Why Mass Killers Aren't Necessarily Psychopaths

The term "psychopath" is often a misunderstood one; although people frequently refer to alleged mass killers like Colorado shooter James Holmes or the Tucson, Ariz., shooter Jared Loughner as psychopaths, that doesn't mean these men fit the description of this mental health disorder.

In the last week, a psychiatric evaluation report was released stating that after months of receiving treatment for schizophrenia, 23-year-old Loughner seemed to understand that he was agreeing to a guilty plea for the 2011 shooting rampage that killed six people and wounded 13 others, including then-Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.

Meanwhile, lawyers for Holmes announced they believe the 24-year-old suffers from mental illness, though they haven't yet determined the exact nature of his illness. Weeks before the shooting, Holmes' psychiatrist, Dr. Lynne Fenton, University of Colorado professor who specializes in schizophrenia, had alerted university police about Holmes' behavior.

But such evidence does not suggest that these men are psychopaths. Psychopaths are people who generally lack empathy, don't feel remorse or guilt for their actions and may use violence or intimidation to get what they want. They can be irresponsible, egocentric, charming and manipulative.

In contrast, a person who suffers from the mental illness of schizophrenia usually lives in their own reality, often experiencing hallucinations and delusions.

"People who commit mass murders are obviously not doing well," said Louis Schlesinger, a forensic psychologist at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York. "Just looking at Holmes' demeanor or behavior clearly suggests that, but that doesn't make him a psychopath."

And although psychopaths can be violent, that doesn't mean they commonly kill.

"Most psychopaths don't kill anybody," Schlesinger said, "and not everybody that kills is a psychopath."

According to Dr. Michael Welner, a forensic psychiatrist at New York University School of Medicine, while psychopaths do commit homicides, their motives tend to be specific – they are usually driven by money, sex or a desire to escape from the scene of another crime.

But for mass killers, a motive can be that they see themselves as failures, Welner said.

Mass killers can be men who "are painfully aware of themselves as social and sexual rejects in a society that values social desirability," Welner said. "And in a society that values achievement, they are aware of how they have fallen short, and in ways that will not reverse."

What drives someone to commit mass murder

There are different types of mass killings, all driven by a different motivation, said Dr. Douglas Mossman, a forensic psychiatrist at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

Killers might be motivated by grief, anger, resentment, or feeling used or mistreated, he said.

"There have been school massacres, hate crimes, workplace killings, even entire family killings," Mossman said. "In most cases, these followed fairly recent events that happened to individuals who responded in ways that led them to do what they did."

Mossman pointed to the case of Virginia Tech shooter Seung-Hui Cho, who had a history of anxiety and depressive disorders. Cho was involuntarily hospitalized due to his disturbing behavior about 16 months before the 2007 shooting, in which he killed 32 people and then himself.

But that doesn't mean that all mass killers suffer from mental illness, and "mass killers who do have serious mental illnesses only represent a small fraction of people with mental illnesses," Mossman said.

That small fraction generally includes people who suffer from severe mood disorders such as depression, psychoses like a particular type of schizophrenia, or some form of delusional disorder.

"Mental illness may create motives," he said, "such as a delusional belief that one is being persecuted by the government, or having one's thoughts monitored via one's metallic dental fillings."

Detecting someone with violent tendencies

Mass killings are generally committed by men, as are most violent crimes. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, men are nine times more likely to commit murder than women. And very few women have committed mass murders.

"Men have higher testosterone levels than women, making them more aggressive," Mossman said. "So there's something operating there at a basic biological level."

But experts also believe that starting in childhood, men are taught to be stoic and not show emotion. They are also encouraged to take risks, be aggressive and not show any sign of weakness or vulnerability.

"Boys get lots of social messages about responding violently to wrongs," Mossman said. "Clint Eastwood and Sylvester Stallone got wealthy conveying that message."

People who are severely troubled, and even paranoid, can lead relatively normal lives, making it difficult for anyone, even mental health professionals, to determine whether someone is actually a threat.

"People exhibit different kinds of behavior or thinking patterns that could possibly lead to a violent act," Mossman said. "But the problem is that there are hundreds of individuals who display these same patterns, who don't go on to act violent."

Pass it on: Mass killers have different motivations for committing murder, but they aren't necessarily psychopaths.

Mind Yourself!

Mindfulness
by RubyJi

Article by Karen Hastings, Edinburgh

The intention is good, I decide to take myself out for a walk in the beautiful woods surrounding the village where I live, to refresh my mind and get some exercise. It's usually on the way back that I realise that I've hardly noticed my surroundings and have often been focused on the next activity in my day, thinking something along the lines of 'I'll just get this walk done and then I will go shopping". Does this sound familiar?

Working using Cognitive therapy, during NLP, CBT and Hypnotherapy sessions in Hertfordshire and now Edinburgh, time and time again I see this approach to life exaggerated in client's with anxiety based disorders and depression. Specifically, individuals with anxiety and depression often struggle to appreciate the moment, as their attention is taken up with worrying about the "What If's" or re-visiting past events over and over again.

