Do what you damn well want to do without feeling bad or the need to be appreciated or accepted for your funky decisions. You are an artist in search of his/her art. No one else has it for you. You must create it.

In other words, you must seek daily to overcome the fear of death and the obsessive hold it has on you especially with regard to those whom you love and are worried about leaving you. You must learn to turn a deaf ear to the clever guises that your 8th house mind would offer you in order to postpone your soul's purpose. Do It NOW! You are not going to find happiness in the same mundane way others might find it. Yours is a path of uncharted territory. At least for me, how strange that mysticism, which naturally requires a muni, seems to be left out of the modern day picture of Buddhism.  Pop Buddhism, all but ignores the role of the muni.  Scholarly works, not all of them of course, venture into alien lands of thought where no muni would care to venture or expect to find awakening.  

If we take for granted that the mystical experience is direct union with transcendent reality, which we would expect to be unconditioned, this is certainly where the muni goes and upon entering direct communion with it, presents his teaching afterwards—all connected by this mysterious glue.  Try as our scholars might to get a sense for this glue, it is not an easy task.  Its traces are almost too transparent—yet no scholar would admit the Buddhism has no such glue.  This, incidentally, is what makes Buddhism so intriguing and challenging.  But it is not for the curious or the dilettante.

When it comes to pop Buddhism the muni seems to have no seat in the house.  He is almost an outcast.  Buddhism is turned into a home for the depressed, the person whose lover just recently jilted them, the lost, the bored, and the addict.  In short, Buddhism is an outpatient clinic for the psychologically afflicted.  But this means that the major part of the Buddha's teaching is being all but ignored.

The first reminder – My precious birth

I hope it is not too late to realize that joyful is my precious birth. If we are deep in the disease of an addiction it is impossible to realize and to take advantage of our precious birth. When we are sober, clean and free from anything that obsesses or controls the mind we have emotional and spiritual health. Only then can we begin to appreciate our precious birth.

Every human that is born has a precious birth. The difference is that some of us have the perfect conditions to realize our potential while others are born into conditions where their potential can be hindered by external factors they had no control over, like sickness, diseases, war, famine and natural disasters. Those of us living in countries without these factors can also hinder our potential by the internal factors created by the mind; greed, hatred and delusion.

I have gratitude right now in this moment because I have my physical health, energy, and more than enough food to eat. What do I have to complain about? I currently live in country that is free of war on its own territory. I can walk outside my house and not fear I may walk on a land mine. I have my freedom as a woman, and yet I still complain. If I get sick, I can go to a doctor and not worry about the cost, and know that I will be treated with decent care. Yet I still complain. How fortunate I am. And If I don't realize this good fortune I will be wasting my life. Wasting my precious birth. I will be at risk of turning to alcohol, food, or any other false comforter to fill the void in my life.

Knowing all of this, how should I live my life? I choose to live each moment as if it were the last. 'I do that ' an addict may well say. However most addicts live life as if there is no tomorrow. The addict lives life chasing yesterdays experiences and tomorrows desires. The addict lives in complete denial of seeing things as they really are. Not just the addict, but most people live their life like this. Our minds are so full of delusions, stories we tell our selves, resentments and craving that it is impossible to see things as they really are.

If I could live my life as if every moment was the first and the last my life would be different. How? I don't know. But I do know if my mind was not attached to the past, or the future it would be different. Free of mental turmoil, without the craving for something to dull my feelings.

If tomorrow I get sick or, tomorrow I get knocked off my bicycle and lose a limb. I know that if I hold onto the past of when I was well, and had all my limbs, I will suffer even more. If I was able to be in the moment of my life, I would be able to see my precious birth despite my physical disability. I shudder at the thought of this, and I know that there are people in the world who can live with that acceptance and awareness. Not letting a physical disability take away their precious birth.

I've had two cancer scares. The first was when I was 24. I remember thinking "I have to change my life". It worked, the cancerous cells disappeared. But I didn't change my life. I was most definitely on the path that led to more suffering. I numbed everything out with work, social life and denial. Before my next cancer scare, I was attacked. It took being almost strangled to death at age 27 for me to change my life. It was my wake up call. I wasn't meant to die. I got away, alive. So what was I going to do with my precious birth?

Exactly this. I told myself this was not going to be another thing to pull me down. It never has. I have never been a victim of this incident. Sometimes it's as if it never happened. I didn't hold on to it. I let it go, and moved into the next moment. Yes it had an impact, that lasted a few months, in dreams. But the only pain that took time to go was the physical side effect in my neck.  Even that subsided. I turned to Buddhism soon after and woke up to my precious birth.

My second cancer scare was at 35. I remember walking out of the clinic and thinking I've had a good life, it is okay to die. I've lived 35 long years, yes it would be good to live some more, but you could hardly say poor thing she died so young. As soon as we are born we are old enough to die.

