant earth-moving machine at a construction site, a huge and incredible machine, with a little person perched way up on top with the wheel in his/her hands controlling it.

How striking that analogy is to the human mind, and it offers a powerful clue as to what is necessary to begin mastering your mind power. The enormous machine will carry many tons of earth wherever the operator desires that it should go, but it takes the little person at the controls to give it direction.

It was over 40 years ago when Mr. Nightingale made that statement and gave that analogy. Amazingly, little has changed in terms of the lack of knowledge and understanding of the mind power each of us possesses and how you can take control of it.

Most people give little thought to their minds and the tremendous power within them to do, to be, and to have more of what they would like to have in their lives. It seems that for the first few years of their lives they literally have no control over their minds and what they think.

Look at your own life. During those early years, the control of your mind was exercised by your environment, your parents and care-givers, for the most part. Then the educational and religious systems took their share of control in shaping what you learned to think, and perhaps even more importantly, shaping the limitations that were placed in your thinking.

Unfortunately, by the time you exited high school, your habitual patterns of thinking may as well have been set in concrete, and those habitual thinking patterns were essentially placed there by someone other than you. The consequences for you, however, were by the time you reached adulthood, most of your ! dreams w ere buried beneath hundreds or even thousands of negative, dream-sapping beliefs.

How many courses were you offered on the power of positive thinking in school? How many courses were you offered that taught you wealth-building principles in school? How many courses were you offered that taught you how your mind functions and how you can control it and direct it toward more of what you desire to be, to do and to have? Yet the very kinds of courses that were not offered to you were the very kinds of courses you must have to build a more successful, more fulfilling, and happier life.

Here is something I know for sure, however, you can claim or re-claim control of your own mind power. You are the most miraculous of all living beings on earth. You are the owner of a mind that is so stupendous, that as you truly begin mastering your mind power and consciously using it, there is no dream that you can dream that you cannot achieve.

Typical Toddler Behavior, or ADHD? 10 Ways to Tell

Posted: 14 Aug 2012 11:00 PM PDT

CREDIT: Kid playing via Shutterstock

Telling the difference between a normal, antsy 4-year-old and one who is hyperactive to the point where it affects his or her ability to learn has become trickier as attention deficit disorders have become more common, according to recent research.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most commonly diagnosed mental health disorder among kids in preschool, and it is now found in one of every 11 school-age children. But 40 percent of all 4-year-olds have trouble paying attention. So for parents, realizing which behaviors are a sign of the disorder is of paramount importance for receiving the correct diagnosis and treatment, experts say.

"ADHD has a biological basis that often makes it a lifelong condition. We want to catch ADHD early because it has such a profound effect on learning and academic development," says Dr. Mark Mahone, director of neuropsychology at the Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore.

Understanding the brain variations that occur in people with ADHD could help in properly diagnosing and treating kids, Mahone said. For example, research has shown that a brain region called the caudate nuclei is smaller in children with  ADHDthan in other children. The region is responsible for motor skills and cognitive control.

But there are visible symptoms of ADHD to watch for, too. Mahone suggested that parents consult their physician if they witness these behaviors in their 3- or 4-year-old:

1. Constant climbing — even when instructed not to do so.

2. Continuous movement, such as bouncing a knee constantly, the inability to sit without squirming, or restless feet, accompanied by frequent needs to get up and move around.

3. Running and moving so quickly that it results in serious injury, such as stitches, even after having been told to stop.

4. For 4-year-olds, an inability to hop on one foot.

5. An inability to play peacefully with others, and the occasional show of a level of aggression that requires removing the child from a situation.

6. Being louder and noisier than fellow playmates.

7. Often befriending strangers with little caution.

8. Showing unusually low fear in situations that can lead the child into danger.

9. The inability to focus for more than a few minutes without losing interest.

10. Refusal to participate in an activity that requires the child's attention for more than a minute or two.

When these symptoms are apparent, the child should be evaluated, Mahone says.

"There are safe and effective treatments that can help manage symptoms, increase coping skills and change negative behaviors to improve academic and social success," he said.

Pass it on: There is a difference between a normal toddler's antics and those of a child with ADHD.