To give you an example, one of my clients attending NLP, CBT and Hypnotherapy sessions, Edinburgh, has recently overcome his fairly long held fear of having a panic attack whilst driving on main roads, using CBT techniques. This client had been using the journey to our sessions to develop driving confidence and had really made substantial progress in overcoming this fear, which until a few weeks before had been an big problem for him. When I enquired as to how he found the experience of driving to our CBT session, in Edinburgh, he realised that he hadn't been able to appreciate his achievement as he had been ruminating about an event some years ago, the whole way over!

The tendency to not live in the moment isn't only limited to people with anxiety or depression, as I regularly demonstrate to myself on my forest walk. However, living in the moment is something we can learn to do through the practice of mindfulness.

The practice of mindfulness, which has its origins in Buddhism, is now considered within cognitive therapy approaches, as a wonderful skill to be learnt to encourage relaxation and to stress proof your life.! It is v ery helpful way of reducing anxious and depressive thinking. Mindfulness involves the purposeful direction of ones attention and awareness to staying with our experience in the moment.

For example, on my forest walk, to be mindful would involve concentrating on the colours and textures of the flora, the feel of the breeze against my skin, the patterns the clouds make in the sky, the sounds of birds and wildlife, or the way the ground feels beneath my feet. This purposefulness is crucial to being mindful. It allows us to fully experience and appreciate life in the moment, creating calmness.

All to often we proceed through daily life, only vaguely aware of our thoughts as they wander in an unrestricted way. For some, the mind can tend to indulge in anxious, depressive, self-pitying, angry or self-defeating thoughts, recreating and installing negative emotions. By practising mindfulness, and purposefully redirecting our attention towards our experience in the moment, you can learn to create space, calmness and contentment in your life.

Mindfulness can be applied to any activity from waking up, sitting in a comfy chair, brushing your teeth, breathing or eating. For example, when eating, being mindful would involve focusing on this activity without reading, talking or watching TV. Take time to really look at the colours and textures of your food, to notice the feeling you get from anticipating the taste. Also notice how the food feels and tastes in your mouth, the different flavours, temperature etc. A tip is to approach your experience as if it's the first time, with curiosity, getting rid of the "been there done that attitude".

Becoming mindful is similar to relaxation techniques in that it takes time to discipline our minds to remain in the moment, and practice is required. It's fine to start small with perhaps just five minutes at the start and end of each day and build up. It's certainly something that I am learning to do alongside my clients!

Why Kids' Snoring Can Cause Behavioral Problems

Children who persistently snore during their early childhood may be more likely to have behavioral problems such as aggression and hyperactivity, according to a new study.

Researchers studied 249 mother-child pairs and found the children who snored at both age 2 and age 3 were nearly 3.5 times more likely to have signs of behavioral issues when compared with those who did not snore at these ages, or who only snored during one of those years. Among the kids who snored at both ages, 35 percent showed signs of behavioral problems, while 10 percent in nonsnorers, and 12 percent in kids who only snored for one year, showed such signs.

The findings show the importance of getting good sleep, the researchers said.

"We know that if you take away naps for preschoolers, and then give them challenging tasks, they're grumpier," said lead study author Dean Beebe, director of the neuropsychology program at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.

The researchers tracked the children starting during their mothers' pregnancies until they were 3 years old, conducting phone interviews with mothers every few months to get a sense of their children's sleeping patterns and other activities. The researchers also met with the children every year to assess levels of behavioral problems in a face-to-face setting.

The finding is in line with previous work showing an association between snoring and behavioral issues, particularly when the snoring is persistent.

The problems with snoring

A person snores when they are having difficulty breathing during sleep. This difficulty could be the result of anything from a cold or allergies to enlarged adenoid glands; in each case, snoring causes problems by disrupting sleep, restricting oxygen and requiring more effort to breathe.

"It'snot like in the cartoons, where snoring is what signifies sleep," Beebe said.

In the short term, as in the case of a cold, this is not problematic, but consistent snoring over months or years affects a child's mood and brain.

Children who don't get enough good sleep will not be as easygoing as other kids, and will be more likely to have behavior problemsdue to this grumpiness, Beebe said. Adults will come to expect grumpiness from the child, and may treat him or her differently.

From a neurological standpoint, lack of proper sleep inhibits the development of pathways between neurons in the brain, Beebe said.

"We're talking about a brain that is constantly remodeling through early childhood, with connections being strengthened and weakened," he said.

Fixing the underlying cause of snoring can help to reverse these effects, but because parents don't realize the problems with snoring, it often goes untreated.

"Bad sleep, to most parents, is the stuff that disrupts the parents' sleep," Beebe said.

Breast-feeding and socioeconomic status

The researchers found that children were more likely to snore if they weren't breast-fed as babies, or if they were from a lower socioeconomic class.

Children of lower socioeconomic status face a number of risk factors, from worse air quality to poor nutrition that may make it harder for them to sleep soundly, Beebe said.

Breast-feeding, which is more challenging for an infant than drinking from a bottle, may remodel the airway to reduce snoring. Additionally, breast milk increases a child's immunity, and spending less time being sick may also mean less snoring.