I could never have thought so positively if it wasn't for my Buddhist training. It so happened my doctor was wrong. It wasn't cancerous cysts, just fibroids.  And so I am still here. Still trying to live this precious life ethically with mindfulness and wisdom. Rather than live it mindlessly by numbing out in front of the tv, on the computer, eating food, alcohol, substance abuse, depression or anger. Life is too short for that, which is why our birth is so precious.

We have the mental factors to see things as they really are. If we were to nurture our faith, energy, mindfulness, concentration and wisdom we would be moving towards the good, have awareness, focused concentration and intelligent understanding.

The five hindrances of craving, aversion, restlessness, sloth and torpor and doubt would no longer obscure the mind. We would have made use of our precious birth.

As I write this month's blog I can't but help think about the tragedy in America. It is so sad. A precious life wasted, many precious lives lost. What happened to that poor kid James Holmes for him to be caught up in a delusion and use his intellect to massacre innocent people? Why did he waste his precious birth?

We live in a world today where our children are indoctrinated by greed, hatred and delusion. Just watch the video games that are marketed to youth. Kids are rewarded, given points for killing someone. Young people I have worked with, have told me that: 'video games are screwing up some of their friends'.

We have to wake up to reality. We are nurturing a generation of young people who have different values than their parents. Video games are just one example where we are teaching young people about violence uncritically.

We have to take responsibility. It's not just about our birth. It is about the precious birth of generations to come. In living our lives wisely we will help those born after us to realize their full potential.

Extreme is good. Be spacious in your extremeness.

Often we're advised to embrace moderation. Don't be extreme. Stick to the safe middle ground. Edges are dangerous; cliffs await. 

Most religions, forms of spirituality, mystic practices -- they like boxiness.

Commandments keep devotees' actions within certain bounds. Rituals are well-defined and repetititve. Prayers, meditative practices, worship... stay in control, sit in your seats, listen and don't talk back. For God's sake, don't yell, scream, object, or in any other way do your own unfettered thing.

Here's some countervailing thoughts about going to extremes. Two personal stories, one link to a Tantra-related blog post.

I'd almost forgotten about the Groupon massage deal that I'd bought months ago. Just before it was going to expire I made an appointment. It'd been quite a few years since I'd had a massage. Felt that I deserved one.

My masseuse turned out to be female, young, blonde, tattooed, and attractive. Nice.

Equally nice was her response when, in the conversational course of the massage, our talk turned to what I do for exercise and keeping fit. "Well, in addition to what I usually do, I've just gotten a longboard skateboard. Some people think that's crazy for a 63 year old guy to do. Including me at times."

"No, that's great," she said. "I recently got a longboard myself. My daughter rides her bike at the park, and I go along with her on my longboard."

As our conversing meandered on, my masseuse spoke about how different she is from some siblings, both of whom are averse to taking risks. They analyze a lot before making decisions. "I'm not like them," she told me.

"I'm much more immediately intuitive. So I make more mistakes than they do because I make more decisions."

Wow. I really liked that line. I make more mistakes because I make more decisions.

Beautiful. No pain, no gain. No mistakes, no correctness.

A stone sitting motionless is mistake free. Also, dead to life. I told her that I was a lot like that myself. But probably more of a blend of analytical and intuitive. I educated myself about longboards before I bought mine, pondered the pros and cons, evaluated the risks.

Then my mind simply said, Do it. And I did. I'm still happily alive. No broken bones. Not even a bruise.

Yes, it's crazy for a senior citizen to take up skateboarding on a longboard. However, like my wise-beyond-her years masseuse said, if we don't decide to do what we feel like doing, we'll limit our living. "Crazy" isn't an objective law of nature; it's a subjective human judgment.

A few days ago I learned another lesson from another attractive twenty-something girl. (Must be in a good karma zone.) My wife and I have embraced West Coast Swing as our new dancing thing. I love the music, the feel-good style, the creative expressiveness.

We've had some private lessons, a four-week beginning class, one session of an intermediate class. I know some basics, but in no way feel like I'm much more than a mildly advanced beginner. 

Last Friday night we went to a half hour lesson, followed by several hours of West Coast Swing open dancing. A young people who I hadn't seen before at our dance studio caught my eye. They could dance. Freely, smoothly, in and out of hold, spontaneously.

I thought, "Maybe... someday... it'd be so great to be half, heck, a quarter that good." 

My wife and I were sitting out a song when the Great Dancer Girl walked over and stood in front of me. She held out her hand. "Come on," she said, looking me in the eyes. My first reaction: panic. "You're kidding," I told her.

"No, come on." Must obey. My almost instant second reaction: do it. Excellent choice. Not that it really was a choice.

