Irratable bowel syndrome is a gastro intestinal condition that affects 10 to 20% of the entire population in the US. Specialists have not found a precise triggering factor for this medical condition, but they all have agreed on the symptoms: diarrhea, constipation (they can be present either separately or even together), abdominal pain and a bloating sensation throughout the day.

Recent medical studies have however linked the irratable bowel syndrome to stress. In short, the nervous system controls the movement of the muscles surrounding the intestines. If the central nervous system is sending abnormal signals, the muscular contractions can be either faster or slower than the normal rate. This causes either diarrhea or constipation.

That is why many scientists recommend alternative treatments for ameliorating the irratable bowel syndrome symptoms: stress management, behavioral therapy and hypnosis. A series of medical researches in this direction have been conducted recently and they showed that hypnosis can be a very efficient treatment for the irratable bowel syndrome (75 patients suffering from IBS who have undergone hypnosis sessions for a period of three months reported a noticeable reduction in IBS symptoms, such as abdominal pain, the bloating sensation and diarrheic episodes. Patient also reported a reduction of the overall stress and anxiety levels).

But it is not always necessary to resort to hypnosis therapy as there are other efficient treatments as well. Because many people suffering from IBS also present a high level of stress, a proper stress management program can help those with this condition. It is very important to reduce the amount of stress you put on your body, especially while eating. It is recommended to eat slowly and in a relaxed manner in order for the nerves and muscles controlling the digestive system to function properly.

Avoid eating in front of the TV, at your desk at while working on the computer. If you want to be healthy, it is vital ! to take care of your body and health. Try some deep breathing exercises and muscle relaxation techniques during the day and especially before meals. Try not to think of your problems while eating, as an extra amount of stress will be put on your gastro intestinal system. It is also recommended to live a more active lifestyle. Exercise regularly to increase the amount of endorphins in your blood. This will relax you body and increase your metabolic rate.

In the same time if you suffer from the irratable bowel syndrome, it is recommended to eat smaller meals. If you eat at once a large amount of food, you put additional stress on your gastro intestinal system and in this way the muscles surrounding the intestines will have less work to do.

Do Children Suffer from Stress Related Disorders?

Posted: 28 Aug 2012 12:00 PM PDT

Article by Jay Bose

Believe it or not, they most certainly do. The young minds are like a sponge and they soak up everything they hear, see, feel and touch. As parents, guardians and rational adults, we have a responsibility to ensure that these youngsters are not affected by the stress of the modern day world as much as possible. They are our greatest imitators and will copy everything that they can from adults and from their environment.Children being subjected to unusual stress at an early age can have disastrous effects in their adolescent and adult years with ailments such as heart disease, kidney disease, hormonal imbalances apart from psychological limitations. The worst part of it all, is evidence of stress in a child's mind may not be detected until much later in life - often times that is too late.

Stress of Modern Day Society in Children Exposure to evils of our modern day social structure, such as domestic violence, domestic quarrels between parents, divorce or legal separations, war, poverty, living in polluted environments, peer pressure, racism, drug abuse, institutional violence, educational pressure, inappropriate movies and news are simply catastrophic for the young minds and can drive them into a situation where stress and anxiety reduction could soon become a challenge. The problem is magnified because children cannot express themselves as well as adults can, as a result of which it is difficult to detect early symptoms of stress and anxiety that may already be taking deep roots in their minds and still remain undetected until much later in life. This is why it is best to address this situation by simply ensuring that children are not exposed to stressful situations at least until they become mature enough to comprehend what they see and listen to. In this article, let's consider one of the common causes of stress in children

Exposure to Content Intended Only For Mature AudiencesMovies produced and released in the United States and Europe are rated for a specific purpose - to pr! ovide th e adult or the caregiver guidance on what's appropriate for children and what are not. It is imperative for adults to understand the purpose of such ratings and expose children under their care accordingly. When left unattended, children will let their imagination soar to heights where they've never been before. This causes confusion and confusion causes stress when they try to convert that imagination into reality and realize that they can't. The content filtering also applies to news media as well. While some television news channels will issue a warning before discretionary content is aired, they are not obligated to do so. When you switch to a news channel today, what percent of the news do you think is healthy for a child's mind? There won't be much to talk about. The same applies to printed media. So if children are exposed to content that is inappropriate for their age - it just adds to their confusion. Stress and anxiety reduction in children is possible by simply removing the cause of stress before it has the opportunity to grow any roots.A child's most favorite question is "Why?". Those who are or have been around growing children know this for a fact. Do you know why that is the most popular question in children? It's because children are voracious learners and seldom take anything for granted. It is an inherent technique to learn about their world and try to make sense of everything that their five senses can detect. They are trying their best to understand the world that they live in and comprehend everything that is happening around them. This is why you will find that regardless of your answer to the "Why", there is another "Why" coming up almost immediately. This stems from that urge to learn.As long as you can provide answers that are rational and reasonable in terms that the child can comprehend, you will be able to whet their appetite for knowledge. However if you cannot answer their question or if the media content they are watching or reading cannot provide that answer, their ! basic an d natural instinct to comprehend is left unfulfilled, although they feel a burning desire to understand what they have been exposed to. When things start piling up and remain unresolved, children are subjected to stress. The stress could turn into depression and anxiety, an outcome of the frustration in the child's mind to understand his or her world.So, this is an advice to parents and caregivers - be careful to what media you child gets exposed to. If you think you would be uncomfortable to cater to their inquisitiveness, or the child does not have the right maturity to comprehend the content on their own, keep them away from such information. You will be doing your child a service that they will thank you for one day when they grow up.Stress related disorders in children are not only related to improper media exposure. There are several other means by which the young minds can become victims of stress and remain undetected. I will discuss some of these in upcoming editions.

Reduce Your Debt to Zero the De-Stress Way

Posted: 28 Aug 2012 11:00 AM PDT

Article by Ruth Klein

Disposable income is currently being used to lower the high levels of debt in our overburdened economy. Stress levels are as high as the national debt, but they can be lowered by using these eight de-stress ways to bet out of this trap quickly.

1. Enlist your family. Enlist the support of your family to honestly assess your debt crisis, and pro-actively participate in a plan to reduce all unnecessary spending. Start closing charge accounts. Credit cards should not be used unless it's a true emergency. Be blunt. Show your children what's most important through questions about them; for example, what would be more important - a video game or a home to live in.

2. Be honest with creditors. Don't avoid those incoming telephone calls. Be honest. Be blunt. A client who received no help when he first talked to creditors re-called them later to say he was considering bankruptcy. That one word worked the magic to encourage his creditors to lower all his interest rates on the spot and to offer a more lenient repayment plan.

3. Plan your expenses to match your income. Erase all thoughts of impulse buys. Look at your buying options in black and white and work your numbers before you make an impulse decision. Because the economy is challenging, you have to challenge your own personal budget.

4. Consult a consumer credit counseling service. They now exist in every state, in every large city and in most or near smaller communities. Even if you decide not to attend classes, visit the Web sites of these services, since many contain free debt reduction tips you can read or download. Share what you learn with family members or roommates.