Additionally, the bonding that occurs between a mother and child during breast-feeding could also serve to alleviate behavioral problems, said Karen Bonuck, professorof family and social medicine at New York's Albert Einstein College of Medicine, who was not involved in the study.

Overall, the new study was impressive in size and methods, particularly because the researchers assessed children's behavioral issues in person, Bonuck said.

The results show that snoring is not normal in childhood, Bonuck said, citing another recent study that found that nearly half of parents considered snoring a sign of healthy sleep.

"Don't dismiss snoring as benign," she said.

Pass it on: Snoring in children as young as age 2 can cause behavioral problems later in life.

Getting To Know More About Yoga Blocks And Props

Posted: 13 Aug 2012 10:00 AM PDT

Article by Lexoremman

It is now very common to see people becoming more and more interested in yoga and the reasons for this are quite few. It has been proven beyond doubt that yoga is a holistic approach to health problems, both physical and mental. There are a number of exercise which results in amazing benefits if they are done on a regular basis. This is perhaps the only bunch of exercises that addresses the mental, physical and spiritual well being of an individual. It is one of the few exercises that is very cost effective and even ordinary persons can aspire to perform simple yoga exercises after a few of days of training from a yoga guru. Further yoga does not require specialized equipment or cost accessories as is the case with a number of gym exercises where there is a need to spend a lot of money.

However, there are some basic things that are required for performing yoga the right way. These small things are needed because the performance of yoga involves a number of bodily contortions. Though experienced people can do it in the floor beginners may find it quite difficult to easily get into some asanas or poses as they are more commonly known. For such people it would be advisable to use the various to use the various yoga blocks and props which could help them to do the asanas with ease and without the risk of getting hurt or injured. Over the next few lines we will be discussing more about these yoga props and blocks and find out how they can make the whole job of yogasana comfortable and easy.

As the word itself suggests a yoga props are basically used as tools to support your body and to help you get to the perfect position which is crucial as far as performing the various asanas are concerned. On the other hand a yoga block is also a kind of a prop which helps a sick person to get into a perfect asana which otherwise would not be possible. Though yoga is indeed a holistic approach but the problem with it is that all the asanas have to be done properly and as instructed by your teacher. If it! is not done in the right way it could become counter productive and could also run you into getting into some avoidable injuries. In such situations yoga blocks and props can help you to do the asanas in the right way.

There are some very difficult poses in yoga and the persons doing such poses are supposed to be in that position for a particular period of time. In such situations these yoga blocks can come in very handy. There are hundreds of such poses that one can think of as far as yoga is concerned. One particular pose or asana is called "pincha mayurasana" which actually means as the "feathered peacock pose". This is a very difficult pose and can be done only with the help of proper yoga blocks. It would also be not out of place to mention here that yoga and meditation music can go very well together and there are some very soothing and clean music that can use be very useful in helping people to perform these difficult yogic asanas.

Yoga blocks are usually made from a variety of materials. The most commonly used materials or bamboo and cork. These materials apart from being comfortable on the persons are also very eco friendly and hence they are the preferred materials for various yoga blocks and props. Though foam is also used as material from the environment point of view bamboo and cork are the preferred materials. They are also very light in weight. These yoga blocks and props are sold individually and also in blocks but it would always be advisable to buy both the necessary blocks and props for the best results. The blocks also help a lot in the alignment of the body and are often found to be very useful for performing those standing asanas which require having one hand on the floor. They are also very useful for performing a number of sitting poses.

The blocks help improve the body alignment and are especially useful in standing poses which require one hand to be on the floor. They can work as great transitional aids while doing yoga. The foam yoga block will reduce the distance o! f the ha nd from the ground helping you to get the correct pose. They are also useful for some sitting poses. Further it has been generally believed that when an individual is required to work at three different heights, the use of yoga blocks and props become almost indispensable. There is one particular pose called Half Moon Pose (Ardha Chandrasana). This is a standing pose which requires the doer to see that one leg is extended parallel to the floor while the balancing is done with the use of the arm. This pose is a very difficult one and it cannot be done properly without the use of the right kind of yoga blocks and props. Yoga and meditation music go together and so it would be advisable to go in for some soothing music which will help you to concentrate better while performing even the most difficult of asanas.

Bamiyan Buddhas: Should they be rebuilt?

Posted: 13 Aug 2012 10:00 AM PDT

Stephanie Hegarty, BBC: The destruction of Afghanistan's Bamiyan Buddhas in 2001 led to global condemnation of the Taliban regime. But the decision by Unesco not to rebuild them has not put an end to the debate about their future.

When the Taliban were at the height of their power in Afghanistan, leader Mullah Omar waged a war against idolatry.