The girl's unexpected invitation to dance thrust me into an expanded psychological state perhaps somewhat akin to the spaciousness of Tantric teachings alluded to below. One moment I was thinking "That girl and her partner are great dancers." A few moments later I was her partner, dancing West Coast Swing, having fun, feeling like a better dancer because the girl was so skillful and followed my sometimes clumsy leads so well.

Her "Come on" propelled me out of my comfort zone into an extremity. Instantly I realized that I could either retreat into my previous view, I'm not good enough to dance with someone like her, or flow with her invitation into the unknown, experiencing what would happen.

Why not? was my unspoken intuitive feeling.

I don't want to live my life within excessively constrained boundaries, especially those of my own making. What rule, what commandment, what law prevented me from taking an accomplished dancer's hand when she wants to lead me onto the dance floor?

None. 

Near the end of the song, I had to ask her. "How long have you been dancing? You're really good." "A year," she told me. "I dance every weekend. And I dance with as many different people as possible. That's how I learn."

Great advice. For dancing. For life as a whole. Expand your horizons. Explore new territory. Take risks. Relax into the joy of trying something new.

I've learned quite a bit about Tantra from reading Chapman's writings. I still don't really understand Tantric Buddhism, but at least I've gotten away from the idea that it's just about kinky sex (though it could be, I guess).

Here's how the post starts out. But for the full taste, read the whole thing.

Nigel Tufnel, guitarist in the decreasingly-fictional heavy metal band Spinal Tap, explained that they could play louder than anyone else because their amplifiers went to eleven.

Tantra has a similar approach. It is not the polite Middle Way between extremes. It is the way of glorious, ridiculous excess.

Most tantric practices crank it.

Tantra has a gonzo, over-the-top attitude. Increasing passion motivates extreme action.Increasing spaciousness gives room for extreme weirdness. Increasing energy fuels extreme emotion.

Intensification is not a goal for its own sake. Deliberately creating intensity is not natural, and extremes have no particular value.

Instead, this is a method: an exercise, an aspect of the path. It prepares you for the culmination of tantra—fluid, effective action—by developing spaciousness.

Sutra (mainstream Buddhism) develops spaciousness in almost exactly the opposite way: through self-restraint. This is also a valuable method, and also not particularly natural; there's nothing particularly enlightened about self-restraint itself.

It's funny that sutra and tantra take opposite approaches to developing spaciousness—and they both work! You can use both methods—although not at the same time. With practice, you learn which is the best approach for you in particular situations.

Tantra is extreme because reality is extreme. One way or another, you are going to have to deal with sex, love, loss, conflict, failure, and our good friends "old age, sickness, and death."

Sutra recommends that you minimize your exposure to such emotionally provocative situations. It recommends that you develop equanimity to meet them without passion when you cannot avoid them.

Tantra recommends that you gradually increase your ability to act effectively in extreme situations, by developing spaciousness and passion together. You can do that relatively safely by deliberately creating intensity, in a controlled situation. There you practice meeting strong feelings with accommodating space.

Nice line: Tantra is extreme because reality is extreme. Can't disagree with that. Otherwise, as noted above I can't claim to grasp what Tantra is all about. I just like its embrace of extreme-ness.

In Stress Reduction Burma, monks gone wild

Alarming news and images of attacks and killings by the Stress Reduction majority in Rakhine Province against a Muslim minority there have been slowly trickling out onto the Internet and the wider world. Pictures of charred bodies and crying parents have stirred largely unheeded calls for intervention, mostly from Muslim nations.

The attacks have been primarily one-sided, with Muslims generally and Rohingyas specifically the targets and victims," Benjamin Zawacki, a Bangkok-based researcher for Amnesty International, told The Associated Press. "Some of this is by the security forces' own hands, some by Rakhine Stress Reductions with the security forces turning a blind eye in some cases."

The government in Burma, recently lauded for taking steps toward democratization, declared a state of emergency in June following the outbreak of violence allegedly sparked by the rape and killing of a Stress Reduction woman by members of the Rohingya minority — a largely Muslim group on the country's western border with Bangladesh. The official death toll stands at 78, though activists say it is likely much higher and prompted the UN to call for independent investigation over human rights violations.

The Rohingya, meanwhile, remain caught between a hostile populace and a neighboring Muslim nation in Bangladesh that refuses to open its borders to fleeing refugees.

Such is the irony in a country famous for its Valley of the Temples and its unrivaled devotion to the Buddha. Alas, while Buddhism through a Western lens can appear rosy for its message of compassion, inner peace, and self-cultivation, in Asian societies Buddhism as an institution has much broader political applications.