5. Create a debt repayment plan on paper. Place all that you owe in Column A and put your payments in Column B. In Column C, list discretionary monies and in Column D, make a list of your necessities like utilities and food. Don't just think about your debt. Make a plan on paper, and stick to it.

6. Revisit and revise your plan. Revisit your plan ! at least once every 30 or 60 days to make any necessary revisions. Once you get used to cutting out extras and making each dollar county, it will become a habit. The only way you'll remain out of debt is if you put this plan into effect for your lifetime.. 7. Practice patience. Getting out of debt comes with no quick fixes. Tell yourself to be patient. When you start to panic, breathe deeply, and tell yourself to be patient. Breathe deeply again, and mentally envision releasing that panic as you exhale. Do this exercise as many times as it takes to allow yourself to relax.

8. Simplify your life. Stress can rob you of the pleasure that you think will come with spending extra on vacations or personal items, especially when that spending only exacerbates your debt. Stress also leads to serious health problems, and there is no faster-rising expense than health care. Be smart. Simplify. Your reward will be a less stressful, happier life.

Being in debt is stress filled and keeps you in the debt trap. Getting out of debt through using these common sense techniques will help you keep your disposable income for happier things.

Stress and Depression Reduction Techniques

Posted: 28 Aug 2012 10:00 AM PDT

Article by Steve Hill

I have suffered with both depression and stress in my life thus far. They both seemed to go hand in hand for me personally. Fortunately I have now learned how to handle these issues and am now able to live a happy and fulfilled life.

So what did I do to reduce and eventually eradicate the stress and depression? As I entered into my twenties I decided that I needed to change the way that I was living my life, I certainly could not continue to live in the way that I had been.

The causes of my anxieties were mainly due to the fact that I had a stutter. I stressed a great deal about this speech impediment and worried about the way in which other people thought of me. Stuttering impacted on my life in a big way and made life a lot harder from what it would have been had I been fluent.

I made the mistake of becoming envious and jealous of other people, people who were able to speak fluently. I would then start to feel depressed about things and about the fact that I was one of the unfortunate people who had a stutter.

At the age of twenty-two I started to read literature about stuttering, phobias, anxiety, stress and depression. I also attempted to overcome my own stutter.

I realised that I needed to start thinking in a more positive way, I needed to worry less about what other people thought of me, I needed to work very hard to achieve my goals and I needed to start appreciating what I had in life, rather than what I did not have.

This new attitude to life was very difficult to pull off as I had been a very negative person in the past. I was however determined to succeed and after around a year I had managed to overcome the stutter as well as my issues to do with stress and depression.

Why You Can’t Eat Healthier

Posted: 28 Aug 2012 10:00 AM PDT

Post written by Leo Babauta.

Most people have a hard time moving to a healthier diet, and they don't understand what's going on.

I was one of those people: 70 lbs. heavier and addicted to junk food, I would often tell myself that I'm going to start a diet, and even buy a bunch of new food, only to find myself snacking on chips, grande lattes, cookies, French fries and more after a few days.

Why? Because I used those foods to meet many of my needs, and taking the food away meant I had no way of dealing with some difficult things.

Food is a coping mechanism for most people, and to change our eating habits, we need new ways of coping.

Some examples of how we use food to cope:

  • We eat when we're stressed. If you change to a healthier diet, how will you cope with stress instead? You need new stress coping strategies.
  • We eat when we're sad or depressed. How can we learn to cope with these emotions in a healthier way?
  • We eat as a reward, when we've done something good. What will we do to reward ourselves instead?
  • We eat to socialize. How will we socialize without food?
  • We eat because we're bored. How will we cope with boredom instead?
  • We eat because we're angry. When we get in a fight, how will we deal with our anger instead of using food?
  • We eat for pleasure. Are there healthier ways to find pleasure that we'll learn instead of using food?
  • We eat for love. We often equate food with love (our moms might have given us food lovingly as kids, or our lover used it to romance us), and so eating becomes a substitute for love. Where will we find love instead?

All of these (and more) are real needs. We all need love and pleasure and rewards, and ways of dealing with stress, boredom, sadness, loneliness, anger and frustration. For many of us, food has become the default way of meeting all those needs — and we can't just take away the food without finding a healthier replacement. If we do, we'll fall back into our old habit quickly.

It has taken me years to figure this out and to slowly build new, healthier habits to deal with all of these needs. But I can honestly say I've done it, and it's possible. Do I still think about food when I'm lonely or sad or stressed? Sure. But now I have consciously built up some replacement coping mechanisms that work better for me, and I'm much healthier, leaner and fitter as a result.

Some things that have worked for me (your mileage will vary):

  • Exercise – a great way to deal with stress, boredom, anger. After awhile, a run can also be pleasure and a reward.
  • Meditation – excellent way of learning to deal with all of our emotions.
  • Tea – also great for stress, boredom, anger, but for me a great reward and source of pleasure.
  • People – I've learned to get my love from friends and family, and to use them as ways of dealing with my tougher emotions — talking with them, working out with them, simply spending time with them.
  • Cleaning – decluttering, mindful sweeping, mindful wiping things down with a rag (TM). A great way to mindfully deal with stress, boredom, anger, etc.
  • Solitude – I've found solitude a great way to deal with tougher emotions (you learn to work out your problems instead of avoiding them by eating food), and solitude can be a reward as well.

These are just a few ideas, and what works best for you will be highly personal. The idea is to figure out what you'll do beforehand — before the need arises, or it'll be too late — and then learn to be aware of these emotional triggers as they happen. When they do happen, very consciously do the new habit instead of the old. It'll take awhile to form the new habit, especially as you'll probably forget sometimes, but just remember my mantra: "We are all learning." And have patience with yourself.

Food has become so many things to us, as individual people and as a society. It's how we socialize, celebrate holidays, watch sports, show love, find comfort, deal with pain. And yet, that's not always healthy: we are getting fatter and fatter because of this addiction, and it's time we rethink our main strategy for coping and loving.

I should note that this idea is the same for any other addiction: biting your nails, smoking, drugs, alcohol, etc. We use them as crutches to cope with our needs, and to beat them we need to find healthier methods of coping and meeting our needs.

The Sea Change Challenge

Just a heads up: tomorrow through Friday (8/29-8/31), I'll be opening up registration for the Zen Habits Sea Change Program. I'm happy to open the monthly membership program to new members for a few good reasons:

  1. We've started a monthly Sea Change Challenge, where people set a daily challenge for themselves (along with rewards) and report daily on the Sea Change forum. The accountability has been a phenomenal way to stick to something for a month. For example, my challenge was to stretch 10 minutes every morning, and I've done it for 28 straight days now.
  2. I'm creating one of the most important courses I've ever done, and it will be available only to Sea Change members. It address the root of all problems, in my experience — the reason why people eat too much, get into debt, have too much clutter, have trouble in relationships. More on this soon.
  3. We're going to have a writer's and blogger's challenge in September, along with a live webinar for writers and bloggers.

