Imagine that you are in a car and driving down the road. You are going somewhere that you've been many times before so, you don't have to worry about the directions. You are driving a familiar route, seeing the same familiar sites, hearing the same familiar sounds.

Nothing unusual is happening. It is so normal, so ordinary that your mind starts to wander. You start thinking about your day. Conversations you've had, problems you've dealt with, problems that still remain.

All of a sudden, you realize that you've driven past your destination and are several blocks or even several miles beyond.

That was an example of hypnosis. Twice! First when you focused your attention on your problems and not driving or on the world around you - hypnosis. Many of us go through our days awake, but following patterns we've developed over the years. We are going through the motions, doing things at home, online, at work without much forethought.

Contrast this with the idea of an Intentional Life: everything you do is done with consciousness, fulfilling one of your core values (compassion, for example). Everything is done with a conscious intent.

It's true that many things we do have some kind of intent — I'm washing the dishes because I don't want a messy house or bugs in my kitchen; I'm driving to work because I need to make a living; I'm driving my kids to school because they need to learn. But after repeating these actions every day, the intent kind of fades into the background so that we are barely aware of them. We've figured out the intent long ago, and don't need to think about them anymore.

What if that changed?

What if you were very aware of your intention for your actions? How would that transform the action, and your life?

What if you washed the dishes, but first said you are doing this as a service to your family, to make them happy, and as a form of meditation for yourself, to practice mindfulness? Doing the dishes would suddenly take on much more importance, and would cease to be boring.

The only difference is intention.

What if driving to work was done after mentally declaring an intention to help others at work, to make people happy, to find satisfaction through work? The drive might be much happier, and you might be less likely to get irate when someone inevitably cuts you off in traffic.

This is the Intentional Life.

I practice it in bits and pieces — not all the time, but increasingly. When I do it, my life is different. More purposeful, more consciously lived, more content with any action.

A simple practice of intentionality: before you do the next action online or at work, pause a moment, close your eyes, and mentally say your intention. Why are you doing this? Is it out of compassion for others, or yourself? Is it to make someone happier? To improve the world? Out of gratitude for the work and kindness of others?

And then, as you do the action, be mindful of your intention.

This is a small step, but in those few moments, you will be living an Intentional Life.

For many years, credit cards have been easy to get and even easier to use. When the economy started to turn bad, many people started relying on them more than ever before. Consequently, the average American has racked up enormous credit card debt.

Either becoming worried or starting to miss payments, many are seeking ways of credit debt reduction. Feeling that the economy is still uncertain, they hope to reduce the debt as well as the stress that such a financial situation can create. For those who can check the debt before it becomes overwhelming, some credit counseling can often start to set everything right again. But, for those who have amassed a lot, credit debt reduction efforts may need to be a more serious effort.

Debt settlement and debt management are two methods of credit debt reduction. In each case, and they do work in a similar manner, the consumer works with a debt relief company. Expert negotiators take over with creditors, and eventually manage to get the debt principles reduced. In many cases, this can be as much as 50% of the original amount. While this negotiation is taking place, the consumer is paying into a monthly account, which will eventually work toward resolving their debts.

They have also been given an incentive to adjust these figures. As a part of the government stimulus package that was handed out to corporations, there is tax money helping to cover the difference between the original debt and the newly agreed upon one. The creditors are hardly doing it out of the goodness of their hearts. It's all about recovering a portion of the debt.

Credit ratings will almost always take a hit during these processes, but most consumer's reports aren't great when they find one of these programs necessary. Besides, with the quick p! ay out t ime - depending on amount - good credit can start being rebuilt sooner.

For people striving towards credit debt reduction, these are two plans that can work. It does take certain qualifications, and there's no better place to start research than to work out what those are. Most will find that there are many more options than worry.

Living in a false light

T.S. Eliot once observed that, "Humankind cannot bear very much reality."  This is especially true of spiritual reality.  Rather than setting out to see our own true nature which is present within us but hidden, it is much easier for us to create an external world of fictions, a creator God being the biggest of all human fictions. 

Each newly created fiction is opaque until there are so many there is only darkness.  This darkness, however, is a different kind of darkness than the prosaic mind knows.  It is a false light.  It illuminates the world of man's fictions and makes them seem all too real.  It cannot be seen by those who have been baptised in these fictions; held fast to them. 