His biggest victims, in size as well as symbolism, were two standing stone Buddhist statues. Once the largest in the world – one measured 55 metres in height – they were carved into the sandstone cliff face of the Bamiyan valley in central Afghanistan during the 6th Century …

Stop Stressing-Get a Therapeutic Massage

Posted: 13 Aug 2012 09:00 AM PDT

Article by Fred Savinelli

Researchers have been studying the benefits of therapeutic massage since as far back as the late 1800's. The basic objective of this time-honored therapy is not only to promote medical, physical and emotional well being, but to heal the body as well. Let's explore some of the benefits one can enjoy through the continued use of therapeutic massage.

Attention and focus: Researchers have found that people who work in offices and receive regular therapeutic massages were less stressed and more alert than those who didn't include it in their regular health routines. Therapeutic massage has also proven to reduce the erratic behavior normally found in autistic individuals. Pain Relief: Athletes are touting the wonders of therapeutic massage for relief from sprained ligaments and muscles that often result when they push their bodies too hard. Pregnant women everywhere are experiencing relief from the discomforts of their expanding midsection with therapeutic massage and people who concentrate on a computer screen for long periods of time are reporting a reduction in stress and eye strain from the procedure.

Reduction of anxiety and stress: Studies have found that therapeutic massage helps to promote a relaxed state of mental alertness, foster peace of mind and relieve mental stress by responding to the signals of stress and addressing them. A particular study conducted on medical students revealed that those who received a therapeutic massage prior to an exam showed a significant reduction in their level of anxiety. A similar reduction of anxiety was found in cancer patients who participated in massage therapy.Healing: People who have been injured or fallen ill are reporting a faster and more complete recovery and rehabilitation resulting from therapeutic massage. It also benefits premature infants and those who have been diagnosed with the HIV virus.

Improved overall health: By improving one's blood circulation and strengthening the immune system, sufferers of high blood pressure are ! also fin ding healing relief through therapeutic massage. Many also report an increased flexibility and range of motion when using this therapy on an ongoing basis. Better posture, easier breathing and healthier skin are additional benefits of therapeutic massage, by providing a better state of well being.

Relief from anxiety and depression: Healthy emotional well-being is very important, especially in times like this when stress is running rampant. For relief from the effects of anxiety, stress and depression, many are turning away from medications and toward therapeutic massage.

Touch is the core component of therapeutic massage, which has been referred to as the combination of science and art. An expert sense of touch, combined with the correct amount of pressure applied to just the right area is a key factor in the healing and relaxation process. Overextended muscles create toxic waste in our muscles, resulting in muscles spasm, soreness and stiffness. Therapeutic massage has been shown to eliminate this waste while increasing circulation through the delivery of fresh oxygen to our bodies.

So what exactly is therapeutic massage? It is a systematic manipulation of soft tissues to assist in normalizing them. Therapeutic massage therapists primarily use their hands to apply pressure, but can also use their feet, forearms and elbows to perform the technique. To help the client relax during the therapeutic massage, the therapist will use light to medium pressure, depending on the client's preference.

The title of skinniest state in America still goes to Colorado, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

In 2011, Colorado's obesity rate was 20.7 percent — the lowest in the nation.

Between 2005 and 2009, Colorado remained the sole state with an obesity rate below 20 percent. Now, no state falls into that category, the CDC says.

In 2011, 39 states had obesity rates of over 25 percent, and 12 had obesity rates over 30 percent. The highest obesity rate was in Mississippi, in which 34.9 percent of the population is obese.

Obesity rates were high in the South in general, with about 30 percent of people in that region qualifying as obese. In the Midwest, the rate was 29 percent, followed by the Northeast at 25 percent, and the West at 24 percent.

After Colorado, the lowest obesity rates were found in Hawaii (21.8 percent), Massachusetts (22.7 percent), and New Jersey and Washington D.C. (both 23.7 percent).

After Mississippi, the states with the highest obesity rates were: Louisiana (33.4 percent), West Virginia (32.4 percent), Alabama (32 percent) and Michigan (31.3 percent).

Because the CDC made changes in the way it collects information about obesity in the country, estimates from 2011 onward cannot be compared with estimates made in the past. The current estimates come from a telephone survey known as the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, a national telephone survey that now includes cellphone-only households, as well as those with landlines.

Complications of obesity include heart disease, stroke, Type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer, the CDC says.

Pass it on: In 2011, Colorado had the lowest obesity rate, and Mississippi the highest.

Taoist and Yin Yoga 200-hour Teacher Training Certification Program Cincinnati Ohio

Posted: 13 Aug 2012 07:00 AM PDT

Article by Matt Eshleman, ERYT500

Taoist and Yin Yoga 200-hour Teacher Training Certification Program Cincinnati Ohio

We believe that to most effectively and safely practice or teach yoga, one must understand certain fundamental principles of anatomy.  There are so many different traditions and types of yoga, it is not possible to cover them all - and it can sometimes be difficult to discern the underlying unity.  Our view is that it does not matter what style of yoga you may practice, what we all have in common is a human body.  We will first develop an understanding of physical anatomy and form a common language for our discussions.  We will then learn to apply the fundamentals of anatomy to our personal practice and our teaching, including the important role of individual anatomical differences.  We will learn this first through the study of Yin Yoga, as the simple postures and slow pace will allow us the necessary time for posture analysis and discussion.  We will then carry this on to the study of yang movement sequences that are a great way to begin your practice and teaching of more dynamic yoga styles.