Practice when life gets tough

Posted: 28 Aug 2012 09:00 AM PDT

Sometimes life comes at us full force and overwhelms us. That's what happened to me the last few months. Things happened that were so overpowering that all my usual routines went out the window just so I could get through each day. My work, my social life – and yes, my sitting practice – pretty much dropped off my plate.

At times like this, people often say, "Life got in my way." But that's so not true. This IS my life. Just because I don't like it, doesn't mean it's standing in my way. Actually, I think it's exactly the opposite. It's showing me exactly where I need to go to push beyond my comfort zone. It's like a custom designed life lesson created just for me.

So what happened? My husband and I had been thinking about moving. He has a disability that's making it increasingly difficult to live in our three-level townhouse. So our plan was to slowly fix up the house over the next year or so in preparation for selling, while casually looking for a new place.

Sharpen your mindfulness skills with Sunada's online classes

But life rarely goes according to plan.

Our casual looking turned up the ideal place for us – all on one floor, fully wheelchair accessible, in the city, near public transportation (which we need), that we could afford. A rare find. But we couldn't buy it outright. We had to sell our place first to pay for it. Could we do it? Could we commit to buying this place and then get our current house fixed up and sold in time to pay for it? A major part of our life savings is tied up in our house, so taking big risks wasn't something we were keen to do.

To make a long story short, we decided to jump. After agonizing about it for a day, we committed to a) buying that property, and b) doing 22 years worth of fixing, cleaning, and clearing out of stuff, under a very tight deadline, to pay for it. And because my husband has that disability, it was pretty much up to yours truly to manage the whole thing.

During the worst of it, it went something like this. I'd wake up, having slept on the couch because the bed had been taken apart and cleared out for the carpet cleaners. I'd go to turn on the light in the bathroom, but the fixture had been ripped out. The microwave, which I needed to make breakfast, was on the floor in the living room. And I had to move the vacuum cleaner and boxes of stuff aside to open the door. Every plate and spoon I used had to be washed and put away immediately after use because the kitchen counter was being sanded and refinished. Workmen were around the house, banging and clanging. Meanwhile, every delay and setback — and there were several — meant that unmovable deadline loomed closer and closer.

As the weeks dragged on, I grew exhausted and irritable. I snapped at my husband. I got into arguments with our broker. I felt grouchy and miserable, but I was too stressed out to do much better. And no surprise, my meditation practice was in tatters. If I could sit at all, my mind was racing around all the things I was worrying and feeling anxious about.

But even though my daily sits were a mess, I tried to stay close to my practice — my informal practice, that is. I noted all the ways I screwed up, flew off the handle, and didn't live up to my expectations. I also saw when I handled things gracefully, resolved a dispute, and calmed myself down. It wasn't about beating myself up over my mistakes, or congratulating myself for doing well. It was simply to see myself more clearly, and learn from it.

These are some of the ways I practiced during this period.

  • Don't fight it. My mind was all over the place – both when I sat and otherwise. This was expected. There was no point in getting upset about it. Why not just observe that mile-a minute mind? Sure, I didn't like it, but that's never relevant. Why make things worse by getting all wound up about something I can't change? Some forces of nature are bigger than me, so I need to step aside and let them play themselves out. They will pass, given time. This was my practice of acceptance.
  • Do what I can. As far as my formal practice, I did what I could, which meant some days it didn't happen at all. No regrets, no beating myself up. I knew this was just a rough phase, and it too would change. I could try again the next day. This was my practice of patience and non-judgment.
  • Return to my breath. When my worries and anxieties got overwhelming, I kept coming back to my body and my breath. What's really going on here? This was my practice of staying in the present moment.
  • Be aware that I'm in a negative state of mind. When feeling stressed, I'm likely to take things personally or see things in the worst possible light. I often stopped and took a breath. What's really important here? Often I did this only well AFTER I snapped at someone. So be it. That's better than not noticing. This was my practice of keeping a bigger perspective.
  • Take ownership of my mistakes. When I said or did things to another person that I later regretted, I went back to apologize as soon as possible. This was my practice of taking responsibility for my actions.
  • Don't forget to take care of myself. With all my health issues, eating right and getting enough sleep are essential. I never cut corners on those. But I admit my yoga and exercise routine fell apart. Since I was being somewhat physically active, I allowed myself to slip on those. I felt reasonably sure I could get myself back on track once it was all over. I was doing the best I could. This was my practice of self-compassion.
  • Stay committed to my aspirations. Even at my worst, I kept connected to my longer term aspiration to be a better person, to live up to my highest ideals. I didn't always succeed, obviously. But I didn't give up on them. This was my practice of keeping my intentions.
  • Let go, and trust that things will work out. One of my weaknesses is that I'm a control freak. It's incredibly hard for me to let go of doing everything myself, my own way. But even though things don't go as I think they should, they always end up at what I need. I was constantly reminded that the universe is working the way it should – and I am held in its wise and compassionate embrace.

Practice isn't just about what we do when conditions are perfect, when we succeed at being mindful and kind. Those times when we're out of control, feeling crummy, and stressed out – they're also a great time to observe ourselves and learn how we are in the world. After all, don't we take up meditation so we could learn how to navigate life's difficulties more gracefully? Life gave me a perfect opportunity to practice exactly that.

By the way, we sold our house last week. We move to our new place in mid-September. All is well, and hopefully life will return to normal soon.

Natural Genital Herpes Treatment Method and Theory of Oxygenation and Reduction of Acid within the Body

Posted: 28 Aug 2012 08:28 AM PDT

Article by Natural Herpes Cure

Based on the work of Dr.Otto Warbugh in the early 1900's, and Dr. Theodore Baroody's novel "Alkalize or Die" we have come to understand that the reduction of acid levels and the increase of oxygen levels in the body can provide a successful and cost effective genital herpes treatment. The herpes virus is anaerobic, which means it cannot exist in an elevated oxygen environment within the body. Increasing the body's pH (alkalinity) will suppress the genital herpes and oral herpes virus to levels where one will not experience outbreaks and most, after treatment of their herpes for at least 5 months will never have to treat again (with the solutions described below)

The method proven by Dr. Otto Warbugh's research is comprised of several parts, starting with the overall theory and education of this particular herpes treatment and followed by several key natural ingredients. Below we describe two out of the three of these ingredients and how they contribute to the overall process of pH stabilization.

B.O.L is a stabilized liquid oxygen (SLO) product that is a safe supplement containing stabilized oxygen in a liquid solution of water and salt. B.O.L. has a very high pH level compared with other SLO products, which means more oxygen (which the herpes virus cannot handle). The pH varies from 12 to 13.7 dependent on that particular factory batch which is much more than competing SLO products which contain an almost neutral pH of 7 and equal amounts of acidic hydrogen/alkaline hydroxyl ions. Typical people with acidic diets will have a very low pH and will need to rise it to at least 7.45, an oxygen rich level where the herpes virus cannot exist. Decreasing acidic intake along with taking B.O.L will assist in the process of increasing the body's pH. The additional advantage to using B.O.L. compared with lower pH SLO is the excess oxygen (12-13 pH) is then used by the body to combat new incoming acids from stress, diet, and other factors.