Learning and remembering such movements through repetition becomes a form of cognitive therapy. Before starting a yoga follow, survivors should speak with their treatment providers, in addition to their intended yoga instructor. Most teachers ask about injuries in the start of sophistication, but few people understand the intricacies of TBI on their own. Justify any uncommon sensitivities or restrictions you expertise and ask the trainer for recommendations inside his or her own category, or for suggestions on where to seek out additional compatible classes. Yoga is supposed to support and nurture growth, not exhaust the body and nervous system.Because of this, survivors may initially need to stay far from Kundalini Yoga or Bikram Yoga, both of that supply intense workouts. Kundalini Yoga aims to awaken dormant energy pot! ential, that sounds like a sensible factor for TBI survivors. Indeed, it will help tremendously--once neurons have stopped misfiring and "short-circuiting." Most survivors inaccurately gage their stamina, though, easily over-stimulating themselves. Kundalini Yoga works powerfully on refined levels, making energy levels additional tough to monitor. Typically the rapidly awakened kundalini proves too much for a sensitive TBI survivor. Bikram Yoga takes place in a terribly hot area, moving rapidly through poses that encourage the sweating of toxins. As with Kundalini, adherents of Bikram rave concerning its benefits. For a hypersensitive survivor, though, the excessive heat, body odor, and physicality of Bikram make it a less safe option. In the beginning, look instead for sophistication titles like: "Restorative," "Beginner," "Iyengar," "Kripalu" and "Gentle."Yoga Journal offers many DVD's, in case survivors like to learn within the comfort of their homes. Begin with short sessions to make up mental and physical stamina. Twenty minute DVD's permit survivors a sense of accomplishment, while not the potential fatigue caused by hour or hour and a [*fr1] long in-person classes. Downward Dog Productions with Sarah Bates additionally offers accessible yoga DVD workouts designed particularly for individuals with disabilities. At-home yoga workouts take most of the expense out of learning yoga, too, since survivors can invest in one or two DVD's to practice each day, instead of paying for class each time. On the opposite hand, a good yoga teacher will personalize routines to support survivors' own unique health challenges.Besides sculpting lean, strong muscles and naturally realigning the spine, yoga offers TBI survivors a probability to reconnect with their bodies during a positive way. Robin Cohn, a TBI survivor and Vice President of the New York State Brain Injury Association, recognized the transformative effects of yoga in her own recovery: "I started with a beginner's light yoga class, where I slowly started to get ! atrophie d muscles moving once again. The more I went, the better I started to feel." Galvanized, she began co-teaching yoga categories designed especially for other survivors. "These students are thus thrilled to possess the opportunity to be practicing yoga and reaping the wonderful benefits of asana and pranayam (respiratory). ... The happiness, tranquility and peace that yoga brings to them is thus rewarding! Their smiles just say so a lot of regarding how happy they're to be practicing."Yoga brings awareness from 5000+ years of connecting human body, mind and spirit. It began as a means of calming the endocrine system and relaxing the body so that practitioners might sit longer in meditation. These calming, strengthening and relaxing effects make it a perfect observe for TBI survivors whose systems run on constant overload. Slowing down and bringing oneself to center can help anyone cater to stress. For TBI survivors, though, yoga offers a glimpse of not simply "traditional" functioning; yoga additionally brings the possibility for optimal health and well-being. Many practitioners expertise peace and self-acceptance for the first time in their lives, including pre-injury. Yoga becomes half of a bigger awakening (facilitated by TBI)-helping survivors to search out and appreciate the hidden blessings of their journey.

Blood Type May Affect Heart Disease Risk

People with type AB blood may have a higher risk of heart disease compared with those whose blood type is O, according to a new study.

Researchers reviewed two studies that tracked nearly 90,000 people for more than 20 years and found that coronary heart disease risk varied with participants' blood types. People with type O blood had the lowest incidence of coronary heart disease, and compared with them, those with type AB blood were 23 percent more likely to have heart disease, while those with type B blood were 11 percent more likely, and people with type A were 5 percent more likely.

"While people cannot change their blood type, our findings may help physicians better understand who is at risk for developing heart disease," said study author Dr. Lu Qi, assistant professor of nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston.

The researchers considered two Harvard studies, one that tracked 62,000 women over 26 years, and one that tracked 27,400 men over 24 years. In total, more than 2,500 people were diagnosed with heart disease.

The association with blood type held even after the researchers took into account variables that affect people's risk of heart disease, such as cholesterol levels, diabetes and hypertension.

The results are "totally surprising," said Dr. Richard Stein, a cardiologist and spokesperson for the American Heart Association. While other smaller studies have suggested such a correlation, this is the first large-scale study to support the connection, he noted.

Stein said that while further research is needed, blood type could be added to the list of factors that are considered when a doctor assesses a patient for risk of heart disease, particularly because blood tests to determine it are inexpensive and have no side effects.

In order to reduce heart disease risk, people should exercise, eat right and keep their weight and cholesterol in check, Stein said.

Knowing that one's blood type puts them at higher risk may increase people's motivation to "take care of themselves and stop their bad habits," Qi said.