We will develop your understanding and your teaching from a functional perspective, meaning that our focus will be not aesthetic appearance or superficial alignment, but rather the actual intended effect of the technique and how to best produce that effect for each unique practitioner.  Without the common ground of anatomical understanding this is not possible, but with practical understanding of anatomy the function of the techniques and their application becomes clear.  We will discuss the theory of exercise and it's relevance to yoga asanas. We will experience the function of a diverse array of techniques through direct personal experience.

We will become comfortable teaching students with varied levels of ability and experience.  In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna says there are as many paths to God as there are people.  Each student you encounter will need something different from you as a teache! r.  If there is one message that we will carry throughout our training it is that every individual's yoga practice is ultimately unique, and the teacher's function is to guide the student's practice in order to help lead them to their own direct experience of their personal truth.

We will learn to practice and teach fundamental techniques of meditation. We will differentiate between two types of meditation: techniques used for relaxation or stress reduction, and techniques used for personal and spiritual evolution. We will first learn to practice and teach meditation techniques that are very simple and easy to teach to beginners. We will then explore subtle anatomy, the energetic system of the body, including chakras and meridians, and discuss the "bigger picture" of karma and reincarnation. We hope to clarify some of the confusion that can arise from studying any one tradition. We will put our theories into practice in asana, pranayama, and meditation sessions.

We will become familiar with the essential scriptures and philosophical texts of yoga.  We believe that the most important information about the yogic sciences are contained in just a few ancient texts.  Many contemporary authors write 'new' books that are essentially a paraphrase of the wisdom presented in these sacred writings, and often their personal biases can obscure the original message. Not to say that there are not some very good modern texts, but we can read a few hundred modern books trying to sort out these truths, or we can work to really understand a few seminal works. We shall do the latter.

We will prepare you for the realities of teaching yoga as a profession. This does not just mean that you will be certified, that's the easy part.... It means you will be able to teach effectively in any setting that you choose, to any student seeking your guidance. It means you will be able to find or create job opportunities, and effectively negotiate the compensation you deserve for being properly trained. It means you will be! ready t o go out into the real world and teach real students a practice that really helps them, and that requires an understanding that we will have to work hard for. It will be worth it.

How to Get Own Yoga Teacher Training Certification?

Posted: 13 Aug 2012 05:00 AM PDT

Article by Daveopton

To become a yoga teacher, you need yoga teacher certification. There are several ways to attain this. Some are more costly than others, also others are lengthier. Which option you choose depends on the amount of time you have to get the certification, as well as how much you're willing to pay?

Recently, a fellow Yoga teacher mentioned a startling concept. She went on to say, "The vast majority of Yoga instructors I meet are not certified." I was surprised to hear this; but she regularly hires Yoga teachers and reviews their credentials.

As a working Yoga teacher you would be expected to work with special populations, such people who have health problems, for example: those who suffer from Epilepsy.

Yoga trainer credentialing is relatively new. In the past when the study and practice of yoga was not as mainstream as it is now simply registering as a trainer was thought to be enough.

There are also home study yoga teacher training programs available. When looking at these, it's best to make sure that they also offer some type of way of interacting with the teacher/students while you are studying. This is usually done through online discussion groups or forums. You will need to provide yourself with a college enrolment in one of the better colleges that will teach not only the yoga poses but also the religion behind the exercises and the Indian culture. You may want to check out the Yoga fit.

The main principle of yoga revolves around the concept of mind over matter, and it teaches individuals to master one's mind and senses leading to the cessation of misery. Yoga, unlike other exercises, is an antithesis of the 'no pain, no gain' philosophy; graceful, fluid movement's replace muscle pounding workouts, creating a balance of mind, body and spirit.

Since you will need to teach people, you need to access the needs of the environment you reside in and determine if there is demand for Yoga lessons. You can also search the web for Yoga schools in your surrounding and al! so in hotels and fitness centres to determine the level of employment for any Yoga professional.

One type is yoga instructor certification. In order to get this certification you are given the possibility to choose one out of two programs. The two programs have different length. One is 200 hours and the other one is 500 hours. The 200 hours program is required since it gives all the training you need in order to work as a yoga instructor.

There may be a particular teacher with whom you enjoy studying yoga. He or she should be your first stop. Ask them if they have a yoga training program, or to recommend a particular yoga school.

There are many new forms of Hatha Yoga being created and evolving at this moment. If you have a traditional Yoga lineage, that's wonderful, but times change, and so does Yoga.

Once the training has started the student has to be prepared to undergo a specified number of hours studying asana, teaching techniques, anatomy, and philosophy. The cost for this training program starts at very reasonable prices and programs can last between two months to one year depending on the number of times the student attends classes.

At the end, I can say for becoming a good and successful yoga teacher you need to learn all types of yoga. Atmayoga.net is one the best web portal I believe for Yoga Teacher Training.