Alkalife is another tool used along with B.O.L to he! lp reduce acid levels in the body by reducing acid intake in beverages. Part of this treatment is a change in one's diet and everyday thinking about what they put in their body. Many drinks however are acidic, and sometimes due to health, or personal taste one might want to consume these acidic liquids. This includes tea, coffee, beer, wine and most alcoholic drinks, all of which contain other health benefits which one would like to benefit from all the while maintaining a higher pH. Alkalife when added to your favorite drink like coffee or beer will reduce the acid levels to a point where your body can handle the acid and not cause build up of waste acid (which over time allows viruses like the herpes virus and others to proliferate).

When discussing acid intake from beverages the topic of "soda" cannot be ignored, diet and regular soda has a typical pH in the range from 2.5-3.5. Unlike less acidic drinks like the ones mentioned above (coffee, tea, beer) soda contains so much acid that even Alkalife and consumption of oxygen boosters like B.O.L. cannot return the body to a proper pH level. One needs to consider this fact when choosing to consume soda as it would have disastrous effects on your body not only from the sugar and calories but most importantly from the acid levels. The body's bloodstream needs to maintain a steady pH of 7.3-7.45 and soda makes that extremely difficult, this causes homeostasis where the body encapsulates the waste acid. This build up of acid is again, what causes anaerobic viruses like the herpes virus to thrive and replicate within the human body.

A note for people who exercise a good deal and routinely go through 'abnormal respiration' and create lots of lactic acid in the process. This process is counter active to this herpes treatment procedure, and for at least the first 5 months, exercising should be limited to walking, or activities that won't push a person beyond the anaerobic threshold. Once the pH is under control, limited exercise is allowed assuming t! he herpes! virus, and outbreaks remain dormant.

As more people meditate, more realize its benefits

Karen Garloch, Charlotte Observer: If the word meditation conjures images of a Stress Reduction guru sitting cross-legged in a Himalayan cave, you've got some catching up to do.

Devotees of meditation do take time each day to sit quietly, close their eyes and focus on their breathing.

But they could also be practicing while sitting in traffic, standing in grocery lines, or stuck in a contentious meeting.

"It's available to us in a lot of life circumstances," said Sharon Salzberg, an internationally known leader of meditation retreats and co-founder of the Insight Meditation Society. "You don't have to close your eyes. No one even …

Weight Reduction - What is sabotaging your diet plan

Posted: 28 Aug 2012 05:00 AM PDT

Article by Robert Taylor

Most people who desire to reduce their weight have a tendency to follow one diet plan after another. Typically they will have some level of success with whatever plan they are following for a while but then at some point they lose their way and invariably regain the same weight all over again. If you have ever found yourself asking why this keeps happening, the answer is your diet plans are sabotaged.

There are many sources for diet failures, and one of the highest among them is family. Your family and friends opinions about you, their mannerisms and their actions impact you in many ways. A negative vote of confidence from someone who you respect will quickly unravel your own confidence in your success. Just an in passing reminder of all the diets you failed, or a reference to how you must miss some type of food you gave up can plant the seed of failure in a diet plan.

Another source of dietary sabotage can be stress. Stress, or the methods you use to deal with it, can worry at you and destroy your resolve. Things that you can accomplish when your stress levels are low can be nearly impossible as you become more stressed out. Also, a lot of people use food as their crutch for dealing with stress. Because of this, if anything raises your stress level it also raises your chances of failing in your weight reduction attempts.

Another top contributor to dietary failure is a fear of success. Let me say that again…A fear of success is often the number one cause of dietary failure. The reason for this is simple. In your conscious mind, you know you want to reduce to a certain size and look a certain way…but in your unconscious mind you have reasons for why your weight stays the way it is. Often a person has weight issues due to lack of esteem or a deep internal need to protect themselves. When your subconscious mind has a firm reason for wanting to keep you at a certain size, any time you begin to notice your success at getting smaller your subconscious will cause a cri! sis or craving that throws you off balance and ultimately destroys your attempt.

Ultimately, no matter what the catalyst, your diet plans are sabotaged by a conflict between your conscious desire to reduce your weight and an unconscious need to keep it. The only way to resolve this problem is to resolve the conflict and get your inner mind and your waking mind on the same accord. There are many techniques to get your mind on one accord…meditation, prayer and self-hypnosis all allow you to reach a state where your subconscious and conscious mind can communicate. When you find the method or combination that works best for you, then you will find all of your weight reduction techniques work substantially better, and are more likely to have lasting results for years to come.

The closed mind of the beginner

Posted: 28 Aug 2012 05:00 AM PDT

To some degree, the beginner's mind is a closed, prejudiced, arrogant mind.  The beginner expects to find that Buddhism agrees with its preconceived opinions.  The beginner doesn't want to find out that Buddhism may actually go against practically all of his beliefs, or the same, the beginner's prejudices.

 Another problem with the beginner's mind is that it resists change which means it will not open itself up to the possibility that it is wrong.  One notable example is rebirth. Westerners, especially, safeguard this prejudice.  Asians, for the most part, accept the idea of rebirth.  Trying to get Western Buddhists to change their prejudice towards rebirth is next to impossible.  This applies also to beginners.  While such a stubborn attitude is a product of introjection which, specifically, comes from materialism, Western beginners are, nevertheless, reticent to acknowledge this fact and become more open minded.

 Books like Shunryu Suzuki's book, Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind, are not helpful either.  They only serve to delude the beginner even more as if there is something precious about a beginner.  The Mind of Zen, that is, the Mind attained by sages like Bodhidharma, is not the same as the mind of the novice or beginner (J. shoshin).  Far from it.

 The huge majority of beginners, with the so-called beginner's mind, are curiosity seekers.  They make up the bulk of those who join Dharma centers.  These seekers are more interested in the Asian ambiance of a Buddhist temple and the personality of the teacher than the teaching, itself, which requires of us eventually to see the Buddha Mind.

Believe it or not it is possible to have a beginner's mind and to have studied Zen for twenty years or more.  Even some Zen teachers have a beginner's mind who have never managed to have the Mind that is awakened (bodhicitta).

 We don't begin to leave beginner's mind until we look for the Buddha Mind.

 "The marvelous brightness of the Buddha-mind, by means of words, is able to enlighten people and deliver them from their illusions one by one. And when someone hears these words, and understands and affirms them, he will know for himself that the Buddha-mind's wonderful brightness surpasses even the brightness of the sun and moon. What an incalculable treasure your Buddha-mind is!" (trans. Waddell, The Unborn [2000], p. 68).

Breast Reduction Surgery Can Help You Regain Your Confidence

Posted: 28 Aug 2012 04:00 AM PDT

Article by Julia Smith

One of the most beautiful and attractive part of a woman's body is her breasts, about which most women are justifiably conscious. However, very few women are truly happy about how this very important part of their body looks. Particularly, for women who are very conscious about their noticeably over-sized or under-sized breasts, it can lead to a serious slump in self-confidence and even depression.

