The 'Obese Brain' Fuels Overeating

ORLANDO, Fla. – Obesity may cause changes to the brain that actually fuel more overeating, recent research suggests.

Such a vicious cycle may be a reason why people find it especially hard to lose weight once they become obese, said Terry Davidson, director of the Center for Behavioral Neuroscience at American University in Washington, D.C.

In a talk here at the American Psychological Association meeting, Davidson said that high-sugar, high-fat foods often found in a Western diet have been shown in animal models to impair the function of the brain's hippocampus. This brain area is important for memory, and is thought to help control food intake. Rats that have their hippocampus damaged will eat too much and gain weight, Davidson said.

The hippocampus also helps suppress unwanted thoughts or memories. If the hippocampus is impaired in obese people, they may find it hard to suppress thoughts of food, and as a consequence, more likely to eat food when they see it, Davidson said.

If the results from animal studies hold true in people, researchers may be able to develop new therapies to help obese people lose weight.

"We've identified a potential area of the brain that should be a target for either psychological or pharmacological therapies," Davidson said. If the damage to the hippocampus can be repaired, "it should make it easier for people to control their [food] intake," Davidson said.

Researchers have identified several ways that high-fat and high-sugar foods may hurt the hippocampus. In one study, rats fed a Western diet developed a leaky blood-brain barrier, said Scott Kanoski, a behavioral neuroscientist at the University of Pennsylvania. If the blood-brain barrier is impaired, it would allow toxins to enter the brain, and potentially damage the hippocampus, Kanoski said. It could also allow immune system proteins to enter the brain, and cause brain inflammation, Davidson said.

Studies conducted by Kanoski and colleagues on rats have also found that a Western diet decreases the levels of a protein called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF, in part of the hippocampus. BDNF is known to be important for memory function, Kanoski said.

An increasing amount of research has also linked obesity to cognitive impairment in people, Davidson said. It may only be a matter of time before cognitive impairment, such as dementia, is considered a health consequence of obesity by government agencies, Davidson said.

When you learn to focus on your breathing and how to take deep breathes, it helps you to remove unwarranted stress.

When you learn to meditate, it helps you to find peace within, since your thoughts will gradually quiet. Meditation helps you to clear up clutter. Once you feel that sense of serenity, you will have affirmed your mind. This helps you to pay hold firm to what you intend to accomplish.

One must practice daily to meditate. Practice helps a person gain control over their thoughts. As you continue your journey through meditation, you may find areas of disturbance. In some instances, your mind may wander backwards to memories you do not like. Allow room to accept your discomforts and the thoughts to freely come forward. Remember, you lived it once, how can it harm you again? While you meditate you, do not want to force any actions or thoughts on your mind and body. Allow room for freedom. Once you completed your meditation, say a little prayer for those people suffering in the world. This will make room for added comfort.

From the last blog, I can see that The Zennist needs to get its ass in gear.  It can't lay claim to "beginner's mind"—that belongs to Zen master Shunyru Suzuki's American style Soto Zen sect which is trying to appeal to deluded minds.  It can't lay claim to Zen Master Joko Beck's "ordinary mind" or Genpo Roshi's "big mind."  Damn!  

What wait a cotton picking minute, there is something The Zennist can lay claim to.  I am sure the reader of this blog recalls the conversation between Bodhidharma and Emperor Wu of Liang when the latter asked Bodhidharma, "Who is before me?" and Bodhidharma replied, "I don't know (ไธ่ญ˜)." 

Yep, that's it.  We have a new school of Zen.  It's "I don't know Zen."  When a practitioner of Fushiki Zen (I don't know Zen) is asked anything about Zen they just have to say, "I don't know" and really pretend like they mean it.

I can see the money rolling in right now with the launch of Fushiki Zen.  I can see that Fushiki Zen will naturally appeal to all kinds of Westerners looking for the easiest and most simplistic route to nirvana; who are really too lazy to study Buddhism.

But wait a minute.  I did a lot of research about the Chinese character ่ญ˜.  I went through William Edward Soothill's magnum opus, A Dictionary of Chinese Stress Reduction Terms.  This term can mean the fifth aggregate (skandha), consciousness (vjinana), discrimination, distinguishing, perceiving, discerning, understanding, etc.  With the negative prefix, ไธ, the better rendering is "imperceptible"—not "I don't know."  This rendering fits within the context of the esoteric conversation that is taking place between Bodhidharma and Emperor Wu of Liang; moreover, it fits much better with the works attributed to Bodhidharma who was, by any measure, not your ordinary kind of guy.

Yes, indeed, the absolute or Buddha Mind is imperceptible.  If we want true merit then we have to comprehend it as impossible as it seems.  The comprehension of such a Mind consists of a pure gnosis (jรฑรขna) which is marvelous and perfect.  Its substance is empty and aloof.  It cannot be found in the world.  This is sure not like "I don't know."  Well, maybe Fushiki Zen ain't a bad term after all—I mean I was kidding before.  The more I think about it, Zen points to the absolute Mind which is truly imperceptible.  Sweet!

Firstly, you need to know where you spend your time. A scary statistic is people spend almost thirty hours a week watching TV. This is a tragic waste. So keep a tally for a week and find out how much time you spend on the unimportant things. You might be very surprised at what you find out.

Secondly - Plan, If you fail to prepare, prepare to fail. You should be planning each and every day with a To Do list.

Once you have done this you can break these down into smaller steps - this makes anything seem easier, this phrase says it all:

"Divide and Conquer"

At first this may seem a bit much, to plan each day with a To Do list but once you start you will find tasks are much easier to complete and you will forget far less things - This will automatically organize you.

Another great feeling is ticking things off as you complete them. If you have 10 things on your to do list and you have done 9 of them, that last task is a lot easier when you see all those ticks and how well you've done.

A common recommendation is to do the hardest or most difficult task on your list first. I find the opposite is true. If you start your day off doing some of the easier things it gets you into a good rhythm for the rest of the day and you can feel good ticking more tasks off your list.

Also if you are plagued by procrastination doing the most difficult thing first is almost a guaranteed time waster.

Give serious thought on these stress techniques. Managing your time should be a prio! rity for you as it has the ability to affect so many other areas of your life.

Use these techniques and you will certainly see a change in your organization and stress levels, you may even come across something called a work life balance!

When you learn to focus on your breathing and how to take deep breathes, it helps you to remove unwarranted stress.

When you learn to meditate, it helps you to find peace within, since your thoughts will gradually quiet. Meditation helps you to clear up clutter. Once you feel that sense of serenity, you will have affirmed your mind. This helps you to pay hold firm to what you intend to accomplish.

One must practice daily to meditate. Practice helps a person gain control over their thoughts. As you continue your journey through meditation, you may find areas of disturbance. In some instances, your mind may wander backwards to memories you do not like. Allow room to accept your discomforts and the thoughts to freely come forward. Remember, you lived it once, how can it harm you again? While you meditate you, do not want to force any actions or thoughts on your mind and body. Allow room for freedom. Once you completed your meditation, say a little prayer for those people suffering in the world. This will make room for added comfort.