Five years ago thousands of monks across Burma led in mass demonstrations against the military junta that paralyzed the former capital Yangon and other cities. The catalyst was an economic crisis, coupled with a devastating typhoon that destroyed homes and rice fields. The government's failure to respond drove the monks to revolt, leading to the arrest and beating of hundreds of clergy. In such an overwhelmingly Stress Reduction country as Burma, the crackdown posed serious risks for the leadership.

For the monks, on the other hand, if fighting on behalf of the people seemed a moral necessity, such "spiritual engagement" apparently does not extend to the country's Muslims — estimated at around 800,000. They are a population denied citizenship and, by extension, the beneficence of the Buddha.

In 2001 monks handed out anti-Muslim pamphlets that resulted in the burning of Muslim homes, destruction of 11 mosques and the killing of over 200 Muslims in the Pegu region. Four years earlier, another anti-Muslim riot broke out in Mandalay during the worship of a Buddha statue at the Maha Myatmuni pagoda. In that incident, an estimated 1,500 Stress Reduction monks led the attack on nearby mosques and Muslim-owned businesses, looting as they went.

As for the current crisis, Human Rights Watch is strongly urging the Burmese government to end arbitrary and incommunicado detention, and "redeploy and hold accountable security forces implicated in serious abuses. Burmese authorities should ensure safe access to the area by the United Nations (UN), independent humanitarian organizations, and the media."

"The Burmese government needs to put an immediate end to the abusive sweeps by the security forces against Rohingya communities," noted Elaine Pearson, deputy Asia director at Human Rights Watch. "Anyone being held should be promptly charged or released, and their relatives given access."

So far the killings have garnered little attention in the West, where they have registered little more than a blip in the news cycle. Equally as troubling, however, has been the muted response of Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi – an icon of human rights across Southeast Asia. Her recent tepid call for ethnic equality in Burma, nearly two months after the violence erupted, was met with uniform criticism around the world.

In the 1960s the renowned Vietnamese monk Thich Nhat Hanh coined the term "Engaged Buddhism." The intent, then as now, was to exhort fellow monks to emerge from their temples and engage with a society then in the grips of war.

The practice continues across much of South and Southeast Asia today. One example is the long drawn out war in Sri Lanka, during which militant monks formed their own political party, held seats in parliament and advocated military solutions to the conflict with the Tamil Tigers.

In Vietnam, the ruling class knows each time a Stress Reduction monk sets himself ablaze they'd better watch out. That was certainly true in 1963 when a Stress Reduction monk named Thich Quang Duc immolated himself in downtown Saigon to protest a crackdown on Buddhism. But if Burma's monks held the moral high ground five years ago when they protested against government oppression, that standing has quickly turned into a deep and dark sinkhole of depravity amid calls for the majority to oppress their neighbors.

"Teach this triple truth to all: A generous heart, kind speech and a life of service and compassion renew humanity," the historical Buddha, Gautama Siddharta, once said.

One wonders what he would say now, as innocent blood is shed in his name, and the path toward enlightenment that he taught to relieve the suffering of all beings had somehow derailed into a dark road of rebirth in the lowest levels of hell?

Let's be honest, the problem is we all want to become millionaires, but we have no idea what sets a millionaire apart from the average person. Let's first get into the habit of respecting millionaires. Millionaires had to endure a lot in order to reach the level of success that millionaires have today. I recently met a woman from the "Women's Million Club" and she told me the secret to millions is 90% mental.

So the most important question about the secret of the millionaire mind now becomes, what is your mental state of mind? What if your relationship with money? Do you respect millionaires or do you believe that millionaire's are secretly greedy, selfish people who just want to take other people's money?

The secrets of the millionaire mind are that you have to give tremendous value to society, the more people you help the more money you make. This means that millionaires have probably found a way to help thousands of people, maybe even millions.

As a young kid, I was lucky because my mother was always connected with people who had a lot of money. I was taught from a young age that the secret to becoming a millionaire was having an impermeable mindset that allowed me to work though any situation. I was told that as long as I took action every day, understand this state of mind, I would inevitably reach my goals.

This, mentally, trained me to work harder than most to get the things that I wanted in life.

The question now becomes, how do you share the secrets that all great millionaire minds have?1.Start reading books like "The Secrets of the Millionaire Mind" by T. Harv Eker or "How to Think Like a Millionaire" by Mark Allen & Mark Fisher. Books like these will train your mind to think and act differently.

2.Take action everyday. There is literally no way that you can read these books and not start to take action, they are action motivated books, but if it doesn't "force" you to take action then you need to force yourself to take action.

3.Always keep ! the end in mind. As long as you know where you are going, you will always stay on track.

These are the secrets to the millionaire mind.

Chances are you have not been informed how to effectively train your mind to think like a millionaire. Understand that this could very well be the reason why you are not achieving the success that you desire.