Let's first look at the problems associated with heavy breasts. One must not neglect disproportionate breasts and that are too heavy in proportion to the body size and overall weight. A recent survey found that approximately 5 percent of women in the US are suffering from the problem of oversized breasts.

The problem of heavy breasts usually stems from the presence of extra fat and glandular tissue in the breasts which lead to their enlargement. This can further lead to several consequent health problems including:

-Back, neck or shoulder pain due to the weight of heavy breasts.-The skin near the breast area can become thin due to stretching.-Circulation or breathing problems.-Skin irritation beneath the breast.

As a result, the person finds it difficult to do normal physical activities. It also leads to poor posture and of course, can cause a lot of emotional stress and lack of self-confidence.

Breast reduction surgeryBreast reduction surgery is proving to be an easy and safe solution to this problem. It helps in reducing the size and weight of the breasts and makes them firmer and fuller. During the surgery, the glandular tissue, fat cells and redundant skin around the breast area are removed. The cost of breast reduction surgery may range between 00 to ,000 and more.

The surgery is usually performed on women with fully developed breasts though exceptions are made at times. The surgery is always performed under general anesthesia.

The time for recovery is between four to six months depending upon your health status and other related factors. For inst! ance, if you are having your breast reduction surgery in a sunny, warm and beautiful climate such as Naples, Florida, the relaxing tropical environment can help to speed your recovery process. The presence of experienced board certified surgeons, world-class clinics and pleasant climate - in other words, all the necessary things needed for a safe and effective breast reduction surgery, can be found in Florida.

Complications of breast reduction

Breast reduction is a safe procedure when performed by a qualified doctor. However, like any other surgery, it also has some uncertainty and risk factors associated with it. Complications such as bleeding and infection and swelling around the nipple area can arise even though these are rare.

This type of surgery is more successful when a patient is mature, confident and realistic about the procedure. The training and experience of the plastic surgeon play the most crucial role in the success of the surgery.

Breast Augmentation Surgery

If your problem is under-sized breasts, then breast augmentation surgery holds the key to an effective, lasting solution. Experienced board certified cosmetic surgeons in Florida and other locations also specialize in breast augmentation surgery to help women get their small breasts looking fuller and more beautiful.

Common Reasons Why People Undergo Chin Reduction Surgery

Posted: 28 Aug 2012 03:00 AM PDT

Article by Danielle

There are reasons to reduce the chin. The size and shape of the jaw and chin contribute more than you would think to the overall symmetry of the face. Therefore, one of the common reasons for chin reduction is in connection with a rhinoplasty. Once the nose has changed in size or shape, the chin must often change as well in order to keep the face proportioned.

Another reason could be a birth defect or accident that puts the chin or jaw in a position that is not only unsightly, but also painful. Dental malocclusions, when the upper and lower jaws don't meet correctly (also called "overbite"), often require not only orthodontia, but surgery as well. This can include a chin reduction.

Some people, however, might simply prefer to have a chin reduction for cosmetic reasons. If they are displeased with the size and shape of their chin then they might consider this procedure.

What to Expect During a Chin Reduction

What is a chin reduction like? What actually happens? The surgeon first makes an incision inside the mouth or under the chin. Then he or she uses a surgical saw or file to remove or reduce bits of the chin bone in order to redefine its shape. He or she might also remove some of the fat or tissue that enlarges or misshapes the chin. For corrective surgery, he or she may shorten the jaw by cutting small squares of bone away and adjust the chin proportionately or rearrange the position of the jaw and chin bones. For incisions made inside the mouth, doctors almost always use self-dissolving sutures.

Recovery time depends on how much was done and what kind of anesthetic was used, but the patient is generally in and out in one day. Returning to regular activities and eating habits may take a few days, bruising and swelling may take a few weeks go down and the actual, natural look of the face may not be visible a couple of months.

Keep Your Chin Reductions Goals Reasonable

If this is what a chin surgery is, it might be appropriate to mention what it is not. Co! ntrary to what you may have seen on TV, no cosmetic surgery is magic. It will change your face, not your personality, or personal problems. Reputable cosmetic surgeons stress the need for realistic expectations. If your surgeon decides that you are a good candidate, a chin reduction may be the right move for you.

Are you interested in improving your appearance? A plastic surgeon or dermatologist can advise you of the types of cosmetic procedures that can fix your minor facial flaws. Whether you have a bump on the nose that can be refined with the help of a nose job, or an acne problem that can be cleared up with a professional facial treatment, a doctor can help you find the appropriate procedure.

The Causes of Cellulite and Cellulite Reduction Treatment

Posted: 28 Aug 2012 02:00 AM PDT

Article by Glenn Prialde

Cellulite is a condition that effects more than eighty percent of all women over the age of twenty, regardless of their weight or size, is usually found on the thighs, butt and stomach. Cellulite is often associated with a weight problem; however an individual need not be overweight to have cellulite. It's prevalent even in healthy and underweight women. It is an embarrassing skin condition, especially during the spring and summer months when the jeans are put away and the shorts come out of storage.

Cellulite is caused by the fat cells in the cellulite area becoming larger and clumping together in groups, pushing through the collagen connective tissue directly beneath the skin's surface, causing a dimpled 'orange peel' appearance. Women's skin visibly displays cellulite because their subcutaneous fat layer is separated by thin vertical columns in contrast to a crisscross network in men. These fat cells expand due to the body's inability to remove excess saturated fat and toxins. Poor circulation of the lymph which carries waste products and toxins from the different tissues to the blood contributes to cellulite formation. Female hormones may also play a role in contributing to this pattern of fat distribution.

The causes of cellulite include: Genetics, Hormonal, vascular, digestive disorder, systemic diseases, sedentary lifestyle, pregnancy, wrong posture, damaged veins, unhealthy diet, too fat food, smoking, stress... Cellulite also depends upon how thick your skin is and what is your age. Cellulite often forms in postnatal women and those who take birth control pills because the waste system can't get rid of the enormous flow of estrogen in the body. Cellulite can develop after a traumatic injury if the circulatory system has been disturbed.

Cellulite is one of the more difficult problems to beat to modern, figure-conscious women. It is something that women want to avoid at all costs. Cellulite reduction is the goal of anyone who has watched her young, smooth skin begin to rip! ple and lose elasticity.

Cellulite is found in the topmost or superficial layer of fat underneath the skin. Surgeons do liposuction on the second or deep layer of fat. So the expensive liposuction cannot offer complete results. Cellulite laser treatment massages and softens the skin tissue, allows for a more effective way to remove cellulite. And cellulite laser treatment can be used in conjunction with liposuction, allowing for improved results in a much shorter period of time. Dermatologists and other certified specialists also use machines, such as the endermologies machine, to pinch the skin and smooth out cellulite. These professional treatments for reducing cellulite are quite costly these days.

There are a number of different products that claim to smooth out the skin and take away the lumpiness, but none seem to have any kind of permanent effect on the epidermal appearance. Cellulite treatments dietary supplements claim to have positive effects on the body such as boosting metabolism, improving circulation, protecting against cell damage, and breaking down fats.