Debt Reduction does not get simpler than this

Posted: 13 Aug 2012 03:01 AM PDT

Article by Tom Morton

Debt Reduction seems to have become fashionable and its not considered a dirty word anymore. The economic slowdown and financial chaos and the resulting uncertainty created have probably been the most important factor in this change. Different circumstance gave rise to this change in attitude. For many it was not a choice, but simply imposed on them by losing their jobs or other situations, for others it was simply the impact of events that made them decide that debt reduction was the right thing to do. There is a process which we list below, that you can use you whittle down debt. These are general guidelines and may not practical and applicable to everyone. Seeking professional help is a good idea even if you choose to follow the process below. Using a professional mens increasing the money you save and reducing the time you spend on it. In the end the big benefit of this process is reducing the stress in your life and achieving financial freedom. The cost of using a professional almost always pays itself by the benefits received.

The Process for Debt Reduction is as follows:First you must get your debt organized and separate into three categories:Mortgages This is the type of debt that is secured by your house. This type of debt of some important advantages, first the interest gives you a tax deduction and secondly, it may be usable to reduce other debt that is much higher in interest.Installment Debt - This is debt that is paid at a fix rate for a set amount of time or months. Carr and personal bank loans fall into this category.

Revolving Debt This type of debt is almost synonymous with credit card debt were interest is added to the outstanding balance each month. Paying the minimum balance each month does not do much in retiring the loan and it may take 8 to 12 years or longer to do so.. You interest is not fixed either, which means they can raise as they wish. As we seen this past year many credit card companies raised their effective rate as high as 30%, not including other cha! rges that are imposed at their discretion. The biggest problems encountered are with revolving debt, naturally this is what debt reduction should address.1)First part of the process is to make a personal commitment to debt reduction and that you will stick with it until its achieved.2)Next you need to assess exactly what kind of debt you have, how much you owe and the monthly minimums. Best way is to prepare a worksheets that has columns for, type of debt, whom its owed to Interest rare, current balance, monthly minimum payment and any other information that you feel is important. The add the current balance and minimum payments and this will tell you the total amount of debt you have and how much you make each month to pay the minimum payments of all your debt.3)Prepare a budget. You already have the numbers for the amount you need to service your debt. The budget should include all other normal and necessary expenses including, rent (if any), utilities, insurance, food, clothing and anything else that is recurring.

4)Test your budget for a period of time, 3 months is usually good to determine if it need to be tweaked. Once you know you budget is representative of your monthly income and expenses, then you can begin to eliminate debt and begin your debt reduction program5)With any excess money each month dedicate it to eliminating debt. If you can pay a little extra on each account, concentrating on reducing the most expensive or revolving debt first. By paying something extra you monthly minimum payments are reduced and your budget surplus increases allowing for more debt reduction. This by itself will allow you to reduce debt quicker..6)Celebrate, that you have begun your journey to financial freedom. Treat yourself to something special, with no debt obviously.7)Go back to step 5 and repeat the process until you eliminated all debt. Repeating this cycle has the avalanche affect and before you know it you will have become debt free.

You may look at the above process and say to yourself tha! t its not! applicable in your case or numbers are not your thing. Dont despair or lose hope. There are circumstances were the above methods may not be applicable. You only need professional advice from those that can help you eliminate debt. Depending on your particular situation they will tailor a debt reduction plan for you and help you become debt free.

Reduction of PTSD Symptoms in Veterans with Transcendental Meditation

www.davidlynchfoundation.org Norman Rosenthal, MD (Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Georgetown University Medical School): Over half a million of our veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan are suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. These are people who have been exposed to violence on the battlefield serving for our country. And, as one of my patients said, it can happen once in your life but a hundred times in your mind. The echos linger on. Sarina Grosswald, Ed.D. (Cognitive Learning Specialist): With traumatic stress it's really some enormous stress that's more than the body can process, and it leaves a big impression on your brain. The estimates are that at least 30% of returning veterans are experiencing PTSD and really the estimates are that it's probably much greater than that. I think that maybe as many as 50% who are experiencing these symptoms aren't actually even seeking help. Dr. Rosenthal: They get bombarded on a daily basis by memories and flashbacks and it's a shocking statistic that 18 veterans every day commit suicide. Dr. Grosswald: We've lost more to suicide than actually have been lost in combat. That's the first time ever. Dr. Rosenthal: One thing that we who are interested in Transcendental Meditation are seeking is could TM be one of the answers or one of the ways in which we can treat PTSD? Dr. Grosswald: We put together a pilot study with returning veterans from the OEF-OIF war, which is the Iraq/Afghanistan war, and what we saw was for these ...

If you love to do yoga and are very good at it, yoga teacher training will help you to learn more asana (Yoga postures) of yoga to pass the knowledge. Yoga is a good and easy exercise and improves flexibility, which is good for

How to Control Your Mind in Putting

Posted: 13 Aug 2012 01:00 AM PDT

Article by Stephen Lau

Copyright (c) 2008 Stephen Lau

Putting is a game within the game of golf. Your golfing success depends on your putts, and your putts are affected by your mind.