As long as the light-bringer (Buddha) has not arisen (Udana, VI, x)  one is content to live unknowingly as a prisoner in their fictional world, illuminated by false light.  However, this light, which is really darkness, has no effect upon spiritual light. Its only power is to induce a kind of blindness. 

In this blindness, humankind worships death. It believes death is liberation—it is the gateway to heaven or it is believed to be absolute finality.  But this death is another fiction of mankind.  There is only regeneration.  Each of us continues in the same direction as before, followig the false light.  

Still, the spiritual light is potentially present which is to say that it is within our grasp to actualize it.  But most do not elect to do so and awaken.  They don't wish to see the light-bringer arise whose light is too powerful and strange for them to bear; which puts an end to the false light.

Five tips for National Relaxation Day

In our fast-paced world it seems everyone's stressed, hassled, and exhausted, so it's a good thing that August 15, 2012 has been declared National Relaxation Day.

When they think about relaxing, most people would tend to hit upon rather conventional things, like soaking in the bath, having a glass of wine at the end of the evening, or watching a movie. But those things are temporary fixes that don't lead to long-term change. Instead, I'd like to suggest five habits that can be cultivated and practiced every day. These are skills that can become a permanent part of the way you function in your daily life, and bring you long term benefits. And you can do them whether or not you have time for a long relaxing soak in the tub.

1. Take your time eating
We all have to eat, and we don't generally do it very mindfully. We watch TV while we eat, or we read, or we're caught up in a conversation, or we just space out. Sometimes, heaven help us, we even eat while we drive.

It's very enriching, and deeply relaxing, to eat mindfully. It might not be feasible to eat every mouthful of food with complete attention, but what if we were to eat the first and last mouthful of a meal or snack mindfully? Whether you're eating a gourmet meal or a candy bar, really notice the movements of your body as you transfer the food toward your mouth. Notice yourself receiving the food — how it feels, tastes. Eat slowly. Chew methodically. Savor the experience. If you find you've plowed into your food and are mindlessly scarfing it down, pause, and take the next bite with full awareness.

2. Give yourself short breathing breaks during the day
You may have heard of the three-minute breathing space, in which you spend a minute just tuning in to an awareness of your experience, a minute focusing on the sensations of the breathing in order to gather your attention, and a minute expanding your awareness so that you're no longer noticing just the breathing, but also other sensations from the body, your mind and emotions, the sounds, light, and space around you. Even on the busiest of days it's a good idea to take a few of these three minute breaks.

If that seems impossible, then just pause what you're doing, take a few mindful breaths, and then bring your attention back to the task at hand.

3. Notice what your thinking is doing to you
A Harvard study of 250,000 people found that they spent almost 50% of their waking time thinking about something other than they were doing. What's more, they found that the people who were most distracted were more likely to report feelings of unhappiness. Much of our thinking promotes unhappiness.

So develop the skill of checking in from time to time to see what your thoughts are doing to you. Notice whether you're relaxed or tense, whether your overall experience is pleasant or unpleasant, whether you're happy or distressed. Notice this without making any judgements about yourself. It doesn't mean you're "bad" or a "failure" for harboring thoughts that make you feel bad. But see if you can just notice those thoughts, and let them pass away. Actually, just to notice how you're feeling you have to let go of some of the compulsion around these inner dramas.

4. Reduce input channels
One thing that really stresses us is being interrupted. So give yourself a chance to focus. If you're writing a report, shut off your email program, turn your phone off (don't just switch it to vibrate). Close any programs you don't need to have open. It's just you, and the task. You'll find that when your concentration isn't interrupted, you're not only more relaxed and happy, but you get more done.

5. Give yourself a break from the news
We get really hooked on the news, and we stress about it. That politician and his lies! Those criminals! That tragic accident two cities away! It seems like it's vital to keep in touch with what's happening. What if a war were to break out and nobody told you? Well, I remember times I went abroad on vacation and didn't have access to English-language news media. And you know what? When I got back, I felt like I hadn't missed anything. Most of the news is the same old yadda-yadda, and the TV companies are trying to built it up so that you'll get mad, be scared, and pay attention (and by the way, here's an ad for a new wonder-drug).

Try unplugging from the news entirely for just a day. Or maybe for a week, go on a news fast and do nothing more than glance at the headlines in the newspapers. The world will go on, and you'll be happier.