Cellulite cream is safe and effective product that you apply directly to the problem zones. Anti cellulite cream is only a temporary technique for cellulite reduction. It couldn't remove the 'orange peel' cellulite appearance completely. These anti cellulite products are made of ingredients that help improve the appearance of cellulite. Among the ingredients that are commonly found in cellulite reduction creams are caffeine, vitamins, and green tea extract.

Massage is also a way to improve the circulation and reduce cellulite. You could combine an anti cellulite cream with massage if you want to see faster results of cellulite removal. A hand-held massage brush with either wooden or rubber pegs feels great and is inexpensive.

A proper diet mixed with exercise will help reduce the appearance of cellulite. Although they cannot get rid of cellulite as fast as you want, they are the most natural, safe, healthy w! ays for c! ellulite reduction and removal. Cellulite can be gradually eliminated by detoxification of body and speeding up metabolism. A healthy metabolism will remove cellulite forever.

Psychologists Argue for the Right to Prescribe Medicines

Posted: 28 Aug 2012 02:00 AM PDT

Psychologists have traditionally not been allowed to prescribe medications for their patients, but some argue that giving them this right would be better for patients, and is also vital to the future of the profession.

After a nearly 30-year push from psychologists, just two states, New Mexico and Louisiana, have passed bills allowing psychologists who complete additional education to prescribe. Last year, six states (Arizona, Hawaii, Montana, New Jersey, Oregon and Tennessee), were considering similar bills.

Unlike psychiatrists, who can prescribe drugs, psychologists do not have degrees in medicine, and opponents argue that this makes them unqualified to prescribe powerful medications. But there are not enough psychiatrists to go around, and some say psychologists could make up for this dearth, and improve patients' access to care.

Now, psychologists say they fear that the movement to integrate health care services could leave psychologists out of mental health care.

New health care legislation "is specifically focused on getting teams of doctors to work together," said Stephen Ragusea, a clinical psychologist in Key West, Fla. "In order for psychologists to fit into that model, we need to know more about psychoactive medications, and how to integrate psychology with overall medical care," Ragusea said.

Ragusea noted that other health care professionals without M.D. degrees, such as nurse practitioners and physician assistants, have prescribing rights. "I have some concerns that psychologists may be replaced with those people, if we cannot prove our value to society overall," Ragusea said.

Prescribing benefits

In 2002, New Mexico became the first state to allow psychologists to prescribe, followed by Louisiana in 2004. In both states, psychologists must earn a master's degree in psychopharmacology, which is the study of how psychiatric drugs act on the body, and then must work for one year under supervision.

Psychologists in the military can also prescribe medications if they complete the appropriate training.

Elaine LeVine, of Las Cruces, N.M., said she became a prescribing psychologist because she wanted to understand the effects of the medications her patients were using.

Many of her patients say they prefer seeing one person for both their talk therapy and medications, she said.

In addition, she often uses her prescribing privileges to take people off medications who have been put on them unnecessarily, a problem she runs into particularly with child patients. "The right to prescribe is also the right to un-prescribe," LeVine said.

Before the New Mexico bill was passed, there were about 100 psychiatrists in the state, LeVine said. In the last 10 years, about 30 psychologists have completed the education to prescribe, a number of whom live in small towns. "You can see it really has increased access to care," LeVine said.

About 70 psychologists in Louisiana can prescribe, and 100 in the military, LeVine said.

Many more psychologists have completed the training, but their states have yet to pass laws giving them prescribing rights, Ragusea said.

Opposition

Others argue that psychologists do not know enough about the human body or medical diagnoses to be able to prescribe psychiatric drugs.

By the time psychiatrists have completed medical school and a four-year residency, they have logged more than 10,000 hours of training, said Dr. Lisa Rone, an assistant professor of clinical psychiatry at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. In contrast, prescribing psychologists receive about 450 hours of psychopharmacology training, Rone said.

"We do not feel that this qualifies them for safely prescribing medication," she said.

In addition, psychologists have little, if any, experience diagnosing illnesses such as epilepsy and cancer that can produce psychiatric symptoms, said Dr. Jeremy Lazarus, president of the American Medical Association.

"The privilege of prescribing these powerful medications requires such intensive training and education because the stakes are so high," Lazarus said in a statement.

Psychologists counter that, in the 10 years they have been prescribing, there has not been one complaint to state licensing boards or word of a negative incident, Ragusea said.

And a review of prescribing psychologists in the military found that, while psychiatrists involved in the training initially had reservations about the idea, many rated the care of the prescribing psychologists as good to excellent, according to a report from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).

Impact of laws

Michael Fitzpatrick, executive director at NAMI, said the first steps to improve patient care should be to provide better psychopharmacology training to general practitioners, and then to train more nurse practitioners and physician's assistants to prescribe.

"Jumping immediately to giving prescribing rights to psychologists… doesn't make sense to us," Fitzpatrick said. For prescribing drugs, "our comfort level is higher with people who are trained in medicine," Fitzpatrick said. NAMI receives much of it's funding from pharmaceutical companies.

The real impact of the laws in New Mexico and Louisiana are not yet known, and should be studied before more laws are passed, Fitzpatrick said.

If psychologists do get the right to prescribe in all states, it will likely be a long way off, said Ragusea, who noted it took many years for psychologists to be able to earn the right to practice independently.

"Medicine is extremely protective of its turf," Ragusea said.

Pass it on: The right to prescribe medications is vital to the future of psychology, some argue.

Fitness in Middle-Age Linked with Fewer Diseases Later in Life

Posted: 28 Aug 2012 01:00 AM PDT

CREDIT: Man sit-ups via Shutterstock

People who are physically fit during middle age have not only a higher chance of living longer, but also are less likely to suffer from chronic diseases later in life, compared with their less fit counterparts, a new study says.

Researchers measured the physical fitness of nearly 19,000 healthy people in their 30s, 40s and 50s using a treadmill test, and then compared their chronic diseases in their 70s and 80s. They found that the fittest people were nearly half as likely to suffer from a chronic disease compared with the least fit.

Additionally, they found a 20 percent increase in fitness during middle age was associated with a 20 percent decreased risk of developing any of the eight chronic diseases looked at in the study.

"Being fit is not just delaying the inevitable, but it is actually lowering the onset of chronic disease in the final years of life," said study author Dr. Jarett Berry, assistant professor of internal medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

The researchers used data gathered by the Cooper Center Longitudinal Study, which began in 1970. For the new findings, researchers measured each participant's fitness by observing them on a treadmill, and grouped them into five levels of fitness, taking age and gender into account.

As the participants approached old age, the researchers looked at how many of them had eight chronic diseases: heart failure, stroke, diabetes, kidney disease, Alzheimer's, colon or lung cancer, heart disease and lung disease. The researchers obtained the data on chronic diseases from Medicare claims the participants filed between ages 70 and 85.

Though studies have shown that fitness may increase longevity, the new research shows that it also can stave off chronic diseases, meaning that in addition to living longer, those who were fit in middle age also improve their quality of life into old age, the researchers said.