A good putter knows how to control the mind by focusing on something small and simple.

In good putting, you clear all the clutters in your mind by narrowing your mental focus as much as possible. Learn to empty your mind of instructional thoughts from books, fellow golfers, or your coach. Just let your subconscious mind take over your strokes. It is like a runner on the track would let the subconscious mind take over the breathing to increase the oxygen intake; a runner does not have to consciously breathe harder in order to get more oxygen into the lungs to win the race.

So neither should you consciously focus on your strokes. Instead, just focus on the target.

For the same reason, if you worry less about scores or competitions, you would putt much better - you might even just roll the ball right into the hole in a perfect putt.

In good putting, you must realize that harboring on thoughts of the outcome of your putts will not help you roll the ball to the intended target. Learn to develop a mental discipline to shut off those conscious thoughts from your mind. In your mind's eye, you should see only a mental picture of the hole or your target.

Tiger Woods' father was said to have trained his son while he was still a very young kid to roll a ball to a hole, and then roll it to the hole again with his eyes closed. That was how Tiger Woods received his training in developing his mental golf.

A good putter not only focuses on the target, but also narrows down the target. Therefore, a good putter's target may not simply be the hole. Remember, the smaller the target is, the better control your brain and your body may have in getting the ball to the target of your choice. Learn to select a smaller target, such as a broken blade of grass, or a tiny edge of the hole. Your brain works better when the t! arget is smaller, and your brain subconsciously has better control of your body's functions, especially your muscles and reflexes.

You may have one of the best strokes of your life when you see the target, and your mind simply reacts to it with little interference from your conscious thought.

In any sport, gaining control of the situation is important. Some people believe that you must try the hardest in order to control the situation. However, in putting, trying your hardest may not be equivalent to doing your best.

Why is that so?

That is because putting requires spontaneity, and spontaneity is controlling the mind and hence the response, but without striving your hardest to control the resulting action. Essentially, spontaneity is focusing on the process, and never on the outcome. In this way, your efforts may become "natural" and "effortless." As a result, your strokes may become more confident, free from doubt or hesitation. In putting, confidence means overcoming any unconscious attempt using excessive muscular strength to steer the shot to the target in the swing. Confidence means using your conscious mind to remember only the good shots and discarding the bad ones. Confidence also means putting the outcome of a shot in perspective - golf is only a game and whatever the outcome may be, it is not the end of the world. Finally, confidence means staying in the present moment. The past has nothing to do with the present, and only the present is real to you. Make the most of what you can do at the present moment, and the future is beyond your control. When you control your mind, you control your confidence, and hence you control the game.

Are Stress and High Cholesterol Linked?

Posted: 13 Aug 2012 12:00 AM PDT

Article by R.D. Hawkins

It is safe to say that stress is all around us. It can be found at home, at work, or come in the form of unexpected events, both positive and negative. But what about stress and high cholesterol, could they somehow be linked? Well first off too much stress is bad and so is high cholesterol but eating too much cherry pie or running out of gas are also bad so this can't really be part of our discussion. But all that aside there seems to be a direct link between stress and high cholesterol that has been exposed by a few clever researchers whose work was published in Health Psychology.

The premise of the research study was to create excess stress amongst the study group by having them look at pictures and colors which were all mismatched. In other words the word blue would be written under a bright red picture.

I am feeling the stress just thinking about that, what about you? Could our blood cholesterol levels be skyrocketing right now? Let's find out.

After these individuals were subjected to this color/word stress test their blood lipid levels were measured and surprisingly every single person showed a rise in cholesterol levels. The most vulnerable seemed to be those who had the natural tendency to become agitated earlier rather than later. But what was even more amazing was that over half of the study participants that had the biggest initial reaction were still showing elevated cholesterol levels 3 years later. It also should be pointed out that there was no noticeable difference in results for men and women.

So when it comes to stress and cholesterol it would be easy to make the case that both how well one handles stressful events and/or the amount of daily stress they are exposed to can elevate blood cholesterol levels.

If you were to combine this idea with the fact that most people under stress tend to eat more high saturated fat comfort foods (snacks, desserts, dogs, burgers, etc...) now all of the sudden a very unhealthy picture seems to be evolving.

! Looking for answers

There are three tips that I use for dealing with stress and cholesterol. Let's look at them and see if you may be able to implement them into your daily routine.

*Stay active: When stress is dogging me like a bad dream I try to park a little further away and walk off that excess adrenaline and cortisol (stress hormones). If I can squeeze in a 30 minute walk in a nearby park that seems to work even better.

*Watch what you eat: Most of us get under stress and will eat things we wouldn't even think about eating during happier times. A good way to fight this is to clean out your refrigerator and pantry when you are feeling good about things so when the temptation to eat the whole gallon of ice cream or bag of chips hits you a trip to the store will be needed to satisfy the craving.

*Live in the moment: It is just normal to look back once in a while to remember the good times but you can't stay there, you must move on. Additionally, looking forward with pessimism is equally troublesome so do your best to stay in the moment.