I'm not suggesting that you abstain from news for life, but at least for a while give yourself a break so that reading or watching the news is a choice and not a compulsion. And you'll realize how much your own habits stop you from being relaxed.

Do you have a tendency to procrastinate taking action to reach your dreams, just because you don't feel ready? Do you know what happens to a plant that stops growing? It dies! Yes, the same happens for us, human beings. Our spirit suffocates and shrivels. It will come up will all the reasons why "you can't" achieve something. Everyone's mind functions that way. The problem is that most people let their negative mind run their lives and decide for them. The winners, however, know that they must never believe everything their mind says. They know that they must master their mind in order to succeed. Your job, if you want to succeed, is to say "no" when your mind comes up with reasons why you can't -- just keep saying "no" until your mind starts coming up with ways that "you can" achieve what you want.

Pay attention to your life as if you had to testify about it

It's strange how some things stick with me, and so many don't. I've forgotten so much about what happened to me during my childhood, while remembering surprising details.

LIke my mother, an avid reader, telling me about what a noted novelist of the times (can't remember his name) said he did when he heard something unexpected late at night.

He'd glance at his watch to see what time it was. He'd listen for other sounds. He'd focus on anything else that seemed out of the ordinary. The novelist wanted to be prepared in case what he heard was connected with a serious crime, like a murder.

He was making sure that his testimony at the trial would be as accurate as possible.

I've thought about this many times over the years, especially after I started meditating every day after I took up yoga my senior year in college (1969-70; wow, a long time ago). What to focus on in my life, which naturally includes the part of my life when I meditate, has been a fascinating question.

For many years, well over thirty, I believed in repeating a mantra. It concentrated my mind during meditation. It kept me from engaging in a lot of unnecessary "monkey mind" thoughts during the rest of my day. 

And I always had something to do when I was otherwise unoccupied. Repeat that mantra.

Which changed from time to time; my first yoga teacher taught a different mantra than the second guru I followed. Later I shortened that mantra on my own, when I became more independent of spiritual dogmatism.

But now I'm much more into mindfulness. Paying attention to what is going on right here, right now.

Mantra meditation focuses attention. Mindfulness also can be concentrative, if someone centers awareness on his/her breath, for example. Yet by and large mindfulness is about being expansively aware, just as the novelist was.

In a murder trial, details are important. I learned this from my almost-obsessive following of the O.J. Simpson trial. The position of a piece of evidence. A speck of blood in a certain location. The exact timing of when a witness saw or heard something.

I'm not saying we should live our lives with the attitude that whatever we're experiencing, we should pay attention to it as closely as we would if we knew we'd have to testify at a murder trial. However, it sure seems like I should know whether I turned the burner off on a stove before I drove into town, or if I locked the front door before heading off to bed.

Increasingly, my attitude is that everything is important to pay attention to.

In my religious days I was focused on BIg Important Stuff. Meditation. Teachings of the guru. Meaning of life. State of my karma-ridden soul. Nature of ultimate reality. Now, cutting an onion to put in the pan where I'm cooking a veggie burger seems as important as anything else. 

How do I know what's important, anyway?

What criteria do I have for distinguishing "important" and "unimportant"? If I'm paying attention to what's happening at the moment as if this was evidence that could be used in a murder trial, how can I tell which details are significant, and which aren't?

Here's some excerpts from a book I'm enjoying, Charlotte Joko Beck's "Nothing Special: Living Zen." 

There's an old Zen story: a student said to Master Ichu, "Please write for me something of great wisdom." Master Ichu picked up his brush and wrote one word: "Attention." The student said, "Is that all?" The master wrote, "Attention. Attention."

The student became irritable. "That doesn't seem profound to me." In response, Master Ichu wrote simply, "Attention. Attention. Attention." In frustration, the student demanded, "What does this word attention mean?" Master Ichu replied, "Attention means attention."

...We don't want to bother with the "little" things, like how we hold our chopsticks or where we place our spoon. Yet these acts are the stuff of our life, moment to moment. It's not a question of importance; it's a question of paying attention, being aware. 

Why? Because every moment in life is absolute in itself. That's all there is. There is nothing other than this present moment; there is no past, there is no future, there is nothing but this. So when we don't pay attention to each little this, we miss the whole thing. 

And the contents of this can be anything. This can be straightening our sitting mats, chopping an onion, visiting someone we don't want to visit. It doesn't matter what the contents of the moment are; each moment is absolute.