The effects lasted to the end of life, with fitter people living with less chronic disease even during the last five years of their lives.

The researchers had also asked participants during middle age about exercise habits; however, their performance on the treadmill test is what ultimately represented their fitness.

In an accompanying editorial, Dr. Diane Bild of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, noted that tests of physical endurance were more strongly linked with longevity and instance of chronic disease, most likely because the test is objective, while self-reporting exercise is not.

Though the nearly 80 percent of the study participants were male, both men and women saw the protective effects of such exercise. The authors acknowledged that those included in the study tended to be well-educated and were primarily white, so the results may not apply to the general population.

Adults are recommended to get at least 150 minutes of physical activity weekly, the authors noted.

Pass it on: Being fit in middle age likely leads to a longer and healthier life — with lower chance of suffering from chronic disease.

Is Debt Reduction on Your Mind? Simple Tips to Begin Reducing Your Debt

Posted: 28 Aug 2012 12:00 AM PDT

Article by A.C. West

With finances becoming tighter and prices on gas and food increasing, debt reduction has become an idea that is on many people's minds. If you are wondering how you are going to pay your bills each month and wish that you could reduce your debt at the same time, then read on for these tips to give you some ideas on how to make this dream a reality.

The most important step to take is to have a positive attitude and realize that you can do this. Even when your situation is looking bleak, just think about how great it will feel to no longer receive credit card and loan statements and not needing to worry any time the phone rings wondering if it is a creditor. You will have so much less stress and anxiety and you will even money in your savings account for emergencies or "rainy days." Think of all of the positives about reaching your goal. Make a list and write it down so you can look at the list any time you are feeling down about your financial situation.

Next, make a budget. Write down each and every penny you spend even if it is for a cup of coffee or a piece of candy. You need to know where every cent is going. Use your budget to see where you can eliminate or cut back on some expenses. Find ways to save money any way you can.

Finally, after reviewing your budget, use the extra money you have found through reduced or eliminated expenses towards your debt reduction. Tackle on debt at a time, starting with either the smallest balance or the highest interest rate, and work towards paying the balance in full. Once you have one paid off, continue to the next debt and repeat the process.

Just remember to keep a positive attitude and work towards your goal of becoming debt free. Debt reduction is not going to happen overnight but with persistence and determination you will be able to reach your goal!

Does Stress and Anxiety Make Eyesight Worse?

www.envisionselfhealing.com - Improve Eyesight and Quality of Life by Taking Healing into Your Own Hands Does Stress and Anxiety make eyesight worse? By now we all know that stress and anxiety have a negative effect on our bodies and mind, but what about our vision? I divided the effects into physical and psychological effects on our eyesight. The first physical effect is the reduction in blinking when we are stressed. The average person should blink around 20 times a minute. However, the modern day person blinks half of this and, when in a stressful situation or working at the computer, this rate halves again. Constant focus all day on documents or on the computer creates an accumulated stress on the eyes. I am sure all of you have experienced after a long days work that your eyesight is worse, otherwise known as eyestrain. You experience such symptoms as dry, itchy eyes and a sense of visual fatigue or tiredness. Unfortunately, instead of resting our eyes and working to improve our eyesight naturally, we tend to get glasses or increase our prescription. The other side of visual stress is psychological stress. Again I am sure we have all noticed that in certain times of emotional stress, our eyesight is worse. This was first noticed by Dr William Bates in the 1800's when using a retinoscope to evaluate clients eyes. He found that their sight was poorer when they were emotionally stressed or fatigued. A Hot Stone Massage Can Put Stress and Anxiety to Rest

Posted: 27 Aug 2012 11:00 PM PDT

Article by Chris Turley

While New York City is the "city that never sleeps," Earth seems to be the "planet that never stops." Modern life has made us busier than ever, and it has had a significant effect on our lifestyle, including our sleeping patterns. Between the errands and the yard work and bookkeeping for our home, it seems that we barely have enough time to relax, let alone sleep. In addition, a hectic lifestyle could also result in more anxiety, which can keep us awake when the sandman should be paying us a visit.

Sleeping "enough"

How much sleep is enough? Many of us have the notion that we always need eight hours of sleep. But is that accurate? It is, and it is not. Healthy adults require about 7-9 hours of sleep nightly. However, just as every person has a unique set of DNA and fingerprints, every person has unique sleeping needs. As a general rule, if you wake up in the morning without the aid of an alarm clock, a nudge, or a bucket of cold water, then you have slept enough.

Sleeping well and long

Also, you should consider that the quality of the sleep, and not just the quantity. In fact, your brain needs to experience five complete sleep phases, and it needs to stay in each phase for a particular amount of time. When those stages are disrupted, then you feel less rested. And not getting enough sleep can have more consequences than just feeling drowsy. Sleep depravation can cause you to function less effectively during the day, and is a significant cause of accidents involving automobiles. Besides the time factor, other causes of poor sleep patterns include:

* Biorhythm changes (light-dark cycles)

* Caffeine in beverages and drinks (caffeine has a half-life of 7.5 hours)

* Cigarettes, which include stimulants

* Hot flashes

* Limb movement disorder

* Medications

* Pain and disease

When parasympathetic sympathizes

Fortunately, hot stone massages can help. Therapy via massage can reduce the stress and tension in one's body. But that i! s not al l! Massage therapy can also improve the quantity and quality of your sleep. How does it accomplish that? First, keep in mind that the two parts of our automatic nervous system are the parasympathetic and sympathetic portions.

When you get a massage with hot stones, the parasympathetic portion of your nervous system is switched on. This allows your body to relax. However, when you feel like pulling your hair out, the sympathetic part of your automatic nervous system is switched on. This causes your body to choose one of two options: "fight" or "flight." In other words, your body will either try to deal with problematic situations, or avoid them. So the parasympathetic can actually balance out the sympathetic. And when that happens, falling asleep becomes a piece of cake.

The magic stone

As the saying goes, the proof is in the pudding. Various scientific studies have proven that therapeutic massages, such as those with hot stones, improve how much sleep we get and how good it is. Other benefits of hot stone massages include:

* Anxiety reduction

* Back pain reduction

* Circulation improvement

* Depression reduction

* Endorphins (think natural painkillers) release

* Immunity boost

* Joint flexibility increase

* Medication dependence reduction

* Migraine relief

* Muscle improvement

* Range of motion improvement

For many of us, getting four hours of sleep seems like a major accomplishment. However, a lack of sleep not only affects our body, but also how well we can function throughout the day. Fortunately, hot stone massages can allow our bodies and minds to relax, increasing our ability to get enough quality sleep each night. It will put your stress and anxiety to rest.

Everything will be OK when you are OK with everything

Posted: 27 Aug 2012 11:00 PM PDT

The title of this post isn't my own thought. It's from Michael Singer, author of "The Untethered Soul," a book I've been re-reading. Or re-re-reading (can't remember which). That's how much I like the book.

Which is sort of strange, because I don't believe we humans have, or are, a soul. And I also don't believe in the sort of pure awareness that Singer talks about in much the same way Ramana and other Advaita'ish teachers do.