The researchers found a correlation between blood type and heart disease risk, not a cause-and-effect link. Other research has suggested mechanisms that may explain the link, such as a link between type A blood and one type of cholesterol, and a link between type AB blood and heightened inflammation.

But these links were found in very small studies, Stein said, so explaining the correlation requires further research, he said.

In the United States, 45 percent of people have type O blood, making it the most common blood type. Only 4 percent of the U.S. population has type AB blood, while about 40 percent has type A and about 11 percent has type B.

The paper is published today (Aug. 14) in the journal Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology.

Pass it on: People's blood types might have an effect on their heart disease risk.

Beginner Yoga Class Checklist

Posted: 14 Aug 2012 08:00 PM PDT

Article by Jillian Cook

If you are new to yoga, you may not know what to expect once you walk within the doors of a beginner's yoga category for the first time. You may not even apprehend how to start in choosing a beginner's yoga class to attend. Here's a "the way to" checklist.1. Nail down your goals and find the correct style for you.Everyone involves yoga for various reasons. Sometimes these variations are slight, other times they are vast. For example, are you interested in an intense physical workout to throbbing music, or are you on more of a non secular path towards (quiet) enlightenment? Are you drawn to yoga because of its health edges, and if therefore, is it physical or emotional health you're most curious about? Are you curious about the philosophy and made traditions of yoga, or are you on the opposite extreme and would not be caught dead reciting a mantra?Whatever your personal wants and proclivities, there's a yoga for you. If several flavors of yoga are offered in your area, do your research online or in the library to search out which vogue would be the best work for you.Once you recognize what it is you are trying for, you can set some goals. Decision the teacher of the beginner yoga class you're considering and ask if your expectations are reasonable.2. Choose a drop-in or series beginner yoga categoryA drop-in yoga class permits you to pay-as-you go. There will doubtless be some turnover week to week as to that students show up for class. The teacher is possible to keep this class on the gentle facet, because students can be at such differing ability levels. This could be simply what you are looking for if you simply need a style of yoga but do not need to buy a fashionable package of classes. This may additionally be a sensible choice for you if your schedule won't allow you to attend a class every week. Bear in mind there are important drawbacks. One, as a result of the category is ongoing, you will never get to start out at "the beginning." You will be a very little lost at first whereas you learn the! culture of the class. Also, drop-in beginner yoga categories have a tendency to be repetitive.A series yoga category is different in that you purchase a collection number of categories and every class builds on what you learned in the previous week. A sensible series class is repetitive solely in that there is some review each time, but then the teacher introduces new material. You can learn much a lot of a lot of faster in an exceedingly series class, but again there are drawbacks. First, if you miss a category it may be difficult to form up the fabric that you missed. Also, you'll be asked to acquire the whole series up front.Take a look at your level of commitment, your schedule and your budget and choose whether or not a drop-in or a series category is better for your needs.3. Make sure the teacher has adequate training.Yoga is currently a significant contributor to sports injuries. This will be attributed to 2 things: students pushing themselves too hard for perfection and inadequate coaching of instructors.Don't be shy in asking your potential instructor concerning their background. There are certifications for teaching "gym yoga" that an instructor can get during a long weekend. A three day coaching is simply enough to make somebody dangerous. That is not to say that a number of the people who start with such certifications don't flip out to be wonderful instructors by dedicating themselves to apply and increasing their information over the course of months and years. There are of course folks who teach yoga with no formal certification whatsoever, and though it may be tough for these academics to get liability insurance, there's nothing illegal concerning it. Remember that yoga may be a religious tradition thousands of years previous, and the idea of giving someone a certificate for learning a few poses and respiration techniques would have been an odd plan indeed even seventy years ago. It is one thing to get up one morning and decide to teach yoga with little to no experience. It's quite anothe! r to teac! h once living for years below the tutelage of a master yogi who just doesn't believe in certificates. As a general rule, obtain out yoga lecturers with at the terribly least 200 hours of training. In the United States there's an organization referred to as the Yoga Alliance that gives a registry of teachers who attended coaching programs that meet certain standards. Someone can have the Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) designation from the Yoga Alliance and still be a crummy teacher, but sometimes RYTs are a secure bet.4. Examine additional costs of the yoga class.Sometimes there are further costs involved in taking a beginner's yoga category besides the registration fee. You will would like to buy your own yoga mat, strap, or alternative props, for instance. In some classes you'll would like to buy bound books for study or perhaps special clothing of a sure color. It is vital to know what the connected costs are up front thus that you simply and your checking account won't encounter any surprises later on.I hope this checklist will help you find a beginner's yoga category that is right for you.