*Breathe: When stress comes calling meet it head on with ten deep breaths, exhaling slowly with each one.

* Natural cholesterol reduction supplements: Prescriptions for high cholesterol do come with some side effects risks. For some people they are helpful but for me the trick to managing both stress and cholesterol has been found in leading a more natural overall lifestyle.

Freeing oneself from suffering

Posted: 13 Aug 2012 12:00 AM PDT

Ignorance or avidya has no beginning.  Along with this there is no awakening as we might reason.  If there is a beginning for us, the beginning is with suffering or duhkha.  If we examine to see what it is that suffers we believe that it is we who suffer or, in other words, I suffer.  But if we meditate on this, it is not really we or I who suffers.  We suffer because we cling to suffering or the same, we cling to a thing that suffers.  If we did not cling or adhere to the suffering thing or entity, we would not suffer.

Notice, there is a spiritual distinction to be made between my self and suffering.  Intrinsically, I do not suffer except that desire binds me to a thing of suffering, namely, this body consisting of material shape, feeling, perception, habitual tendencies and sensory consciousness (these are the five skandha or aggregates).  It is noteworthy to point out that the Buddha said:

Whatever there is material shape, feeling, perception, the habitual tendencies, consciousness—he beholds these things as impermanent, suffering, a disease, an imposthume, a dart, a misfortune, an affliction, as external (parato), as decay, empty, and not the self" (M. i. 435).

The question we need ask ourselves is why do we cling to what is impermanent, suffering, etc.?  If we fully knew ourselves, that is, fully knew that we are the very substance of all phenomena, why then cling to anything?  It would be unworthy (nâla) of us.  It is only when we are unable to behold our true self or nature taking, instead, what is unreal and empty to be our self or true nature, that we suffer.  This even includes taking what is sheer absence (abhava) to be our self or nature since absence is not what the self is.

Consciousness appears to be the coupling mechanism by which we come to interface with the things that suffer.  In this regard, the Buddha said,  "Where there is an object, consciousness has an abiding. When consciousness is so firmly established and developed, birth in a new sphere ensues" (S. ii. 65). From this it follows that consciousness has to be thoroughly weaned off of phenomena.  This is the only way the etiology of suffering can be abandoned (SA, 379, 103c19).  When the last stages of conditioned consciousness cease there is consciousness that is non-manifesting (anidassanam), infinite (anatam), and all luminous (sabbatopabham)" (D. ii. 223).  In the commentary (DA. ii. 393), this is said to be nirvana.

Fight stress and promote healing way of a relaxing facial massage

Posted: 12 Aug 2012 11:00 PM PDT

Article by Pete Webber

When most people think of massage, facial massage rarely comes to mind, but your face is like your body when it comes to working muscles. Similar to other massage techniques, facial massage therapy helps to promote relaxation and relieve tension. It also increases circulation to help restore energy to your face and your body. Have you ever noticed that your skin looks more pale and puffy in the morning than it did the night before? This is the result of less blood flow to the face and a facial massage is the perfect solution for getting your blood flowing again to restore its healthy glow.

Facial massage therapy - if done on a regular basis - helps to reduce the signs of aging by tightening and lifting the muscles in the face. It also reduces the fine lines and wrinkles that appear as we age, making the procedure that much more popular. The skin on your face can appear dull from a buildup of dead skin cells and dirt... a facial massage exfoliates the skin and returns it to its natural glow.

If a facial massage lasts too long, it can result in stretched muscles, so your therapist will limit it to about 20 minutes. People with sensitive skin cannot handle excess amounts of pressure, as it can result in irritation or damage to the skin. Most massage therapists apply massage oil or lotions to the face prior to the facial massage to lubricate it and reduce friction. This is done after an inspection of your skin to determine if it is oily or dry; some clients with oily skin may need little or no lubricant.Facial massage therapy is not only known for its circulatory and anti-aging benefits... it also moisturizes the skin, improves your skin's tone and texture, and lessens any redness or sensitivity you may be experiencing. Anyone who suffers from breakouts and blemishes can find relief with regular facial massage therapy as well.

Exfoliation, which is accomplished through scrubbing and cleansing the skin, is the first step in the facial massage process. This is followed by the applicat! ion of m assage oil or lotions as determined by your massage therapist. He/she will then continue the session by softly targeting various areas of your face (depending on your goals) with gentle massaging strokes.

So what benefits can you expect and what areas will your therapist target during facial massage therapy?

Reduction of the appearance of horizontal wrinkles and lines:

forehead and nose.Unclogging of pores and reduction of blemishes: nostrils.

Prevention of wrinkles and sagging muscles: mouth and cheeks.

Reduction the appearance of bags under your eyes: the area around the eyes.

Prevention of sagging skin and increased muscle tone:

chin and neck Massaging to stimulate other body parts:ears. So remember... whenever you feel a certain amount of stress from everyday life or your body starts to ache, and you feel like you could use a good massage, think about your face. Just like in your body, stress and fatigue can show up in your face; the best remedy is a facial massage to take the stress out of your face and make you feel like a brand new person.