Yet this is precisely one of Singer's main points: we can't make everything in life conform to our notions of how things should be. Including a book. Seems obvious, but it's an obviousness that isn't taken to heart by most people.

You just stop telling your mind that its job is to fix your personal problems. This job has broken the mind and disturbed the entire psyche. It has created fear, anxiety, and neurosis. Your mind has very little control over this world.

...Just relieve your mind of the job of making sure that everybody and everything will be the way you need them to be so that you can feel better inside. Your mind is not qualified for that job. Fire it, and let go of your inner problems instead.

You can have a different relationship with your mind. Whenever it starts up telling you what you should or shouldn't do in order to get the world to match your preconceived concepts, don't listen.

...The truth is, everything will be okay as soon as you are okay with everything. And that's the only time everything will be okay.

Like I said, this isn't a new revelation.

Lots of psychology, self-help, and spiritual books have the same message. Singer, though, has an appealing writing style. He's brought me to look upon happiness, balance, and managing unproductive thoughts in a fresh way.

A non-religious way, because Singer is focused on the evident worldly here-and-now, not an imaginary heavenly there-and-then. Everything we need for our "spiritual" evolution is present in our everyday life.

It's all about becoming aware of energies, those emotions, impulses, reactions, and such in our psyche that push us off-balance. One moment life is good; the next, someone has said something or done something which makes us mad, irritated, anxious, pissed-off.

How did we get from calm and collected, happily going about our day, to worked-up and scattered? How is it that a small comment or action can have such a big effect on our well-being? Isn't it crazy that we're so sensitive to the goings-on inside our own head?

Many spiritually-minded people try to get their lives in order through unproductive ways. One is to follow a set of rigid rules/commandments which restrict what they can and cannot do. Thou shalt not eat meat, drink alcohol, have sex outside of marriage, use profanity, dance dirty -- that sort of stuff.

Another is to seek control of the mind via some meditation or prayer technique. The assumption is that the mind is an unruly animal which has to be tamed through effort. Sitting still for hours, repeating a mantra, praying for God's or the guru's grace, envisioning one's compassionate Buddha nature -- that sort of stuff.

In my experience, spiritual or religious people can attempt these approaches for many years or even decades, yet still be as neurotic, anxious, unhappy, and hard to live with as they were before setting out on their journey of self/God-realization.

One reason is that they aren't focused on living real lives in the real world. Instead, they try to wall off the world, withdrawing into a fenced-off psychological realm where they subsist on a steady diet of dogma, beliefs, self-talk, and other so-called "inner work."

Which is bullshit, because they never get down to the nitty-gritty of dealing with the energies in their psyche stimulated by everyday events. Like having someone cut you off on the freeway, yell at you at work, or break up with you in a messy fashion.

Singer writes:

Begin with the little things. For example, somebody says something to you that you don't like, or worse yet, doesn't acknowledge you at all. You are walking along and you see a friend. You say hello to them but they just keep walking by. You don't know if they didn't hear you or if they actually ignored you. You aren't sure if they're mad at you or what's going on.

You mind starts going a mile a minute. Good time for a reality check! There are billions of people on this planet and one of them didn't say hello to you. Are you saying that you can't handle that? Is that reasonable?

Use those little things that happen in daily life to free yourself. In the above example, you simply choose not to get involved in the psyche. Does that mean that you stop your mind from going around in circles trying to figure out what's going on? No. It simply means that you are ready, willing, and able to watch your mind create its little melodrama.

Watch all its noise about how hurt you are, and how could anybody do that. Watch the mind try to figure out what to do about it. Just marvel at the fact that all of this is going on simply because someone didn't say hello to you. It's truly unbelievable. Just watch the mind talk, and keep relaxing and releasing. Fall behind the noise.

"Fall behind the noise." "Fall behind the energy." Singer has different ways of saying the same thing which resonate with me.

I can feel this happen when I start to be carried away by a wave of righteous indignation, or whatever, then take a breath, pause, slow down, and feel my psychological center return to a place of balance behind that emotional energy.

It's still rushing on, and I'm aware of it, but I don't feel a strong need to surf along on top of it, being carried along by a breaking wave of impulse which often crashes onto an Unhappiness Reef.

Here's more Singer:

Ultimately, every change in your energy flow, whether it's agitation of the mind or shifts in the heart, will be what reminds you that you are back there noticing. Now what used to hold you down becomes what wakes you up. But first you have to get quiet enough so that it's not so reactive in there.

These trigger points will help remind you to remain centered. Eventually it will become quiet enough so that you can simply watch the heart begin to react, and let go before the mind starts. At some point in the journey it all becomes heart, not mind. You will see that the mind follows the heart.

...Would you like to go beyond? Would you like to feel no edges? Imagine a comfort zone that is so expanded that it can easily fit the entire day, no matter what happens. The day unfolds, and the mind doesn't say anything. You simply interact with the day with a peaceful, fully inspired heart.

...You end up loving your edges because they point the way to freedom. All you have to do is constantly relax and lean into them.

Herbs For Effective Stress Relief

Herbal Stress Relief: Natural Solutions

It seems like just about everyone is leading busy, hectic lives. Now, more than ever, people are looking for ways to deal with stress. And, for many, herbal stress relief is the answer they have been looking for.

Using herbal remedies and treatments to deal with illnesses and ailments has become very popular in the last few years. People have come to value natural solutions over chemical or artificial ones. And no doubt herbal remedies are the ultimate, natural solution for whatever is ailing you.

There are two herbs that are known, and have been proven, to be effective against stress. They are ginseng and kava kava.

The Stress Relieving Power of Ginseng

When it comes to stress, it's not so much the stressful situation you have to deal with that are the problem, but how you react to them.

When you are faced with a stressful situation, and you react to it with fear, anxiety, or tension, your adrenal gland starts to pump out stress hormones. These hormones are fine in small doses. But, if these hormones are pumping through your system for a prolonged period of time, they can actually weaken your immune system, raise your blood pressure, put strain on your heart, and cause you to feel extreme fatigue.

Ginseng helps make your reaction to stressful situations less intense, so you to stay more calm and in control. The result is a reduction in the amount of stress hormones that are released into your system. If you are already experiencing the effects of stress, like fatigue or poor concentration, ginseng can help with that, too. This wonderful herb can help boost your energy, as well as improving your mental alertness. Ginseng can also help improve your overall mood and sense of well being.

Fight Stress with Kava Kava

If you are feeling really stressed, nervous, or anxious, taking some kava kava could have you feeling calmer and more relaxed in as little as half an hour.

Like ginseng, kava kava can help t! o reduce your reaction to a stressful situation. So, if you are nervous about giving a speech, taking this herb can help to calm you down, and stay calm and in control through your presentation.

Kava kava can also help soothe frazzled nerves and relax tense muscles. It is very much the perfect herb to have on hand after a busy day at work. Not only will kava kava help you relax, it will also improve your mood.

There are many very good techniques you can use to manage stress. But, if you are looking for herbal stress relief, ginseng and kava kava are the perfect places to start.
